IMPORTANCE, AIMS AND POSSIBLE OUTCOME OF RESEARCH
In developed countries, the leading causes of death are cardiovascular diseases.
Several conditions with metabolic alterations (e.g. hypercholesterolemia,
diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, etc.) increase the risk for cardiovascular
diseases. Our research interest includes investigation of acute myocardial infarction,
and the molecular mechanisms of cardiac complications of metabolic
risk factors. Furthermore, we investigate adaptation to ischemia in the heart (i.e.
ischemic preconditioning and postconditioning) in the presence or absence of
metabolic risk factors. The abovementioned diseases are set up in ex vivo and in
vivo models in our lab. The techniques we use include for instance echocardiography,
Langendorff heart perfusion, measurement of the size of tissue necrosis,
qPCR, and Western blot. We hope to understand better the mechanism of heart
diseases developing as a consequence of metabolic risk factors, and to discover
possible therapeutic treatment options.
AIMS DURING HER CAREER
Beyond my university studies, this program gives me an opportunity to get closer
to different aspects of science as a student. I hope that later in my career this
knowledge can also be used in the clinics and in my further research. My aim is to
translate the newly discovered research results into the clinical practice, thereby
improving medical therapy.
