Here’s to the Rodeo Queen
◄ National Rodeo Association Rodeo Queen Kayhla Small at
the Fossil Downs Bush Rodeo at Murphy’s Creek on Saturday.
Kayhla from Ropely, near Gatton, led the grand parade on her
Palomino Australian Stock Horse. She is a barrel racer with a couple
of championships. It was the 10th Fossil Downs Bush Rodeo in
a clearing on a bush block near Murphy’s Creek, and in that time
has raised $40,000, much of it for the renal and oncology units at
Backyard swimming pool safety
I write to you as CEO of Royal
Life Saving Society Australia
with an important message for
your readers. Please check your
backyard pool fence, gate and
latch.
Inadequate pool fencing and
pool gates that are faulty remain
a major contributing factor in
the rate of drowning in backyard
swimming pools among children
under 5.
Royal Life Saving have developed
a home pool safety checklist
which allows you to conduct
Payments to Council
payments. You can pay rates, water notices
and animal registrations by credit card on
Three Lakes Survey
Whether you splash, paddle, walk or fish, we
know how much people love visiting our dams
and we’re working on a review to optimise
our recreational opportunities. We want to
hear from you on how you use the dams and
suggestions for the future. Be sure to have your
say at yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au
Community Survey
We’re conducting a region wide survey to find
out your satisfaction with Council services. This
is your opportunity to let us know what you think
we are doing well and where we could improve.
The results will help us identify priorities for our
region and improve services and communication
with our communities. To find out more go to
a self assessment of your home
pool and its surrounds to ensure
it is safe for everyone to enjoy
and minimises the risk of young
children drowning.
Often pool owners don’t realise
that their pool fence or gate
is faulty which poses a threat to
children’s safety. Pool fences,
pool gates and latches should
be regularly checked and maintained
as parts can break or become
defective over time.
We are hoping for more than
I would like to thank all of our
To mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Lifeline
Darling Downs and South West Qld Ltd, in
conjunction with the Toowoomba Suicide Prevention
Network, are inviting the community to attend
a walk at Picnic Point on Sunday, September
10, starting at 10am.
The Out of the Shadows walk is an annual national
Lifeline event designed to raise awareness,
remember those lost to suicide, and for family and
friends to unite in a commitment to prevent further
deaths by suicide.
Australia is in the midst of a national emergency
with suicide rates at an all time high. In 2014 there
were 648 confirmed suicides in Queensland which
is higher than the lives taken by road fatalities
each year.
the home pool safety checklist
to make sure your pool fence,
pool gate and latch is in working
order.
The checklist does not substitute
for a pool inspection.
We urge you to get professional
advice about your pool’s compliance,
check regulations with
their local council or go to the
local hardware or pool shop to
discuss how to ensure the pool is
made safer in time for summer.
Adequate pool fencing is not a
substitute for active supervision.
“The sobering facts are that every three hours
a person takes their own life in Australia and it is
the leading cause of death amongst those aged 15
to 44 years, with men being three times more likely
to die by suicide than females,” LDDSWQL,
CEO, Derek Tuffield said.
It is sad to note that the Darling Downs region
is over represented in the national suicide statistics
with over 45 suicides each year being recorded.
It is important to remember that help is available
24/7 by calling Lifeline’s Crisis Support line 13
11 14.
Entry to the event is free. However, attendees
are asked to register their participation on Event-
Always keep watch of children
around water. Last summer saw
a tragic number of lives lost to
drowning, with rates more than
four times the 10-year average
between Christmas and New
Year. Sadly, children accounted
for a significant portion of these
preventable tragedies.
We don’t want to see the same
devastating impact this summer
so please make this weekend
your home pool safety weekend.
Price of idyllic lifestyle
To Marg NcNamara of "Development
Concerns," last
week’s Herald - two questions:
1. What happened to the
trees that were destroyed to
allow your house to be built
among the "idyllic lifestyle?"
2. Where did the timber
come from to frame and line
your house. Timber which
helps keep your house warm
and strong?
Plus a note, the tree stumps
depicted on television news
last week were certainly not of
the gum tree variety, the habitat
of koalas. - Len Wilmington,
Flag - symbol of the nation
September 3 commemorates the day in 1901 when our Australian
national flag was flown for the first time, marking the federation
of the Australian colonies to form the Commonwealth of Australia.
Our national flag was the result of a competition in which there
were 32,823 entries. Five of those which contained almost identical
designs were placed equal first with a prize money of 200 pounds. A
14-year-old school boy was among the winners.
Apart from changes in the magnitude of the stars and the number
of points, some eight years later, they had produced the present Australian
National flag which demonstrates our national identity, our
heritage and our geographical place in the world.
September 3 has been proclaimed Australian National Flag Day.
Let us keep it as our internationally acclaimed symbol of Australia.
HIGHFIELDS STATE SECONDARY COLLEGE
Construction continues as numbers grow
The Cafe at
Abbie Lane
6 x 2
A consistent program of construction
continues at Highfields State Secondary
College with the structure and roof of yet
another new building almost complete.
This building has reached this stage in
just eight weeks, and will be the first of
three new buildings in stage three of the
school.
It is a general learning building containing
seven classrooms and should be
ready for use at the beginning of next
year.
Next to this will be a two-storey building,
with eight classrooms on the top
floor, and initially the ground floor will
be open until more rooms are required.
The third building in stage three will
be a sports hall near the school oval.
This is to be constructed next year in
readiness for the start of school in 2019.
Stage three is being built by F.K. Gardner
who built stage one of the college.
Stage two was built by McNab.
The Highfields State Secondary College
opened in 2015 with 262 year 7 and
8 students.
In 2016, 474 students were enrolled,
and this year numbers increased to 689.
It is predicted there should be 850
students in 2018, and more than 1000 in
2019.
One wonders where these students
would be had Highfields College not
been approved.
Principal Sharon Barker said the Mt
Lofty and Wilsonton high schools have
not had significant changes to their enrolments
as a result of the establishment
of Highfields College. She thought that
many of the students at Highfields might
have been in private schools. - MILES
Show society fails to elect management committee
The recent annual general
meeting of the Crows Nest Show
Society on August 25 failed to
elect a management committee.
Under the society’s association
rules, the management
committee members shall be a
president, treasurer, secretary
and vice presidents, the number
of which shall be determined per
rule 17 of the association, one of
whom shall be the senior vice
president.
Show society secretary Barry
Miller said advice he received
from the Office of Fair Trading
who administer the adoption of
the association rules under the
Associations Incorporation Act
1981 was that while a president
and three vice presidents had
been nominated, none of them
are able to fill office due to an
incorrect voting procedure being
conducted.
Mr Miller said a special general
meeting of the society now
needs to be called to finalise
matters not decided at the annual
meeting.
These matters are the election
of president, treasurer, vice presidents,
the number of which may
be determined by the association,
but not to exceed six, and
one of whom shall be the senior
vice president, signatories to
financial accounts and appointment
of an auditor.
The candidates, proposers
and seconders must all be financial
members of the association
and the candidates must have
Stanhope Jonsson - Highfields
residen: “I’ve been resident
of Highfields for 18 years
and have noticed the dramatic
changes and not all for the better,
with the development of
small housing blocks. Highfields
was appreciated for open space,
green areas and lifestyle.
“We need to identify a centre
that reflects the ideal lifestyle.
Council won’t do it. And I commend
the Highfields and District
leadership in this.
“I’m disturbed at the lack of
facilities for the numbers of students
who will be leaving school
in a couple of years.
“Highfields has been regarded
as a dormitory suburb, but
we now need facilities here to
here in their community.”
Cam Mackenzie - Principal,
Amaroo Environmental Education
Centre, Kleinton: “We
need to be selling and singing
sustainability for all ages and my
simple definition of sustainability
is ‘enough for all forever’.
“And for Highfields this includes
the people, business, and
the place.
“Highfields needs a community
Community barbecue
for inland Aussies
A barbecue at Tom Volp Park, Meringandan, will be held
this Sunday, September 10, to raise funds to help people in
western Queensland who are suffering the accumulated effects
of the present and previous droughts.
It is being hosted by a number of Meringandan community
groups who have been supported by local businesses, as a
way of saying to our fellow Aussies out west, we care.
The rural fire brigade are cooking for the barbecue, with
all barbecue proceeds, plus profits from the sale of drinks,
being donated. Entry is a $2 coin or note donation per person,
which covers the barbecue, tea and coffee. Soft drinks
will be on sale at $1 each.
Come yourself, bring your friends or bring your whole
family, just come and let those out west know that someone
cares.
More recreation, tourism suggested for dams
Toowoomba’s three water
supply dams, Cooby, Perservance
and Cressbrook, have a
second purpose, for recreation,
sport and tourism, and these uses
for the dams are now under review.
Consultation meetings were
held in Toowoomba and Highfields
last week, to seek public
opinion about how best the dams
might be used, providing fishing,
boating, camping and other
groups an opportunity to have
their say.
The review is being conducted
by consultants, Otium Planning
Group, and director Martin
Lambert and senior consultant
Julie Nicholls ran last week’s
meetings.
They have also conducted a
survey among interested groups,
and said they were pleased that
520 survey forms were completed
and returned.
The public consultation was
seeking opinions on the activities
currently undertaken at the
dams, and what uses that might
be permitted in the future.
The project is known as the
Three Lakes Review and the
consultants are expected to report
to the council with recommendations
in November or December,
and Council is expected
to respond early next year.
At the Highfields meeting, Cr
Joe Ramia said the first purpose
of the three lakes was to provide
drinking water for more than
100,000 in the Toowoomba Region,
and how other activities
affected water treatment needed
to be kept in mind.
Consultant Martin Lambert
said Federal legislation protected
the dam infrastructure, such
as the dam wall, and these walls
were restricted areas.
He said erosion of the banks,
and pollution had an impact on
water quality, and bush fires
were also a risk.
However, many recreational
activities were compatible and
some wanted to see the opening
up of Lake Perservance to fishing
and fish stocking.
Some wanted better access
for water skiing, and the use of
small petrol outboard engines,
with speed limits, on the dams
including Cooby.
The three lakes were described
as potential great tourist
attractions, and there was a suggestion
for a green hiking trail
from Crows Nest, through the
Valley of Diamonds, to Perservance
Dam, then to Cressbrook
Dam and along the escarpment
to Toowoomba.
MP welcomes improved
Optus coverage
Member for Groom Dr John
McVeigh has welcomed news
that Optus will improve services
across Groom in its $1 billion
upgrade and expansion of its
mobile network in regional Australia.
Dr McVeigh said Optus has
revealed that within the next 18
months residents in Toowoomba,
Highfields, Haden and
Hampton should receive better
services on the Optus network.
“Regional communities rely
on mobile networks to support
their key industries,” Dr
McVeigh said. “We need good
coverage to assist with education,
health services, agriculture
and other industries across the
Darling Downs.”
“As technology adapts we are
relying on the mobile network to
provide better download speeds
for data-hungry applications
such as video streaming and
advanced technologies such as
cloud and cyber security that
will propel regional businesses
into new national and international
markets,” he said.
“As we make this shift into
the digital age we need to ensure
the entire region has adequate
service.
Dr McVEIGH
Connectivity essential
"Connectivity is becoming
essential in the business world.”
Optus last month revealed
it would build 500 new mobile
towers across regional and remote
parts of Australia including
114 sites under the Federal Government’s
Mobile Blackspots
Program.
Optus would also complete its
4G upgrade program which will
upgrade more than 1800 sites
from 3G to 4G technology and
add additional 4G capacity to
more than 200 sites.
Dr McVeigh said the investment
by Optus would improve
overall network performance
for residents and businesses and
will also help build the network
resilience that is critical to supporting
public safety and emergency
services during natural
disasters.
“I have been informed by Optus
that this will mean better services
at Toowoomba, Highfields,
Haden and Hampton by the end
of 2018,” Dr McVeigh said.
“Regional Australia needs the
same leading edge technologies
available in metropolitan markets
as we continue to grow and
prosper.”
“I have been in contact with a
number of the network providers
discussing the existing black
spots in the Groom electorate in
a bid to have these built into the
next program of works,” he said.
“As I tour the electorate customer
service expectations is a
recurring theme with residents
I have also been emphasising
to the major telecommunications
companies as a need for focus as
the market place becomes more
competitive.”
New Warrego Highway arrangements
From Wednesday, September
6, motorists will be travelling
on the brand new alignment of
the Warrego Highway between
Charlton and Zimm’s corner,
with a traffic switch planned
for next week. During the night
of Tuesday, September 5, both
eastbound and westbound traffic
will be moved to the newly constructed
eastbound carriageway,
approximately five kilometres to
the east of Kingsthorpe-Haden
Road.
To the west of Kingsthorpe-Haden
Road, traffic will continue
to use the new westbound
carriageway while upgrade
works are carried out on the existing
road.
Reduced speed limits, directional
signage and traffic control
will be in place during the traffic
switch. Motorists are asked
to obey directional signage
and take care while travelling
through the area.
Around Groom with McVeigh
There has been a lot of media
in the past few weeks about activities
in the Federal Parliament and
whilst there has been plenty happening
I fear much of it is a distraction
from what Australians are
really concerned about.
The sooner the citizenship
row that is affecting all parties is
cleaned up the better and I personally
believe that stunts in Canberra
such as wearing burqas in the
chamber have no place in our nation’s
parliament.
All of the people I’ve spoken to
across our electorate of Groom in
recent weeks aren’t really interested
in these sorts of issues and are
more concerned about cost of living,
national security in an uncertain
world and ensuring that our
government is striving to make
gains for families and small businesses.
In just the last two sitting weeks
the Government continued to make
decisions in the best interests of our
communities. We are taking decisive
action to reduce energy prices
to ensure Australian families are
not paying a cent more than they
have to for their power.
Gas companies will have to prioritise
domestic market supplies if
required to help keep energy prices
down; electricity companies are
now expected to help customers
get better cheaper deals; Snowy
Hydro 2.0 is being implemented to
increase energy supplies and storage;
and the Government remains
committed to opportunities for low
emissions coal fired supplies and as
well as renewables. All options are
on the table as we demand reliable
and affordable power supplies for
everyone.
We have passed laws to level the
playing field for small businesses,
enabling them to better compete
against big businesses which have
substantial market power. The opposition
voted against these changes.
We passed laws to ban secret
payments between unions and
big businesses so that conditions
and arrangements in the interest
of workers across the country are
transparent and fair.
The government has maintained
its promise to allow every Australian
to have their say on the question
of same sex marriage. The
postal plebiscite process is underway
and we will know what the
whole Australian population’s view
is in the coming months.
We passed reforms to online
gambling to ensure that children
are protected from illegal online
gambling sites.
We introduced legislation to
ensure the National Disability Insurance
scheme is fully funded and
fully paid for. Once fully rolled out
the Disability Insurance Scheme
will benefit 460,000 Australians.
We introduced stronger laws to
crack down on money laundering
and the funding of terrorism.
Despite the distractions thrown
up by many, the fact is that the
Government is getting on with the
job implementing the commitments
we took to the last election in the
interests of all Australians.
I look forward to proving updates
in future columns and as always
welcome any queries to my
office.
Until next month regards,
John
Family ballet favourite
comes to the Empire
A popular family favourite because of its engaging
story, colourful humour and beautiful
dancing, this stunning production will leave
you applauding for more.
Set in the French countryside in the 1950s,
La Fille mal Gardée delights and entertains audiences
as a love triangle creates comic chaos.
Lise loves Colas. Colas loves Lise. But
Lise’s mother, the Widow Simone, has agreed
that her wayward daughter should marry Alain,
son of a pompous, wealthy vineyard owner.
Garden club meeting
The Crows Nest Garden Club will
have its next meeting on September
9 at Elaine Greenwood’s garden, 2
Showground Terrace, Crows Nest
starting at 1.30pm.
Members are invited to bring any
garden produce, fruit or vegetables on
a saucer or small plate for the bench
display for the day.
Just a reminder to bring a chair and
a plate to share and wear stout shoes to
walk around Elaine’s garden.
Alain however, is more interested in his
precious umbrella than romance.What ensues
is a series of mischievous antics as Lise
works her way out of the Widow’s marriage
contract and into the arms of her love-struck
beau.
“The French countryside has never been
so explosively joyous as in Queensland Ballet’s
new production of La Fille Mal Gardee.”
TRAINING AREA/
RANGE NOISE NOTICE
Residents to areas surrounding the Cabarlah Training Area
are warned that it is a Defence live firing range and to expect
periods of heightened noise volume.
Defence training includes firing practices with live ammunition,
explosives, simulation devices and lasers that generally occur
daily between 0700h – 1600h. Night time practices also occur
and are generally completed before 2200h. During these
core operating hours, residence in the surrounding areas may
experience louder than normal noise levels. This could be due
to a change in weather conditions or wind direction, or due
to the type of munitions or simulation devices being employed
to achieve a training outcome.
Defence now has the capability to notify residences
of increased periods of noise volume on the training area via
an SMS alert. These alerts are intended to advise residence
of an increased level of forecasted training area noise over
a prescribed period of time. If you wish to be included in
this notification process please contact range control on
Life membership for long service
Another 12 months have passed and the
Crows Nest Historical Society has held its
annual general meeting.
All executive have been re-elected with the exception
of Maurice Costello who stood down and
the election of collections officer, Sue Noordhuis.
Maurice was awarded life membership in recognition
of his long service in many roles including
treasurer, secretary, collections officer and
head of the catering team, and for lovingly restoring
the aged furniture throughout the museum to
its rightful glory.
The covered wagon and the picnic shed
have been moved from the front of the museum
grounds. These changes were made to accommodate
the new building that will serve as an information
centre.
School children from around the Toowoomba
region, sporting groups, special interest clubs,
retirement village groups and tourists have been
enjoying the revitalised museum/village since
volunteer Bob Ramsay has diligently repainted
the buildings.
Sadly, not many locals visit the museum and
President Len Wilmington, right, presenting
Maurice Costello with life membership beside
the 1813 piano he so lovingly restored.
bring their visitors. FREE admission is offered
to locals who bring paying guests who provide
much appreciated entrance fees, vital for the
maintenance, restoration and improvements to
the exhibits.
Those who have not visited in the last couple
of years will be pleasantly surprised at the improvements
and enjoy an hour or more strolling
around the village talking to people and remembering
things that make up the local heritage and
that can be experienced here.
Every Thursday from 8am to noon, volunteers get together
to have a cuppa and cake and do a bit around the museum.
YOU are very welcome to come along. For more information
BEEF EXPO TOOWOOMBA
Horned Herefords continue to command a market
By MILES NOLLER
The demise of cattle with horns occurred
decades ago, and most beef producers
breed only polled cattle.
Yet there continues to be a demand for
horned Herefords despite animal welfare
issues and the call for painkillers in the
dehorning process.
Experienced Hampton cattle breeder
Neville Shannon producers both polled
and horned Herefords.
He said there are graziers who continue
to demand his horned Herefords.
Some are from the North Burnett area
near Monto, who want Herefords with
horns, not only for better protection
against dogs, but more importantly, for
genetic reasons.
Mr Shannon said the horned Herefords
seemed to have more consistent genetics,
and were more consistent “doers.”
The spread of fat in the carcase was
good, particularly inter muscular fat
(marbling) and they had a good temperament.
“We need cattle that survive when it’s
tough, and thrive when conditions are
better.”
Mr Shannon said Polled Herefords
went through a stage when they had very
small frames and then they became very
big with the introduction of North American
bloodlines.
Now they seem to have settled on a size
similar to the horned animals.
Mr Shannon and his family do most
of their stud breeding at their Hampton,
Merritts Creek Road, property, but run
a commercial herd at Hurford Downs at
Texas. They supply the Wyalla Feedlot
with steers which consistently have a fat
marble score of two, used for a special
market in the European Community, but
said the feedlot cannot get enough Hereford
cattle like this.
Market Quotes: There was a small reduction in supply
and the vast majority of the young cattle either sold
to feeder operators or restockers with only a handful
to slaughter.. H feeder operators provided stronger
competition on yearling steers to feed for the domestic
market. Export slaughter lines of heavy grown steers
and bullocks also experienced some improvement in
price and cows were generally dearer by 5c/kg. Light
weight yearling steers returning to the paddock mostly
sold to a top 339.2c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers
to slaughter averaged 258c and made to 270c while
some poor quality lines mostly sold around 232c/kg.
A handful of well presented heavy weight yearling
heifers sold to the trade at 285.2c/kg. Heavy grown
steers to export slaughter made to 269.2c the bullock
portion averaged 268c with the occasional sale to the
wholesale meat trade at 280.2c/kg. Medium weight
2 score cows averaged 190c while Good heavy cows
Heritage Banks helps students hone their skills
Students from Crows Nest
State School are honing their
gardening and cooking skills
with a helping hand from Heritage
Bank Crows Nest Community
Branch.
Heritage Bank and Crows
Nest Community Branch joint
venture partner Progressive
Community Crows Nest PCCN
provided Crows Nest State
School with a community grant
of $6,400 to develop a unique
horticulture and cooking program
called “Grow Cook Taste”.
Spearheaded by Crows Nest
State School teacher Ashley
Genrich and local chef Kate
Nicholas, Grow Cook Taste is
now in its second semester and
has been extended from the high
school to the primary school.
“We are so grateful for the
support from Heritage Bank
Crows Nest and PCCN,” Mr
Genrich said.
“These funds have helped us
to create this unique hands-on
program for our students. It’s a
point of difference for our school
and something we’re very proud
of.
“The students have a hand in
everything, from growing the
produce in our dedicated gardens
to using this food in a cooking
class.
"They learn about horticulture,
food preparation, how to
create different flavours, knife
safety skills and much more.
“It provides a real sense of
achievement for the students to
be part of the process from start
to finish.”
The students showed their impressive
skills recently, inviting
staff from Heritage Bank to view
the gardens built from the grant,
and then judge a cooking competition
between the students
and teachers.
Heritage Crows Nest Branch
Sales and Service Manager Aimee
Skaines said,
“We were thoroughly impressed
with the skills and passion
shown by the students taking
part in this unique program.
“We’re a close-knit community
and have built really strong
relationships with our customers.
"It’s so rewarding for us to
have the opportunity to support
fantastic initiatives like Grow
Cook Taste.
“The beauty of being a community
branch is that the more
people bank with us, the more
we are able to give back through
grants and sponsorship. It’s
all about working together to
achieve great things.”
Heritage Bank’s Crows Nest
and Highfields branches operate
under the community branch
model as a joint-venture between
Heritage Bank and the local
community, represented by a
company called PCCN, Progressive
Community Crows Nest.
Under the Heritage model, the
community company’s share of
profits is given back as grants to
community organisations, charities
and worthy causes.
from the Highfields or Crows
Nest area and would like to
apply for a Community Grant,
New Hope directors on morale
boosting visit to Oakey
Back: Jamie Kemshead, Bill Grant, Todd Barlow, Tom Millner, Andrew Boyd and Matthew
Busch Front: Robert Millner, Shane Stephan, Sue Palmer and Janelle Moody
New Acland miners received a morale boosting
visit from the New Hope Group Board of Directors
last Wednesday.
Members of the board, led by Chairman Robert
Millner and Managing Director Shane Stephan,
spent two days touring parts of the local area,
including New Acland Mine and the Company’s
Oakey Community Centre.
“Our workers have had a pretty rough time over
the past 12 months waiting for the Stage 3 Project
to secure its state government approvals,” Mr
Millner said.
“At the end of the day they want to know whether
their job and their family’s future are secure.
“We wanted to demonstrate to our workforce
that not only do they have the overwhelming support
of the local community, they have the full
backing of the New Hope board.”
The board began the visit with their quarterly
board meeting at the New Acland Mine before
spending several hours touring mining operations
and speaking with employees.
“New Acland truly is an innovation hub and it
was great to see some of health and wellness initiatives
that helped New Acland win the Health
Program Award at the recent Queensland Mining
Industry Health and Safety Conference,” Mr Millner
said.
“Coming from a family with cattle grazing
background, I also found it particularly rewarding
to visit the 490ha of mined land that is now fully
rehabilitated and being grazed by cattle,” Mr Millner
said.
“We are committed to seeing Stage 3 go ahead
and we want the community to know we understand
how important this Project is for the local
area and we are behind them all the way.”
leafshield gutter protection
Clean gutters, clean tank water
Leafshield Gutter Protection
is a family owned business operating
in Queensland since 1995.
We install quality gutter
guards to suit most roof types,
and our system is designed to fit
over any roof or gutter.
If you rely on tank water, it is
important that the water is able
to flow freely through the gutter
system unrestricted to the tanks.
With even a small quantity of
leaves in the gutter system, gutters
can overflow and cause loss
of precious tank water.
Leaf debris is the perfect host
for bacteria that causes your tank
water to become unusable and
require costly maintenance.
Installing Leafshield’s gutter
guard removes the hassle and
danger of home owners cleaning
their own gutters or valleys.
We install a range of meshes,
including fire-rated aluminium,
stainless steel and our heavy
FISHING
CABARLAH: This month, the club trip was to
Coolmunda Dam which is currently at 95 per cent.
The weather was not the best with strong southerly
winds blowing on Friday and Saturday. The Sunday
morning weather was the pick of the weekend.
There were 14 members in attendance but unfortunately
not a lot of fish were caught. The
largest of those caught were: Yellow Belly Ron
Gwydir 1.71kg, Jew Wayne Sommerfield 1.98kg,
Silver Perch Wayne Sommerfield 1.10kg
The club has welcomed a new member, Anthony
White, and his son Jared as a junior member.
Next trip Bjelke Petersen Dam September 9 and
10, as water levels are still at 20 per cent. Recent
reports indicate that although the level is dropping
and some areas are shallow, the main basins are
fishing well. There will be a club sausage sizzle
held on the Saturday night for all members to
enjoy. Hamish Classic
The Hamish Classic is being held again this
year by Downlands College in memory of Hamish
Stewart. The tournament will be held on September
23, also at Bjelke-Petersen Dam. Each year the
club supports Downlands College and the Stewart
family by making a donation towards the tournament
prizes. - Emily Gale.
