Alphabet Party
Prep Students celebrated their learning
about letters, sounds and sight words with
an amazing alphabet party at the end of
last Term.
The students came dressed in a costume
beginning with the same letter as their name.
Throughout the day, they participated in a
range of activities which relied upon their
knowledge of sound-letter relationships and
sight words.
The activities included making and baking
alphabet cookies, sight word treasure hunt
and sight word “pass the parcel”. The
students had a fabulous time and it was
wonderful to acknowledge their progress in
such an exciting and eventful way.
Year 8
French
Lunch
The Year 8 French class engaged in a “make it
and eat it” French lunch on the last day of Term
2. Preparations were made and we transformed
our classroom into a French Café. The food was
made by the Year 8 French class, with the help of
our chef Yirmi. The menu consisted of une quiche,
salade niçoise, pomme frites and mille-feuille. It
was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and a
perfect way to end the term and semester. Pictures
were taken, videos were recorded and memories
were made. On a personal note, I’d like to thank
Yirmi for making the lunch possible and to Ms.
Blacklock for teaching and making French an
experience to remember.
My BRAIN
and how I
learn best
On Wednesday 18 July, ‘The Drama Toolbox’ led by Michaela
transformed the Year 3 students into F.B.I agents ( Full Body
Investigators). They were shrunk in size to be able to investigate
an unhealthy body system using costumes, drama and movement.
Students then discussed and explored what is required for a healthy
body system and looked at the basic connections between the
different systems. As part of our unit ‘My Brain and How I learn Best’
a major focus was on the functions of our brain.
Victory on the Slopes
Ben Brill, Year 7 student, competed last
weekend in the Mt Buller Cup against
many highly accomplished athletes
and won his race in the Under 14 boys
category with a time of 47.99 seconds.
This is an incredible achievement and a
credit to Ben.
Ben is a member of the elite Mt Buller
Race Club (MBRC) and these athletes
are trained by world renowned coaches
including Richard Haslau who is now
coaching Ben for his 5th consecutive
ski season.
For the last 2 years, Ben has trained over
our summer at Winter Park, Colorado
with Richard and this is his 3rd season at
Mt Buller. This means that Ben has skied
about 80 days each year, to prepare him
for the tough competition he faces in all
his races.
Ben is so committed to his skiing
that for this entire ski season, Ben
is attending a private school at Mt
Buller, headed by Dr Richard Smith.
He is among 25 other students from
Australia and overseas who combine
rigorous ski training with school tuition.
Ben trains 6 days a week with MBRC
with only Shabbat being his day off. His
day starts at 7.30am each morning for
ski training which runs until 12.30pm.
School classes then start at 1.30pm and
finish at 5.30pm each day of the week.
Ben’s teachers from TKDS send through
school work that Ben has to complete, in
order to work in parallel with his peers.
There are 6 teachers that are part of this
School at Mt Buller that tutor him.
At the end of these school sessions, Ben
then attends an hour “dry land” training
in the gym to work on his physical fitness.
This coming weekend, Ben will compete
in the Ski and Snowboard Australia
(SSA) competition at Falls Creek. This
is one of 3 major competitions coming
up for Ben where points are earned in
the all-important FIS (International Ski
Federation). The other two competitions
with be at Thredbo and Perisher in NSW.
We wish him the best of luck.
Not to be outdone, Ben’s brother Josh
who is a Year 5 student at TKDS, did
extremely well at the same competition
last weekend where he also competed
in the Under 14 boys. He could have
competed in the younger age group but
wanted a challenge! Josh recorded 12th
position which is an excellent result.
The podium photo shows Ben with his
first place trophy, standing with (from
left to right), Dean Gosper, President of
SSA, Oliver Arter who placed second,
Ben Brill, Dan Walker who placed third
and Stoffl Maier, Program Director of
MBRC. The second photo show Ben mid
race.
Ben is sponsored by Karbon in Australia.
Karbon are the official ski wear sponsors
for the Australian Olympic Ski Team.
The Hebrew Language,
Culture and our Identity
Students in the VCE Hebrew class
started their Detailed Study unit
titled “Language-Culture-Identify”.
The term began with an excursion
to the Immigration Museum where
students explored the exhibition
“Identity: yours, mine, ours”.
Working from Hebrew handouts,
especially created and designed by
our School staff, students’ self-guided
tour highlighted the complexity of
how we form our identity.
It was interesting to listen to the
questions they raised and the
discussions held. Examples included
“in what cases do people choose to
change their name?” “What do they
gain and lose from this change?”.
“How does the way we say things,
our accent and expression, connect
us to our family and cultural
heritage?”. “What makes us
form an opinion on someone we
don’t know and how does such a
judgment differ from people’s own
self-perception?”.
Students focused on the search for
identity of two Jewish artists that
were on display. Adam Nudelman
talked about discovering and passing
on his Jewish identity and Eda
Horton talked about how her glass
creations are an expression of her
own contemporary Jewish identity.
In our discussion we wondered if
the connection to the Jewish world
would have been different, maybe
even stronger, if they had expressed
it in the Hebrew language.
A thought provoking experience
that has facilitated an in-depth
investigation of this complex and
fascinating topic.
A Rabbinic Thought...
Today marks the beginning of the Hebrew month of Av and mid-point of
period of ‘The Three Weeks’ between the fast days of 17th Tammuz and 9th
Av. This period of time, known commonly as Bein Ha‐mitzarim, “between the
straits”, is traditionally observed through a series of special customs derived
from the Jewish laws of mourning (avelut).
The period of The Three Weeks is bounded by two days that commemorate
events associated with the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. The
days between these two events involve adopting a melancholy spirit to reflect
on the catastrophic occurrence in Jewish history.
It is important to recognise however, that Tisha B’Av marks more than the
destruction of the First and Second Temples. The term Churban also reminds us
of the destruction of the city of Jerusalem and the Jewish community and their
hopes and dreams, as well as recalling the many tragedies that have befallen
the Jewish people from that time until our own – for example the Spanish
Inquisition and the Expulsion from Spain.
As modern Jews, the weight we give to these historical or legendary events
clearly influences the way we choose to observe the traditions. Recognising
the diversity of practice and opinion in our community, The King David
School has developed the following policies and practices to guide our
observance at the School.
• No communal musical events (live concerts or performances) will be held
during The Three Weeks, apart from usual liturgical music.
• In The Nine Days preceding Tisha B’Av, instrumental music rehearsals and
performances will not be held. Private lessons may continue as they are
educational activities, but families will be given the freedom to choose their
own level of observance.
• On Tisha B’Av itself, no music or rehearsals (both group and private),
organised sport or recreational excursions will be organised. Recognising
that Tisha B’Av is also observed as a fast day by many, the tuck shop will be
closed for counter service(lunch orders to continue as usual), and fasting
will be facilitated for those older students who wish.
• Our ancient rabbis taught that the Second Temple was destroyed
because of Sinat Khinam (baseless hatred) between Jew and fellow Jew.
Recognising our imperative to heal our world, King David students will be
given opportunities to sit and learn with Jews from diverse backgrounds
during The Nine Days, to learn what binds us together as a people.
May this time of memory and reflection bring meaning to you and your family
During Kesher sessions, Year 7 students have been
discussing the issue of bullying and resilience. We
have discussed why people bully, what bullying
is and how to deal with bullying in different
scenarios. Students have been very mature in
their discussions and this prompted a Thinking
Routine session around the concept of a ‘Chalk
Talk’ where students walk around the room
with a coloured marker responding in writing
to prompting questions such ‘What is bullying?’
‘What if you see someone being bullied?’ and
‘Do you think that people can change?’ Once
students began to respond they were able to have
multiple conversations going at once in a situation
that everyone’s opinion was valued and able to
be debated upon. New questions were raised,
debated and solutions presented all in one 40
minute session.
MATHS COMPETITION
for 2012
Four students said the following about each other.
Maria: Three students: Alex, Natalie and Gregory solved the problem.
Alex: Three students: Maria, Natalie and Gregory did not solve the problem.
Natalie: Maria and Alex lied.
Gregory: Maria, Alex and Natalie said the truth.
How many students did say the truth?
Solution
Shalom all!
The statements of Maria and Alex contradict each other, so at least one of them lied.
Therefore, Gregory lied, because he said that Maria, Alex and Natalie said the truth.
From here there are two possibilities: Natalie said the truth and Natalie lied.
1) If Natalie said the truth, then Maria and Alex lied. So, in this case only one student
said the truth.
2) If Natalie lied, then Maria or Alex said the truth. So, in this case again only one
student said the truth.
Raoul Wallenberg Centenary Commemoration Dinner
The President, Dr Peter Schiff OAM and members of the Executive
have much pleasure in inviting you, your family and friends to commemorate the
100 th anniversary of Raoul Wallenberg’s birth
Guest of Honour: Mr Jan Anger
at Kimberley Gardens, 441 Inkerman Street, St Kilda East
at 6.30pm, Sunday 5 August, 2012
Dress: Lounge suite; yarmulke
After Germany invaded Hungary on 19 March 1944, Per Anger, Jan Anger’s father, originated the
idea of issuing Swedish provisional passports to protect Jews. On 9 July, Raoul Wallenberg arrived
in Budapest. He immediately extended Anger’s initiative, introducing colourful, protective passes
(Schutz-passe) and creating ‘safe houses’ throughout the city. Anger and Wallenberg worked
together, often literally snatching people from transports and death marches.
Proceeds from this function will assist the Pauline Glass Yad Vashem Study Grants for Victorian
teachers to undertake courses in Holocaust studies in Jerusalem.
