BEEF EXPO TOOWOOMBA
Horned Herefords continue to command a market
By MILES NOLLER
The demise of cattle with horns occurred
decades ago, and most beef producers
breed only polled cattle.
Yet there continues to be a demand for
horned Herefords despite animal welfare
issues and the call for painkillers in the
dehorning process.
Experienced Hampton cattle breeder
Neville Shannon producers both polled
and horned Herefords.
He said there are graziers who continue
to demand his horned Herefords.
Some are from the North Burnett area
near Monto, who want Herefords with
horns, not only for better protection
against dogs, but more importantly, for
genetic reasons.
Mr Shannon said the horned Herefords
seemed to have more consistent genetics,
and were more consistent “doers.”
The spread of fat in the carcase was
good, particularly inter muscular fat
(marbling) and they had a good temperament.
“We need cattle that survive when it’s
tough, and thrive when conditions are
better.”
Mr Shannon said Polled Herefords
went through a stage when they had very
small frames and then they became very
big with the introduction of North American
bloodlines.
Now they seem to have settled on a size
similar to the horned animals.
Mr Shannon and his family do most
of their stud breeding at their Hampton,
Merritts Creek Road, property, but run
a commercial herd at Hurford Downs at
Texas. They supply the Wyalla Feedlot
with steers which consistently have a fat
marble score of two, used for a special
market in the European Community, but
said the feedlot cannot get enough Hereford
cattle like this.
market. Export slaughter lines of heavy grown steers
and bullocks also experienced some improvement in
price and cows were generally dearer by 5c/kg. Light
weight yearling steers returning to the paddock mostly
