SUTTONMUSTANGS PROPANE - GAS - DIESEL - FERTILIZER - GRAIN - FLATBED HAULING By: TJ Eck Sutton head coach Steve Ramer is no stranger to success. In his seven years leading the Mustangs, he has posted a 53- 20 record while leading the program to the playoffs in each season. Ramer’s 2017 squad should again contend for a postseason berth in Class C2, as Sutton brings back a large number of starters on both sides of the ball from a team that went 6-4 last season. The Mustangs return two players with experience at the quarterback position in junior Jordan Davis (6’1” 185 lbs) and senior Chandler Stone (5’11” 170 lbs). Last season’s leading rusher, Garrett Leach, has moved on, but talent still remains in the backfield. Junior Brett Simonsen dealt with injury in 2016 but still managed to rush for 339 yards on just 42 carries (8.1 avg) and score two touchdowns. Fellow junior James Griess (34 Att, 307 yards, 5 TD) and senior fullback Spencer Sanko (19 Att, 113 yards) give the Mustangs options for running the ball. Sutton features a rush-heavy attack, but senior wide receiver Nathan Hohensee is a player to watch. Hohensee hauled in 15 catches for 362 yards (24.1 avg) and two touchdowns last fall. Seniors Treygan Rafert (6’3” 220 lbs) and Sam Nuss (6’2” 190 lbs) anchor the offensive line. Defensively, Sutton’s strength comes at the linebacker position. Five players with starting experience are back for the Mustangs, led by Griess (88 total tackles), and fellow juniors Cameron Kleinschmidt (84 total tackles) and Jacob Rogers (62 total tackles). Rafert (42 total tackles) provides experience along the defensive line. Hohensee is a two-way player who can do it all for the Mustangs. He registered 59 tackles and picked off five passes from the defensive back position in 2016. Sutton has the luxury of being an experienced, but still a young team in 2017. The Mustangs have six starters back on offense and seven on defense but just five seniors are expected to see significant time. However, the junior class is a talented bunch 2017 SCHEDULE 8/25 Doniphan-Trumbull 9/1 @ Malcolm 9/8 Hastings St. Cecilia 9/15 @ Sandy Creek 9/22 Shelby-Rising City 9/29 @ Cross County 10/6 @ Central City 10/13 Fillmore Central 10/20 @ Centennial with players like Simonsen, Rogers, and Griess in the mix.
