Photos supplied More recreation, tourism suggested for dams Toowoomba’s three water supply dams, Cooby, Perservance and Cressbrook, have a second purpose, for recreation, sport and tourism, and these uses for the dams are now under review. Consultation meetings were held in Toowoomba and Highfields last week, to seek public opinion about how best the dams might be used, providing fishing, boating, camping and other groups an opportunity to have their say. The review is being conducted by consultants, Otium Planning Group, and director Martin Lambert and senior consultant Julie Nicholls ran last week’s meetings. They have also conducted a survey among interested groups, and said they were pleased that 520 survey forms were completed and returned. The public consultation was seeking opinions on the activities currently undertaken at the dams, and what uses that might be permitted in the future. The project is known as the Three Lakes Review and the consultants are expected to report to the council with recommendations in November or December, and Council is expected to respond early next year. At the Highfields meeting, Cr Joe Ramia said the first purpose of the three lakes was to provide drinking water for more than 100,000 in the Toowoomba Region, and how other activities affected water treatment needed to be kept in mind. Consultant Martin Lambert said Federal legislation protected the dam infrastructure, such as the dam wall, and these walls were restricted areas. He said erosion of the banks, and pollution had an impact on water quality, and bush fires were also a risk. However, many recreational activities were compatible and some wanted to see the opening up of Lake Perservance to fishing and fish stocking. Some wanted better access for water skiing, and the use of small petrol outboard engines, with speed limits, on the dams including Cooby. The three lakes were described as potential great tourist attractions, and there was a suggestion for a green hiking trail from Crows Nest, through the Valley of Diamonds, to Perservance Dam, then to Cressbrook Dam and along the escarpment to Toowoomba.
