CENTRAL CITYBISON By: Josh Skluzacek The Central City Bison enter 2017 coming off of a 6-4 season, whereas the 10-seed in the Class C2 playoffs were beat 51-7 by Crofton. However, the Bison actually enjoyed a pretty solid 2016 campaign. The team averaged 33 points per game and won five straight before losing the regular season finale. This year, Central City returns five starters on offense, seven on defense and plenty of upperclassmen, meaning experience will likely be a strength. “We return a good amount of experience on both sides of the ball, many of which got more playing time as the year went on,” head coach Troy Huebert said. “Replacing a talented class that included three linemen with multiple games of starting experience will be a challenge, but it’s exciting to see the young guys step up as they compete for those spots.” One of the guys Huebert hopes to see step up is Dale Jones, a senior who has started his whole career TEAM FACTS at defensive back, but will add quarterback to his duties in 2017. Coach Huebert is confident that Jones will get the job done. “Dale is our leader and a flat-out football player,” Huebert said. “He will be an outstanding dual threat quarterback.” Heubert also said that Jones will be the team’s first two-time captain. Luckily, Jones won’t be pressured to carry the entire load on offense. Surrounding him will be an experienced and talented group of guys who can help make the Bison offense dangerous. Seniors Tucker Schneiderheinz and Cam Sciuga, who led the team with 545 rushing yards last season, will head up the ground attack. When he drops back, three-year starter Mike Murray and the team’s 2016 reception leader, Ethan DeBoer, give Jones solid targets to throw to. Add four senior offensive linemen, two who started last year, and two juniors who will likely battle for the fifth spot on the line, and Jones has the tools to lead a potentially potent offense for the Bison. 2017 SCHEDULE 8/25 Centennial 9/1 Logan View 9/8 @ Battle Creek 9/15 @ Hastings St. Cecilia 9/22 Centura 9/29 @ Twin River 10/6 Sutton 10/13 @ Arcadia-Loup City 10/20 St. Paul line this year,” Huebert said. “A returning two-way starter, Noah is an explosive player with a nose for the ball on defense.” And leadership, like what Carlson offers, is what Huebert says can be one of the biggest reasons for any success the team has in 2017. “Our senior class is a motivated bunch who get after it and love the weight room,” Huebert said. “Leadership is a strength of this group and their ability to push the younger kids this offseason will be a big factor in our development.” If some of those younger players are able to step up and contribute alongside the upperclassmen, the Bison could be a team to watch during the upcoming season.
