IMPORTANCE, AIMS AND POSSIBLE OUTCOME OF RESEARCH<br />
Cardiovascular diseases, especially acute myocardial infarction, are the leading<br />
causes of death in industrialized countries. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) increases<br />
the risk of acute myocardial infarction. Our research group investigates the<br />
morphological and functional consequences of CKD in the heart. Besides, we<br />
look at the cellular and molecular alterations in the heart in CKD (e.g. changes in<br />
gene and miRNA expression, or signaling). We also study how CKD affects acute<br />
myocardial infarction. Moreover, we examine the effect of CKD on the endogenous<br />
adaptive mechanisms of the heart leading to cardioprotection. We hope that<br />
we will be able to identify and modulate molecular mechanisms that are role<br />
players in the harmful cardiac effects of CKD.<br />
AIMS DURING HER CAREER<br />
My main aim is to investigate the molecular background of metabolic diseases. I<br />
would like to study the adaptive cardioprotective mechanisms of the heart such<br />
as ischaemic or chemical preconditioning. Moreover, I am interested in the connection<br />
between metabolic diseases and ischaemic preconditioning because<br />
several metabolic diseases have been shown to attenuate the cardioprotective<br />
effect of ischaemic preconditioning, however, in CKD ischaemic preconditioning<br />
remains cardioprotective.<br />
