Five Things To Do
BEYOND THE
THE BEACHES
Enjoy the sunshine on 33 miles of serene beaches by daylight or take a
romantic moonlit walk while enjoying an evening’s tropical breeze. Melbourne’s
beaches are perfect for sunbathing, surfing, riding fat-tired bikes, or just a place
for your family to enjoy the sand and serenity with plenty of elbow room.
Collectively, Melbourne’s beaches include the beachside towns of Melbourne
Beach, Indialantic, Indian Harbour Beach, and Satellite Beach. Ocean Park
and Spessard Holland Beach Park are popular surf breaks and fishing spots
amoung surf fisherman. Many locals say that Juan Ponce de Leon (credited
with discovering Florida) actually landed first in Melbourne Beach before
moving north up the coast to St. Augustine. Stop at Ponce de Leon Park and
snap a selfie with the life-size statue there.
Florida’s Space Coast’s only state park is Sebastian Inlet State Recreation
Area. This park is south of Melbourne’s beaches and straddles the inlet with
access on both the north and south sides. It’s one of the most popular parks
in the entire state system because of the excellent fishing access and the
consistent surf break. The tidal pool is a great place for little ones to get in the
very calm waters protected by a rock jetty, and it’s not unusual to see manatees
and dolphins gliding by. The campground is on the south side along with a boat
ramp and the Sebastian Fishing Museum.
The first of May officially marks the beginning of sea turtle nesting season in
the state of Florida. The beaches along Melbourne’s coast are a prime spot for
observing sea turtles during nesting season and are the largest nesting area in
the United States for both loggerhead and green sea turtles.
Uber, ubiquitous in most cities by now, is
probably the easiest and most available way
of moving around for a day-long excursion.
This is a great way to get to places that are a
little extra distance from the actual port itself,
such as the Kennedy Space Center.
Ship to Shore Fun is a local company for
those with additional transportation needs.
For those just looking to stay within the few
square miles of the port, an engaging and
unique way to get around includes Space
Coast Segway Tours. Reservations are
recommended.
Take in Some Great Sites
Exploration Tower at Port Canaveral is
located at the port and offers some of the
finest views of the surrounding area. With
seven floors of exhibits and interactive play,
there’s something for everyone.
The Merritt Island National Wildlife
Refuge is a 'gateway site' for the Great
Florida Birding Trail. Established in 1963
as an overlay of NASA's John F. Kennedy
Space Center, the refuge provides a habitat
for more than 1,500 species of plants and
animals.
In Historic Cocoa Village, the mood is calmer
but the views no less stunning. Walk along
the edge of the Indian River Lagoon, and
take the time to step into the small shops and
pubs that make this place so endearing.
Legendary Cocoa Beach, a five-minute
Uber ride from the mouth of the port, has
everything from parasailing to surf lessons.
Not to mention the world-famous Ron Jon
Surf Shop.
Now that is a full day around Port Canaveral.
Happy and exhausted? Worry not; your ship
is right nearby in one of the top cruise ports
in the world.
The nine Most Photographed
Places on Florida’s Space Coast
Brevard County, home to Florida’s Space Coast, has a total area of some 1,557 square miles. It’s bigger
than many small countries, and in that great expanse comes an amazing variety of both natural and
urban scenes, all of which seem custom-made for a photographer’s lens. But since this area is indeed
so big, and you only have so much time here, we decided to make it easy for you and provide a list of
the nine most photographed places on this salty coastline. Perhaps on your journey, you’ll discover
some of your own. Here are all nine in no particular order:
1. Cocoa Beach Pier: The Cocoa Beach Pier, visually, is a constantly changing structure. Whether you get a
shot of it as the sun rises above the Atlantic in the morning or backlit in the evening with subtle changes
in the sea below, every picture of the pier is different in some way. And always get a picture of you and
your family at the end of the pier; that’s the classic shot.
2. Kennedy Space Center: The Kennedy Space Center is most internationally-recognized area on Florida’s
Space Coast. Here you can get shots of rockets in flight, space shuttles resting forever on the ground
(the Atlantis exhibit), and even some incredible natural beauty with the local wildlife. Also, getting a
picture of the massive Vehicle Assembly Building is a must: it’s still the largest single-roomed building
on the planet and an icon that’s been in many Hollywood movies.
3. Brevard Zoo: Home to more than 650 animals, only at the Brevard Zoo can you see animal residents
up close and personal. Adventure surrounds not only the animal exhibits but also the zip line course at
Treetop Trek. Snap a selfie with a giraffe or latch on that GoPro for amazing footage.
4. Turkey Creek Sanctuary: Turkey Creek offers very rare views of some of Florida’s last remaining scrub
hammock habitat, and it provides actual elevation for views of the creek below and the manatees that
frequent it. Turkey Creek is a natural treasure hidden in Palm Bay, but it is easy to find and free to access.
5. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge: Similar to the natural area around Kennedy Space Center,
another wonder for environmental photos is the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. At the refuge,
try to get a shot of the elusive and critically-endangered Florida scrub jay.
6. Kelly Slater Statue: Everyone wants a picture with the King of Surfing, but he’s often jet-setting the
world in search of perfect waves. Fortunately, we have a bronze version of him forever at the entrance
of Downtown Cocoa Beach. Try mimicking his infamous forehead snap that never really has been
replicated by any other wave rider to ever live (although we always try). Kelly’s statue can be found
where A1A splits into separate north and south lanes.
7. Exploration Tower: In the heart of Port Canaveral lies the architectural marvel Exploration Tower.
The best photos are captured either of the Tower glowing in the darkness of night or, from one of the
Tower's balconies, of the surrounding beauty of Florida’s Space Coast.
8. Deep Sea Fishing: You don’t have to be a fishing pro to enjoy a deep sea fishing adventure. Take a charter
out of Port Canaveral and see the coastline from a whole new perspective while catching grouper,
kingfish and cobia. Capture the moment you catch your fish on the boat or at the port at the fish hang.
9. Sebastian Inlet Fishing Pier: And finally, once you’ve driven to the very end of Florida’s Space Coast,
you’ll cross the Sebastian Inlet Bridge. Atop the bridge, you’ll see breathtaking sights in all directions,
including the infamous Monster Hole. But don’t stop at just that! Simply spend some time at this
amazing state park, and set your lens toward the curving concrete pier that is full of characters 24/7.
World-class surf photography is a staple here as well.
All of that should fill up your chip, film canister, phone, or give you a book’s worth of Polaroids.
Florida’s Space Coast can indeed come home with you, and you’ll be glad it did. Explore more by
visiting VisitSpaceCoast.com/things-to-do.
The Titusville area at the north end of Florida’s Space
Coast is the only place on the planet where rockets
blast off, sea turtles nest, and soothing sunrises give
way to inviting surf. The contrast of high-tech wonders
of the space program and the natural beauty of the
area places Titusville in a class by itself. Bordering
the Indian River Lagoon, Titusville is a gateway to
the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, the
Canaveral National Seashore and the Merritt Island
National Wildlife Refuge.
CONNECTING SPACE AND EARTH
Be sure to visit Space View Park with the American Space Museum and Walk of Fame,
bronze handprints of the Mercury 7 Astronauts, and monuments to Gemini, Apollo
and Space Shuttle programs. The American Space Museum and Walk of Fame nearby
houses amazing artifacts not seen anywhere else, with volunteer docents who worked
behind the scenes of America’s spaceflight missions. They love to tell stories of the early
days of space exploration.
Kennedy Space Center is where astronauts blasted in rocketships 238,000 miles to
the moon and back. Here is the home of the men and women who dared to attempt
the impossible and the geniuses who made it real. And it is where rockets still roar into
orbit. That’s why they call this the Space Coast.
During your visit to Kennedy Space Center, you can strap in and launch as part of one
of the most realistic spaceflight simulators in the world or immerse your imagination
inside the immense IMAX Theater experience. And that’s just the beginning! Get up
close to Space Shuttle Atlantis in a remarkable display that puts you so close you can
actually see the space dust on its nose. Meet astronauts. Take a bus tour, relive the
excitement of the Apollo era, and much more!
CLUE The Musical at
Titusville Playhouse
Canaveral National Seashore
GATEWAY
TO NATURE
You’ll love visiting this city with its many riverfront
parks, fantastic fresh and saltwater
fishing, year-round golf, kayak rentals, and
animals and plants that are found nowhere
else on earth.
Right across the Indian River Lagoon sits
the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge
with more threatened and endangered
species than all other Florida refuges
combined. Winter is prime bird-watching
time with over 300 species spotted, but any
time of year will reward visitors with views
of alligators, deer, manatees and more. The
boundaries of Kennedy Space Center and
the wildlife refuge are the same, but NASA
only uses approximately eight percent of the
220 square miles, leaving the remaining natural
wetlands, scrub and hammock habitats
for exploration. Driving trails, hiking trails
and boat ramps give easy access to off-thebeaten-path
locales.
Canaveral National Seashore is the last
undeveloped stretch of beach on the East
Coast. It runs 23 miles from Titusville to
New Smyrna Beach, with Playalinda Beach
as the southern access. These beaches are
some of the prime rocket launch viewing
sites for daytime launches. Canaveral
National Seashore closes from sunset to
sunrise, so seeing night launches from here
is not allowed, but during the day, you’ll be
very surprised how close you can get to the
launch pads.
Florida’s Coast to Coast Trail, better
known as the C2C, utilizes the East Central
Regional Rail Trail alignment and will give
users access to small towns, flowing springs,
state parks, museums, and beaches along
the way. Once completed, the C2C will
stretch from the Gulf of Mexico in Pinellas
County through Central Florida to Downtown
Titusville, eventually terminating at the
Atlantic Ocean and the Canaveral National
Seashore. This multi-use trail corridor will
eventually connect with two other regional
trail systems – the East Coast Greenway and
the St. Johns River to Sea Loop – all converging
in Downtown Titusville.
SOMETHING
FOR EVERYONE
Titusville entices vacationers of all ages
with activities including rocket launches,
bird-watching, and thrilling airboat rides. This
area is also home to five museums that honor
the notable achievements of many, as well as
the rich history of Florida’s Space Coast. Historic
Downtown Titusville offers shops of all
sorts including an art gallery, clothing and gift
shops, charming restaurants, antique stores
and the Titusville Playhouse at the Historic
Emma Parrish Theater.
3 Unexpected Ways
to Experience a Rocket Launch
Rocket launches from Florida’s Space Coast are a unique and spectacular sight: booming from the tip of Cape Canaveral at
the Kennedy Space Center, the high-arcing fireball rumbles into the cosmos above, and it is a memory not soon forgotten.
In addition to the sheer wonder of the rocket launch is the incredible varied visual nature of the launch: each
has a singular beauty and specificity to it. From night launches and the angles of flight over the eastern horizon
to the power of the engine being used, each launch experience is like a snowflake of astronomy.
Another little-known aspect is the various ways you can experience a rocket launch. Here are tips for you. For starters,
though, it’s key to check the launch schedule. This is a busy year on the eastern range, with rockets from SpaceX as well as
United Launch Alliance going up quite regularly, but be sure one is within your trip range. Also, rocket launches can be a bit
fickle (it is rocket science after all), and weather can play a large role. Probabilities for good weather conditions during a
launch window are predicted by the Air Force and are usually quite accurate.
In the Air
Once you’ve got a rocket lined up
in your window and the weather
looks fine, it’s time to find a vantage
point for astonishing views on
Florida’s Space Coast. One such
place is off the ground: Beachside
Helicopters offers unparalleled
views of a launch from midair.
Prices are lower than you may
think (starting as low as $29 per
person), but be sure to contact
them as early as possible to secure
a time during a launch.
On the Water
For those looking for a cosmic viewing
a bit more laid back, the water is where
you need to be, and there are some neat
ways of doing this. Renting a boat, jet
ski or even a kayak can be a tremendous
way to literally soak in a launch.
This option gets you away from the
crowds that fill every local landmass,
and, as a bonus, it gives you a perfectly
flat and aquamarine view straight up to
the mangrove swamps surrounding the
launch pad. The Indian River Lagoon and
the Atlantic are both great choices, but be
sure to remain out of the clearance range.
On the Shore
Finally, it’s a little old-fashioned, but
there may be no better place to watch
a launch than from the soft sands of
Playalinda Beach at Canaveral National
Seashore. A local favorite for over a
half-century, a simple walk down the
beach can get you and your family within
five miles of the launch tower. At this
range, you get not only the best view, but
you’ll feel the engines. Keep in mind that
the Canaveral National Seashore is open
from dusk to dawn, so you unfortunately
won’t be able to watch night launches
from this location.
These are but a few of the many ways to revel in a rocket launch on Florida’s Space Coast. Thrilling and beautiful, it’s the
area’s namesake for a reason. You may not have noticed, but our local area code is 3-2-1, and if you come for a rocket
launch, you’ll understand why. Liftoff! For more information on upcoming launches, please visit SpaceCoastLaunches.com
