Please check your backyard pool fence, gate and latch. Inadequate pool fencing and pool gates that are faulty remain a major contributing factor in the rate of drowning in backyard swimming pools among children under 5. Royal Life Saving have developed a home pool safety checklist which allows you to conduct Payments to Council Making payments to council has been made easy with our online options and 24/7 phone payments. You can pay rates, water notices and animal registrations by credit card on 1300 451 206 or online www.tr.qld.gov.au Please note that a credit card surcharge applies Three Lakes Survey Whether you splash, paddle, walk or fish, we know how much people love visiting our dams and we’re working on a review to optimise our recreational opportunities. Often pool owners don’t realise that their pool fence or gate is faulty which poses a threat to children’s safety. Pool fences, pool gates and latches should be regularly checked and maintained as parts can break or become defective over time. Please visit www.royallifesaving.com.au and download Highfields Lions Show and Shine The Highfields Lions Show and Shine will be a great day out for all on Sunday, September 17, at the Cabarlah Showgrounds. There will be a live band playing, an event from FAD Fitness and Dance and Batmobile! For the kids, there will be a free jumping castle and face painting and plenty to do. The best presented car or bike club will be awarded $500 cash and a trophy. There are also many trophies across many vehicle types including cars, bikes 4WDs and trucks and we have top ten V8s, six cyclinder and four cylinder trophies and more. We are hoping for more than 200 cars this year. Many families are expected to attend this year which should hopefully be a beautiful and sunny September day. I would like to thank all of our sponsors for their good and kind support as without them there would be no show. I would like to give a special thanks to Toowoomba Regional Council who has given us their event grant support for another year which gives us the ability to bring such a fun community event to Highfields. If anyone has any questions please contact me on 0438 086 777 or visit the Highfields Lions Show and Shine Facebook page. - Liam Boundy. To mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Qld Ltd, in conjunction with the Toowoomba Suicide Prevention Network, are inviting the community to attend a walk at Picnic Point on Sunday, September 10, starting at 10am. The Out of the Shadows walk is an annual national Lifeline event designed to raise awareness, remember those lost to suicide, and for family and friends to unite in a commitment to prevent further deaths by suicide. Australia is in the midst of a national emergency with suicide rates at an all time high. In 2014 there were 648 confirmed suicides in Queensland which is higher than the lives taken by road fatalities each year. the home pool safety checklist to make sure your pool fence, pool gate and latch is in working order. The checklist does not substitute for a pool inspection. We urge you to get professional advice about your pool’s compliance, check regulations with their local council or go to the local hardware or pool shop to discuss how to ensure the pool is made safer in time for summer. Adequate pool fencing is not a substitute for active supervision. “The sobering facts are that every three hours a person takes their own life in Australia and it is the leading cause of death amongst those aged 15 to 44 years, with men being three times more likely to die by suicide than females,” LDDSWQL, CEO, Derek Tuffield said. It is sad to note that the Darling Downs region is over represented in the national suicide statistics with over 45 suicides each year being recorded. It is important to remember that help is available 24/7 by calling Lifeline’s Crisis Support line 13 11 14. Entry to the event is free. However, attendees are asked to register their participation on Event- Brite http://bit.ly/2x5V2qf. ADVERTISEMENT Always keep watch of children around water. Last summer saw a tragic number of lives lost to drowning, with rates more than four times the 10-year average between Christmas and New Year. Sadly, children accounted for a significant portion of these preventable tragedies. We don’t want to see the same devastating impact this summer so please make this weekend your home pool safety weekend. - Justin Scarr, CEO, Royal Life Saving Society Australia. Price of idyllic lifestyle To Marg NcNamara of "Development Concerns," last week’s Herald - two questions: 1. What happened to the trees that were destroyed to allow your house to be built among the "idyllic lifestyle?" 2. Where did the timber come from to frame and line your house. Timber which helps keep your house warm and strong? Plus a note, the tree stumps depicted on television news last week were certainly not of the gum tree variety, the habitat of koalas. - Len Wilmington, Crows Nest. Flag - symbol of the nation September 3 commemorates the day in 1901 when our Australian national flag was flown for the first time, marking the federation of the Australian colonies to form the Commonwealth of Australia. Our national flag was the result of a competition in which there were 32,823 entries. Five of those which contained almost identical designs were placed equal first with a prize money of 200 pounds. A 14-year-old school boy was among the winners. Apart from changes in the magnitude of the stars and the number of points, some eight years later, they had produced the present Australian National flag which demonstrates our national identity, our heritage and our geographical place in the world. September 3 has been proclaimed Australian National Flag Day. Let us keep it as our internationally acclaimed symbol of Australia. - Winsome Rusterholtz, Highfields. HIGHFIELDS STATE SECONDARY COLLEGE Construction continues as numbers grow The Cafe at Abbie Lane 6 x 2 A consistent program of construction continues at Highfields State Secondary College with the structure and roof of yet another new building almost complete. This building has reached this stage in just eight weeks, and will be the first of three new buildings in stage three of the school. It is a general learning building containing seven classrooms and should be ready for use at the beginning of next year. Next to this will be a two-storey building, with eight classrooms on the top floor, and initially the ground floor will be open until more rooms are required. The third building in stage three will be a sports hall near the school oval. This is to be constructed next year in readiness for the start of school in 2019. Stage three is being built by F.K. Gardner who built stage one of the college. Stage two was built by McNab. The Highfields State Secondary College opened in 2015 with 262 year 7 and 8 students. In 2016, 474 students were enrolled, and this year numbers increased to 689. It is predicted there should be 850 students in 2018, and more than 1000 in 2019. One wonders where these students would be had Highfields College not been approved. Principal Sharon Barker said the Mt Lofty and Wilsonton high schools have not had significant changes to their enrolments as a result of the establishment of Highfields College. She thought that many of the students at Highfields might have been in private schools. - MILES NOLLER.
