BROKEN BOWINDIANS
By: Chelsea Croft
The past decade had been a
series of good, average, and
not so good seasons for the
Broken Bow Indians, and
head coach Mike Garner has
endured it all.
After losing a number of
players to graduation, as well
as most of their guys up front,
the Indians only have eight
returning starters.
“We have some good skill
players. Our two returners
on the line will be solid kids
to build around. We will be
very young; over half of our
team will be either freshman
or sophomores. We need to get
a starting O-Line established
early and develop depth,
because with our schedule,
there’s bound to be an injury
at some point,” Garner said.
With all of Broken Bow’s
returning starters playing
multiple positions, depth is
a main point of focus if they
want to earn the school’s first
state football championship.
The list of positions that need
to be filled is long, ranging
TEAM FACTS
from running and fullback to
linebacker and defensive end.
However, Garner is optimistic
he can fill the holes.
“There are some really good
athletes. Kevin Linn and
Tanner Linn (no relation),
Mason McMeen, and Josh
Harvey all played extensively
on the varsity basketball
team,” Garner said. “Brooks,
Drake, Cole Ulmer, and
Spencer Gaffney all qualified
for state in wrestling. Tycen
Marten and Grayson Garey
have a legitimate shot at
qualifying for state track.”
But it’s a rebuilding year for
the Indians as they form their
new offensive and defensive
cores.
An area they need to address
from last season is allowing
more rushing yards than
they put up per game. In
2016, Broken Bow gave up an
average of 217 rushing yards
a game and only gained an
average of 148 yards on the
ground. That may present a
challenge for the young team
Garner is forming for 2017.
2017 SCHEDULE
8/25 @ Ord
9/1 @ Chase County
9/8 Chadron
9/15 @ Grand Island Central Catholic
9/22 @ Minden
9/29 Gothenburg
10/6 Ogallala
10/13 @ Cozad
10/20 Kearney Catholic
again against Ord this year,
the Indians are hoping to come
out on top this time around.
In fact, they have the same
schedule as they did last year,
in the exact same order of
opponents. If Broken Bow can
structure this new team, they
can turn last year’s 2-6 record
into a winning season.
