MITCHELL’S
THE MAN
ALL GOLDS 30 – 28 BEARS
SATURDAY 12 AUGUST 2017
PRINCE OF WALES STADIUM
Trailing 28-12 with 15 minutes remaining, the All
Golds were in a hole. The Bears were looking at
a second consecutive win in Cheltenham but
Jack Mitchell stepped up to cross for a try five
minutes from the hooter and add the decisive
goal from the touchline.
It took almost 20 minutes for the first score to
arrive and Matthew Reid powered over from
close range. Brad Delaney added the extras.
Paul Emanuelli then made it 10-0 with a length
of the field interception before Chris Barratt
crossed with Delaney adding the extras for 16-0.
The All Golds were enjoying plenty of possession
but they lacked the killer instinct in attack.
Five minutes into the second half, Steve Parry
got the All Golds on the board but the Bears
responded immediately through Michael Russell
to keep their three score advantage.
Parry then set up Harry Kidd but again they lost
the momentum straight away when Hayden
Freeman touched down and the Bears looked
on course for their first win on the road this
season.
Then came the comeback. Parry burrowed
over from dummy half for his second try of the
game then just three minutes later Joe McClean
touched down. Mitchell converted both scores
as the home side moved within four points of
the Bears.
Then Mitchell stepped up. He ran a great line to
touch down in the corner and converted from
the narrowest of angles for good measure.
Amazingly, the Bears were given two chances to
snatch a draw in the final few minutes. Delaney
put an inviting penalty wide before the Bears got
a second chance but chose to run what would
have been a straightforward two points and
came up empty.
