PERIODIC SERVICE AND INSPECTION<br />

SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE<br />

Follow a regularscheduleof inspection and servicing.<br />

Make a good visual check before, while, and after<br />

alternator is operating; look for loose or broken leads<br />

and bad connections.<br />

GEAR BOX LUBRICATION<br />

Use only SAE 90 EP multi-purpose gear lubricant.<br />

Drain the gear box after the first 100 hours of<br />

operation and refill with fresh lubricant of, the<br />

recommended grade. Repeat this procedure each<br />

year thereafter, or every 250 hours of operation,<br />

whichever occurs first. Maintain the proper oil level<br />

between changes.<br />

Remove oil fill plug at top of thecaseand oil level plug<br />

from the face of the gear case, Figure 43. Fill case<br />

until oil flows from the oil level plug hole. Gear box<br />

holds 1 pint (0.47 litre) U.S. measure. Replace both<br />

plugs.<br />

PTO SHAFT LUBRICATION<br />

Grease the universal joints and telescoping shafts on<br />

the PTO shaft at least every25 operating hours. Under<br />

adverse conditions, grease the joints as required,<br />

possibly every 4 to 8 hours.<br />

WARNING<br />

Never operate the alternator with the protective<br />

guards removed from the PTO shaft Permal<br />

injury or death may othemise result.<br />

BEARINGS<br />

The ball-type bearing on the cover end is double<br />

sealed and lubricated for life. If this bearing becomes<br />

noisy, worn, or otherwise defective, replace it. Re-<br />

move the old bearing with a gear puller and drive or<br />

press new ones into place. The bearing on the gear<br />

box end is lubricated by the gear box lubricant (SAE<br />

90 EP). For disassembly and repair see Alternator<br />
