DONATIONs BIG AND sMALL MAKE 

AN IMPACT AT NEW ULM MEDICAL CENTER IN 2011 

In 2011, the New Ulm Medical Center Foundation 

exceeded its financial fundraising goal of $366,000 and 

raised $428,000 thanks to the generosity of 1,974 donors. 

What a great testament of our community – our patients, 

our employees, our physicians, our local businesses and 

organizations, our auxiliary and volunteers – who give 

so generously to ensure exceptional healthcare in our 

community. But meeting the goal isn’t our greatest 

accomplishment. Thanks to your donation, here’s what you 

made happen in 2011. 

vIRGINIA PIPER CANCER INsTITUTE – NEW ULM 

• The expansion and renovation of the Virginia Piper 

Cancer Institute – New Ulm was completed and 

celebrated. The project features much needed additional 

space, increased privacy, and a warm, welcoming 

atmosphere for patients. 

• A Celebration Fund was started to help cancer center 

patients celebrate the many milestones in their lives, from 

birthday cakes to flowers to a small gift given on their last 

day of treatment. 

• The Turkey Dinner celebration is a free dinner provided to 

all current and past patients and family members to warm 

their hearts and support them during their difficult journey. 

HEART sAFE 

• Four AEDs were given to the New Ulm Police 

Department’s squad cars. 

• Five AEDs were given to the New Ulm Public Utilities 

department. 

• One AED was given to Immanuel Lutheran School in 

Courtland. 

• Face shields were purchased to give to participants who 

attend CPR training. 

• New infant CPR mannequins were purchased for NUMC 

staff and physicians for community training purposes. 

EqUIPMENT 

• An additional NU-Step exercise machine was purchased 

for the Cardiac Rehab and the new Pulmonary Rehab 

program. Although the Foundation purchased one a few 

years ago, another one was needed due to the addition of 

the pulmonary rehab program. 

• The television cable expenses at NUMC are entirely paid 

for with a donation from the NUMC Auxiliary. 

• A vein finder was purchased for the lab 

department. Although it can be used on all ages, 

the focus is on children with special healthcare 

needs who frequently visit the lab for testing. 

• The television in our Telemedicine Room, which is used 

primarily for physician and staff education, was donated 

through the Foundation. 

• DVD players were installed in all inpatient rooms with a 

donation from the NUMC Auxiliary. 

• New planters and flowers were placed at all entrances to 

NUMC to welcome patients and visitors. 

• The Serenity Garden near the Emergency Room entrance 

received additional flowers and plants. 

PROGRAMs 

• DAAN, an eight-session curriculum that focuses on 

nutrition and physical activity for students in grades 2, 3 

and 4 provided at no cost to area schools, received support 

through grants received by the Foundation. 

• A new exercise program called EASE was started through 

Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute for seniors who were 

beginning an exercise program. 

• Medication Therapy Management (MTM) was provided 

at no cost to local patients. MTM is a one-on-one 

consultation between a patient and a pharmacist to resolve 

drug therapy issues (e.g., side effects, dose scheduling), 

improve adherence, find affordable alternatives, and 

increase general health literacy. 

• Heart of New Ulm’s worksite summit event was partially 

sponsored with a local donation. 

• The NUMC Hospice program was able to offer a memorial 

service for family members of past patients, bereavement 

mailings were started in 2011 to provide information 

and support to family members, staff and volunteers 

were sponsored by the Foundation to attend a local care 

conference and the TLC fund provided financial assistance 

to patients and/or family members during their time of need. 

• Two nursing scholarships were awarded to local nursing 

students who intend to serve at New Ulm Medical Center. 

• Financial assistance was offered to qualifying patients who 

use the therapy pool and cardio equipment as part of their 

rehabilitation.

what do you do when you have 

a team of passionate caregivers 

providing top-notch care to patients 

sitting in a too-small department for 

hours at a time, sometimes almost 

on top of each other? If you have a 

pool of equally passionate and caring 

donors, you build them a beautiful 

new department to match the 

atmosphere with the quality of care. 

That is how Virginia Piper Cancer 

Institute – New Ulm (VPCI) came 

to fruition at the end of 2011. More 

than 1,400 donors contributed 

to the project which saw the 

former cancer center move from 

its location near the Emergency 

Department to the lower level 

of the clinic, next to the Sister 

Kenny Rehabilitation Institute – 

New Ulm, more than doubling its 

space. Allina Hospitals & Clinics 

contributed $475,000 to the project 

and the Foundation committed to 

raising $500,000. 

The project features: 

• 12 infusion bays 

• 5 co-located clinic rooms 

• Conference/telemedicine room 

• Resource and gathering area 

• Heated chairs 

• Televisions at each chair 

• Limited lab and radiology services 

onsite in the department

“ We are all so thankful for the wonderful 

support this project has received,” said 

Foundation Executive Director Carisa Buegler. 

But what’s equally as important 

as all the new equipment, wall 

treatments and space is the 

partnership with Virginia Piper 

Cancer Institute that means 

expanded resources for the 

New Ulm facility. This includes 

genetic counseling, clinical trials 

and integrative therapies (such 

as massage, aromatherapy and 

music therapy). 

“We are all so thankful for the 

wonderful support this project 

has received,” said Foundation 

Executive Director Carisa 

Buegler. “For many, it has 

really been a personal journey. 

Some have given money to pay 

honor or tribute to a lost loved 

one, or given in thanks and 

appreciation of the great care 

they received. And then there 

are others who have never 

experienced the department, 

yet gave because they wanted 

to support their community 

members, even those they don’t 

know, to make their journey a 

little more comfortable. Our 

region embraced this project 

and the result is a brand new 

facility that offers the finest in 

cancer care.” 

The journey is not quite 

complete, yet. In summer 2012, 

the Garden of Hope will be 

completed just outside the 

walls of the new department. 

For many, this is the most 

exciting part of the project. It 

will include a water feature, 

benches and tables, bird feeders 

and beautiful landscaping. 

On weather-appropriate days, 

patients will be able to sit 

outside in the garden to receive 

treatment.

In Memoriam 

More than a year in the making, the 

construction and opening of the virginia 

Piper Cancer Institute – New Ulm (vPCI) 

was symbolic of the disease that most of 

their patients struggle with – it had its 

ups and downs. Of the patients who lost 

their battle to cancer this year, one was 

the cancer center campaign chairperson 

and our dear friend, Barb Fenske. 

Barb was passionate about this project 

and she would have been so proud to 

see it come to fruition. sadly, she passed 

away five months before its completion. 

Her passion left a lasting legacy, 

however. After her passing, her family 

shared with us that Barb had left a very 

generous donation for the project and 

in addition, she encouraged her friends 

and family to give to the project in her 

memory. The NUMC Foundation received 

an astounding $13,000 given by over 300 

people in her memory. 

We are proud to say that the Garden of 

Hope – to be completed in the summer 

of 2012 – will be named in honor of Barb. 

It was part of the project that she spoke 

of with such enthusiasm and we know 

that her spirit of joy will be present in that 

space to comfort our patients, friends and 

family members for years to come.

Helping Seniors EASE 

Into a Tailored Exercise Routine 

NEW ULM MEDICAL CENTER FOUNDATION

when arn and ruth koelpin of 

New Ulm read in the newspaper 

that the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation 

Institute – New Ulm (SKRI) was 

starting new exercise therapy classes 

for seniors, they rushed to sign up. 

“It said the class size was limited 

so we thought we’d get in early,” 

recalled Arn, 80, a retired professor 

of history and religion. 

The new offering was supported in 

part with donations from the New 

Ulm Medical Center Foundation. 

Arn and Ruth, 70, were the first 

to enroll in EASE (Exercise & 

Activity for Seniors Education) 

and they’re glad they did. They 

took the classes, held over three 

days in October and have been 

implementing the exercises they 

were taught ever since. 

“What they showed us was both 

informative and practical,” said 

Arn, who tries to squeeze at least 

20 minutes of his new exercises in 

most days. 

The classes are more education 

than exercise, said Mary Bauer, 

a physical therapy assistant, who 

leads the classes with Deb Beatty, 

manager of SKRI. The point is to 

teach participants what to do and 

why so that they can go home and 

implement what they’ve learned, 

Bauer explained. 

Classes are offered at 1:30 p.m. 

the second and fourth Monday, 

Wednesday and Friday of each 

month. 

In the first class, participants are 

taught why it’s important for them 

to exercise at their age, the types 

of exercises they should be doing 

(aerobic, flexibility and strength 

training) and resources in the 

community for group exercise. 

The first class also covers how to 

monitor your heart rate and other 

safety points about exercising. 

Participants start exercising during 

the second session. Class size is 

limited to eight seniors so that the 

exercises can be individualized 

to the needs and abilities of each 

participant, Bauer said. Being able 

to tailor the exercises is important, 

she added. “If someone can’t do a 

stretch one way, we can show them 

something else. It’s not: ‘Everyone 

does the same thing.’ ” 

In the third session, participants 

show Bauer what they have learned 

from the classes and can ask any 

questions they have. Participants 

are given lots of written materials 

so they can learn and practice the 

exercises on their own. 

Ruth, a retired secretary, had been 

a regular walker before taking 

the class. Now she’s added some 

flexibility and strength training 

to her week because she realizes 

how important that can be to 

maintaining her ability to move as 

she gets older. 

She loves that the instructors 

showed her strengthening and 

flexibility exercises she can do 

even before she gets out of bed in 

the morning. 

“I bring my 

knees up toward 

my shoulders and I do 

bicycle kicks,” she said. 

“These are things I can do while 

lying down in bed, but I might have 

more difficulty doing if I had to lie 

on the floor.” 

Arn said he was happy to show up 

the teachers when they asked him 

to get up and down from a chair 

as many times as he could in two 

minutes. “It was tiring,” he said, but 

he doesn’t think they expected him 

to do so well. 

The best part, Ruth added, is that 

the classes were free. They’re 

recommending to all their friends 

that they sign up, too. “We tell 

them we think it would be well 

worth their time. It certainly was 

ours,” Ruth said. 

Seniors don’t have to attend all 

three sessions, Bauer said. “Some 

might only take one part. They may 

not do them all, but at least they’ve 

taken something from it, which is 

all we can ask.”

New Ulm Police Department Receives 

Six New AEDs Thanks to Donations 

the old cliché of “every minute 

counts” is especially true when 

it comes to sudden cardiac arrest 

(SCA). For every minute that 

passes after a sudden cardiac arrest, 

the chance of survival drops 10 

percent. After 10 minutes, the 

victim’s chance of resuscitation is 

essentially none. 

This is the basis for support behind 

placing Automated External 

Defibrillators (AED) in as many 

public and private areas as possible 

across the entire region. Since 

New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC) 

began placing AEDs in 2004, more 

than 120 have been distributed to 

the places where people work, play 

and live in New Ulm, Gibbon, 

Fairfax, Winthrop, Sleepy Eye, 

Arlington, Gaylord, Courtland, 

St. George, Lafayette and beyond.

In 2011, with help from the 

NUMC Foundation and the Allina 

Employee Giving Campaign, 

six AEDs were placed with the 

New Ulm Police Department, at 

a total of $7,000. 

“The police are almost always 

the first responders in a sudden 

cardiac arrest,” explained 

outgoing HeartSafe Communities 

Coordinator Lori Burkhart. “Time 

is of the essence in these situations 

and the police officers have 

been trained in CPR and AED 

techniques.” 

For the NUPD, a sturdier model of 

the AEDs was purchased and they 

also have pediatric capabilities, 

whereas the older ones did not. The 

AEDs that the NUPD previously 

had were at least 15 years old and 

were outdated, Burkhart said. 

“The AEDs owned by the 

New Ulm Police Department are 

used about ten times a year,” said 

Chief of Police Myron Wieland. 

“The officers are all trained in the 

use of the equipment but the AEDs 

are very user friendly.” 

Officer Eric Gramentz agrees that 

the equipment is “easy to use,” 

he said. “The first department I 

worked for didn’t have AEDs and 

it really makes a big difference to 

have this equipment when you 

respond to a call.” 

The NUMC Foundation has helped 

to place most of the AEDs that 

were placed in non-profit entities 

throughout the region over the last 

several years.

Some important facts about 

Sudden Cardiac Arrest from the 

American Red Cross 

• SCA is one of the leading causes of 

death in the United states. It strikes 

over 300,000 victims each year. 

• Only one out of 20 SCA victims 

survives, but many of these lives 

could be saved through early 

defibrillation. 

• Defibrillation is the treatment of 

irregular, sporadic or absent heart 

rhythms by an electrical current to 

the heart. It is the only definitive 

treatment for sCA. Defibrillation 

administered within four minutes 

after collapse is most successful.

What’s Ahead in 2012 

the new ulm medical center foundation is extremely grateful for the 

support the community has given to the various projects and programs over 

the years. Amazing things have been achieved, and wonderful things are 

ahead in 2012. 

The Virginia Piper Cancer Institute – New Ulm will continue to flourish 

with energy and excitement as the Garden of Hope is designed and 

constructed this year and new patient programs are identified where 

philanthropy can make a significant impact. 

The Birth Center on the second floor of the hospital will also have its 

share of excitement in anticipation of a new OB unit. Today nearly 25–35 

percent of our patients do not stay within the unit because we do not have 

the space. This does not offer the greatest patient safety and security; or 

operating efficiencies for our staff and physicians. It also does not provide 

the exceptional patient experience that we want to make sure we are 

giving each and every one of our patients. NUMC is expecting additional 

deliveries this year given the closure of OB units at other area hospitals, 

which will only compound our current issue. The relocation, expansion 

and renovation of our Birth Center to existing space on our inpatient 

unit will grow the number of OB patient rooms from four to seven all into 

one contained area. This expansion will become a beautiful new space to 

welcome our newest patients, offer additional security and improve staff 

efficiency. The NUMC Foundation has set a goal of $200,000 towards the 

$900,000 expansion. 

The NUMC Foundation also continues to focus on supporting End of Life 

programs and services to enhance the patient and family experience, Hearts 

Beat Back: The Heart of New Ulm Project in its effort to decrease heart 

attacks, and the Children’s Health Initiative to decrease the incidence of 

childhood obesity in the New Ulm area.
