world? It’s the physical places they are and the places they go, but
it’s more than that too! It’s the people we love and who love us
back that make our place in the world special and one-of-a-kind.
This is Squirt. He’s going to help us find you!

humans need a very special
kind of environment to live.
Your environment is what’s
around you. Wherever you are
right now, stop and look around.
What is unique to the environment you’re in?

Humans also need air to breathe. Take a
big breath in through your nose and out
with your mouth. Whoosh! That’s a special
kind of air made just for your lungs!
Did you know something else interesting
about breathing?
Taking a deep breath can calm
your whole body especially when
you don’t feel good. What’s
something you do to calm down
when you’re upset?

Planet Earth is like a ball - you can spin it around
and see all the different places where people live. There
are seven different continents on this planet where you
could be.
South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia,
Antarctica.
Some are very hot and some are very cold and some
are both! Each place has different people and different
customs that make that place special. You call North
America home. Your summers are usually pretty hot but
your winters are cold.
The different continents are all unique
- just like you!
Collier, two of the things that make you unique are how
smart and funny you are. What are more things you like
about yourself?

Did you know there are 195 countries in the world?
That’s a lot of places where you could live! Some countries
are very big and some countries are tiny. You
live in the United States of America!
America is a HUGE country - it would take you six
months to walk from one side of it to the other! Can
you imagine walking for six months straight? WHEW!
You like living in America because that is the place
you were born and your family lives with you. You like
to play soccer and watch the fireworks at the lake on
the 4th of July every year!

America is such a big country
that it has many different
kinds of land: mountains
and oceans and rivers
and forests and lakes
and even frozen, snowy
tundras!
That means that it could be sunny
and warm where you live, but somewhere
else it could be snowing at the
EXACT SAME TIME!

Thankfully, you live in the Southeast.
It’s a good thing you live there, because you
love to spend time swimming at the lake and
there are some places in this country where
you couldn’t do that!

There are FIFTY states in your country!
Almost
all the states are nextdoor
neighbors to each other,
except two: one that floats in the
middle of the ocean, and one that’s

Some are famous for their yummy food, others for their
beautiful parks, and some for their crazy animals!
(Have you ever seen a bison?) You come from the state that is
known for being the Volunteer State! You live in Tennessee!
On the next page you’ll see a painting of all the states in the
United States. Look at the picture and see what’s painted next
to the name. These are some (just some, not all!) of the things
this state is famous for.

Different people live in different places.
Some people live in really big places and some people live in
really little places. Some people live on farms, some people
live in cities, some people live in small towns.

Some people have small families and others have lots of people
in their families. There are many things that are different and
many more that are similar between people.
Sometimes it’s the differences that make us special and
sometimes it’s the similarities.
Can you think of someone you know who is different from you?
Now, can you think of anything that you and that person
have in common?

Every day, you get up and go to school at Lockeland
Design Center. Your teacher for 1st grade is Ms. Cammarota.
You like to do math and stations in class with your
friends Ian, George, and Lincoln.

I’M HUNGRY
You are extra good at math and science - you are always
building elaborate structures! Even though handwriting
is sometimes hard for you, you don’t give up! That shows
perseverance. (That’s just an extra long word that means
you don’t give up.)
What is something else you don’t give up on?

A neighborhood is a community where many people live close
to each other. You love to ride your bike around your neighborhood
with your family. Shelby Park, the Adventure Science
Center, and the indoor playground are nearby and some of your
favorite places.

Neighborhoods are made up of different kinds of places
to live. Some people live in houses, some people live in
apartments, some people even live in houses made of ice
called igloos! Every neighborhood has its special places and
special people... AND this one’s extra special because it’s
where you live, Collier!

Home is where you live with your Mom, Dad, Caleb, Joseph,
and Abigail, on Skyview Drive. Sometimes when you come
home, the first thing you think about is getting to play in
your bed and eating a snack.

MR. POSTMAN?
At home, you love playing with legos and jumping on the
trampoline. You help out at home by helping take care of
Abigail. And you’re good at it, too!
What are some other things you’re good at?

One of your favorite things to do is to set up the camping
tent with your family in the basement. You also love to build
new parts of the treehouse in the backyard with Dad.
