profit-building opportunities as demand 

for batteries takes off and even the least 

technically-savvy drivers realise their car 

might need new anti-freeze/coolant, or a new 

set of wiper blades. 

So, are you geared up? We take a look at 

a variety of winter-associated areas that you 

should be looking, and why you should be 

encouraging your customers to be looking 

ahead too. 

We also take a look at what’s going on in 

the world of oils and lubricants. There’s no 

getting away from just how complicated the 

oils segment has become, and the trend 

continues as we see more VM-specific types 

being specified. For any all-makes workshop 

it’s a messy situation, because while it’s 

tempting to go for what oil’s available, does 

it really meet the demands required by that

Used car sales dip for second quarter 

UK used car transactions declined 

in the second quarter 

of 2017, according to figures 

released today by the Society 

of Motor Manufacturers and 

Traders (SMMT). 1,832,400 

used cars changed hands in 

the period, a fall of -13.5%, 

on the back of a record 2016 

and turbulence in the new 

car market following changes 

to VED rates on new cars introduced 

on 1 April. 

Superminis remained the 

most popular used vehicle 

type in Q2, with more than 

600,000 buyers accounting 

for a third (32.7%) of the 

market, followed by small 

family cars, with almost half 

a million changing hands. 

Minis and SUVs were the 

only two segments to show 

growth – up 5.7% and 3.5% 

respectively, echoing the 

trend in the new car market. 

Meanwhile, black took top 

position as most popular colour 

for used cars, chosen by 

a fifth (21.0%) of motorists 

and knocking silver off the 

top spot after several years 

at number one. Cream, white 

and brown were the only colours 

to grow in popularity, 

up 18.2%, 10.6% and 5.4%. 

Figures for the first half 

of the year also showed a 

small decrease in demand to 

3,966,356 sales, -5.1% lower 

than the record levels seen 

in H1 2016 – again reflecting 

the trend in the new car 

market. 

In the first six months, 

demand for diesel cars remained 

strong, with some 

1,628,045 changing hands, 

a small -0.1% year-on-year 

decline. Meanwhile, petrol 

sales decreased -8.9% to 

2,291,328 units, while alternatively 

fuelled vehicles 

(AFVs) rose 24.2% with electric 

cars enjoying particularly 

strong growth – up 79.3%. 

However, volumes remain 

low with AFVs currently accounting 

for just 1.2% of the 

market.

DRIVERS fail to see 

that automated 

and driverless vehicles 

will deliver 

promised benefits 

according to a new study. 

When asked about what 

benefits will be delivered, 

the second most popular response 

was ‘none’ as more 

than a third of respondents 

could not identify any advantage 

that would follow future 

advances. 

In identifying their feelings 

about automotive technology 

the top six issues were negative 

like the wrong focus or 

conceding control. 

Motorists are three times 

as likely (44 per cent) to be 

scared of autonomous vehicles 

due to the loss of personal 

control than likely to 

see the positive opportunities. 

Researchers spoke with 

2,000 motorists for Continental 

Tyres, the leading tyre 

and technology manufacturer, 

as part of its Vision Zero, 

a commitment to reduce 

traffic fatalities worldwide. 

The top views about driverless 

cars are that people 

are becoming too lazy and 

reliant on technology (37 

per cent), and there are too 

many risks associated with 

technology like being hacked 

(36 per cent). 

Executive, said, “With used 

car sales closely mirroring 

what we see in the new car 

market, last quarter’s decline 

comes as no surprise – 

and with demand easing over 

recent months, this could offer 

motorists the opportunity 

to get some great deals. 

However, although the 

market remains at an exceptionally 

high level, given 

the softening we’ve seen in 

registrations of new cars in 

more recent months, looking 

ahead it is vital that government 

secures the conditions 

that will maintain consumer 

and business confidence if 

we are to see both markets 

continue to prosper.” 

DRIVERS EXPRESS 

CONCERNS OVER 

DRIVERLESS CARS 

Mark Griffiths, safety expert 

at Continental Tyres, 

said: “Drivers have to contend 

with immediate real 

world issues like congestion, 

the cost of motoring and environmental 

impact, and in 

some instances technologies 

being developed now are not 

being identified as a solution 

for those issues – yet they absolutely 

are. 

“Future advances will 

transform motoring and 

technology businesses like 

ours need to explain how 

present challenges will be 

reduced or eliminated – like 

congestion, costs and environmental 

impact. 

“The message from motorists 

is clear – talk less about 

‘tomorrow’s world’ and more 

about real world benefits.” 

When asked what issues 

should be prioritised by 

automotive and technology 

companies, half of road users 

agreed it should be improved 

road safety. 

This was followed by almost 

50 per cent of people 

saying more economical vehicles 

using existing and new 

fuels and 47 per cent saying 

less traffic on the roads. 

Mark Griffiths continued: 

“It is the job of automotive 

technology manufacturers, 

like Continental, to inform 

drivers the immediate and 

near future gains from the 

exciting work being done. 

In the past the benefits from 

some advances have been 

self-evident, such as tyre 

pressure monitoring systems 

or anti-lock brakes. 

“Road users today see 

safety as a top priority, and 

we strive to raise awareness 

about the importance of fundamental 

issues, such as 

tyre safety and tread depth.”

Garages posed for 10% 

MOT increase – but do 

they have the manpower?

NEXT month will 

bring the skills 

shortage across 

the automotive industry 

into sharper 

focus when garage owners 

across the country are faced 

with an increase in MOT 

tests by almost 10%. And 

concerns are being raised 

as to whether garages are 

equipped with the sufficient 

manpower to handle this 

surge in demand. 

The MOT rise is down 

to the unprecedented car 

sales boom of 2014, which 

reached an all-time decade 

high of 2.48 million. With 

400,000 of these cars purchased 

in September of that 

year for the new registration, 

under Government regulation 

these vehicles require a 

first MOT after three years, 

and this date is fast approaching. 

“Reports of continued 

growth within the industry 

have been gaining traction 

for some time,” explains 

Gavin White, MD of Autotech 

Recruit, the UK’s only specialist 

agency to supply temporary 

and permanent MOT 

testers and technicians. 

“However, the need to maintain 

and service the vehicles 

which originally sparked the 

sales boom is now starting, 

but garages do not have the 

manpower, or technicians 

sufficiently skilled to fix the

A report by the Automotive 

Council, which revealed that 

5,000 motor industry jobs 

were vacant in 2016, underpins 

the full scale of the 

problem. However, while this 

shortfall is largely down to 

the lack of new talent entering 

the industry, many garages 

do not realise that there 

is a ready supply of skilled 

technicians highly trained 

and proficient in MOT testing 

to cover unmanned bays 

during busy periods. 

“Improving workshop productivity 

is at the heart of our

cost a garage up to £2,000 

per day in lost revenue, and

Iconic Brooklands 

scoreboard unveiled 

The highlight of last weekend’s 

annual Brooklands Reunion 

event was the unveiling 

of a magnificent exact replica 

of the giant 12 metre scoreboard 

that stood proudly in 

the pre-war Brooklands Paddock. 

Funded by the Brooklands 

Trust Members and 

British luxury carmaker, Aston 

Martin, the scoreboard 

forms the centrepiece of the 

Brooklands Aircraft Factory 

& Race Track Revival Project. 

Brooklands, near Weybridge 

in Surrey, was the 

world’s first purpose-built 

motor racing circuit, opening 

on 17 June 1907 and 

serving as a great sporting 

arena and a high-speed test 

track for the fledgling motor 

industry. The circuit hosted 

the first British Grand Prix 

in 1926 and became one of 

the most popular social destinations 

for high society in 

1920s and 1930s Britain. 

The last race was held in 

August 1939 before the outbreak 

of World War II. 

Now a major aviation 

and motoring museum, the 

Brooklands Aircraft Factory 

& Race Track Revival Project 

is seeking to restore many 

parts of Brooklands to its 

magical heyday, something 

that Aston Martin was proud 

to support. 

Aston Martin President 

and CEO, Dr Andy Palmer 

said: “We were delighted to 

support the restoration of 

the iconic Brooklands Scoreboard 

as a tribute to the 

Aston Martins and Lagondas 

that saw great success 

at Brooklands in the 1920s 

and 1930s.” 

The original scoreboard 

was demolished after World 

War II so the design and 

mechanism of the new one 

has been created via painstaking 

research, which included 

the viewing of hundreds 

of photographs and 

hours of period racing film.

BOWMONK - an established 

name in your workshop for 

over a century now

is Norwich-based 

Bowmonk Tapley, whose 

portable brake testing 

equipment has been found 

in workshops up and down 

the country for over a century. 

The company’s roots can 

be traced back to its founders, 

a Mr Bowser, a Mr Monks 

and a Mr Whitehouse, who 

worked at the National Physical 

Laboratory in West London 

in the 1950’s. Whilst 

there they were approached 

by another gentleman, a Mr 

Tapley, who worked for the 

Department for Transport 

and had designed and patented 

a decelerometer in 

1910 but needed their help 

to gain approval for it. The 

so-called Tapley Meter had 

become the worldwide standard 

for measuring braking 

performance, so much so 

that brake tests in the USA 

were often referred to as “Tapley 

tests”. 

Bowser, Monks and Whitehouse 

believed they could 

create a better product, and 

created the Bowmonk Dynometer 

which enjoyed similar 

success to the Tapley 

Meter. In a twist of fate 2006 

saw Bowmonk buying Tapley 

Instrumentation, giving 

the East Anglian business a 

two-pronged attack into the 

brake-testing market. 

Today Bowmonk’s Brake- 

Check Series 2 is the marketleading 

electronic portable 

decelerometer, superseding 

the original mechanical 

models, and it offers a 

quick, reliable and easy-touse 

method of testing a vehicle’s 

braking efficiency. With 

cars and vans, it is placed in 

the front passenger footwell, 

and with the addition of a 

heavy-duty bracket it can 

be used to test both quad 

bikes and motorcycles. And 

by having its own battery it 

does not need plugging in to 

an external power source. 

“You simply place it in 

the vehicle, arm it and then

conduct the test,” says Bowmonk 

general manager David 

Hitchings. “The case is 

made from a high impact 

material which is very robust, 

and it will tell the user 

when it needs recalibrating 

every two years by showing 

a red light.” 

Being light, strong and 

compact the BrakeCheck 

has a long life expectancy, 

and when it’s time for recalibration 

Bowmonk offers a 

quick turnaround, all recalibration 

work being carried 

out at its Norwich base. 

With the all-important 

DVSA approval workshops 

know they are getting a product 

that is up to the job, and, 

Bowmonk Tapley has the 

lion’s share of the market. 

And to ensure workshops 

can get the most out of their 

purchase, Bowmonk offers 

training sessions. These 

last between an hour and an 

hour and a half and up to 10 

people can take part, Hitchings 

says. 

Put that down to its ease 

of use, the robust case or the 

company’s years of experi- 

ence that goes into Brake- 

Check, it’s hardly surprising 

workshops not only in the 

UK but all across the globe 

use them, while in emerging 

markets buyers sometimes 

choose the mechanical Tapley 

or Bowmonk alternatives. 

But as well as checking a 

car’s brakes – or by doing 

that – workshops can create 

an additional revenue 

stream, as Hitchings explains: 

“Workshops can offer 

their customers before and 

after test results to show the 

performance of car’s brakes 

and how they have been improved 

with, say, new discs 

and pads.” 

While BrakeCheck Series 

2 remains a big seller new 

products are on the way, 

with a new product in the 

pipeline making its debut 

by 2019. While he won’t be 

drawn on what that new 

product will offer, Hitchings 

is clearly upbeat about 

how it will strengthen Bowmonk’s 

already strong hand 

in workshops at home and 

abroad.

ALONGSIDE its BrakeCheck products, Tapley Meter 

and related accessories, Bowmonk’s airfield friction 

meter might, on the surface, seem a little out of the 

ordinary. 

But for anyone who flies, whether regularly or just to 

go on holiday, it’s a highly useful, safety-critical piece 

of kit that makes take-offs and landings safer. 

Comprised of a solid state accelerometer and 

crystal-controlled clock it measures the deceleration 

forces of the vehicle it is mounted in 400 times per 

second, with an accuracy of better than two percent, 

Bowmonk says. The results are used to assess the 

condition of the runway during winter conditions, 

to determine whether aircraft, which may be carrying 

hundreds of people, can land safely. Bowmonk’s 

AFM2 is the preferred runway friction tester of the 

US Air Force, and is approved by many leading 

authorities such as Transport Canada, the FAA, and 

the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau to name a few.

named as top cause 

for mot failures 

The number one cause for MOT failures were windscreen 

wiper and washer-related issues, according 

to new research by AA Garage Guide, the AA’s 

MOT, repairs and car servicing garage finder. 

Garage Guide analysed 146,000 MOT records of 

UK-registered vehicles owned by AA members in May and 

June this year, and found that problems with the suspension 

and registration plate bulbs also topped the list. 

In fact, eight of the 10 most common MOT failure points 

can be easily identified and resolved through some simple 

pre-MOT checks.

Across the country, more than four in 10 (44.3%) cars 

failed their last MOT test. 

Drivers in the seaside town of Great Yarmouth suffered 

the highest MOT failure rate in the whole country, 

with more than half (53.8%) failing their last MOT, while 

motorists in Weston-Super-Mare (52.6%) and Edinburgh 

(51.8%) also experienced worryingly high failure rates. 

The table shows the 10 towns and cities in the UK with 

the highest MOT failure rates (looking at the last MOT).

Olli Astley, director at AA Garage Guide, says: “There 

are countless numbers of potential reasons for vehicles 

failing their MOT, but it’s shocking to see that the 

number one cause identified came down to the humble 

windscreen wipers and washers. 

“An empty screen wash or smearing wipers are easy 

to spot – and fix – at home ahead of the statutory roadworthiness 

test, so there’s really no excuse for failing on 

such an easily solvable problem. 

“Tyres and headlights have also been highlighted as 

popular problem areas and are therefore worth checking 

in advance of your car’s MOT. Make sure that your tyre 

pressures are correct and that wear across the whole of 

the tyre surface isn’t below the 1.6mm legal minimum, 

and that any blown lights are replaced. 

“You should make sure you’ve addressed any previous 

‘advisories’ – that’s the maintenance work recommended 

by the garage during your car’s last MOT. If you’re unsure 

of your vehicle’s MOT history and advisories, you

Underlying issues causing starter motor 

failure must be investigated - not ignored 

Autoelectro, the UK’s largest independent rotating

technicians about burnt out starter motors and what 

to look out for when diagnosing the fault. 

It is an all too common 

issue for starter motors 

to burn out and fail in 

untimely circumstances. 

These incidents 

can happen within months, 

hours or even minutes of fitting, 

and it is often the starter 

motor that is assumed to 

be the problem. 

However, a simple replacement 

does not mean that the 

component will not fail again 

– there may be underlying issues

signs that show that a starter 

motor is burning out:

which can cause the starter 

motor to run in mesh and 

engage at the incorrect time. 

The faults lead the starter

the nose cone breaking. To 

rectify the origin of this failure, 

technicians must carry 

out component testing and 

replace the ignition switch 

and the wiring harness, if 

necessary.

addition, a 0W-30, has been added to meet 

Ford demands, and is suitable for the maker’s

Carlube is introducing three further 0W-20 

grades to meet Jaguar/Land Rover, Volvo and

emissions, including the oil 

used,” Brown says. 

“It’s a simple principle. 

OEMS want to use oils 

which have a lower viscosity 

which in turn reduces the 

internal energy losses within 

the engine. The energy loss 

of every lubricated component 

reduces because there 

is lower friction, the engine 

becomes more efficient, you 

use less fuel and the emissions 

come down. They also 

have to maintain the engine’s 

durability and reliability so 

formulations are becoming 

more complex as new additive 

technologies are required 

to facilitate this.” 

Potentially good news for 

the environment, but for 

workshops and factors it’s a 

stocking nightmare, and one 

that cannot be avoided. Once 

a 15W-40, 10W-40 and a gear 

oil would work with most 

cars passing through, but 

clearly times have changed. 

Says Brown: “10W-40 now 

covers only a small part of 

the new UK car parc. Ten 

years ago that was 80 per 

cent. We’ve gone through 

10W-40, 5W-40 and 5W-30 

and now Suzuki has just informed 

us that the Suzuki 

Splash will be using 0W-16, 

which will be the first time 

commercially that this grade 

has been used in this country.” 

Fuchs’ latest introductions 

are the Titan GT1 LL-12 FE 

SAE OW-30 for BMWs, and 

Titan GT1 Longlife IV SAE 

OW-20 for VAG cars. 

GT1 LL-12 is said to reduce 

CO2 emissions and 

offers fast circulation, and 

says Fuchs product manager 

Rosemary Mellor: “The formal 

approval demonstrates 

that this oil is perfect to be 

used in certain BMW engines 

and will ensure that the vehicle’s 

warranty is not put at 

risk by using the incorrect 

oil.” 

And talking about GT1 

Longlife she says: “All OEMs 

are now looking at new ways 

to keep emissions down to a 

minimum, while also saving 

fuel. Our challenge is to keep 

on top of that and produce 

premium oils that cover the 

vast majority of the country’s 

car parc.” 

Two-wheel 

clean-up 

Cataclean’s ‘One Shot’ Bike is now available in 

250ml bottles, in response to customers who said 

the 150ml bottles were too small. 

Aimed at four-stroke bikes, the British-made 

additive is designed to be used every 3000 miles 

to boost MPG, restore power and improve throttle 

response by cleaning injectors and reducing carbon 

build-up. 

But if more jaded technicians 

thought things couldn’t 

get any more complicated, 

the rise in hybrid, electric 

and LPG-converted will 

muddy the already dirty waters. 

Comma says hybrid-electric 

cars will see increased 

engine stress because stopstart 

systems lower the engine’s 

temperature. Because 

of that it’s important the 

correct, VM-specified oil is 

used. “Typically, most hybrid 

electric vehicles require 

a low viscosity product like 

Comma Pro-NRG 0W20,” 

Comma says.

Again, using the VM-specified

When winter unleashes 

its worst on cars across 

the country, how many 

of them are prepared 

for he cold-snap onslaught? 

But, equally importantly, how 

many workshops offered a winter service 

(or even a pre-winter checkover) for 

customers. 

As recent meteorological upsets have 

proved, not all winters are harsh. But 

when they are, many drivers haven’t 

made sure their cars are up to the job 

and their life goes on hold when the 

battery puts in its papers or the engine 

seizes up through a lack of anti-freeze. 

Cars are clearly more reliable and dependable 

than they used to be and they 

need little special attention merely for 

the harshest season, but that doesn’t 

excuse a battery that ideally needs replacing, 

wiper blades that should be 

changed or the cooling system draining 

and refilling with fresh coolant. 

Many pre-winter and winter service 

jobs are accomplished quickly and easily, 

and they provide a useful revenue 

stream in the pre- and post-Christmas 

period. 

Much winter driving is done when 

it’s dark, and it’s important that a car’s 

lights are working properly – not only to 

see, but be seen too. 

COOLANTS: 

The cold season calls for checks of a 

car’s coolant system, but it’s important 

to use the correct type, Comma says, 

while advising there are four types of 

coolant: silicate-based product; organic 

additive technology (OAT) product; 

silicate OAT-based product and nitratecontaining 

product. 

“When compared with commodity 

antifreeze/coolants, as well as lasting 

longer they also protect better and are 

designed to be more compatible with all 

the different metals, plastics and rubbers 

you find in a modern cooling system. 

However, these high performance 

products use different additive technologies 

to protect the cooling system 

from corrosion: Different manufacturers 

have different requirements,” Comma 

says. 

There are dangers in using universal 

products, Comma says. “Antifreeze 

products that are ‘silicate free’ are likely 

to be unsuitable for certain applications, 

such as the majority of BMW and 

Mercedes-Benz vehicles, as these manufacturers 

specify the use of a silicate 

based coolant. Volkswagen Audi Group 

(VAG) employ a unique antifreeze technology 

(Si-OAT), which combines the

correct coolant can lead to engine damage 

and, in extreme cases, failure. Over-heating 

and corrosion are the most likely results 

from using incorrect coolants, while 

water pumps might fail and engines seize. 

Using the incorrect type can lead to a void 

warranty, one supplier warns. 

“Due to the huge number of applications 

and the increasing move to manufacturer 

make-up is changing with

mix, and conventional baldes 

are mainly hailing from China. 

“Flat blades are where 

the market is and most garages 

are interested in that 

part – workshops will change 

blades in pairs, dealers singly.” 

“Cheap wiper blades are 

everywhere, and supermarkets 

might offer them as a 

loss leader,” Banks says. 

But are British drivers 

still bad at replacing blades? 

“We’re not so bad at changing 

them, and no worse than 

in other parts of Europe, but 

they might not be changed 

until absolutely necessary.”
