WEST HOLTHUSKIES
By: Josh Skluzacek
The West Holt Huskies seem
primed for another strong
season.
In 2016, Steve Neptune’s squad
went 5-3 in the regular season,
picking up a first-round win
in the playoffs over Dundy
County-Stratton before losing in
the second round to Chambers/
Wheeler Central/Ewing.
This season, the Huskies should
be a little more prepared, as
they’ve now experienced a
season in Class D1 after making
the move from Class C2 the
previous year. The team returns
senior starters at quarterback
(Bryce Kerkman), wide receiver
(Shayden Neptune) and running
back (Mason Hale), with
Kerkman and Hale also leading
the charge on the defensive side
of the ball.
Coach Neptune said the
returning skill players and
bigger lineman have the team in
a good position for a successful
season. However, he noted the
team will need a little luck and
limited injuries, like most, to stay
on track throughout the year.
Offensively, the Huskies use
multiple formations, but rely
heavily on their running game.
The team averaged more
than 200 yards per game on
the ground last season, while
passing for just shy of 100 per
game.
Defensively, the team uses a 2-3
formation, and gave up almost
identical numbers, on average,
as their offense put up.
Still, with a year of experience
in the class, the number of
returning starters, and the
improvement the team has
shown, Neptune has reason
to feel good about West Holt’s
upcoming season.
As far as challenges, Neptune
wants to see his team get better
at adjusting to what is thrown at
them each week.
“Playing better defense and
adjusting quicker to the different
types of offense we see week in
and week out,” Neptune said.
The Huskies will open the
season at home on Aug. 25
