Welcome back to the new school year, and a

Primary Times for the first time. We hope you all had
a wonderful summer break and were able to recharge
your batteries ready for the adventures that await us in
the coming months.

and exciting things to do with your children – see our

information.
In this issue we have focussed on schools – this is a very
important year for year 6 pupils and we wish them all
well. We hope you find this helpful when planning the
next step for your children.
Our competitions are on pages 21 and 22, including
details of our annual Primary Times creative competition
to design our Christmas card, family passes to York Maze
and Beningborough Hall, and the chance to win a £250

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning will be
returning to classrooms and assembly
halls across the country - for its
27th year - on Friday 29 September 2017.
Having raised a total of £29.5 million in
2016, this year’s event aims to raise even
more vital money for people living with
cancer. This is the year that the total
raised by Coffee Morning since it began
will pass the £200 million mark, so we
really do need everyone in the education
trade’s help.

Following a £16 million rebuilding programme,
Hull New Theatre will officially reopen
on Saturday 16 September with a special
performance presented by The Royal Ballet

City of Culture 2017

Hull New Theatre to reopen with The Royal
Ballet and a celebration of dance across the city
producing some of the UK’s finest dancers. Take
Flight will be a unique collaboration between
The Royal Ballet, local young dancers and dance
teachers. Details about performance times will
be announced shortly.
More than 300 free tickets are being set aside to
enable young people in Hull, who are studying
dance or have a special interest in it, to attend
the performance at Hull New Theatre. A further
group of young people from across Hull will
also be invited to enjoy the live screening in
Queens Gardens for free as part of the ongoing
commitment to ensure youngsters in every part
of the city have the opportunity to participate in
this City of Culture year.

Fundraising Day

Wetnose Animal Aid is a small, dedicated,
not-for-profit organisation that raises money
to support animal rescue centres in the UK.
We donate money specifically for animal
rescues that don’t get the support they
valuably need, to help cover payments for
essential requirements such as feed and
vet bills.
Every year we hold our national fundraising
event, called “Wetnose Day” – one theme for
this year is to invite schools to hold an animal
fundraising day, so why not think of activities
you could hold at your school, such as: face
painting, drawing different animals that are
cared for in Rescue Centres, fancy dress,
holding a cake sale, writing a story or reading
animal poems, better still, do something
completely bonkers!

Join Saint Catherine’s for Starlight Walk’s 10 year Anniversary
September will mark 10 years since the start of Saint Catherine’s annual Starlight Walk. This year the walk will take
place on Saturday 16th September at 9pm. It will begin at the Hospice on Throxenby Lane and follow a 6.5 mile
route around Scarborough’s North and South bay with a stop on the way at the famous Harbour Bar, who have
supported this event from the beginning.
This year supporters will be given a lantern with their registration packs. People may wish to decorate these in
dedication to a loved one. These lanterns will then be placed within the Hospice grounds before the walk begins.
The supporters will then be able to light up the night when they are given another handled lantern that they can
carry along the route to light the way. The team at Saint Catherine’s are looking forward to seeing their supporters
getting creative with light up costumes to really brighten up the night sky.

A Day at the Seaside
An exhibition that celebrates Britain’s rich
seaside heritage by displaying a collection
of posters, objects and a film made especially
by Yorkshire Film Archive showing the
significance of Scarborough’s status as the UK’s
first seaside holiday destination. Scarborough
Museums Trust will be welcoming visitors
through its doors as the exhibition tells the
story of the town’s seaside holiday heritage,
with objects selected from the Scarborough
Collections, including a 1930s Deplacido ice
cream tricycle, and a rare surviving ‘penny
lick’, the forerunner of the waffle cone! Visitors
will have the chance to dress up in the holiday
fashions of yesteryear, take family snaps with a
specially created peep through board and create
their own postcards as a souvenir of their visit.

Cliff Lift - Central
Tramway
Visitors are afforded access to the machine room
of the Central Tramway Company, established in
1881. The Central Tramway operates a Victorian
funicular railway (cliff lift) in Scarborough. The
machine room is not normally open to visitors.
The equipment is essentially the original
equipment, updated to adhere to modern

30th annual York Festival
of Traditional Dance
For two days in September York will come
alive once again to the sound of jingling bells,

Pocklington School

The year’s recipient of the Scarborough Scholar full scholarship
award has made a most positive impression since her arrival at the
College from Lady Lumley’s into Year 9 in January. Rachel was
chosen from a very large number of high-calibre applicants and
stood out as a pupil with obviously impressive levels of achievement
to-date, talent in many areas, self-motivation and ambition. She has
already proven herself a most accomplished creative writer, public
speaker and dancer.
A number of other accomplished applicants from primary
schools across the area will also be joining the College this
September, thanks to the scholarships and bursaries they have
been awarded via the process. The search is now on for the

Krash Labs
Krash Labs just celebrated
its five year anniversary
and continues to go from
strength to strength.
Based at the YMCA in
Scarborough, Krash Labs
is a unique, permanent outof-school
computer club.
Suitable for all children
aged 6-16 it allows children to socialise around computer gaming as
well as learning things such as computer programming, robotics and
3D printing.
Sessions are available after school, Saturdays and a holiday club
during School Holidays. They are also Ofsted registered and accept
childcare vouchers from the major providers.
Krash Labs are extremely inclusive and welcome children of all
abilities and are particularly popular with children with SEND who
often struggle to find suitable activities and childcare. They also work
closely with local schools, charities and community organisations
such as Ryedale Special Families, Whitby WHISH and Yorkshire
Coast Families.
Wherever possible Krash Labs gets involved in the community and
in the past have worked with groups such Barrowcliff Big Local
Project and Sci-Fi Scarborough. Perhaps the highlight of the 5 years
was their project for Coastival 2017. This 9 month long project
painstakingly attempted to recreate Scarborough ion 1:1 Scale in
Minecraft, culminating in a 2 day extravaganza in the Grand Hall at
Scarborough Spa. The project involved working with hundreds of
children across the area in special workshops with local schools and
community groups.

Exciting year ahead for PQA!
Students from The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts in
York, Scarborough, Beverley and Hull have a very exciting academic
year coming up starting in September.
PQA York’s morning academy are embarking on film projects for an
upcoming Red Carpet Cinema Screening at the Vue Cinema in York,
in which the students will learn all aspects of film-making from both
sides of the camera.
PQA York’s afternoon academy will be performing at The Shaftesbury
Theatre in London’s West End in May 2018, with PQA Beverley’s
students taking to the stage at Her Majesty’s Theatre, also in the
heart of London’s West End in July of next year.
The students from PQA Scarborough will be heading to London
to perform in ‘The Lazy Ace’ in October, before beginning work on
some more yet-to-be-announced performing arts projects.
At PQA Hull, students are beginning a rehearsal process to perform
at Scunthorpe Baths Hall with X Factor winners G4, with PQA
Beverley performing with the hit pop opera group in December at
Beverley Minster.
Young people from the region can get involved with these exciting

Get Involved at the SJT!
Our youth theatre classes, known as
‘Rounders’, are weekly sessions led by
theatre professionals. Our Rounders
get the chance to explore all areas of
theatre, develop their skills in a fun and
friendly environment, and there are

also run SJT Young Voices, a choir for
young people aged 12 -18 who sing lots
