From an environmental viewpoint, efficiency of transportation ("mobility efficiency") can be described as <strong>the</strong> fuel required to transport one person over a distance of 1<br />

kilometer-<strong>the</strong> energy required per passenger-km. Comparison of freight hauling by aircraft to o<strong>the</strong>r modes of freight transportation is more complex because of<br />

differences in modes, such as weight restrictions. If various restrictions to <strong>the</strong> analysis are assumed <strong>and</strong> stated, freight may be compared on <strong>the</strong> basis of energy use<br />

per tonne-km. Because of <strong>the</strong>se complexities <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> requirements of various assumptions, this chapter concentrates on comparisons of passenger mobility.<br />
