Aviation and the Global Atmosphere
IS92a scenario, aviation's share of global CO 2 emissions rises from its current value of 2.1% to a level of 3.8% in 2025 and 6.8% in 2050. Across all scenarios,
aviation's share of global CO 2 emissions ranges between 3.3 and 10% in 2025 and between 5.6 and 17.6% in 2050. These scenarios imply that aviation may become
a significant contributor to global CO 2 emissions.
Figure 9-22 shows the NO x emissions scenarios; these scenarios incorporate the effects of fuel efficiency improvements as well as changes in EI(NO x ). For the base-
demand IS92a scenario, NO x emissions rise sharply from almost 2 Tg (as NO 2 ) in 1990 to 7.9 Tg in 2050. Because total NO x emissions are reduced as a result of fuel
efficiency improvements and EI(NO x ) reduction, technological improvement can compensate for a greater fraction of demand growth than in the case of CO 2
emissions.
Table 9-19 presents an excerpt of EDF model results of traffic demand, fuel burned, and emissions of CO 2 and NO x through the year 2050 for the several sets of
assumptions. The three-letter designators for the EDF scenarios (e.g., Eab, Eeh) are used throughout this report.
