Week in Review
Picture of the week
This week
When Nasir became an umpire!
Bangladesh all-rounder Nasir Hossain made a comical move by exhibiting the ‘out’ signal in front of on-field umpire Nigel Llong which created quite a buzz on social
media. The incident happened in the 109th over. Off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz bowled to tail-ender Pat Cummins outside off and the batsman in question offered no
shot. The bowler appealed but umpire gave it not out. Captain Mushfiqur Rahim reviewed the decision and eventually it got overturned. But the funny part is, when Llong
was showing the overturned decision, Nasir, standing just beside the umpire, copied him and produced the out signal. The funny gesture from Nasir amused the local
crowd and a few moments later, it went viral
The 2017 US Open Championship
reaches its climax with the women’s
grand finale scheduled to be held at
Flushing Meadows on Saturday.
In what is an all-American final,
Sloane Stephens will face Madison
Keys after beating Venus Williams
and Coco Vandeweghe respectively
in the semi-finals.
In the men’s draw, the winner of
the last-four tie between Argentine
Juan Martin del Potro and Spaniard
Rafael Nadal will lock horns with
South Africa’s Kevin Anderson and
Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta.
As far as cricket action is concerned,
England and the West Indies,
currently battling it out in the
third and final Test match at Lord’s,
will contest the third, fourth and
final day’s play on Saturday, Sunday
and Monday respectively.
The series is level at 1-1 with
England winning the first Test at
Edgbaston before the Windies won
the second Test at Leeds.
Mbappe joins
PSG on loan
from Monaco
• AFP
France international striker Kylian
Mbappe joined Paris Saint-Germain
from Monaco on a season-long
loan Thursday, just hours before
the transfer deadline in a deal that
could make him the second most
expensive footballer in history.
According to media reports,
the overall transfer fee could rise
to 180 million euros ($215 million)
including add-ons, which would
make Mbappe, 18, the second
most expensive player ever behind
his new team-mate Neymar.
Mbappe burst onto the scene in
the second half of last season and
scored 15 goals in 29 appearances
in Monaco’s run to the French title.
He netted 26 times in 44 matches
in all competitions.
Brought up in the northern suburbs
of Paris, Mbappe was compared
Federer’s US Open quest ended by big-hearted Del Potro
• Reuters
Roger Federer’s hopes of claiming a
record-extending 20th grand slam
title ended on Wednesday when he
was beaten 7-5 3-6 7-6(8) 6-4 by Juan
Martin del Potro in a thrilling U.S. Open
quarter-final.
Del Potro, who swept aside Federer
in the 2009 final at Flushing Meadows,
now faces world number one Rafa
Nadal, denying fans a potential first
encounter between the Swiss maestro
and Spaniard in New York.
Federer had predicted that he
India completes tour
whitewash in Sri Lanka
• Reuters
A merciless India subjected Sri Lanka
to a tour whitewash after fifties from
skipper Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey
secured their seven-wicket victory in
the one-off Twenty20 International
on Wednesday.
Whitewashed in the three-Test series
and blanked 5-0 in the preceding
one-dayers, Sri Lanka posted 170-7, a
total they hoped would be enough to
end the string of losses.
serve, forehand and fighting spirit to
advance to the semi-finals.
Del Potro hit huge forehands,
big serves and stayed focused when
Federer seemed to be back in control in a
one-sided second set. Federer had tried
to stay away from Del Potro’s lethal forehand
throughout the match, but with
the Argentine’s first-serve percentage
at 79 in the first set, he had no chance
to break.
Federer was on the brink of defeat
when he trailed 0-30 on his serve at
5-3 and Del Potro clinched the match
with yet another forehand winner in
the next game.
There was no respite for them,
however, as Kohli blasted 82 and
Manish Pandey smashed 51 not out to
help India romp home with four balls
to spare.
Argentina held off by Venezuela
• Reuters
Argentina came from behind to draw
1-1 with Venezuela on Tuesday but
their inability to take what should
have been an easy three points means
the 2014 losing finalists are still a long
way from guaranteeing their place in
Russia next year.
Brazil top the 10-team group and
are the only South America side to
have so far qualified for Russia 2018.
Uruguay, who won 2-1 away at
Paraguay, are in second-place with 27
points, followed by Colombia on 26.
Peru, who have not played in the
World Cup Finals since 1982, beat
Ecuador 2-1 earlier in the evening to
move into fourth place with 24 points,
ahead of Argentina on goal difference.
The fifth-placed side go into an intercontinental
playoff against New Zealand.

Nathan Lyon
DT
Lyon, from groundsman to the GOAT
• Ali Shahriyar Bappa
from Chittagong
The matured and classy off-spinner
Nathan Lyon has showed his class
in the tour of Bangladesh, taking
a whopping 22 wickets in the twomatch
Test series, in just four innings.
That’s an incredible feat for a
bowler from Australia who often remains
under the shadow of the formidable
Aussie pace bowling attack.
Before the series, there was a
hype that the series will be decided
by the spinners.
And as expected, spin played
an all-important part in both the
games.
Many spinners were in the running
but Bangladesh were expectedly
more dangerous with the likes
of all-rounder Shakib al Hasan,
youngster Mehedi Hasan Miraz
and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam in
their rank.
Lyon, in contrast, was the
trumpcard for the Aussies as he
was the leader of the spin attack
with both left-arm spinner Ashton
Agar and rookie Mitchell Swepson
boasting not that much experience
between themselves.
And after the series, when one
looks at the stats, one will find out
that Lyon duly proved his worth
and led the bowling attack with a
flurry of wickets under his belt.
He broke a 130-year old record
for Australia when he went past
JJ Ferris’ mark from the two-Test
1887 Ashes series, where the latter
snared 18 scalps in his first two
matches of his international career.
The way Lyon bowled on the
first day of the Chittagong Test was
absolutely brilliant to watch.
It was a relatively flat track at Zahur
Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
There was nothing much for the
bowlers at that time as it was only
the first day of the Test.
But Lyon used all his experience
and his trickery to trap four
Tigers top-order batsmen (Soumya
Sarkar, Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes
and Mominul Haque) within a
short period of time.
Surprisingly, all of them were
left-handers.
It is not so much the venoumous
turns or uneven bounce which make
him successful, rather, it is his intelligence
and ability to use the condition
and pitch that made him so
successful in the Bangladesh series.
The “Lyon impact” caused
Bangladesh so much concern that
Bowling Career Summary
they reshuffled their batting order
in the second innings of the Chittagong
Test, sending their regular
top-order batsman Mominul
Haque down to No 8.
The offie took his time to make
his name in the international arena
after the post-Shane Warne and
Stuart MacGill era.
His biography in Cricket Asutralia’s
official website (cricket.
com.au) says, “After a long search
for a regular No 1 spinner in the
post-Shane Warne era, Australia
finally found what they were looking
for in 2011 when they opted for
a groundsman-cum-off-spinner
from country New South Wales, via
Canberra and Adelaide.
“Having shown his ability as a
net bowler while working as a curator’s
assistant at the Adelaide Oval,
Lyon made an immediate impact in
T20 cricket for South Australia.
“Then, with just a handful of
first-class matches to his name,
Lyon was rushed into Australia’s
Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka.
“The wiry tweaker showed no
signs of nerves on Test debut, dismissing
Kumar Sangakkara with
his very first ball and finishing with
5-34 to cap a dream start to his international
career.”
In a team like Australia where
pace bowlers are always given prominence,
Lyon was considered as
fourth bowler in the first few years.
But now, he shows his worth to
Australia on a regular basis using all
his experience and spin talent, in the
process becoming the No 1 weapon
for his country, particularly in Asia.
His stats in Asia will certainly
prove such claims.
No visiting bowler has a seven+wicket
haul than Lyon’s three.
He became only the third
off-spinner from Australia and the
first in over 110 years to take two
10-wicket hauls.
The 22 wickets he has taken in
this series against Bangladesh is
the joint second-highest in any
two-match series, next only to
Rangana Herath’s 23-wicket haul
against Pakistan in 2014.
Lyon’s first three Asian tours - to
Sri Lanka, India and UAE between
2011 and 2014 - were poor.
behind Shane Warne.
Following the Chittagong Test,
when queried as to how he solved
the puzzle in Asia, Lyon said, “I
think it’s a lot to do with confidence.
This is probably my sixth
tour in the sub-continent area so I
think leading an attack where I’ve
played the most games, lead the
bangladesh tour summary
wicket column with the bowling
group, I’ve put enough pressure on
myself to go out there and perform
well. I’ve done a lot of work with
Sri (former India spinner and
currently Australia’s spin
consultant Sridharan Sriram)
here, but also John Davison at
home.
“I’ve watched a lot of footage
of [Ravichandran] Ashwin, who
in my book is probably the No 1
spinner in the world. So in these
conditions it’s all about adapting
and learning and probably putting
your ego aside, and what works for
me in Australia probably doesn’t
really work here in the sub-continent.
(With that said) it’s also my
strength as well, so I can’t go too
far from that, I have to put my ego
away and really bowl with confidence,
in my terms ‘bowl ugly.’
“That might be round arm for
me, trying to undercut the ball a little
bit more but using my stock ball
as a variation. I think I’ve learnt a
lot in the sub-continent and I’m
embracing the challenge, and
that’s one of the best things, you’ve
got to want it, you want to go out
there and do well for your mates
walking out there, but the whole
Australian public at home, so it’s a
good challenge, and I love it.”
Australia were under tremendous
pressure after succumbing to
defeat against Bangladesh in Mirpur.
So after the second Test win
which saw the series levelled, a
happy and “relieved” captain
Steven Smith praised his main
strike bowler with an open
heart.
“Magnificent performance
by Lyon. Probably more the
first innings than the second
innings in Chittagong Test.
The first innings, the wicket
really wasn’t offering a great
deal. I thought the way he
just hit that right area, particularly
with the new ball,
skidding it on and hitting a few
guys in front. That was the perfect
way to bowl,” Smith told the media.
“I’m really proud of him. I think
he’s come a long way particularly
on the sub-continent over the
last couple of years. He’s developed
a different style at times.
He knows when to bowl differently
and when to bowl
his stock ball. I thought the
way he bowled throughout
this series, to take
22 wickets in a
two-match series
is remarkable,” he added.
So a remarkable series of
fascinating Test cricket has
ended 1-1 draw between mighty
Australia and rising Bangladesh.
The series will be remembered
in many ways,
thanks to some individual
brilliance from world-class
players.
But the way Lyon
showed his off-spin magic
and used the condition
as a spinner was like art
and that can be remembered
fondly as
well.
And so, “Well
Played Garry, the
GOAT.”
Bangladesh won by 20 runs
MoM: Shakib al Hasan
From body language to fearless
• Minhaz Uddin Khan
Bangladesh’s first Test match series
against Australia in 11 years could
have ended better.
After pulling off a brilliant show
in Dhaka to start the series with a
win, the Tigers were expected to
make things more interesting.
All the pressure was piled up
on the visitor when they moved to
Chittagong for the second and the
final Test of the series.
But expectations remained unfulfilled.
The Tigers were found wanting
for most parts of the Chittagong
Test with both bat and ball.
Australia are popular for their
never-say-die attitude and they
showed the superiority over
Bangladesh in the longest format
winning the game within four
days – and that too convincingly
– by seven wickets to level the
series.
But minus the occurrences in
Chittagong, one will surely see the
brighter side of Bangladesh.
The series saw the Tigers pick
up their maiden Test win against
the giant Aussies.
And along the sidelines of the
team’s achievements, individual
feats shone brightly and at the
same time, the world saw unfamiliar
characteristics from the Bangladesh
cricketers, in terms of body
language and their recent newfound
ability – to get under the opponent’s
skin.
The Tigers went into the series
vocal, with the ambition of winning
it 2-0 if possible and they were
right on the spot in the first game.
The home side dominated
throughout the first Test in Mirpur’s
Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
There were occasions when
Bangladesh were pushed to the
wall but wonderful were the moments
when they bounced back to
eventually seal a 20-run victory in
almost three and half days.
The win had rocked the world.
At a time when the global authority
of cricket is gradually losing
its interest towards the longest
form and mulling introducing twotier
cricket, the Bangladesh win
showed a ray of hope to the believers
of Test cricket.
The world was upbeat regarding
the Bangladesh win as it came
within 24 hours of the eight-ranked
West Indies winning against the
third-ranked England, no doubt a
fillip for Test cricket.
For Bangladesh, the series had
started before even the coin was
tossed for the first Test.
The exclusion of batsman Mominul
Haque from his best format
had shaken both the media and the
cricket fanatics of the country.
The national selection panel
was showered with criticism,
forcing the BCB president Nazmul
Hasan to make a stand.
Mominul, who still holds the
best Test average for Bangladesh
with 46 runs per game, was back
in the team replacing youngster
Mosaddek Hossain, who was suffering
from an eye infection.
The left-handed batsman however,
was given a cold welcome.
A core member of the team was
sarcastic and had congratulated Mominul
for “buying the media to find
his way back in the dressing room”.
The incident had offended the
majority in the Bangladesh tent
but circumstances had made them
overlook the incident and go into
the first Test, with chins high, as
Mominul got benched.
With two of the senior men
in the team, Shakib al Hasan and
Tamim Iqbal, playing their 50th
Test, the other playing members
of the side also had the ambition of
making the game special.
But as it happened, it was
rather the Shakib-Tamim duo
that rose to the occasion and
provided the lion’s share of the
Tamim with the bat was pivotal
in both the Bangladesh innings. In
the first, the left-handed batsman
scored 71 and put up a 155-run
stand with Shakib to take Bangladesh
from 10/3 to 165/4 as Bangladesh
had only two other batsmen
score more than 20.
In the second innings, the home
side were in almost a similar situation
when Tamim took charge
again, only to miss out on a deserving
century, having made 78.
Tamim was silent in his home-

ness, vocal Tigers come of age
town of Chittagong.
The southpaw got to score
only nine and 12 in two innings
but despite that, he ended as the
top-scorer for Bangladesh in the
series with 170.
It was Shakib though who had
earned the tag of the bigger hero in
the first Test.
The No 1 Test all-rounder had
scored an innings-saving 84 in the
first innings and another five in the
second.
But it was with the ball that the
left-arm spinner had made the
most damage as he went on to pick
five wickets in each innings to cut
Australia’s innings short.
Shakib got his second 10-for in
Tests.
Shakib concluded the series
with the most wickets for Bangladesh,
12, including the two in the
second Test.
In Chittagong, Bangladesh had
to deal with top-order collapses
yet again as captain Mushfiqur
Rahim and middle-order batsman
Sabbir Rahman scored 68 and 66
respectively to guide their side to
305.
And that was it as far as performance
with the bat is concerned.
With the ball, even the best
of Bangladesh had struggled as
Australia dominated to bag a seven-wicket
victory.
But what should be pleasing to
the Bangladesh dressing room is
left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman
getting back into taking wickets.
Mustafizur’s five wickets in the
game had come at a point when his
existence in the team had started
raising eyebrows.
The sensational Bangladesh
bowler has not been charming for
over a year now and it was necessary
for him to take wickets to
please the Bangladesh cricket fraternity.
Apart from the performances,
what has caught the eye of the general
public is Bangladesh’s body
language in the field.
Occasions have been ample in
the past when the Tigers have been
on the receiving end.
But this time around, the players
were vocal and the words were
not coming out from arrogance but
the fact that they are now a performing
team.
Australia are best in this trade,
even the best of the teams fail in
their exchange with the Aussies.
But Bangladesh have now
adopted it too.
Being fearless and throwing
back words looking into the eye,
the time has surely changed for the
Tigers.
A round of applause should be
reserved for the BCB and the security
agencies for giving confidence
to a nation concerned with security
of touring Bangladesh.
There was a slight hiccup when
it was alleged that a small pebble
hit the Australia team bus in Chittagong,
but by that time, the security
in place had already built up
enough trust among the tourist,
who ended the tour on a happy
note.
Liverpool out to make title statement at Man City
• Reuters
Liverpool could hardly be in higher
spirits as they set out on the short trip
to Manchester City on Saturday hoping
to make a strong case for their Premier
League title prospects.
A 4-0 thrashing of a compliant
Arsenal side before the international
break means Juergen Klopp’s side
have seven points from nine during
an opening period in which they also
safely negotiated a Champions League
playoff against Hoffenheim.
Liverpool have a strong recent
record against City, winning four of the
last six league clashes between the
sides and last lost to them in the league
three years ago.
City, who also have seven points,
have match-winners everywhere
though, even if they will be without
former Liverpool forward Raheem
Sterling who was sent off for over-celebrating
a last-gasp winner.
While Sterling’s absence will be
a blow, Guardiola’s options are so
numerous that Sergio Aguero was only
a substitute against Bournemouth and
he is likely to return.
Defensive worries remain despite
a huge summer outlay and 50-million-pound
right back Kyle Walker
will return from suspension with the
unenviable task of trying to stop the
rampaging runs of Mane, a battle that
could determine which of the two title
rivals will be celebrating.
Leaders Manchester United, who
have a 100 percent record and are yet
to concede a goal while scoring 10,
travel to Stoke City for Saturday’s late
kickoff.
Promoted high-flyers Huddersfield
sheets and are level on points with
Valverde banks on debutant Dembele to
make instant impact against Espanyol
• Reuters
Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde
will be banking on new signing
Ousmane Dembele to fill the gap left
by Neymar’s departure as he looks to
overcome off-pitch difficulties when
the Catalans take on Espanyol on
Saturday.
Barcelona have enjoyed a winning
start in La Liga and despite all the
off-field drama, Valverde is determined
that they make it three wins out of
three when they face his former club.
Barca have won their last eight La
Liga derbies at the Nou Camp dating
back to 2009, including 4-0, 5-1 and
5-0 victories in their last three meetings,
although there is some hope in
Espanyol of ending that dismal run.
Barcelona had a frustrating transfer
window, failing to sign top target
Philippe Coutinho after losing Neymar
to Paris St Germain for a world record
fee of 222 million euros ($266 million),
and there have also been calls to hold
a vote of no confidence against president
Josep Maria Bartomeu.
There is also unease at Barca over
the future of talisman Lionel Messi and
captain Andres Iniesta, who are both
out of contract next summer and have
yet to sign new deals.
Barca are one of only three teams
in La Liga to win both their opening
games, beating Real Betis and Alaves
2-0 without hitting top gear but are set
to be boosted by the debut appearance
of striker Dembele on Saturday.
SPAL hit the big time with
Inter match
• Reuters
Unusual in many ways, unglamorously-named
SPAL will know that they
have definitely hit the big time when
they visit Inter Milan on Sunday for
their biggest game yet since returning
to Serie A after a 49-year absence.
The only team ever to have competed
in Serie A using an acronym as
their name, Sunday’s visit to one of
Europe’s most imposing stadiums will
cap a remarkable rise for SPAL who
only five seasons ago were playing in
the fourth tier.
The club, full name Societa Polisportiva
Ars et Labor, was founded by
Salesian priests in 1907 and is one of
the oldest in the country.
After being wound up and relaunched
twice, mostly recently in 2013,
to wipe out debts, SPAL won promotion
from Serie B with an all-Italian squad,
another rarity nowadays in the country.
Although little-known among the
younger generations of Italian fans,
SPAL were a regular fixture in Serie A
during the 1950s and 1960s but fell
on hard times after being relegated
in 1968.
The crisis years saw SPAL languishing
in the lower divisions until
the turning-point in 2013 when the
club was re-founded and merged with
neighbours Giacomense.
Under new leadership, they
quickly moved up to the third tier and
things got even better after Leonardo
Semplici took over as coach in December
2014, guiding them to successive
promotions in 2016 and 2017 to take
them back to the top flight.
Whether they can establish themselves
is a different matter. But their
start has been above.
Floyd Mayweather did exactly
he outclassed mixed martial arts
a final victory in an illustrious
“This was my last fight tonight.
“But this is the last one, you
McGregor, however, is a different
his desire for more.
Asked what he liked most
about his boxing experience, Money
Mayweather prompted UFC
The problem is that there are
in either boxing or MMA who can
McGregor is most likely to return
Diaz.
Diaz gave McGregor his first
Liton Das should be in the
Test Team
Liton Das was included in the 14
man squad for the two tests against
Australia but unfortunately, even
with a first class average of 49 and
consistent performances, he failed to
break into the team. After the loss at
Chittagong, it became all the more apparent
as to why his inclusion would
have made more sense.
Firstly, in a top order consisting of
4 left-handers, Nathan Lyon became
all the more dangerous, with his disciplined
line and length. It prompted
the team to move the right handed
Nasir Hossain to number 4 in Bangladesh’s
second innings. It didn’t work
out well for him unfortunately. If Liton
was in the team, chances are, he’d be
keeping and therefore be able to let
Mushfiqur Rahim up the order to bat
at number three per say.
Secondly, Liton is a better keeper
than Mushfiqur while also being a solid
batsman that is technically correct.
He has the makings of being a success
in Tests even if he is to bat at number
5 or 6. The problem though seems to
be with Mushfiqur’s reluctance to give
up the gloves. Even though he took a
stunner to get rid of Matt Renshaw in
the 1st innings, he missed a stumping
chance of David Warner later in
Australian 1st innings.
Wicket keeping is easily the most
physically taxing job in cricket, and
especially in Tests and Mushfiqur’s
batting can only be benefited if he gives
up the gloves. Being arguably the best
batsman in the team, that’s where his
main focus should also be. There have
already been calls from fans to drop
Imrul Kayes or Soumya Sarkar or both
but in all honesty, not playing Liton has
been a bigger miss than anything else,
especially with the tour to South Africa
coming up next. He has his highest Test
score against the Proteas too.
Liton could have easily been
accommodated for if Soumya was
dropped and Imrul played as an
opener, where his partnership average
with Tamim is a healthy 48 with over
2000 runs scored. Then again, a case
could also be made for Soumya as he
still scored more runs than Imrul in the
last 10 innings in Tests and is a much
better fielder than Imrul.
Whatever the case, it’s clear that
this was a missed opportunity to
get the batting order right and win
a series against the mighty Aussies,
because of constant tinkering with
the batting order, playing players out
of position, defensive captaincy, lax
fielding and imperfect team selection.
Let’s hope Liton finally gets the
chance he so richly deserves in the
tour to South Africa.
