QATAR OFFERS

DOHA: Qatar announced on 

Wednesday a programme to allow visafree 

entry for citizens of 80 countries to 

encourage air transport and tourism 

amid a two-month boycott imposed on 

the Gulf state by its neighbors. 

Nationals from dozens of countries in 

Europe and elsewhere including India, 

Lebanon, New Zealand, South Africa, 

and the United States will now receive 

tourist visas on arrival to the gas-rich 

country which hosts the soccer World 

Cup in 2022. 

"The visa exemption scheme will 

make Qatar the most open country in 

the region," Hassan al-Ibrahim, Chief 

Tourism Development officer at Qatar 

Tourism Authority told reporters at a 

press conference in Doha. 

Oil giant Saudi Arabia along with 

Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab 

Emirates imposed a boycott on Qatar 

on June 5 and cut off all transport links 

with the country after accusing it of 

supporting terrorism and of close ties 

to Iran.

India eyeing 

40 lakh cruise 

tourists in 5 

years: Gadkari 

Mumbai: Union Minister of Shipping 

Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said the 

government wanted to increase 

the number of cruise tourists from 

two lakh to 40 lakh in the next five 

years and turn the country into an 

international cruise destination. 

The Minister hoped the number 

of tourist ships visiting the country 

would go up from the present 158 to 

955 every year. Mr. Gadkari said the 

revenue benefit would shoot up to Rs. 

35,500 crore in 2022 from the Rs. 712 

crore generated last year. 

Mr. Gadkari said, “We are the fastest 

growing economy. The infrastructure 

and tourism sectors have a great 

potential to increase employment in 

the country.” The government hopes 

to create 2,50,000 jobs at the five main 

ports of Mumbai, Goa, Mangalore, 

Chennai and Kochi. 

The growth in the cruise industry 

is expected to push infrastructure in 

port areas as better accommodation 

and transport facilities will have to be 

made available.

‘Model code applicable

PANAJI: The chief election officer 

confirmed that the model code of 

conduct for the ensuing bypolls which 

came into effect from July 27, 2017, 

is applicable to entire state of Goa. 

The bypolls in Panaji and Valpoi 

constituencies will be held on August 

23 and the counting will take place on 

August 28. 

The Election Commission of India 

(ECI) while issuing the notification 

of the bypolls last month, had said 

that the code of conduct would be 

applicable only in North Goa.

likely to enter 

EDM festival 

circuit in Goa 

PANAJI: A new player is likely to 

enter Goa's electronic dance music 

(EDM) circuit this December. 

Ahmedabad-based M/s Sudarshan 

Entertainment Pvt Ltd has submitted 

a proposal to the tourism department 

to host a three-day music festival at 

Vagator from December 28-30. 

An official said the exact nature of 

the event remains unclear, but the 

organizer has been asked to resubmit 

its proposal though it has been given 

in-principle approval. The state level 

permission committee (SLPC), a 

recommendatory body, had discussed 

the proposal at its last meeting.

APACHE CHOPPERS AT BORDERS 

TO BOOST FIREPOWER 

At present, the Air Force is 

planning to deploy the two 

squadrons of the Apache 

helicopters in Pathankot in Punjab 

and Jorhat in Assam. 

In a bid to boost its firepower at the 

borders, India is planning to deploy 

its deadly American Apache attack 

helicopters at the sensitive Pathankot 

airbase in Punjab as well as Jorhat 

in Assam to fortify the northeastern 

sector. The defence ministry cleared a 

$2.2 billion contract with the US in 2015 

for 22 Apache attack helicopters that 

will strengthen the Indian Air Force's 

capabilities on the frontiers with 

Pakistan and China. 

"At present, the Air Force is planning 

to deploy the two squadrons of the 

Apache helicopters in Pathankot 

in Punjab and Jorhat in Assam to 

meet the security requirements of 

the western and the eastern theatre," 

sources in the defence ministry

Ravi came back to India and became

growing tension forced him to work 

for the welfare of these distraught 

people and educate them about the 

government schemes and subsidies 

they were entitled to. 

With his tiny steps and bright ideas, 

he began approaching farmers in the 

areas nearby and addressed their 

problems. He educated them about new 

techniques, especially grafting with 

which he created his miracle, on his 5 

acres of ancestral land. 

One of his most lauded works, the 

mango tree grows 51 varieties of 

mangoes on one single tree. It's 50 

years old and has been grafted 1,350 

times to get these varieties. The tree, 

which was old and only gave sour 

mangoes earned him close to 1,000 

is now a loaded gem of varieties and

online ticketing and other services 

will be liable to deduct 1 per cent tax at 

source under the GST regime as they 

have been classified as e-commerce 

operators, the CBEC said today. 

Under the Goods and Services Tax 

(GST) regime, an e- commerce operator 

is required to collect 1 per cent of the 

net value of taxable supplies made 

through it. The amount so collected is 

called tax collected at source or TCS 

but this provision has been kept in 

abeyance for the time being.

Aadhaar not 

mandatory for 

booking rail 

tickets: Govt 

NEW DELHI: The Aadhaar number is 

not mandatory for booking rail tickets, 

the Centre told the Rajya Sabha on 

Friday. 

In a written reply in the Upper House 

of Parliament, Union minister of state 

for railways Rajen Gohain said as 

of now, his ministry had no plans to 

make the 12-digit unique identification 

number compulsory for booking rail 

tickets. 

"At present, there is no proposal to 

make the Aadhaar number compulsory 

for booking tickets for rail journey. 

However, with effect from January 

1, 2017, the requirement of Aadhaar 

verification for getting concessional 

railway tickets for senior citizens has 

been introduced on a voluntary basis," 

he said. 

The minister's statement comes 

on a day the home ministry made 

the Aadhaar number mandatory for 

registration of death with effect from 

October 1, 2017.

planning an aggressive foray . The 

company has decided to line up a

introduce three cars -between 2019 and

SUV and a sedan, and Kia hopes to 

achieve annual sales of 3 lakh cars over

Pokemon Go is a smartphone-based 

game, which requires players to 

'catch' virtual creatures, one of the

Pikachu, by going to real-world 

locations where the game places them. 

The festival, which is jointly 

organised by Yokohama city and The 

Pokemon Company, features a total of 

15,000 Pikachus and will end on August 

15, the event organisers said.

upon its release in 2016, breaking 

records for mobile app downloads and

9-year-old applies for alienfighting 

job, NASA responds 

A 9-year-old boy answered a call from 

NASA to protect Earth from aliens - 

and got an encouraging response to his 

job application. 

"My name is Jack Davis and I 

would like to apply for the planetary 

protection officer job," the fourthgrader 

wrote in a letter. "I may be nine 

but think I would be fit for the job. One 

of the reasons is my sister says I am 

an alien also I have seen almost all the 

space and alien movies I can see." 

The job advertisement for a planetary 

protection officer explained that space 

missions sometimes introduce Earth 

organisms into other parts of the solar 

system. 

In technical terms, the officer 

would assist with the "avoidance of 

organic-constituent and biological 

contamination in human and robotic 

space exploration." 

In bolstering his case for the job, Jack 

explained in his letter, "I have also seen 

the show Marvel Agents of Shield and 

hope to see the movie Men in Black. I 

am great at video games. I am young, 

so I can learn to think like an Alien." 

Although the position "may not be 

in real-life what the title conjures up," 

NASA said it promotes "the responsible 

exploration of our solar system by 

preventing microbial contamination." 

Jack received a letter from Dr. James 

L. Green, the director of NASA's 

planetary science division, saying the 

officer position was "very important 

work." 

"We are always looking for bright 

future scientists and engineers to help 

us, so I hope you will study hard and do 

well in school. We hope to see you here 

at NASA one of these days!" Green's 

letter says. 

He also got a call from NASA's 

planetary research director, Jonathan 

Rall, to congratulate him on his 

interest.

of Thrones actors leaking online. 

Hackers broke into HBO’s systems 

and reportedly stole 1.5 terabytes of 

data, including scripts for upcoming 

Game of Thrones episodes and two 

unreleased episodes of Ballers and 

Room 104. The Guardian reports that 

hackers have released 3.4GB of data, 

and that they’re demanding that HBO 

pay an undisclosed ransom to prevent 

further leaks.

Thrones episodes, and technical

For the unversed, Priyanka Chopra

Chainsmokers, for a single—Erase—
