WELCOME TO
THE ALL GOLD
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
4
If the rumours are to be
believed, this meeting of
the All Golds and Oxford
will be the last between the
clubs who will be merging
and playing in Bristol next
season.
Hopefully we’ll have some
more news by the time the
All Golds take on Hemel
Stags in a couple of weeks
but in the meantime, let
us savour this local derby
and pay tribute to the
hard work from all those
connected with both clubs
who have established the
game in their respective
areas.
There have been a number
of players who have played
for both clubs and many
who have graced the
Community game and we
pay tribute to their efforts
as well.
With both sides having
enjoyed a week’s break
thanks to the Ladbrokes
Challenge Cup Final last
week, the players should
be fresh – well as fresh
as you can be after six
months of hard slog – and
looking forward to getting
stuck in, so we should be in
for a no holds barred derby
to remember.
At this time of the year, the
medals are being handed
out and it is congratulations
to Castleford Tigers who
have deservedly won the
League Leaders Shield
having put in a string of
scintillating performances
this summer.
Also congratulations go to
Hull FC who are well and
truly at home at Wembley
having retained the
Challenge Cup with a hard
fought win over Wigan,
who of course won the
World Club Challenge way
back in February.
In the West of England,
it is congratulations to
Swindon St George who
won their first League title
with a win over Oxford.
There is a report and a link
to highlights of the game
elsewhere in this issue.
However, their second
team were unable to do
a remarkable double as
they were defeated by the
Gloucestershire Warriors in
the Plate Final.
So, can the All Golds get
their own silverware? Well,
they need to win today
and defeat the Skolars next
week as well as overcoming
the Stags in a fortnight and
perhaps hope a couple of
results go their way as well.
They can do it and I’m sure
Lee Greenwood will be
aiming to guide the boys
to success.
On to this issue of the
All Gold. We have a neat
story of the origins of
rugby league from George
Cowburn, coverage of the
West of England Finals
and a look towards the
new-look Harry Jepson
Trophy as well as the
usual previews for today’s
game and a look at our
opponents.
As always, it’s thanks to
George, to Patrick Baines
and to Jack Conlon for
their contributions and to
Craig Mitchell of Craig Paul
Design for stitching it all
together – hope you had a
good holiday, Craig!
And it’s thanks to you for
reading and for supporting
the All Golds and the great
game of rugby league.
THERE’S NO SUCH GAME AS RUGBY
(IT’S A PLACE IN WARWICKSHIRE)
WRITTEN BY GEORGE COWBURN
6
What the All Golds have been playing for the
last five seasons is Rugby (Football) League.
Add two flank forwards and it becomes Rugby
(Football) Union.
So how come there are two similar sports with
the same pitches, goalposts and oval shaped
balls run by two separate and completely
different organisations?
Put at its most simplistic it all boils down to
six shillings - thirty pence to anyone born after
15th February 1971. But there’s more to it than
that.
“Football” as an unregulated free-for-all, often
played by a whole village on public holidays,
existed in this country from medieval times
but it was the public schools, particularly
Rugby, and the Universities that created a
relatively disciplined game from these early
knockabouts.
Incidentally, the legend that William Webb
Ellis in some way invented the game of rugby
is a complete myth which surfaced long after
Webb Ellis’s death.
The Old Rugbeians Society (ex pupils of
the school) examined the claim, including
interviewing surviving old boys from the
period, and could find no concrete evidence to
back the claim up from any source.
It didn’t stop them deciding it was probably
true, however, in a classic example of wishful
thinking.
The early rules of “football” at Rugby school
included being able to catch the ball on the full
and kick it back out of your hands as gradually,
the game emerged into something akin to the
game of Rugby Union now played.
During Victorian times, the game began to
spread from the schools and universities
propelled in part by a piece of Parliamentary
legislation. The 1850 Factory Act decreed
that work had to cease by no later than 2pm
on Saturday afternoon; so what better way
for the miner, docker, foundryman or factory
labourer to spend his Saturday afternoon than
in a game of rugby?
By 1871 the RFU was formed to run the game
based then, as now, at Twickenham - a source
of annoyance to clubs in the north who found
travel to London to attend meetings and
influence matters very difficult.
County Cup competitions began in the 1870s
and, in the north in particular, became very
popular, drawing large crowds for the matches.
Naturally, ambitious clubs wanted the best
players and were prepared to pay for their
services enticing them from other clubs with
cushy job offers and/or cash payments - a
useful source of income in those hard times.
This change from the original social and
amateur ethos alarmed the RFU and its allies
and at the 1886 AGM of the RFU all payments
to players were outlawed - the game was to be
purely amateur.
Generally speaking, the northern clubs (and
some in other areas - the Gloucester club
itself was found in breach of regulations in the
1890s) ignored this rule and rumours regarding
payments were
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
ife. As competitions grew
and clubs had to travel further,
they needed their players to
take Saturday mornings off
work.
Even if they could get the time
off, most players could not
afford to lose their Saturday
pay and to get round this
the clubs would make “off
the record” payments to
compensate.
In Yorkshire a campaign by
the Reverend Frank Marshall
to expose the ‘evils of
professionalism’, as he saw it,
led to clubs and players being
suspended (some players
were even banned for life)
and the game was thrown into
chaos.
Fearful of a split, Yorkshire RFU
official James Miller proposed
at the 1893 RFU AGM that
clubs be allowed to make a
“broken time” payment of no
more than six shillings (30p)
to compensate players who
lost earnings.
The resolution was defeated
by 282 votes to 136. The RFU
secretary had 120 proxy votes
at his disposal - no prizes for
guessing which way he voted.
A split was becoming
inevitable as the northern clubs
also wanted a greater say in
the running of their affairs. In a
deliberately provocative move
the RFU later decreed that
all clubs or players accused
of professionalism would
now be automatically found
guilty unless they could prove
their innocence. Once the
Lancashire RFU became as
enthusiastic as their Yorkshire
counterparts in pursuit of
professionalism the die was
cast.
Having had separate meetings
previously, delegates from 22
Yorkshire and Lancashire clubs
met on 29th August 1895 at the
George Hotel in Huddersfield
- chosen as a halfway point
between the eastern and
western extremities of Hull
and Widnes and opposite
the town’s railway station.
There they voted to form a
Northern Rugby Football
Union, playing under existing
laws but allowing broken time
payments of six shillings to
players.
The rebels were joined by
two Cheshire clubs who also
resigned from the RFU and
the first games were played
just over a week later. The
Northern Union was up and
running!
Over the next dozen seasons
many of the differences
between the two codes
emerged as the northern
union sought to make their
game more attractive to
paying spectators.
Lineouts were abolished (in
1897), full professionalism
allowed (1898), the points
system changed (1905) and
in 1906, the play the ball
rule introduced and teams
reduced to thirteen a side
with the loss of the two flank
forwards.
Fearful of further losses, the
rugby union authorities tried
to kill off the new organisation.
They were justified in their fears
as it was to be fifteen years
after the split before England
won the Home international
Championship again. The new
game prospered, albeit mainly
contained within its northern
heartlands.
7
One hundred and twenty
three years later we are still
playing two separate games
of rugby (football). Dewsbury
vs Manningham 1901 -
ALL GOLDS vs. OXFORD
MATCH PREVIEW
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
The All Golds play their penultimate home
game of the season on Sunday against
Oxford.
With the chance of finishing in the Shield
final all but over Lee Greenwood says he
wants to see his players bounce back from
the 32-18 defeat at Hunslet a fortnight
ago. He said: “We were disappointed with
the game at Hunslet and we want to put
things right against Oxford. We were
leading at half time but in the second
half we weren’t good enough and Hunslet
punished us. It’s another tough game for
us against Oxford and we’ll need to be at
our best to win.
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
good, close games against them and we’re
looking forward to another on Sunday.
“It’s important we turn up and show
the right attitude. We want to finish the
season strongly so Sunday is important
for us. We’ve had more wins this season
than any other and we’ve got three more
games to add to the tally.”
9
Full back Alex Gaskell returns to the
squad and could be in line for his first
appearance since the game out in Toronto.
Props Richard Jones and Ross Price could
also return having missed the game
against Hunslet. Scotland international
Joe McClean misses out for the first time
this season.
“We beat Oxford 38-10 earlier in the
season but the game was close up until
the 65 minute mark. They’ve had some
good wins this season so we know they
can be a threat. Obviously they’ve had
a tough run of late but we know games
against southern teams are always close.
In my three years here we’ve had some
Oxford, who caught the eye early in the
season with impressive wins over York
and Hunslet, are enduring a nightmare
run of form and haven’t won a game since
their 38-18 win over South Wales on May
20. They opened their League 1 Shield
campaign with a narrow 32-26 defeat at
Hemel before going down 36-10 on home
soil to Hunslet. They were demolished
66-0 by London Skolars the weekend
after but did manage to avoid defeat
last time out when they drew 22-22 with
South Wales Ironmen,
TODAY’S OPPONENTS
OXFORD
WRITTEN BY JACK CONLON
12
FORM
Oxford come into Sunday’s game on the
back of a run of just one draw in their last
dozen matches. Their early season wins
over York and Hunslet must be a distant
memory for Tim Rumford’s men as they
have endured a horror run. Worryingly
for the All Golds, however, Oxford are
due a win, as the sides generally split the
victories each season. Defence seems to
be the main issue at the minute, with a
number of their defeats being by 31 points
or more, the worst of those being a 66-0
trouncing by London Skolars. Rumford’s
side currently sit in 5th place in the League
1 Shield table and while they cannot catch
the All Golds in fourth, a win would keep
them ahead of the Bears, Stags and
Ironmen.
BACKS
Oxford’s halves have been their main
source of chances this year, with Tim
Rumford able to tie down a consistent
and settled combination in the creative
positions. Oxford’s spine this year has
mainly been made up of Scott Fleming
and Bradford Academy graduate Callum
Windley in the halves, with centre-turnedfullback
Kane Riley offering himself as
an extra option. With great ball players
feeding them, the Oxford outside backs
have flourished, with experienced finishers
Josh Atkinson and Jordan Gill picking up
plenty of tries, aided by the likes of Harvey
Burnett, Will Cooke and Marcus Brooker
on their inside.
FORWARDS
Former All Gold Casey Canterbury is the
one mainstay in a very changeable pack.
Like in the rest of his squad, Tim Rumford
has plenty of depth in the forwards and
is bolstered by having the likes of Jordan
Crowther, Lewis Bienek and Callum Bustin
on dual-registration from Wakefield and
London Broncos respectively. Young
Bronco Dan Hindmarsh and Trinity
rookie Bradley Moules have also been
given a good opportunity at Iffley Road
this season and have both been regular
features in the squad.
Former London Skolars prop Anthony
Cox has been a key feature in the side
since joining in the off-season, his size and
strength mixing well with that of Stuart
Biscomb, Jake Joynt and Jordan Siddons.
Mid-season signing Jonny Payne has also
been a welcome addition to the forward
pack, after spending some time out of the
professional game following stints with
the Castleford Academy and Newcastle
back in 2011.
ONE TO WATCH
Oxford have a plethora of talent in the
outside backs, but former London Broncos
centre Harvey Burnett adds a wealth of
experience and skill. Still only 21-years-of-
STAR MAN
While he may not be the most experienced,
hooker Casey Canterbury is certainly one of
Oxford’s most influential players and has become
a key part of their side this season. The former
Castleford Academy and Hunslet rake will be
a familiar face to All Golds fans, having spent
a period on loan at the Golden Fern in 2014. He
spent almost a full year out of the professional
game in 2015, playing just one game for York
City Knights, before moving back down south to
Oxford at the start of 2016 where his game has
gone from strength to strength.
A deceptive and quick dummy half, Canterbury
has enjoyed a fruitful 2017 campaign so and
establishing himself as one of the best hookers
in League 1. His pace out of the ruck combined
with his smart decision making make him a
nightmare to defend against and with the likes of
Callum Windley, Scott Fleming and Josh Kittrick
playing off his back, this Oxford side have a very
dangerous and creative spine.
age, Burnett is now in his third full season in
League 1, having come into the competition
as an 18-year-old at London Skolars, on loan
from London Broncos. After finishing 2015
playing Rugby Union, he switched back to
League and signed for Oxford, where he has
come on in leaps and bounds. He can play
in either the three-quarters or as a secondrower,
with his athletic frame allowing him
to be effective in either position, while he is
also an accomplished goalkicker. At such a
young age he’s still got plenty in his game to
improve, but with more experience, Burnett
could become one of League 1’s biggest
talents.
MITCHELL’S
THE MAN
ALL GOLDS 30 – 28 BEARS
SATURDAY 12 AUGUST 2017
PRINCE OF WALES STADIUM
Trailing 28-12 with 15 minutes remaining, the All
Golds were in a hole. The Bears were looking at
a second consecutive win in Cheltenham but
Jack Mitchell stepped up to cross for a try five
minutes from the hooter and add the decisive
goal from the touchline.
It took almost 20 minutes for the first score to
arrive and Matthew Reid powered over from
close range. Brad Delaney added the extras.
Paul Emanuelli then made it 10-0 with a length
of the field interception before Chris Barratt
crossed with Delaney adding the extras for 16-0.
The All Golds were enjoying plenty of possession
but they lacked the killer instinct in attack.
Five minutes into the second half, Steve Parry
got the All Golds on the board but the Bears
responded immediately through Michael Russell
to keep their three score advantage.
Parry then set up Harry Kidd but again they lost
the momentum straight away when Hayden
Freeman touched down and the Bears looked
on course for their first win on the road this
season.
Then came the comeback. Parry burrowed
over from dummy half for his second try of the
game then just three minutes later Joe McClean
touched down. Mitchell converted both scores
as the home side moved within four points of
the Bears.
Then Mitchell stepped up. He ran a great line to
touch down in the corner and converted from
the narrowest of angles for good measure.
Amazingly, the Bears were given two chances to
snatch a draw in the final few minutes. Delaney
put an inviting penalty wide before the Bears got
a second chance but chose to run what would
have been a straightforward two points and
came up empty.
HUNSLET
TOO GOOD
HUNSLET 32 – 18 ALL GOLDS
SATURDAY 19 AUGUST 2017
SOUTH LEEDS STADIUM
Three tries by full back Jimmy Watson in twelve
devastating minutes midway through the
second half secured two vital points for Hunslet
in their quest for a place in the League 1 Shield
Final.
They had made an indifferent start to the game
allowing the All Golds to open the scoring
through former Hunslet favourite Mo Agoro,
but cancelled that out with two tries from Joe
Sanderson who also added four goals.
Joe McClean responded for the All Golds who
took a narrow 12-10 lead into the interval thanks
to a penalty from inside his own half by Ben
Stead one of his three successful attempts at
goal.
However, even with captain George Flanagan in
the sin-bin for dissent, Hunslet created space for
Dean Roberts to score three minutes into the
second half to edge into a lead they never lost.
Flanagan’s returned heralded Watson’s solo blitz
as he crossed on 50, 59 and 62 minutes before
the All Golds recovered to have the better of the
final 15 minutes, though Steve Parry’s 22nd try of
the season was only a consolation effort.
FLAME OF THE WEST
WEST of ENGLAND FINALS
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
16
Swindon St George beat Oxford Cavaliers 36-
18 in the West of England Grand Final at the
Portway Rugby Development Centre, Bristol
thanks to a try and six goals by man of the
match Connor Tomley.
A Charles Burnett try gave Swindon an early
lead but the Cavaliers responded through
Freddie Myatt and Ross Lewis to lead 10-6.
Though Myatt scored his second of the game
for the Cavaliers, Grieg O’Brien went over for
Swindon’s sixth try after good work from
Tomley to earn St George their first title from
their fourth Grand Final in seven years.
highlights
Andreas Bonicelli’s try edged Swindon in
front again but Harry Gillett powered over to
give the Cavaliers a 14-12 advantage.
However, Ben Bridson scored to put Swindon
18-14 ahead at the interval before tries from
Tomley and his halfback partner Tommy
White took St George out to a three score
lead.
Swindon St George were
unable to make it an
historic double as their A
team went down 42-10 to
Gloucestershire Warriors in
the Plate Final prior to their
title triumph.
St George went in front
through a Declan Labrosse
try converted by Matthew
Moulton but the Warriors
built a 20-6 lead at the
interval with tries from
Darren Collier, Matt Jones,
Josh Llewelyn and Jake
Thompson and two Ash
Lewis goals.
Ollie Cooper extended the
lead early in the second half
before Dan Bown scored
a sensational length of the
field try.
However, that was all they
could muster as the Warriors
finished with tries from Ryan
Tanner, Dean Cooper, who
added a couple of goals, and
man of the match Lewis who
added his third goal of the
game to seal the Warriors’
first silverware since 2014.
SWINDON St George head
coach Ben Whincup had
tasted West of England
Grand Final glory as a player
for Gloucestershire Warriors
in 2011 and three years
later as a coach of the club.
Ironically, both of those wins
were against his current
charges Swindon St George.
So he was a proud man after
his club’s first team earned
their first silverware in their
fourth West of England
Grand Final.
St George, who had only
lost one game in the regular
season were dominant
almost throughout their
36-18 win over last season’s
Plate winners Oxford.
Having missed out at
the same stage last year,
Whincup was delighted
to see the club win some
silverware for the first time
in 10 years.
“It was the best weekend
of the year, the game went
well and it pretty much all
went to plan,” he told the
Swindon Advertiser.
“We controlled it throughout
the 80 minutes.
“It was a very complete
performance and it’s
fantastic we pulled out that
performance in that kind of
game.
“We have been playing that
well all season so we just
kind of got on with it. We
played the same way and
nothing really changed.
“It was great to see the club
lift a trophy. I think it has
been 10 years and we have
never won anything.
“So it was nice to see all the
hard work that people have
been putting in to the club
over the years slowly get
rewarded.”
Whincup was pleased
with the consistency in
performance shown by his
players, and says that was
the main reason his team
made it to the final.
“We have only lost one
game all season and that
is down to us being able to
put out a consistent side,”
added Whincup.
“Last year we reached the
Grand Final and lost so I was
hoping to reach this stage
again, but I didn’t think it
would be in the manner that
we have done it.
17
“With the results that we put
in over the season I didn’t
think we would do it this
convincingly to be fair.
Swindon St George A v Gloucester Warriors
“It showed real
professionalism from
the players to still play in
that kind of occasion and
pressure, then play so well.”
WEST OF ENGLAND LIONHEARTS
EXCITING NEW FORMAT
FOR HARRY JEPSON TROPHY
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
in the Harry Jepson regional
competition.
“Planning for this competition
started during pre-season when
club coaches were asked to
nominate the top three players
from each league fixture which
helped to inform invites.
18
For the first time, this year’s
Harry Jepson Trophy will be
contested by four regional
representative teams. The
West of England, Midlands,
East, and London & South East
representative teams have been
undertaking selection trials as
their regular season draws to
a conclusion for the Trophy
clashes, which are due to start
at the beginning of September.
The Trophy is named in
recognition of one of the
sport’s greatest administrators
and a passionate expansionist,
Harry Jepson MBE, who passed
away a year ago. Each region
will play the other once and
the top two will then contest
the final at Hemel Stags on
Sunday, 24 September (kick
off, 2pm). “I had the privilege
of participating in the Harry
Jepson Trophy with Wests
Warriors last year, and am very
excited to be part of the brand
new structure this year,” said
Shun Tamura, senior manager of
the London & South East side. “I
was thrilled to see not only the
top clubs competing in London
Premier coming forward, but a
lot of Merit League players and
staff putting their hand up to be
part of it too.
“We have had a healthy amount
of player nominations and I am
very excited to see how the
squad shapes up over the next
couple of weeks. Tamura added:
“The intention is to showcase
how much London has to offer
in terms of the calibre of Rugby
League played in the region
and the passion our players
have for the sport.
“This is the first time in my
experience that London clubs
have come together in this form
and there have already been
very positive conversations
and discussions among the
management group.” Chris
Chatten, Chairman of the West
of England Representative
programme, added: “We are
excited to be participating
“The regional squad have
now had two training sessions
together with around 80 players
taking part.” Dave Raybould,
competition manager at the
Rugby Football League, noted:
“There is a real appetite for
regional representative Rugby
League in England and the
2017 Harry Jepson trophy is
seen as an ideal opportunity to
showcase it.
“Preparations have begun
in earnest for what should
be an exciting climax to the
community season in these
regions.”
The format was effectively
launched in 2016 by West of
England club administrators
Will Brewer (Oxford Cavaliers),
Glenn Tyreman (Southampton
Spitfires) and Chris Chatten
(Bath).
Chatten, who is now chairman
of the programme, said: “Last
year was all about getting a
relatively large pool of players
an opportunity to play at a
higher level and then go on tour.
“During warm-up fixtures in 2016, the West
of England regional side played the East
representative side, a Wales President’s XIII
and the South Wales Ironmen (then the
Scorpions) development side, but it was all
building towards tour success when we went
to Ireland and beat Ireland Under 19s in a close
encounter Ashbourne RFC.”
This season, preparations for the Trophy
competition culminated in a trial match
between teams representing the West of the
region and the East of the region at Oxford
RFC.
The East side won an entertaining and wellcontested
game 48-22 thanks to a dominant
second half performance.
From that game, a squad for the opening
Harry Jepson Trophy game against London
was chosen. The match will be played at
Oxford RFC on Saturday 2 September, kick
off 1pm
LEWIS REECE: WORLD CUP
SELECTION WOULD BE A
DREAM COME TRUE
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
20
LEWIS REECE SAYS HE’S WORKING AS HARD
AS HE CAN TO BOOK A PLACE IN THE WALES
SQUAD AT THIS YEAR’S WORLD CUP.
After being named in the 38 man train-on
squad, along with his All Golds team mates
Steven Parry and Courtney Davies, Reece
says he’ll do everything he can to book a
place on the plane to Australia. He said:
“There’s nothing better than playing for
your country, I’ve been lucky enough to play
seven times for Wales and I’ve loved every
minute. I’m a proud Welshman so to get the
chance to play in a World Cup would mean
everything to me. We’ve got a very strong
squad so competition for places is going to
be tough. All I can concentrate on is playing
well and fingers crossed I make it.
Reece, who played his 100th professional
game in the 32-18 loss at Hunslet last week,
says the decision to re-join the All Golds
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
21
was the right one. “I’ve really
enjoyed being back at the
club. For me the main thing
is that I get on so well with
everyone – the players and
the staff, I’ve become good
friends with a lot of them. A
lot of the players have been
here a few seasons now and
we all know each other.
“We’ve had some really
good wins this season. We
had a good shot at getting
inside the top eight which
for a club as young as ours
was some achievement. My
favourite game this season
was the 36-28 win over
North Wales Crusaders.
It was a real close game
against a good side and
personally I had one of my
best games, scoring two
tries. The second try came
when we were winning by
just two points with a few
minutes left so it was a really
important one. We all got
together after the game
and had a good night. It was
great to be back with the
boys.”
Despite being on the wrong
end of a 62-10 scoreline
Reece says the game in
Toronto last month was
one of the highlights of the
season. Playing the full 80
minutes against full-time
opposition Reece capped
off a fine performance with
the try of the game. “It was a
great trip, not just the game
but seeing a bit of Canada
as well. We all had a great
time, it was a real thrill to
test yourself in front of a
big crowd against some big
name players.
“The great thing about
our sport is that it gives
you an opportunity to visit
other countries. I’ve had
some great experiences
all through playing rugby
league. Toronto was
an amazing city and I’ll
remember the game fondly.
To score a try was great but
I have to give all the credit to
Joe McClean who did all the
hard work with that break
through the middle. All I
had to do was keep up with
him and Luke Stephens who
gave me a great pass.”
