‘What the World Needs Now Is Love, Sweet Love’
Dubbed amongst the 40 biggest
hit-makers of the entire rock era,
and the second most-charted female
singer of all time, Dionne Warwick
stands as one of the highesthonored,
well-known and celebrated
iconic stars of our time.
Teaming up with songwriters Burt
Bacharach and Hal David, 56 of
Warwick’s singles made the Billboard
Hot 100 chart between 1962 and
1998, and 80 singles made all
Billboard charts combined. Songs
include “That’s What Friends Are
For,” “Walk on By,” “I Say a Little
Prayer,” “Alfie,” “What the World
Needs Now Is Love” and an endless
stream of others.
Born Marie Dionne Warrick into a
gospel family, she began her musical
destiny at age 6 at the New Hope
Baptist Church in Newark, New
Jersey. After graduating high school
and obtaining a scholarship to Hartt
College of Music, she spent much
time recording background vocals
with her group The Gospelaires,
comprising her sister Dee Dee and
aunt Cissy Houston, mother of the
late Whitney Houston.
At a Drifters session while working
on a song called “Mexican
Divorce,” she was discovered by
Burt Bacharach. During her career
she won five Grammy Awards and
countless other awards, enough to
fill the pages of a dictionary.
She has been named the United
Nations Global Ambassador for the
Food and Agriculture Organization
and a United States Ambassador of
Health.
In a powerful and explosive
performance at the Opening
Ceremonies of the 2017 Life Ball—
the largest and most opulent charity
event in the world - Dionne and her
granddaughter, the beautiful and
talented Cheyenne Elliott, sang a
heart-warming duet of “What the
World Needs Now Is Love.”
On Aug. 15, 2017, Warwick was
honored with an induction into the
Apollo Theater Walk of Fame, and
in recognition of her contributions
in health at the Harlem State Office
Building with multiple proclamations
and a citation during Harlem Week.
In November she will again be
honored for her outstanding
contributions to the HIV/AIDS crisis
with the esteemed Marian Anderson
Award.

Congratulations on being
honored for Harlem Week; I
can’t think of anyone more
deserving. However you
certainly are no stranger
to being honored, having
received nearly every award
known to man, including
Best Female Pop Vocal
Performance, Grammy Hall
of Fame, Billboard Music
Award, ASCAP Lifetime
Achievement, Women’s
World Awards, United
Nations Global Ambassador
for the Food and Agriculture
Organization and many in
between. Does this newest
honor that you recently
received have a special
meaning?
Absolutely. Each time I
am thought of to receive
recognition by ones who
thought me worthy is a
very special event.

When the top of the pop crop
can’t seem to stay relevant for
more than 50 seconds, how is
it that after 50 years you still
remain relevant?
I’ve been fortunate to have
had two of the premier
composers write songs for
me that have had the ability
to grow with me, and my
listening audience keeping me,
and my music as fresh today as
when it was first recorded.
2
Do you think that if you had
started your career today, with all
the free streams and downloads,
and the state of the music
industry, would you have had the
supreme success that you had
back then?
That is difficult to say.
With everything that you have
accomplished in your career
- singer, actress, ambassador,
mother, grandmother, top 40
biggest hit maker, etc. - is there
anything that you still wish to
achieve?
The Oscar, The Emmy and the
Tony...not necessarily in that
order.
Do you recall the proudest
moment of your career?
I’d have to say winning my first
Grammy.
If you believe that music can
change the world, which one
of your songs would you use to
change it?
“What the World Needs Now
Is Love, Sweet Love.”
Do you have an idol?
Too many to mention.

2
PHOTO BY: JASON E. ABRAMS, JEA PRODUCTIONS, INC.
2
Can you pinpoint a moment
that changed the entire
trajectory of your life?
There have been many that
have taken me to different
levels.
I know that you strongly
support your beautiful
and extremely talented
granddaughter, Cheyenne.
Since I was first to interview
her, and have been following
her career, I’m wondering, what
was the best piece of advice
you have given her, or what
advice would you give any new
artist for that matter?
I don’t give advice; I
encourage. I just told
Cheyenne to be herself, as
she couldn’t nor should want
to be anyone but herself.
What do you most want to be
remembered for?
My music, I think, will be
most remembered, and that
will be just fine.
Are there any new projects on
the horizon?
I will be recording soon, so
keep your eyes and ears
open!
CELEBRITY CORRESPONDENT
DROZE
‘Raised By The Radio’
Powerful singer and multi-instrumentalist Droze (aka Charles
Pedroza) made his official debut last year, featured on artist Danny
G Italy’s single “Never Stop.” He is currently about to release “The
Droze Project,” a new EP, following the recent release of his latest
single, “Tell Me.”
Although plagued by a difficult childhood going back and forth
from Miami to New York City, Droze was raised by the radio,
especially the R&B stations of the ‘80s. With several rough teenage
years behind him, he managed to obtain 12 years of classical music
training on four different instruments. Eventually, long-time friend
Michael Rodriguez discovered that Droze could sing during a
karaoke performance, and the rest is history.
Droze will be featured at the Jersey City Pride Festival on
August 26.
How has your classical music
training influenced the music
you put out today?
I think the biggest influence has
got to be my musical ear. I can
jam out to just about anything,
because I can see the musical
structure, the key changes and
nuances. If you go through my
iTunes, you’ll find everything
from country to Motown to
french hip-hop and even some
opera. Any track at its root starts
with instrumentation. That’s key.
Do you think that tough
teenage years helped to mold
the music and the messages
you put out?
I think art requires a certain
degree of pain. I know it’s a
horrible thing to say, but I think
that gartists put out better stuff
when we’re going through
hardships. The things I’ve been
through find their way into
my lyrics, and that memory in
turn directly affects how I sing
a certain track compared to
another one. Tough years are
imperative.
Are there any specific new
projects that you are currently
working on?
With the album being new-ish,
my main focus is getting it out
there. I think my entire team is
working on getting the album
airplay and getting my face out
there. With “No Time” being
the latest single, I have a slightly
more specific focus
on that, and the
track is making the
rounds. I’ve caught
it on the air from
New York to LA
and as far away
as Croatia and
Ibiza. But of course
there’s always
another track to
promote, and new
collaborations to
look out for, and
new music videos
and so much more
I can’t get into yet.
g
Which artist or artists were
you inspired by growing up?
I grew up listening and loving
groups like 702, Total and SWV,
but being Latino and in Miami,
it was hard to not idolize voices
like Jerry Rivera and Marc
Anthony. Nineties R&B groups
will still always be my go-to
though.
Knowing what you know
now, what advice would you
give your younger self?
Number one, it gets better. I
promise it does. Number two,
in the words of RuPaul, unless
they payin’ yo’ bills, pay them
bitches no mind.
Where do you see yourself in
5 years?
If I have it my way, I want
to be performing on stage
somewhere monthly, whether
it be big festivals or nightclubs.
And I want to be a featured
vocalist on some heavy-hitting
DJ tracks, like Calvin Harris or
David Guetta. I’m ready for
more, and I hope my fans are
too.
Butching It Up, Are We?
Those were literally my thoughts after my
very first NYC friend said that we should go
to this quaint, yet not-so-quaint bar called
Hardware to meet a friend of his, who is
actually a performing drag queen (I’m starting
to learn that there are all sorts of connections
and styles around this island). So, we show up
to Hardware, and I’m fully prepared with my
hammer and saw to chug down a beer, which
I do not enjoy, and there are way too many
calories that I cannot afford to consume as I’m
trying to keep up with the fitness gays here
in the city. After I realize that it’s not a butch
bar and I can let down my hair—figuratively,
of course, because my hair is locked in with
TRESemmé—I started to soak in the scenery.
The bartenders were dancing freely as they were
slinging drinks toward patrons and dancing with
each other, all while enjoying the NYC night
with fellow momos (yes, “momo” is a term that
I use referring to us homosexuals—get used to
it). Laughing. Posing. Pouring. This is the life
that they are living: flaunting their skills behind
the bar as they are quickly concocting beverages
to make that money, honey.
After our what seemed to be short stint at
Hardware, we decided to try out another Hell’s
Kitchen establishment called Flaming Saddles.
At first, I didn’t know what to think, because
it kind of startled me: First, because it was a
country bar in the midst of progressive NYC,
and second, where I went to college was in
BFE-Arkansas where “gay” wasn’t used as a
celebratory descriptor but rather a derogatory
term. So I had some hesitation, as one could
only imagine.
After I took the leap of faith on that saddle, I
then found that it was quite fascinating to see
my kinfolk dancing to remixed, honkey-tonk
music. I started joining in and was just having
a bless-your-heart kind of time! Bartenders
and servers started getting on the bar and
began shaking what their mommas gave them,
gaining dollar after dollar. It was just a great
time! Luckily, I ran out of cold hard cash
before they started playing “Out Tonight” from
the Broadway production of RENT, or else I
would’ve had to jump up on that counter and
shake my groove thing to gain that money right
back.
Overall (no pun intended), it was a great
evening filled with lights, cameras to take selfies
and action—or at least some of the drunk guys
and dolls were hoping for. Who knows, maybe
my inner Florida Georgia Line will show up to
contribute to this here NYC country-land.
BY IAN-MICHAEL BERGERON
@ianmichaelinwonderland
M and I started
hanging out more and
more as I adjusted to city life.
Whenever I wanted to go out,
he was down. Rain or shine,
he was always up to hang out.
Most of our nights consisted
of me getting drunk and
passing out on his couch, but
as our friendship progressed,
we started spending real,
quality time together: Meeting
at 10 p.m. to pregame at his
apartment became meeting at
6 p.m. for dinner and a movie.
We found we both had a
passion for old films, and he
appreciated my generic gayboy
obsession with Marilyn
Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.
(“Sabrina” is my favorite
movie of all time.) (And no,
not “The Teenage Witch.”)
We also, oddly enough, both
loved “Adventure Time,” and
it became the perfect thing
to put on in the background
while we talked for hours
about past relationships.
M knew all about The Ex
Fiance, and watched us get
together and break up—time
and time again. He’d been
through a similar relationship
himself, one with someone
he loved but just wasn’t right
for. We had a lot in common
actually, regardless of his
being older than I.
Despite becoming closer
friends, we still had plenty
of nights where we just went
out and got wasted. I’d play
wingman for him, he’d play
wingman for me, or we’d just
go back to his place to eat
leftover Chinese food and
pass out, sure to be hungover
the next day.
PART TWO
Friends with Benefits
One night, after a fair amount
of margaritas, cranberry
vodkas and white wine (a
winning combo), we ended up
back at his place, laying fully
clothed in his bed.
“I worry about it,” I
whispered, “you know?”
“Worry about what?” he
asked.
“I don’t know. Life. Love.” I
stared at the ceiling, which
was spinning ever so slightly.
“I worry that The Ex Fiance is
my soul mate, but he doesn’t
see it. I worry that I’m not
going to have another love
like that. I worry that no one
else is going to love me.”
“That’s ridiculous.” I turned
and realized he was staring at
me hard, seriously. “Anyone
would be stupid not to love
you.”
“Maybe.” I shrugged.
“Anyway, I won’t stay young
forever. I know that. I worry
that this is my only chance.”
“You’re always going to be
beautiful.” I looked at him
again, at that serious face,
so concerned about me, so
protective.
“Maybe,” I said, stumbling
forward to kiss him. He pulled
away, but only an inch.
“Are you sure you want to do
that?”
I giggled, sat up and
took off my t-shirt.
“What are friends for?
” I asked playfully,
kissing him again.
He didn’t pull away that time;
instead, he reached down and
unbuttoned my hot pink shortshorts,
pulling me in closer,
kissing me harder.
We didn’t have sex that night,
but we did both get off. It
was the first time I’d spent
the night in his bed. Laying
there the next morning, room
still spinning, I wondered if
you could have friends with
benefits, or if I was just too
damn greedy.
CHEYENNE
Talented and beautiful Cheyenne
Elliott, who just happens to be the
granddaughter of the legendary
icon Dionne Warwick, is bound to
be raising some eyebrows as she
begins filming her debut big screen
appearance in a new horror movie,
Clinton Road.
Elliott thus far has concentrated
on her music and songwriting and
has appeared at the 2017 Life Ball,
the largest and most decadent and
prestigious charity event in the world,
singing a duet with her grandmother.
She has showcased her vocal talent at
the Duplex in New York City and has
been featured at The Imperial Court
of New York’s Night of a Thousand
Gowns, as well as New York Pride.
eBriefly describe the
premise of the film
and the character you
portray.
It is a horror movie very
loosely based on some
of the urban legends
and stories behind the
famous Clinton Road in
New Jersey. My character
will be a celebrity guest
The movie is currently in production,
and on behalf of Get Out!, we’d like
to wish her much luck, and will be
looking forward to its release.
of the nightclub owned
by Vincent Pastore’s
character in the film. I
will be in the company
of some of the other
well-known actors and
celebrities in this scene
taking place in the VIP
area of the nightclub.
I am excited fabout
working with this cast,
which includes Ice-T,
Vincent Pastore, Bo
Dietl, Vincent Young,
Fredro Starr, Erin
O’Brien, Ace Young
and some other very
talented actors, as well
as the producers - Steve
Stanulis, Noel Ashman
and Richard Grieco for
Stanulis Productions.

How is the character similar to you?
My character is both similar and different
from me. I think a lot of people assume
that all singers and actors hang out at
clubs every night. I always enjoy when
I am able to get out and have fun with
my friends or family and people from
the business. But, I am working so hard
to prepare for several new opportunities
that are coming up that I do not actually
get to go out like that. In the movie I will
be out and about, having a good time
with other characters. In real life I am
working on my career and working out
most of the time!
How will you prepare for the part?
I treat auditions and will treat any role
like I am preparing for a lead role. So,
I am setting up one-on-one sessions
with my esteemed acting coach, Susan
Batson, to go over my lines and prepare
for this role. Susan has the ability to
extract the essence of any character out
of the actor she is coaching. I have also
spoken with the producers about going
on a ride-along on the actual Clinton
Road for inspiration. I am a huge fan of
horror and thrillers. That opportunity of
actually going to Clinton Road at night
sounds terrifyingly exciting.
When and where will the movie
premiere?
The film will premiere in New York City.
But, it needs to be filmed first before
there is a release date set! I will keep
you all posted on my social networking
sites! The premiere will certainly be starstudded!

e
Are you working on any
new musical projects?
I am excited to share
with all of you that I will
be recording new songs
in a few weeks. They are
really fresh and current! I
am happy to be getting
back into the recording
studio! Hopefully we can
get them released as
soon as possible so that
we can all share my joy!
What’s next for you in
the movie industry, and
what are your hopes
for your future as an
actress?
My hope is that “the
best is yet to come!” I
am thrilled about this
film and other projects
that my team and I are
considering.
