EXCLUSIVE Interview With Multi-Platinum Award
Winning Composer / Sound Designer / Mixer
Engineer Joel Evenden
Joel Evenden
Joel is a multi-platinum winning engineer and producer with scores of legendary artists
including Eric Clapton, Lara Fabian, Rod Stewart, Craig Armstrong, Lily Allen, B.B. King, and
Norman Jay, just to name a few.
Growing up in London during the influential rock scene of the 90’s, Joel began his musical
career as a guitarist with a keen interest in music production. He eventually connected with
Olympic Studios, where he has become the respected world-class producer, mixer, and
recording engineer he is today.
When the studio was closed/sold he started getting more into music for commercials and
movies…
We were lucky enough to get the chance to talk to him. Check out his answers to our
questions below!
TMN Magazine | INTERVIEW
How did you get started in the music and entertainment industry?
When I was a kid I got really into computers, that was my hobby, but one day I went to a friends house to borrow a
video, remember those? He had this white Strat copy, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever, I pretty much ran
home to sell my computer to buy one. For the next 10 years, I played guitar any way I could, wedding bands, student
bands, writing songs, I remember using a 4 track tape recorder to make demos, and as computers began to get more
capable I started using those.
You started to work at the famous Olympic Studios how and why did that come about?
I was at music college in Brighton, I was lucky in that a family friend had a contact at Olympic, I asked if I could do
some work experience and rather than the usual tea boy thing that usually happened, they set me up with a job
transferring old cassette demo tapes onto hard disk, I was given hundreds of recordings! İt took all my spare time
from college to get through it, months I think! but everyone got used to me being around and started asking me to
help with other things, so I naturally became part of the team.
Your status is mix engineer/producer, songwriter; that’s a full package; However, what’s your preference,
working in your studio (engineering, producing and mixing tracks for release) or getting out there with Music
composition for Film & Video?
Right now I think the variety is my preference, I learn things working on film and tv that I find apply to mixing
music, and vica versa, for example recording and mixing voice overs for adverts has affected my approach to
preparing singers vocals before we get mixing, and sound design has helped me with atmospheric elements in a
song, you never ever stop learning with this stuff.
What could great-sounding recording do for an artist’s career?
The song is, of course, the most important thing, no doubt about it, a great sounding recording is what frames it and
makes it presentable, so that’s really where production comes in, and your job is helping an artist get their specific
idea out of their own head and into a format that everyone can enjoy.
You’ve had an incredible career so far, what are the highlights?
I think that first period between being a student and actually become part of the Olympic family was very special, I
was meeting all these amazing people, it was really like a dream come true.
I remember as a studio assistant I’d watch the big boys mixing on the SSL consoles, you had to stay out of the way
really, but I’d pick up on some things, one day I was assisting John Leckie on a mix, as I peered over the edge of the
console in Studio 2 he looked at me and said “There’s no point watching me, you can only learn this by doing it
yourself!”
Then there were always those magical moments during recording sessions when the orchestra transformed a
chorus, or a fantastic guitar solo came out of nowhere, but really the best thing is being able to make friends and
work and learn from so many different talented people from all over the world.
You’ve worked with artists such as Eric Clapton, Lara Fabian, Rod Stewart… Is it difficult to deal with superstars?
Not at all, it’s usually a pleasure, I mean you need to be very well prepared, and by that I mean pretty much prepared
for anything! and you need to be able to judge people’s moods, but all of the real pros I know are confident in their
own ability and that of their team, also it’s usually well budgeted and well organised, so you end up living in a bit of
an artist focused bubble for a while but it’s usually a lot of fun and a rewarding experience.
What is the centerpiece of your studio at the moment?
My own studio is based around a Pro Tools HD rig hooked up to my SSL X-Desk which is a fantastic summing mixer
and center section, I’d hate to be without it, combined with a few bits of outboard it really gives me a great analog
sound and a speedy digital workflow.
Any message you want to give to your fans? Or offer any services or offers of collaboration with others?
Always happy to hear about interesting projects so feel free to get in touch via my website
LIGHTWORKER: AMMOYE’S RADIANT MELTING -
POT REGGAE RETURNS ON THE LIGHT
Through struggles and
setbacks, Jamaican-Canadian
singer and songwriter Ammoye
always heard a voice inside,
reminding her of her worth.
Now, she’s become that voice,
spreading a message of uplift,
love, and spirit to the world on
The Light, the 3x Juno
Nominated latest album (out
June 29, 2017).
Intuition led her to a spiritual awakening several
years ago, and took her back to her native
Jamaica to seek out collaborators and producers
for her songs. Ammoye tapped both beloved
reggae elder statesmen like Sly Dunbar and
Donovan Germain and fresh newcomers like the
funky Kingston producer duo Natural High
Music. Drawing on the sounds she grew up with
(gospel, along with roots reggae) and those she
heard as young woman in Toronto, The Light also
embraces electro-pop moments (“Are You
Ready?”) and R&B (“Salvation-Redemption”).
“I use my own experience to push my writing. My
music has a message of love,” says Ammoye. “I
want to inspire women and girls to find that
sense of love and light within themselves, not
outside themselves. I want to share the messages
I have gotten, the healing I’ve received. I hope
people find that in the music.”
“I call myself a soul rebel,” a theme she explores
on the album’s song of the same title. “It’s about
following your soul path, the path of your higher
self. This is especially important for black
women, who are told they are less than, that they
don’t matter. I follow my inner voice, my
intuition.”
HOT
Ammoye was raised by her grandmother in
Jamaica, and her strength and resilience inspire
the young musician to this day. She grew up
singing at church, later starting a gospel group
once she came to Canada, Sisters in Christ.
photo: Antonio Glam
Yet she also organized fellow artists into a
collective and collaborated broadly in her
new home. Her sound blended the
soulfulness of Jamaica with the edge of drum
& bass, the sinewy grooves of R&B. She sang
with Michael Buble, with the rock band the
Arkells. She won fans and awards, including
several nods from the Junos, Canada’s
answer to the Grammys.
In these divisive, troubling times, Ammoye’s
music shines with an alternative, one forged
equally on Jamaica and in Toronto’s melting
pot. “There’s a lot of dark energy right now,
and the powers that be have a lot to do with
that. I feel I’m a lightworker,” reflects
Ammoye. “I want to share the voice in my
heart, and what that means for me is always
holding the light wherever I go. It’s about
love, unity consciousness, empowerment and
positiveness. The light represents me, and I
rise up to that.”
INTRODUCING
RYAN ATKINS “DON’T ASK”
Ryan Atkins Releases R&B Breakup Song, “Don’t Ask”
It’s that breaking point of a relationship where you are just over it
when it is beyond repair. Soulful R&B singer, Ryan Atkins,
approaches the subject with such grace on her new single “Don’t
Ask”. As in don’t ask me where I’m going, don’t ask me where I’ve
been, because it’s not your business anymore.
“Don’t Ask” allows us to follow her as she celebrates her new-found
freedom away from a low-down cheating man. Though their living
situation is still very messy, the friction makes for a compelling
story that is masterfully executed by Ryan! The song shows a light
at the end of the tunnel as Ryan Atkins looks forward to brighter
days as an independent woman!
THE 3 HEADS - 'GENIUS'
THE 3 HEADS have a sound
that’s difficult to pin down.
In one aspect, it’s because
they continued to change on
their last album, GENIUS,
and in another it’s because all
3 members play with a fluid
nature. Snaking around each
other’s parts as well as the
parameters of the genres
they straddle so well, there’s
a delicate balance at work
that requires them to leave
an uncertain air of
anticipation at all times.
The 3 Heads are an acoustic rock/pop
group that focuses its collective talent on
straightforward songwriting. As you will
hear, or have already heard, all of the
songs vary in style and range from
power-pop songs to mid-tempo grooves
to soulful mellow ballads. The one
constant that resonates throughout both
their CD and live shows is their use of
vocal melodies and harmonies that
always seem to carry an undeniable hook,
regardless of what “style” of song it is.
Also, each song’s simple structuring and
lyrical rhythm possesses a unique and yet
familiar sound for the listener. This
quality is what makes the music both easy
to initially listen to and addictive as one
discovers the many different sounds of
The 3 Heads.
INCANTATION FOR HOPE: SONIA AIMY’S PASSION FOR
AFROPOP, JAZZ, AND A BETTER FUTURE LIGHT UP HER
NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT, NIGERIAN SPIRIT
T
he dream wouldn’t leave singer Sonia Aimy alone. She was in a family
compound, teaching young people to sing and dance. Whenever their
movements and sounds reached the right place, when their trance went deep
enough, the ground beneath their feet would burst into flame, a moment she
recounts in the song “Voices of Orisa.”
“I shared this idea with [Nobel Prize-winning playwright] Wole Soyinka,”
explains Aimy. “He told me not to be afraid of the message. I knew I had to
sing it.”
This conviction and vision animate Nigerian Spirit (release date: June 16,
2017), the resulting blend of a childhood in Nigeria, a busy career in jazz and
theater in Italy, and a new life in Ontario, where in addition to her
performing career, she is launching a new line of jewelry and apparel
inspired by her travels. Aimy reflects on her heritage, using the Italian
penchant for romantic metaphor and a globetrotting sonic palette to express
her hopes for her native land and for Africa as a whole.
Despite dire situations, the struggles she pays tribute to in pieces like “A
Dream for Somalia,” Aimy paints a portrait on Spirit designed to move and
inspire, with interlocking grooves and jazz flair, in multiple languages. Its
part of what Aimy feels is the heart of Nigerian culture. “No matter the
situation, we’re all responsive people. The poorest person will still manage to
make you laugh. You have to try to tell the story in a positive way. It may be
dramatic, but you will still laugh because of the narrative style. That’s the key.
That’s the thread that draws it all together.”
Aimy grew up steeped in professional music and dance, as her mother was a
performer in a prominent cultural group in Benin City, Aimy’s hometown in
Nigeria. She would watch her mother rehearse, learning the songs and
movements. She became the youngest chorister in the local Catholic church
choir, opening the world of notated Western music. “My music now is a
combination of the experience with gospel music, as well as the traditional
music of my people and my formal training,” explains Aimy, a sound evident
on songs like “Ase.” “In Edo music, you have room for improvisation. There
are lots of runs, call, and response, solos. It’s very powerful.”
This combination’s power dawned on Aimy once she arrived in Torino, Italy
at music school. A teacher turned her on to the work of Mahalia Jackson,
which in turn led to a serious interest in jazz. “When I first went to the school
and was told my vocal style was more jazzy, that studying that style would
help me, I was skeptical,” she recalls. “Then I listened to Mahalia Jackson.
Sometimes I’d really feel myself through her. I thought this could be me. I’d
think of the songs I sang back home. I really related to the spirit of her work,
though I didn’t know that much about African-American history. This
convinced me to study jazz.”
29
Yet Italy also left its mark on the singer and songwriter. “The Italian feel
in my music lies in metaphor. How metaphorically they write about love
and life; it’s influenced me a lot,” muses Aimy. “They have a way of
writing about things metaphorically, not directly.”
Aimy’s career in Italy eventually centered on the theater, and she found
herself touring relentlessly with theater companies, as well as creating
her own works for the stage. On the road, she would often jot down small
ideas, snatches of melody that she later developed into full-fledged
songs. One, a little riff with syllables Aimy turned into “Chotima,” had
more meaning than Aimy expected. An artist friend originally from
Gabon came to visit and heard Aimy sing a line. To Aimy’s shock, she
exclaimed: “You’re singing in my language! This is my language!” They
worked together on lyrics, and the song to a soulmate was born.
Yet for all the positive emotion and metaphorical musings, Nigerian
Spirit flows directly from Aimy’s concern and rage at what she sees in
her homeland, in Africa, in the world. “This album draws on my anger
about what’s happened in Africa,” says Aimy. “It captures my rage about
Boko Haram, about the war in places like Somalia. Ever since I started my
career, I rarely had a break from the stage, from touring, from
networking. When I did, I connected more to people, to the news, to the
world and these crises. I started to feel such anger.”
She saw what befell her fellow Africans on the waters of the
Mediterranean and wrote “Lampedusa,” a tribute to those drowned at sea
as they tried to reach Italy and a better life in Europe. Her anger resolves
into potent calls to move forward, calls her fans from across the
continent have heard. When Aimy performed “A Dream for Somalia” as
part of a community event in Toronto, many in the audience wanted to
hear it in their own language. They translated the words for the singer,
and she learned to sing them.
What remains the same, regardless of place or language, is the spirit, the
that brings something new into the world.”
PREGNANCY RUMORS,
CONFUSES TWITTER
USERS
Is Halle Berry pregnant?
That’s the question many people are asking
after the 50-year-old actress posed
Saturday at the 16th annual Chrysalis
Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles.
Berry, dressed in a sequin-covered dress,
silver jacket and matching strappy heels,
posed for photographers with her hands on
and around her stomach.
Twitter users quickly reacted to the photos,
questioning whether the actress is
pregnant and who the father of the child
might be.
A representative for Berry told Page Six
Monday that the actress is not expecting.
“It is completely untrue. She is not
pregnant,” the rep said.
MANCHESTER’
BENEFIT CONCERT
ARIANA GRANDE RETURNS TO
MANCHESTER TO HONOR VICTIMS WITH
BENEFIT
Ariana Grande paid tribute to the city of
Manchester, England, with an energetic, allstar
concert that raised millions for victims
of a suicide bombing that tore through her
last performance in the city nearly two
weeks ago.
Grande was emotional and teary-eyed
throughout the One Love Manchester
concert Sunday, which the British Red Cross
said it raised more than £10 million ($13
million) for the We Love Manchester
Emergency Fund, created for those affected
by the attack at Grande's May 22 show.
She closed the three-hour-plus event with a
cover of "Over the Rainbow," crying onstage
at the song's end as the audience cheered
her on.
"Manchester, I love you with all of my heart,"
Grande said before the performance, and
just after singing "One Last Time" with Miley
Cyrus, Pharrell and more of the show's
performers standing behind her in
solidarity.
Grande enlisted some of music's biggest
names for the benefit concert, including
Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Liam
Gallagher.
The One Love Manchester concert aired
across the globe. Other performers included
Little Mix, Niall Horan, Imogen Heap and
Victoria Monet.
COVER STORY
SINGER
SONGWRITER
by
Jeremiah Foster
Emine SARI is an an Awards
winning Turkish musician that
has a very colorful and
beautiful life story. She began
to teach herself the piano and
study foreign languages as a
young child because she loved
music from different cultures
and regions of the world.
What makes Emine different
from other artists is the fact
that she recruits an arsenal of
songwriters and only performs
her own compositions.
"Her ability to sing and write in six different languages
makes her very versatile and a global star."
-Bravestar Entertainment
Singer/songwriter Emine SARI has worked hard to try and
fulfill her dream of becoming an internationally recognized
artist. She has already become a huge success in Japan. After
moving to the country, due to health issues, and entering on
the Japanese equivalent of American Idol and was the only
foreign singer to make it all the way to the finals.
Emine is no ordinary singer-songwriter. Her style may be hard
to pin down in genre or type.
Since her debut was released in 2008, Emine has won and been
nominated for countless awards.
38
Emine Sari is for real. Not just another
pretty face. She is one talented woman.
She tells a story with every song, and
she tells it in many languages too!
Emine’s songs are a mix of jazz, blues,
and pop, with roots ethnic
interpretations, also included in her
unusual repertoire.
Most people experience a wide range
of emotions in their lives, and it is
exciting, moving and engaging to
encounter songs that mirror their
feelings. Emine Sari has the sensibility
and the musical talent to deliver these
songs. Her music releases evidence the
continuing broadening of the
emotional range that her voice can
convey.
COVER STORY
Jazz has always combined the
capacities for a deep appreciation of
the past and openness to new
directions. Emine Sari has
captured those qualities
on “Who Are You”.
TMN MAGAZINE
You can very rarely go wrong with Emine Sari. On her offerings, you get her smooth, yet smoky and sultry vocals.
You get her wise playing; practically every ingredient needed for Magic is here and magic is indeed what you get.
Not much else needs to be said. Established fans will already know what she’s about and I guess all interested
parties need know is that if you’re looking for a relaxing but inspirational vocal pop-jazz or even ethnic
performance, you need to look no further. You might also want to check out some of her other recordings like
“Why” (Russian), “Welcome To Bursa” (Arabic), “Seni Ozmelek” (Turkish) or “I Changed My Mind” all of which I
think are brilliant.
"Music that reaches across borders!"
- Entertainment Magazine
But it’s on the cover of Radiohead’s “Creep”
and on “Who Are You” that Emine Sari displays
her jazzy influences. She continues to stay
among the top female vocalists performing
today, with her understated elegance of
phrasing, her piano playing, and her sapient
interpretation of the music she loves.
Emine’s voice is lush and her
arrangements are superb. A singer
knows, it’s all in the delivery, and
Emine can really deliver her lyrics
with passion. She is a must for anyone
who loves easy listening music. For
me, Emine’s musical catalog has got
the perfect balance of sweet songs and
upbeat rhythms and it all just flows.
There’s nothing better than a
collection of songs that flows
effortlessly.
Besides her smooth and sultry voice,
her technical ability on piano
surpasses many female players out
there, and her groove within the
different song arrangements she
performs on, is always in the pocket.
She displays more and more
versatility with every recording she
releases. And “Who Are You” is no
exception to the rule.
INTERVIEW
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH
EMINE SARI
We were quite impressed with her unique blend of pop,
jazz and swing. And her jazzy pop rendition of
Radiohead’s “Creep” was easily one of the most original
covers we’d ever heard. Naturally, we were curious
about this fascinating artist and wanted to know more.
And so Jeremiah Foster immediately set about
interviewing her…

What motivates you in your career?
I've always been motivated by my family.
Without them, I'm nothing. One thing that
I say to myself is "be good all the time".
I motivate myself by saying I can always
improve, which actually makes a
difference.
I always want to be number 1. I always say
to myself that I can't afford to fail.
I understand that you speak six different languages. Do you find
it easy to learn new languages or is it difficult? I would think you
must have a natural gift for learning languages to be able to
speak that many.
You need to trust that your brain will learn. As long as you are
motivated enough and enjoy what you are doing, you will succeed.
Just don’t expect to be fluent in any language over night. It takes
time, but it is all worth it.
Music and singing have made a huge difference in my language
learning progress! Learning the lyrics of a song helps you expand
your vocabulary and teach you some slang/typical phrases.
Singing can actually help you reduce your foreign-sounding
accent! I think music is a great way to learn a language – it doesn’t
feel like work at all.
Have you written songs in all of the languages that you know?
Yes, sure. I started to learn foreign languages for my desire to sing
and write foreign songs…
I think, that when you’re writing in a language you don’t
ordinarily speak, you’re more likely to find creative ways of
aligning the words. It is just so much easier for me to make
something make sense in English or Russian, for example.
43
How did you get the idea to do a jazz cover version of “Creep” by
Radiohead?
I fell in love with Radiohead’s “Creep” the first time I heard it!
What is your favorite Radiohead album?
I love them all. Except for Pablo Honey, I guess. But OK Computer is
the one I probably go back to the most.
Who is your favorite artist?
I like to take a few styles and smash them together to create my own
sound, with inspiration coming from Amy Winehouse songs, Tom
Jones energy, Celine Dion vocals, Bonnie Tylor vibes... There's just
too many of them!
Whose idea was it to open the lyric video for “Who Are You” with
your social networking sites and Tweets?
My idea:)
How widely used are social networking sites in general in Turkey?
Many Turkish people own computers, and most couldn’t imagine
being without one. Also, younger people (age 16-34) now account of
for the largest growth sector for tablet computers as well.
What are the most popular social networking sites in Turkey?
Instagram and Twitter seem to be the most popular microblogging
services in Turkey. Facebook, a very popular social networking Web
site also YouTube. We don’t have other sites like Vkontakte or
Livejournal in Russia or Mixi in Japan.
"I make music to make people happy!
When I record music I always think
about my fans. I appreciate the
positive responses from my fans."
Have you released any songs in Turkish? If not, do you have any
plans to do so?
Yes, I have some songs I released before and I will include one
Turkish song to my next album too!
You released your single, “Who Are You,” and the video did very
well. When will you be releasing new songs? Are you recording a
full-length album? Tell us about your upcoming music.
I’ll be releasing a new single in a few months and we keep working
on finishing up the songs for NOTHING BUT YOU new album to be
released next year! We are working on new CD with great producers
from UK and Turkey and we are planning to record at The Abbey
Road Studios in the UK.
Ever thought in your career to give up
music?
The way I am going is stony and difficult
(especially as a woman)!There are a lot
of highs and lows and I am always
asking the questions: "Am I good
enough? Am I pretty enough? Am I too
old?" and all the other things.
Now I am getting closer to my
dreams,but sometimes slower than I
would like!! But I NEVER think that is
going to stop me. Music will always be a
driving force in my life...I will never
give up!
It's true that when you feel you should
give up, it would be the worst thing you
could do!
"If you had the chance to listen to my
music you can understand that I don't
write my songs in just one style.
Sometimes it's rock (this time I want to
be loud and I want people to hear me),
sometimes pop (this time I try to
explain maby one of my experience)
and sometime it's kind of blues/ jazz/
soul (my last emotions about my life)."
"Music is my heart, my therapy, my release, my
passion, and connected to my parents, who sadly are
no longer with me! If I didn't have the music, I
would not be here right now. It helped me out during
a hard time. I love to show people new songs because
it truly becomes a part of their life. If you listen to
my music, you can see me: you can see my
heartbreaks, my happiness, my inside jokes, my
memories, the people that I love... So I don't like to
talk about who I am, you can understand all from
and lyrics, with that unique mixture of the popular pop, rock and
alternative genres. Lars Erik Schjerpen, Andre Myhren and Vidar
Braun, have certainly done a good job in joining up as a band as
the result can be heard and felt in their great songs.
Since their last single, they have been working hard on other
songs as well as a number of performances, and they are now
going to release their latest and one of the most powerful singles
yet, ‘Be There’.
‘Be There’ has a romantic message which is being delivered in a
rather haunting way since as soon as you hear the song you are
bound to keep singing along with it as it has that very special and
unique imprint on one’s mind, and ear. With a very good sound
from the musical element, which blends really well with the voice
of the main singer, this song is one of those songs that you will
want to hear over and over again. The three members of the band
have definitely managed to do a great job in both the vocals and
the music, and part of the allure of this song lies in their passion
for acoustic music which is impeccably combined with the pop
genre.
The music video for ‘Be There’ is available on YouTube as well
as on the website for Harmony Drive fans to listen to. The
song will also be made available for followers of the band on
social media platforms. The video was produced by Andre
Myhren and Vlad Pullarca.
The music video was filmed in beautiful locations in Norway
and in Subic bay in the Philippines, featuring the members of
the band and surfer/model/tv host Mona Lisa Neuboeck who
is impersonating the sweetheart of the romantic message in
this song. The song was recorded in Denver, Colorado with
the help of producer Rich Veltrop and Dave Elitch (Mars
Volta) on drums.
For those who would like to dedicate a romantic song for
their girlfriend, wife or partner, without being excessively
poetic and boring ‘Be There’ is definitely a great choice. The
words of the song are romantic, but with the vocals combined
with the acoustic and pop music, it really leaves a nice effect.
Pleasurable to listen to, and definitely very catchy, ‘Be There’
is surely going to be another hit for Harmony Drive.
EXCLUSIVE
TMN Magazine / SUMMER 2017
INTERVIEW
HARMONY DRIVE
Hailing from Norway, Harmony Drive is one of those rare bands who excel at defying all
your expectations. By taking a look at this bunch of Scandinavian metalheads, you'd expect
thundering riffs, earthquake drums and brutal vocals, but there is a twist: The guys in the
band are equally as fond of folk, indie, alt-pop and Americana, and they aren't afraid to
show their mellow side and create catchy music with integrity.
Harmony Drive's debuted in 2014 with an acclaimed album that received heavy rotation and
praise internationally, helping the band win over fans from countries as diverse as the US
and the Philippines.
Today, the band is ready to unleash a brand new single, "See You".
The song was recorded with drummer Dave Elitch, known for his work with The Mars Volta,
Juliette Lewis and more. The band also worked with legendary producer Richard J Veltrop,
who was at the helm of incredible records by Rage Against The Machine,
Tom Petty or Ozzy Osbourne, among others.
We recently spoke to Harmony Drive about the band’s music, inspirations,
and their future… Check it out below.
Tell us a bit about yourselves, Is there a story behind your band name Harmony
Drive?
Harmony Drive was formed by, Lars Erik Schjerpen (vocals/piano/guitar), Andre
Myhren (guitar), and Vidar Braun (bass/supporting vocals. We formed the band in Oslo,
Norway in 2012 after finding out that we loved to play acoustic music and jam together.
We called the band Harmony Drive since we love colorful harmonies and experimenting
with different chord structures.
How and when did you get started in the music and music industry?
We started playing together in the Norwegian metal band called Bulk in 2004. It was
very funny to play metal and we still have a passion for that music. In 2012 we felt very
natural to start a project playing more acoustic music, so we formed Harmony Drive.
How would you describe your music, unique sound to those who have yet to listen
and appreciate your creative talent?
We try to blend all our musical influences in the songs we write and make beautiful songs
that we want to listen to ourselves. Our debut album contains songs that combine
beautiful harmonies, grunge vocals, jazzy chord structures and tons of el guitars. We
recommend our music to people who like bands like Beatles, Neil Young, Beach Boys,
Alice in Chains and Steely Dan.
You’ve got a strong presence on social media, which is your favorite platform to
connect with fans? (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)
We actually suck on social medias, but we’re learning day by day. Facebook is probably
the media we know best and that's the media we connect with fans on.
50
Tell us about what you’ve got planned for the rest of 2017?
We will be launching our newest single ‘See You’. This new track will be launched on the 30th of September
along with its music video. The music video was being filmed in Denver, Colorado. We’re also shooting a new
music video in the Philippines as we speak. It's for our second new single “Be there”. “Be there” will be released
sometime later this year. We hope to play a lot of gigs in 2016 and we’re planning a lot of touring in 2017.
You work so hard and you’re clearly very passionate about your career, what’s fun for you
outside of music?
We love to travel and meet new people. We’ve been very fortunate to meet a lot of fantastic people
on our tours, so we love to travel and catch up with them.
Any message you want to give to your fans and future fans out there? Or offer any services
or offers of collaboration with others?
We would like to thank everyone that buys or stream our music. And all the people that are
supporting us! A special thanks go to all our friends in the Philippines who made it possible for us
to tour there. We’re coming back soon!
NEW MUSIC
Tattooed Mulligan Ft.
The UnderBoss – Bad Luck
by Ellen Weaver
Sean Mulligan and Fale Simitaitoko
better known as Tattooed Mulligan and
Bad Luck Fale respectively have been
mates since 2013. Initially, on Twitter,
Mulligan began talking to Fale about the
wrestling business which Fale is a huge
superstar in, applying his craft for New
Japan Pro Wresting. They would finally
meet in 2014 when Fale was back in New
Zealand for a well-deserved break from
a tour of Japan.
They kept in touch for the next
few years with Mulligan inviting Fale
down to his local town of Tauranga to
talk business and share stories. When
asked what they talked about Mulligan
said “just a whole lot of things really,
Fale was bringing New Japan Wrestling
to New Zealand for the first time ever
so we talked and shared ideas
regarding that among other things”
Fast Forward to this January Sean
released his first song called Swipe
Her, which got a lot of attention
including getting noticed by radio host
Dom Harvey of The Edge morning
show “Yea was pretty overwhelming to
be honest, especially when Dom from
the Country’s biggest radio show
invited me in for an interview”
Mulligan admitted “He’s such a cool dude, so is his wife Jay-Jay, the whole
experience of getting interview and my song being played was amazing, I’m so
grateful”
The song also got the attention of Fale who is a fan of all types of music says
Mulligan “I messaged Fale to see if he wanted to catch up for lunch afterwards as I
had an idea I wanted to put past him, well that idea turned into a project that kept
me pretty busy the last 3 plus months” Mulligan says “I had the idea of getting him
on a song called Bad Luck, basically me talking to him about bad nights out I have
had with different girls.” Mulligan goes on to say how he struggled to find a suitable
beat that would fit with the conversation verses. “that was bloody difficult, as I’m
not a singer nor is Fale so to make a beat that fits in was hard.”
Using his social media prowess Mulligan messaged a Japanese female singer that
agreed singer the chorus as long as she was not credited for it. “she’s totally shy”
laughs Mulligan “she’s a cool chick who I have known for awhile and her voice is
amazing, she was happy as to help me out.”
Listening to this song there are a few things that come to
mind firstly the beat and timing of everything comes off
nicely, the song is totally catching and lastly, there isn’t a
shadow of a doubt that Mulligan has had some BAD LUCK
with the ladies.
Nothing
But You
Release
New Single
“LIPS”
by Michele Mendez
Nothing But You has officially
released their latest single titled
“LIPS,” which is now available on
iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud,
Google Play, and more.
Nicky is the voice behind musical
project Nothing But You. She was
born and raised in Japan but moved
to the United States to pursue her
singing career. Her newest single
“LIPS” is a gorgeous ballad about
being in love with lyrics “I feel your
lips make my soul smile with yours.
I need a kiss, that kiss of yours.”
The song was written by Turkish
multi-award winning singer and
songwriter Emine SARI and
platinum award winner music
engineer Joel Evenden. It was
recorded in California and released
by Phoenix Records.
SUMMER ISSUE
“Music does not need a
different language. “LIPS”
or “LOVE” resonates in
the heartes of all
mankind.”
THE NEW SINGLE HAS BEEN
MET WITH POSITIVE
REVIEWS, AND HAS EVEN
WON BEST BLUES SONG OF
MAY 2017 AT THE AKADEMIA
AWARDS IN LOS ANGELES.
Nicky recently spoke with
SNTMag about the song’s title,
“Music does not need different
language. “LIPS” or “LOVE”
resonates in the heartes of all
mankind.”
CelebMix also had the chance to listen to “LIPS”
and just like her EP Meant to Be, we are once again
blown away with Nicky’s vocals. The single is a
smooth, easy-to-listen song with seductive lyrics
that tell of wanting to be physically close with
someone. Nicky’s sultry voice perfectly captures
the emotions of the lyrics, so much that we lose
ourselves in the song.
