IMPORTANCE, AIMS AND POSSIBLE OUTCOME OF RESEARCH
Tissue ischemia developing upon vascular occlusion and subsequent reperfusion
often leads to severe organ damage and inflammation, but there is no effective
prevention and treatment available to date. Our goal is to precisely characterize
the above processes in order to develop new therapeutic strategies. Biologically
active gases modulate crucial steps in such disorders, with nitric oxide and its
metabolites playing a principal role. Generation and beneficial effects of methane
were repeatedly proven in various animal models of ischemia-reperfusion
and inflammation in our laboratory, thus demonstrating biological activity of
the molecule. However, the mechanism of action of methane still needs to be
clarified. Our research focuses on the interplay of methane and nitric oxide in various
models of oxidative stress. Methane might exert its effects by modulating
generation of peroxynitrite, which is an extremely reactive oxygen and nitrogen
containing molecule or alternatively, methane may influence protein nitration
by peroxynitrite. We use photoacoustic spectroscopy to assess generation of gaseous
compounds and among others fluorescence and chemiluminescence to
measure generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.
AIMS DURING HER CAREER
After graduation I would like to work in a hospital as a doctor. In addition, I plan
to take part in the development of medicine with research work. I think it is important
to spread the modern tools and methods of medicine.
