SUPERIORWILDCATS By: Joe Musso The Superior Wildcats are coming off of a 5-3 record in 2016, but head coach Brandon Seigel and company aren’t satisfied with the way the season ended. The Wildcats strung together a four-game winning streak in the middle of the season but stumbled to a 1-2 finish. Nonetheless, 2016 was a huge improvement from their 1-8 showing a year prior. Seigel hopes to build more momentum for the program in 2017. This will be Seigel’s fourth season as head coach of the Wildcats, and the Superior staff will have their work cut out for them. The Wildcats graduated 16 of 22 starters. Seigel knows the task won’t be easy. “After graduating eight seniors from last season’s team, we are looking to rebuild our varsity roster,” he said. “We have quality returning skill players, our challenge will be rebuilding our offensive and defensive lines, as well as finding a quarterback to lead the offensive side of the ball.” Those quality position players are highlighted by senior running back Trey Fierstein. Fierstein racked up 383 yards on just 55 carries in 2016. The talented tailback also accounted for six touchdowns. After playing second fiddle in his junior season, Fierstein is looking forward to the lion’s share of the touches in 2017. “Trey is an explosive running back with the ability to carry a team with his talent,” Seigel said. “He will be a crucial part of our offense this season.” The Wildcats will lean on the two-headed monster of Fierstein and Chase Morris. Morris provides the thunder to Fierstein’s lightning. Morris had three touchdowns of his own in 2016 and will take on a bigger workload this season. “Chase is a tough running kid who’s physicality is something we will try to build off of on both sides of the ball,” Seigel said. Morris had 41 tackles at the 2017 SCHEDULE 8/25 Tri County 9/1 Ravenna 9/8 @ Diller-Odell 9/22 @ Franklin 9/29 McCool Junction 10/6 @ Heartland 10/13 Kenesaw 10/20 @ Thayer Central linebacker position last season.
