FLAME OF THE WEST WEST of ENGLAND FINALS WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON 16 Swindon St George beat Oxford Cavaliers 36- 18 in the West of England Grand Final at the Portway Rugby Development Centre, Bristol thanks to a try and six goals by man of the match Connor Tomley. A Charles Burnett try gave Swindon an early lead but the Cavaliers responded through Freddie Myatt and Ross Lewis to lead 10-6. Though Myatt scored his second of the game for the Cavaliers, Grieg O’Brien went over for Swindon’s sixth try after good work from Tomley to earn St George their first title from their fourth Grand Final in seven years. Swindon St George were unable to make it an historic double as their A team went down 42-10 to Gloucestershire Warriors in the Plate Final prior to their title triumph. St George went in front through a Declan Labrosse try converted by Matthew Moulton but the Warriors built a 20-6 lead at the interval with tries from Darren Collier, Matt Jones, Josh Llewelyn and Jake Thompson and two Ash Lewis goals. Ollie Cooper extended the lead early in the second half before Dan Bown scored a sensational length of the field try. However, that was all they could muster as the Warriors finished with tries from Ryan Tanner, Dean Cooper, who added a couple of goals, and man of the match Lewis who added his third goal of the game to seal the Warriors’ first silverware since 2014. HIGHLIGHTS: Click here to watch YouTube highlights SWINDON St George head coach Ben Whincup had tasted West of England Grand Final glory as a player for Gloucestershire Warriors in 2011 and three years later as a coach of the club. Ironically, both of those wins were against his current charges Swindon St George. So he was a proud man after his club’s first team earned their first silverware in their fourth West of England Grand Final. St George, who had only lost one game in the regular season were dominant almost throughout their 36-18 win over last season’s Plate winners Oxford. Having missed out at the same stage last year, Whincup was delighted to see the club win some silverware for the first time in 10 years. “It was the best weekend of the year, the game went well and it pretty much all went to plan,” he told the Swindon Advertiser. “We controlled it throughout the 80 minutes. “It was a very complete performance and it’s fantastic we pulled out that performance in that kind of game. “We have been playing that well all season so we just kind of got on with it. We played the same way and nothing really changed. “It was great to see the club lift a trophy. I think it has been 10 years and we have never won anything. “So it was nice to see all the hard work that people have been putting in to the club over the years slowly get rewarded.” Whincup was pleased with the consistency in performance shown by his players, and says that was the main reason his team made it to the final. “We have only lost one game all season and that is down to us being able to put out a consistent side,” added Whincup. “Last year we reached the Grand Final and lost so I was hoping to reach this stage again, but I didn’t think it would be in the manner that we have done it. 17 “With the results that we put in over the season I didn’t think we would do it this convincingly to be fair.
