Find your way to spring
A health and body check might be just what
you need this spring.
Have you ever thought
you should get your
sore knee checked out
and put it off? How about that
colonoscopy your doctor told
you to have last year? Make
your health a priority this September
and have a general
health check-up.
Sometimes it can be the
little things that stop you from
reaching your goals in the
gym, on the track or even in
improving your general health.
Sore lower backs, shoulders or
necks can be frustrating at the
best of times. Deciding to get
these things checked out by a
professional is a good idea and
important for your personal
strength and fitness success
and to prevent any ongoing
musculoskeletal and medical
issues. With the coming of longer
and warmer days this is the
perfect time to walk the dog
after work, meet some friends
for a jog, or climb that mountain
peak where you’ve been
wanting to watch the sunrise.
Start this spring with a
clean slate and if something
is up, that’s what the routine
check-up with your doctor
is for. Next, for any aches or
pains you feel warrant a trip
to the physiotherapist, book
yourself in and get on top of it
early. The physiotherapist will
provide treatment, advice and
exercises to provide relief and
help resolve the issue, all integral
in helping you make a full
recovery.
Following this, if you are
aware of muscle imbalances or
areas of weakness that cause
pain or problems when you exercise,
or you are limited in exercise
due to a chronic disease,
then schedule a musculoskeletal
assessment and receive appropriate
exercise prescription
and an exercise rehabilitation
programme. Feel free to drop
into UniRec at the University of
Waikato Hamilton campus to
have a chat with friendly staff
there if you would like to find
out how they can help you get
on track with your goals. With
the right exercise plan in place
you will be able to progress
your exercises as necessary and
hopefully you will enjoy the
summer of 2017/2018 to its
fullest and 2018 will turn into
a productive and active year.
Some chronic diseases that
research has proven to benefit
from exercise: insulin resistance,
types 1 and 2 diabetes,
dyslipidemia, hypertension,
obesity, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, coronary
heart disease, chronic heart
failure, intermittent claudication,
osteoarthritis, rheumatoid
arthritis, osteoporosis,
fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue
syndrome, cancer, depression,
and asthma.
Enduring power of attorney
protect your future
This month we are bringing to your attention
the importance of having an Enduring Power
of Attorney.
What is this you might
say and why do I
need it?
It is a legal document that
is witnessed and prepared
for you under your instructions
to enable a person who
you choose as your Attorney
to make decisions about your
assets and liabilities when you
can no longer do this for yourself.
Life can be fragile and
therefore it is important that
everyone should think about
protecting their future. So you
need to choose someone who
you trust to make decisions for
you when and if you are no
longer able to do this for yourself.
Often we need someone
to make health decisions for
us regarding our personal care
and welfare as well as your
property and valuables.
List of considerations before
you see a legal advisor:-
1. Who do you want your Attorney
to be and also what
you do and don’t want them
to do on your behalf.
2. How you Attorney might
be supported, do you need
more than one Attorney.?
3. Friends, family solicitor accountant’s
advice.
4. Making a list of the main
things that you own, any
money owed to you and
have you any debts?
5. Who else should have a
copy of your EPA, your doctor,
dentist, bank, insurance
company and family/
whanau.
6. The date your EPA should
commence from?
7. How your Attorney might
be monitored such as by
appointing a second person
to oversee your financial records
and bank statements.
This could be done by having
two EPAs.
8. Who might step in as your
EPA if something suddenly
happens to the first one.
Pamphlets that show you a
list of the considerations you
need to make before choosing
your Attorney and presenting it
to a lawyer or the Public Trust
to witness, can be obtained
Log burners causing problems
for the elderly in South Island
We have an issue developing in the South Island
which could have serious implications for the
vulnerable elderly and very young throughout
the rest of the country.
BY TOM O’CONNOR
PRESIDENT
GREY POWER FEDERATION
Like many coastal towns
Timaru has a serious
winter air quality problem
with industrial coal fired
boilers, heavy trucks and solid
fuel home heaters creating
heavy smog during the winter
months.
Some regional councils,
which are responsible for the
development of Regional Air
Plans have taken a practical
approach to the issue but
others, including Environment
Canterbury require log
burners more than 15 years
old to be replaced regardless
of efficiency. We now have
people, who can’t afford a
new log burner, living in unheated
homes in the South
Island winter, through fear of
a penalty for having a smoky
chimney.
Apparently a number of
engineering companies offered
to upgrade older style
log burners to meet the new
standards. It is a relatively
straightforward operation
which is done on a regular
basis and in most cases can
The thought of moving
house overwhelming?
Move Managers takes the stress out of preparing your home for sale,
downsizing, moving or just wanting to get organised. When you’re
faced with the challenge of downsizing to a smaller home or need help
clearing a home for sale, Move Managers is here to help. It’s easy to get
started. Just give us a call, we’ll visit you to discuss your needs.
The initial visit is free. Police checked, insured, references.
Now in our 5th busy year.
40317
be done with the log burner
in place. That offer was either
declined or ignored.
There was also a suggestion
that older style log burners
should only be replaced
when the house was sold but
that was also rejected. There
are also available in New Zealand
Swiss made electrostatic
chimney filters which have
been successfully trialed and
approved over most of Europe.
They would cost around
$2500 to buy and have fitted
but, compared with between
$5000 and $10,000 for a
new log burner which many
people simply cannot afford.
Once again, the Canterbury
Regional Council has refused
to consider anything other
than taking out older log
burners.
More recently when the
possibility of upgrading older
log burners was again raised,
Environment Canterbury refused
to consider the possibility,
claiming that it was
too late for amendments and
it would take a prolonged
and costly plan change process.
They also claimed the
log burners would need to
be taken out of the house
to be rebuilt and laboratory
tested. As abatement notices
and penalties can be imposed
for visible chimney smoke regardless
of the age of the log
burner the 15 year restriction
and claimed laboratory testing
of upgraded log burners
are unnecessary.
South Island district health
boards advise that air quality
and home heating are intrinsically
linked and both
have implications for human
health. That means they must
be managed in balance. It is
irresponsible to frighten people
into living without winter
heating with illogical rules to
clean up the air they breathe.
Cold winter homes pose a major
threat to the health of the
elderly and the very young. To
put these people at unnecessary
risk because a regional
council is too stubborn and arrogant
to listen to the community
they are supposed to serve
is simply unacceptable.
All political parties will be
asked if they would allow
older style log burners anywhere
in the country to be
upgraded and their responses
will be published in the Grey
Power Magazine before the
general election.
GET A FREE WOF…
…on your insurance policy
You get your car checked over every year by
an expert – for peace of mind and to make
sure it’s still up to the job. Well – it’s just as
important to have your insurance policies
checked over by an expert as well, to make
sure they’re fit for purpose and will pay out
when the time comes. Because claim time is
too late to find out.
With 35 years’ experience I know that some
policies, particularly those sold by banks or
bought online, leave a lot to be desired. They
have far too many ifs and buts, too many
restrictions and exclusions so are stacked in
favour of the insurance company. Despite
that they are often at the top end in terms of
cost.
Nobody wants to pay more for their insurance
than they need to – especially for a
second rate policy – so why not let me check
yours out to see how it stacks up? I will compare
your policy(s) with the competition and
prepare a short written report, which will be
entirely confidential and personalised to you.
It will either:
• confirm that you can give yourself a pat
yourself on the back because you already
have a great policy - or
• point out the areas where your policy
could cause you problems and/or whether
I can save you money. If either of these
applies I will also recommend a better
alternative that you can take up – or not –
your choice.
The following policies can be considered:
• Life insurance
• Trauma insurance (covers cancer, heart
attack, stroke etc…)
• Medical insurance
• Mortgage / Rent payment cover
• Income replacement cover
• House and contents cover
If you don’t have insurance but think you
should? No problem - let’s get together to
talk things over and I’ll design a plan to meet
your needs and fit your budget.
Rates rebates opportunities
Hamilton ratepayers on lower incomes may
be entitled to rebates
The Rates Rebate Scheme,
established by the Government,
is administered
by the council and can provide
a rates credit to low income
homeowners and ratepayers of
up to $620.
“You may be eligible if you
pay rates at your home address,
and were living there
from 1 July. The council’s website
has a link to a Department
of Internal Affairs calculator,
which ratepayers can use to
determine if they are eligible
for a rates rebate,” says council
corporate general manager,
David Bryant.
A further rates reduction
may be available where there
is extreme financial hardship.
“This rates remission policy is
additional to the government
scheme and allows council to
remit rates on a residential property
up to a maximum of $482.
“You must live at the property
and provide household
financial information – including,
most importantly proof of
household income and details
of any investments – as well
as meeting some conditions
and criteria,” Mr Bryant says.
Members of the Council
rates team will work with
ratepayers to determine if
their financial situation entitles
them to a rates rebate.
For further information or
help with your rates you can
phone 838 6688 to make an
appointment to discuss or visit
the council website.
The council rates team can
speak directly with ratepayers
about their eligibility for a rebate
at one of nine sessions
held across the city. Details of
the locations, dates and times
for the sessions can be found
on the council website.
For ratepayers who face
mobility or medical health issues
and cannot attend one
of the sessions – or visit council’s
main Municipal Building
for an appointment – staff
can make home visits, and
these will occur in October
and November.
Cambridge Menzshed
nearly two years old
From small beginnings two years ago, the
Cambridge Menzshed has grown into a
powerhouse of activity.
Operating out of a purpose-built
workshop
area in the Resthaven
Village Centre, there’s a happy,
noisy vibe at this shed, where
things get fixed or made, and
woodcraft knowledge and
opinions are shared.
The Menzshed philosophy is
to bring men together in one
community space to share their
skills, have a laugh, and work
on practical tasks individually
for their own personal projects,
or as a group for the shed or
community projects.
It’s open to the community
9am to 4pm every Wednesday,
and is now more commonly
known as the “Wednesday
Wood Workshop”. Dave Callaghan
has been there since the
beginning, and is the driving
force behind the shed. They get
a lot done at the shed – they
produce an incredible number
of wooden items, which they
sell. Planters, birdhouses, laundry
basket holders and dolls’
cradles, with the cradles and
birdhouses proving to be the
most popular. And if someone
wants a customised version,
Dave is happy to oblige. The
Views Craft Room, which is
down the hall from the Menzshed,
play their part by making
gorgeous quilt sets for the
dolls’ cradles. And the shed
has also become a popular
place for people to bring their
furniture for small repairs. The
crew will take care of these for
a donation.
Dave Callaghan (left) and Eric Hill (right)
The money raised from sales
and donations goes to a good
cause - to the Resthaven Foundation
Trust, who are active in
the community, fundraising for
services, facilities, and education
to help the elderly.
During the day there is a
steady stream of men and
women working in the shed
(despite its name, there’s no
requirement to be a man to
use the Menzshed). And there
are new people coming along
each week. In fact one of their
latest recruits found out about
it when he caught a glimpse
of the activity from the newly
completed cycle track adjacent
to the centre. He was curious,
came over to see what was
happening, and is now hooked.
Water - the word simply won’t go away,
especially when combined with politics
For years we have been told that no one owns
water and this is the reason why no one can
charge for water.
However, Regional councils
control the use of
water through a formal
consent process and then
charge the user a “monitoring
fee” often based on the volume
of water used. It is totally
understandable that users
think they are paying for the
water.
There are currently different
categories of water users.
The latest high profile are the
overseas companies who take
crystal clear water, bottle it,
and export significant volumes
overseas and make handsome
profits. They pay nothing for
the water and apart from a few
jobs at the bottling operation,
NZ (Inc ) does not benefit in any
JOKE CORNER
way. This seems dumb!
The next main category are
the irrigators. Different commercial
growers own and lease
significant land around Waharoa
and Matamata. They grow
vegetables mainly potatoes
and onions on a large commercial
scale. The normal management
of this operation requires
the growers to drill extremely
deep bores from which they
pump water and irrigate their
crops. Nothing different to a
home gardener who waters his
vegetables each night in summer
to keep his crop growing.
The water sustains the crop
and returns to the soil in a
continuous cycle. Should these
growers pay for the water they
use and if so, why?
Labour has proposed to tax
these users and use the income
to improve the water quality in
our rivers. This reasoning assumes
that the growers are in
fact contributing to the current
state of the rivers. Hard to justify
when they have drilled their
own bore on their own land,
are irrigating their own crop,
and the water goes back into
their own land to work its way
back down to the aquafers.
None of this water goes anywhere
near any rivers, but the
grower’s costs go up to pay the
tax and we all pay higher prices
at the supermarket. This also
seems dumb!
Dairying is an easy target
to blame for all the pollution
in the rivers. If we didn’t have
dairy cows would we have
pristine water? Probably not.
As one of those dairy farmers
I have complied with Fonterra’s
quality standards and
fenced every single drain and
waterway on my dairy farm.
This process controls the run
off from my paddocks into the
drains and eventually off to the
rivers. I am not allowed to irrigate
my paddocks during the
summer months using water
from my own duck pond. This
seems dumb.
Lastly we have the “townies”.
This group live in concentrated
areas and pump their
human waste off to the town
sewage ponds. There it starts
its treatment system until Cyclone
Cook arrives, overflows
the ponds and all that untreated
waste flows off directly
into the rivers. This is permitted
under the Councils resource
consent so no one pays to do
any clean up or improve their
systems. This seems dumb.
FLOAT THERAPY
Float your stresses away in the soothing relaxation of the
latest treatment available from Lifestyle Physiotherapy.
F
loat therapy is the latest addition to
the range of services offered, alongside
pre and post surgery rehabilitation,
exercise prescription, soft tissue
and joint mobilisation, manipulation and
acupuncture.
Physiotherapist and former Black Fern
Teresa Te Tamaki says that while float
therapy was once regarded as ‘hippy and
alternative’, these days the health benefits
are more widely recognised.
“Floating, just like acupuncture and
meditation, is now considered more
mainstream. It’s something we absolutely
recommend helping reduce stress and
anxiety and support pain management and
muscle recovery.”
The addition of a Dreampod float
therapy to Lifestyle Physiotherapy completes
the range of services available, with
a focus on complete health and wellbeing.
From elite athletes to children, the business
caters for a broad cross-section, with clinics
in St Andrews and Ngaruawahia.
“When you float there is no external
stimuli such as light and noise that we are
usually bombarded with throughout the
day, so the sensory areas of the brain that
normally process this information don’t
need to work as hard, which results in the
ultimate relaxation.
“The sanitised water is maintained at
body temperature and its high concentration
of Epsom Salts allows you to float with
no effort.”
The float therapy is open for bookings
this month and Teresa recommends
float therapy for everyone from athletes to
expectant mums.
As a new mum herself, she says the float
therapy can help relieve discomfort and
the feeling of weightlessness is instantly
relaxing.
“It’s also of benefit to those in high stress
jobs, or in chronic pain, and for athletes
the high concentration of Epsom Salts
(magnesium sulphate) helps with muscle
recovery. There are also detox benefits and
it improves circulation and rejuvenates the
skin.”
Advance bookings must be made and
full instructions are provided. Lifestyle
Physiotherapy’s float therapy will be open
late to allow people to float after work.
Your life’s story
Sometime within the next few months your
children will ask “what can I buy you for
Christmas?” How about a voucher for Dennis
Trotter to write your life story?
It’s often not until someone
dies that families realise
there’s a great deal about
mum or dad’s early life they
don’t know. They may have
heard snippets over the years,
but there are many gaps and
some interesting facts that have
simply never come to light.
Sometimes siblings have differing
opinions. Sadly, the one
person who can set the record
straight is no longer there.
This potential problem can
be overcome by a service offered
by former newspaper
editor, Dennis Trotter, who interviews
individuals (and family
members, if required) to create
a script titled “Your Life’s Story”.
He has vouchers available
and the donor can stipulate the
value. An ideal Christmas gift.
The life story can be produced
to fit a budget or the recipient
can choose something a little
more elaborate and pay the difference
between the actual cost
and the value of the voucher.
Dennis is able to give an estimate
of cost before undertaking
an assignment.
In most instances people
choose a fairly basic review
of their life, from childhood,
through their working and
married life, parenthood, business
or employment, sporting
interests, hobbies and eventual
retirement. With 2-10 photographs
included, something like
this can be produced for between
$400-$1400.
Other clients want just the
briefest story, suitable for reading
as an eulogy at a funeral,
Let me write
“Your Life’s Story”
while a few opt for something
more extensive. It is possible to
write a story that combines the
life of a couple – individual sections
before marriage and then
a story of their lives together,
from that point on.
He was prompted to establish
his business after being frequently
asked to prepare information
for eulogies which he is
sometimes asked to deliver.
“I enjoy interviewing families
and learning about their loved
ones. But it is easier to interview
the subject personally. After all,
who knows the story better
than the person who is the main
character?” he says. “Also,
while family members may have
an opinion on the most significant
aspects of their loved one’s
life, the person themselves may
have a different view.”
Most “Your Life’s Story” assignments
are completed with
3-4 days. They involve the
interview(s), writing, a review
of the draft script and, following
acceptance and approval,
the printing of a hard copy. Clients
are also given a copy of the
script in electronic form (memory
stick) so that it can be easily
added to at some later stage.
Dennis , who is able to travel
to meet clients at their own
home, can best be contacted by
email: trot@actrix.co.nz or by
phone, 021 900 028. Further
details can be found on www.
Seniors and pets
For those of us who have a much loved
pet and are holding back from moving to a
retirement village because of this or whose pet
has passed on and are wondering whether to
have another one this article may interest you.
JOKE CORNER
Fishing for Whiskey
There has been a great
deal of research done
world-wide on the health
benefits for elderly people
owning pets.
In 1992 a study was performed
in Cleveland Ohio
where a pet was given to elderly
people who were living
alone. The fees and food plus
neutering/spaying and veterinary
costs were initially paid by
the researchers and shelters.
The animals were adopted
from animal shelters and so
resulted in a double situation
of saving the pet from being
euthanised and companionship
for the elderly person. This
resulted in a remarkable reduction
in health problems and so
less doctor’s visits, lower medication
and improved health.
There are now 46 animal
shelters in 27 states in the
USA participating in this programme.
It is called ‘Pets for
the Elderly Foundation’ and is
a charitable organisation which
relies totally on donations.
A three year study by the
Baker Medical Research Institute
in Melbourne Australia of
5741 people showed that pet
owners had lower blood pressure
and triglyceride and cholesterol
levels than did non pet
owners. The researchers tried
to find other factors like diet,
weight or social factors that
“Poor Old Fool” thought the well-dressed
gentlemen as he watched an old man fishing
in a puddle outside a pub. So he invited the
old man inside for a drink. As they sipped their
whiskeys, the gentleman thought he’d humour
the old man and asked, “So how many have you
caught today?”
The old man replied “ you’re the eighth.”
was not so.
Also Dr Roger Lavelle, Vet.
pet owners have significantly
Many retirement villages
now allow a pet with the owners.
The companionship and
social illnesses and results in
less visits to the doctor that often
only relate to loneliness.
Are you having problems
with your vision?
There are many causes of vision loss, and conditions of the eye
such as Cataract and Glaucoma, that we can diagnose and treat.
One specific disease called Macular Degeneration causes progressive
loss of vision in the centre of your visual field but leaving your
peripheral or side vision intact.
It is the leading cause of legal blindness and severe vision loss in New Zealand
(It does not result in total or ‘black’ blindness). One in seven New Zealanders
over the age of 50 years are affected. Smokers are three times more likely to
develop the disease and at least a decade earlier than non-smokers. People
with a family history of macular degeneration have a 50% chance
of developing the disease.
Symptoms may include
Difficulty with reading or any other activity that requires fine vision
Everything looks blurred or distorted
Distinguishing faces becomes difficult
Dark patches or empty spaces in the centre of your vision
Families and friends
can reduce the risk
of elderly people
being abused
Super Senior Patron Sir Peter Snell is asking
New Zealanders to look out for signs of elder
abuse, and to act on any concerns.
It’s estimated that up to
70,000 people will experience
some form of elder
abuse this year but most cases
go unreported.
The high-profile examples of
elder abuse in the media show
that some seniors are physically
and emotionally unable to free
themselves from abuse.
You can help put a stop to it.
Elder abuse can be, financial,
psychological, physical or sexual
- or some mixture of these.
More than three quarters of
abusers are family members.
Sons and daughters are the
most frequent perpetrators of
elder abuse – often feeling they
have a sense of entitlement.
An older person is more
at risk of abuse if they are dependent
on the perpetrator or
if the perpetrator suffers from
depression or alcohol and drug
dependency.
Another warning sign is social
isolation. Caregivers, family
members and victims may
avoid contact with others out of
shame or fear of discovery.
If you're worried that someone
is experiencing elder abuse,
it’s OK to help.
Something as simple as asking
how they are can make a
real difference.
The sooner you reach out,
the sooner they can get help.
You can ask:
• Are you OK?
• Do you want to talk?
• Is someone hurting you
• Is there anything I can do?
If you’re concerned about
how someone is being treated
you can call a free and confidential
elder abuse helpline that
has translation services. 0800
32 668 65 (0800 EA NOT OK)
Calls are answered by registered
nurses who can provide
information and advice on elder
abuse. They are also able to direct
you to local organisations
that are trained to help and
protect seniors.
Examples of elder abuse:
Helen’s story- financial abuse
Helen is an 80-year-old
woman with a chronic illness
and poor mobility. Her son, Peter
moved in to be Helen ’s carer
after his marriage broke down.
Peter does the shopping using
Helen’s ATM card and never
shows her the receipts when
she asks. There are unpaid bills
piled on the table and Helen
tells you she can’t afford to go
out any more.
Mary’s story - psychological
abuse
Mary is an 83-year-old woman
recently diagnosed with
depression. Mary lives with her
husband John. Their daughter
Frances notices that her father
is very controlling, puts her
mother down and refuses to
take Mary to church despite her
asking repeatedly. There is a history
of family violence.
Ted’s story – physical abuse
Ted is a 79-year-old man
who has been diagnosed with
dementia and other chronic illnesses.
He lives in social housing
with his son Brian who is
his carer and has Power of Attorney.
Brian has cancelled Ted’s
age-care services. Ted’s clothes
are soiled and dirty and he appears
to have lost weight.
