Sharon Barker - Principal,
Highfields State Secondary
College: “We need opportunity
for young people to have a place
to go, connect with family and
friends and technology.
“There should be opportunities
for part time work and vocational
educational training,
and a place where young people
can enjoy various activities with
family and friends.
“Students at Highfields State
Secondary College have become
involved in the discussion about
a community common.
A process has been established
for the young people at
the College to comment on the
community common idea, and
some are participating in developing
information for a business
case.
The Highfields Community Heart Project has identified economic development, jobs and growth, as essential in the transformation
of Highfields as a sustainable centre. Today, four residents tell why they want the development of a Highfields community common.
College will have 1000 students
in 2019, and there will be
a growing demand for work experience
and VET training, and
this provides an opportunity for
both students and the community.”
Stanhope Jonsson - Highfields
residen: “I’ve been resident
of Highfields for 18 years
and have noticed the dramatic
changes and not all for the better,
with the development of
small housing blocks. Highfields
was appreciated for open space,
green areas and lifestyle.
“We need to identify a centre
that reflects the ideal lifestyle.
Council won’t do it. And I commend
the Highfields and District
Business Connections for their
leadership in this.
“I’m disturbed at the lack of
facilities for the numbers of students
who will be leaving school
in a couple of years.
“Highfields has been regarded
as a dormitory suburb, but
we now need facilities here to
encourage young people to stay
here in their community.”
Cam Mackenzie - Principal,
Amaroo Environmental Education
Centre, Kleinton: “We
need to be selling and singing
sustainability for all ages and my
simple definition of sustainability
is ‘enough for all forever’.
“And for Highfields this includes
the people, business, and
the place.
“Highfields needs a community
common for its sense of place.
“There’s a need to preserve the
Charles and Motee Rogers Park
(and the trees along Clarke Road).
York - a green park that’s sustainable
is the essence of the
health and sense of sustainability
for the community.”
Greg Gall, Highfields _ resident
and former RACQ regional
manager: “Highfields is
growing too quickly to remain a
dormitory suburb of Toowoomba.
"It’s great to see these people
involved in Highfields taking
time to develop a significant
“driver” for Highfields future.
“The community will need
greater opportunities as Highfields
grows.
"It’s really good to see they
are working to cater for young
people, with an aim to keep them
enthusiastic, and to use their
knowledge here in Highfields.”
