Depth may pose some challenges
for the Dukes this fall, but there
is no shortage of talent on York’s
2017 roster. Six starters on offense
and seven on defense will return,
and the caliber of athletes is more
than enough to make up for the
lack of depth.
Head coach Glen Snodgrass enters
his seventh season with the team,
posting a 42-22 overall record
with the Dukes. Snodgrass’ Dukes
finished with a 7-3 record last
season, falling to Aurora 24-7 in
the first round of the playoffs.
Three first-team all-state selections
will grace the roster, including
Masry Mapieu (6’4” 305 lbs), who
has proven to be one of the top
players in Class B. The senior
defensive tackle recorded 42
tackles his junior year, 16 of which
were solo tackles. The defensive
machine committed to Nebraska,
turning down offers from Iowa,
Iowa State and UCLA. The twoyear
letterwinner will see time at
both tackle and defensive tackle.
Snodgrass said the senior has off
the charts potential.
“Masry has incredible size and
power,” he said. “He has the

ability to dominate two A-gaps
and demands a double and triple
team on every play.”
Another senior guaranteed to pose
challenges for opposing teams
on both sides of the ball is Simon
Otte (6’2” 185 lbs). With over 1,200
yards rushing as a junior and
120 tackles on defense, Otte has
proved his versatility.
“Simon will be one of the best
players in Class B,” Snodgrass
said. “Simon’s instincts,
toughness, speed and versatility
make him a top notch player.”
Otte was second team all-
Nebraska and first team allstate
Class B. He will see time
at running back, linebacker and
safety.
Versatility couldn’t be truer for
Snodgrass’ son Garrett (6’3”
215 lbs), who will get reps at
quarterback, linebacker, tight end
and wide receiver. The junior who
recorded over 500 yards receiving
and over 200 yards rushing is
getting attention from FCS and
FBS teams.
“Garrett is bigger, stronger, and
much faster than he was a year
ago,” Snodgrass said. “He will be
playing all over our offense.”
Joining Snodgrass on offense will
be wide receivers Tyler Cast and
Brady Danielson. Cast led Class
B in interceptions last season, and
will see time on the other side
of the ball at safety. Danielson
is getting attention from FCS
schools. In addition to receiver, the
junior will also play cornerback.

all-state potential with his great
hands and his ability to knock
down his side of the field.
All-state punter Mayson Conner
will be back for his senior season.
The wide receiver/safety broke
the school record for the longest
punt and punting average at 42.
Despite their loaded arsenal,
the Duke’s schedule won’t be
easy with a road game against
defending state champion Elkhorn
South.
The Dukes have made a playoff
appearance each of the last five
years, and hope their versatility
and talent will put them in
contention for York’s first state
championship in school history.
