WELCOME TO
THE ALL GOLD
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
4
Welcome to this issue of
the All Gold. It has certainly
been a busy week since we
played so well against the
Crusaders.
Just prior to the Crusaders
match, the news broke
that our Head coach Lee
Greenwood would be
leaving at the end of the
season. Lee has been with
us since 2015 and he has
put his mark on the club
as it makes its way in the
professional game.
He can certainly look back
with pride at the work
he has done in instilling
values throughout the
organisation and his
services will no doubt be in
demand in the future.
Former Parramatta and
Wigan coach John Monie
always used to say that a
coach’s life at a club was
three years and while there
are obvious exceptions
(Arsene Wenger and Sir
Alex Ferguson to name
but two) Lee has clearly
felt that he has given all he
could to set the club in the
right direction in his three
years at the helm.
Lee has put in the mileage
(literally) travelling the
motorway to and from
Yorkshire and with a young
family to consider, he felt
the time is right to seek
opportunities closer to
home.
The All Golds have much to
thank Lee for and we wish
him every success in the
future
The players rewarded him
with a performance against
the Crusaders but these
have been all too rare. The
demolition of Keighley at
the start of the season
seemed to be the herald of
a brighter 2017 but there
have been too few repeats
of that performance. The
club has, though achieved
a record 10 wins during
the season and, with five
games still to play, ought
to increase that tally before
season’s end.
Lee has been a positive
advocate for links with
the community game and
though it is not as strong or
robust as that in the north
it is an important element
in the growth of the All
Golds as a professional
club.
In this issue of the
All Gold, we have an
interesting reflection from
George Cowburn on the
geographic spread of the
game over its 122 years and
a preview of the West of
England Finals which take
place this Saturday.
The Gloucestershire
Warriors take on Swindon
St George’s reserve side
in the Plate Final while
Oxford Cavaliers (who
beat Cheltenham Phoenix
in their semi final) take on
Swindon’s first team. Good
luck to all involved.
As usual it is thanks to all
our contributors and to
Craig at Craig Paul Design
for crafting the disparate
parts into a coherent
whole.
I hope you enjoy our
offering and here’s hoping
that the boys can carry
last week’s form into this
weekend’s game.
THE RUGBY
LEAGUE ATLAS
WRITTEN BY GEORGE COWBURN
6 When the Northern Union broke away from
the RFU in 1895 it was, as the name implies,
purely a northern organisation.
All the 22 founder clubs were from Lancashire,
Yorkshire and Cheshire, seven of whom are no
longer with us, namely Manningham – who
were the first winners of the league and later
became Bradford City association football club
– Runcorn, Brighouse, Tyldesley, Liversedge,
Stockport and Broughton Rangers.
Quite early on, efforts were made to break
out of the northern boundaries and in 1908
there were six teams from South Wales in the
Northern Union, enough to form a small Welsh
league within the organisation.
Merthyr and Ebbw Vale were the first to join
in 1907 followed by Mid Rhondda, Treherbert,
Barry and Aberdare in 1908.
Sadly, by the end of the 1912, season all had
gone. A perceived lack of support from up
north, lack of funds and the ability of the RFU
to turn a blind eye to remaining Welsh clubs
paying their players spelt the end of expansion
in Wales at the time.
It is not the first time our opponents today,
Coventry Bears, have had a rugby league club
in their city either.
In 1910 Coventry joined the Northern Union.
Based at the Old Bull Fields (locally known
as ‘the Butts’) they bumped along around the
bottom of the league for three seasons, giving
up the ghost after the 1912 season when they
finished last with no wins and just one draw in
27 matches.
Their only claim to fame was the one
international cap won by their player J Tomes.
Starved of success and money the club
collapsed after 1912 and later reformed as a RU
club who now play alongside the Bears at the
Butts Arena.
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
Further efforts in Wales
(Pontypridd in 1927 and 1928
plus Cardiff in 1951) came to
nought but in the 1930s an
attempt was first made to
establish the game in London
following the success of the
Challenge Cup Final which had
moved to the capital in 1929.
Wigan Highfield moved to
London for the 1934 season to
be known as London Highfield.
Despite a respectable mid
table finish they only lasted one
season, returning north and
reforming as Liverpool Stanley.
Businessman and Greyhound
Stadium owner Sydney Parkes
dipped his toe in the water in
1935 when the Streatham and
Mitcham club was founded
along with the Acton and
Willesden club. Acton were
“one season wonders” and
Streatham barely lasted much
longer, disbanding after 26
games of their second season.
Despite the attraction of star
players such as New Zealand
All Blacks international George
Nepia, London, it seemed,
wasn’t ready for a rugby league
club of its own.
After the Second World War,
the entry into the league of
Workington Town in 1945 and
Whitehaven in 1948 raised
the profile of the game in
Cumberland, as it then was,
particularly after Town won the
1952 Challenge Cup final.
They were followed by our
friends from Doncaster in 1951
and Blackpool in 1954 (though
they are sadly no longer with us)
after which the league settled
down to a 30 club format.
The entry of Fulham in 1980,
now of course London Broncos,
heralded a plethora of new
clubs, mostly short-lived apart
from 1984 newcomers Sheffield
Eagles and the Broncos
themselves.
Who remembers Carlisle
or Cardiff Blue Dragons/
Bridgend and Kent/Southend
Invicta, Mansfield Marksmen/
Nottingham City and
Scarborough Pirates (though a
club by that name still exists)?
They were mainly isolated clubs
who foundered partly because
of their isolation and partly due
to a lack of a coordinated effort
to grow the game in those areas.
Now there are people with
sincerely held views (sometimes
known as flatcappers) who feel
the game should concentrate all
its efforts, and be firmly based,
in the North although there are
also many people who welcome
the expansion the game has
seen in recent years.
London now has two teams,
the Broncos and the Skolars, as
does Wales with the Crusaders
and the Ironmen, and France is
represented by Catalan Dragons
and Toulouse Olympique despite
the earlier failures of Paris St
German and Toulouse.
Newcastle Thunder are well
established in the North East
despite two unsuccessful
seasons for a Newcastle team
in the 1930s and the All Golds,
Coventry Bears, Hemel Stags
and Oxford continue to fly the
flag in their areas.
Fingers crossed the game will
take root in Canada and North
America spearheaded by
Toronto Wolfpack and that’s
just in the Northern Hemisphere.
In the Southern Hemisphere the
divisive Super League war of
the mid-1990s saw mergers (St
George and Illawarra and the
disastrous North Sydney and
Manly) and a reduction of clubs
in the Sydney area. The Gold
Coast finally has a (just about)
viable club after the failure of
the Seagulls while the town of
Gosford is often mentioned
as a base for a new club or a
relocated North Sydney Bears
‘franchise’.
Matches are played on the road
in Perth and New Zealand as
the Warriors there continue
to under-achieve given the
talent pool they have access to,
though the lure of the Australian
dollar creams of much of it.
Interestingly, four states were
represented in the semi finals
of the NRL last season. New
South Wales (by Cronulla),
Victoria (Melbourne Storm), the
ACT (Canberra Raiders) and
Queensland (the Cowboys).
ALL GOLDS vs. BEARS
MATCH PREVIEW
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
The Golden Fern are on home soil again
this Saturday when they entertain
Coventry Bears.
With just four games left of the Shield this
looks another must win game for the All
Golds who are aiming to finish inside the
top two, to set up a place in the Shield
final. Currently lying in fourth and with
upcoming games against second placed
London and top of the table Hunslet the
clash with Coventry could prove pivotal in
their quest to reach the final next month.
After a confidence boosting 40-22 win
over North Wales Crusaders head coach
Lee Greenwood is looking for a similar
level of performance against a rapidly
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
improving Coventry side. He said: “I
thought we did well for most of the game
last week. Our start wasn’t great but we
dug in and didn’t let the game get away
from us. That game is history now though
and we go again on Saturday against
Coventry.
9
“I’ve said before I admire the way Coventry
operate. Both on and off the field they are
doing things the right way. They’ve added
a number of players since we beat them
earlier in the season so they’ll be coming
here to win. I think both teams are of a
similar quality, they’ve lost a lot of close
matches this season which shows how
competitive they are. We know we’ll have
to be on our game otherwise we’ll get
beat. We’ve had some good battles with
them in the three seasons that I’ve been
here so we’re looking forward to another
on Saturday. They’ve got a number of
dangerous players that we’ll need to keep
quiet.
“The players who came in against
Crusaders did well so I’d imagine our
squad will look similar to last week. I say
it over and over again but attitude is a big
part of this game. The players have shown
how good they can be this season, it’s up
to them to show it again on Saturday.”
Despite winning only three of their
seventeen league games so far this season
the Bears are not to be underestimated.
Just a few weeks ago they came within a
whisker of holding Workington Town to a
draw only to lose out to a last minute drop
goal. Tom Tsang’s side edged past Hemel
last weekend so they arrive in Cheltenham
in confident mood.
The last time the two sides met was on
April 30 and it proved to be a fantastic
encounter. The All Golds raced into a
10-0 lead playing a fantastic brand of
attacking rugby but the Bears fought
back and lead 12-10 just before the break.
Three tries in eight second half minutes
from Chris Barlow, Steven Nield and Brad
Kislingbury gave the Golden Fern a 26-12
lead but the Bears made it interesting late
on when they added another six points to
their tally. Lee Greenwood’s men hung on
though to record an important win.
TODAY’S OPPONENTS
COVENTRY BEARS
WRITTEN BY JACK CONLON
12
FORM
Coventry currently have a 50% record in
the League 1 Shield, losing to Hunslet in
round one before just edging out Hemel
29-26 last week. That was their first win in
almost two months after a horror run of six
consecutive losses, including thrashings at
the hands of Hunslet, Newcastle and North
Wales. Last week’s win is a step in the right
direction, though, as they managed to just
about control a Hemel side who are on the
up and even gave us a scare a few weeks
ago.
Coach Tom Tsang will be hoping his side
kick on now, and use it as a catalyst to
finish the season strongly.
BACKS
Arguably, Coventry’s biggest threat
comes in the halves, with Tsang having a
plethora of talented playmakers to choose
from. Brad Delaney and Billy Gaylor have
been the most used combination, but
the recent signings of Jordan Gale, Paul
Emanuelli and Sheffield loanee James
Kelly have created plenty of competition.
They lead what is otherwise a rather
youthful backline, consisting of the likes
of Jason Bass, Harry Chapman, Hayden
Freeman and Charlie O’Mara, who are all
younger than 21. Bass recently returned
from the Student World Cup, where he
represented England alongside our very
own Harry Kidd, Ben Stead and James
Mason. Fan favourite Jamahl Hunte
completes the options out wide, alongside
recent acquisition and former NRL Rookie
contestant Luke Frixou.
www.allgoldsrugby.com
FORWARDS
Like in the backs, Coventry have used
mid-season recruiting to strengthen their
pack. Towering prop Brad Brennan and
versatile forward Paddy Jones have both
arrived on loan from Barrow and Rochdale
respectively, adding to the already bulky
front row of James Geurtjens and Jack
Morrison.
Alongside them, halfbacks Billy Gaylor
and James Kelly have filled in at hooker,
but are backed up Lewis Lord and former
South Wales Ironman Zak Williams. Lord
and back rower Kieron Sherratt have
also just returned from England Students
World Cup duty. Captain Matt Reid and
club record appearance holder Chris
Barratt are mainstays in the second row,
while John Aldred will be sure to add
impact off the bench.
STAR MAN
The Bears have a number of big men leading
their line, but Aussie-Welsh prop James
Geurtjens has been a real enforcer since
arriving at the club in 2015. The 31-yearold
came over from Queensland Cup side
Norths Devils to add bulk and experience to
their young squad and has become a firm
favourite with fans.
Geurtjens was part of the Wales squad
for the 2013 World Cup but didn’t actually
debut for the national side until October
2015, which capped off a successful first
season in the English game. Since then he’s
established himself as a constant leader
at the Bears, with his tough attacking and
aggressive defence laying a great platform
for the halves to play off. He’s found himself
starting on the bench in recent weeks, and
so will add a huge impact when introduced
today.
ONE TO WATCH
Despite having played just four games of
professional Rugby League in his career,
Luke Frixou may be one of the more
recognisable names in the Coventry lineup.
Only last year, Frixou was featuring on
prime time television over in Australia, when
he competed in the reality series The NRL
Rookie. He was cut from the show in week
six due to his limited Rugby League skills,
but playing for the Bears gives him a great
opportunity to enhance his abilities and
showcase what he’s capable of.
With his strong but athletic frame, the former
GB bobsledder played at prop during his
time on the show but has been used as a
centre by Tom Tsang. He’s deceptively quick
and so is effective as a wide runner, but is yet
to completely find his position. Even Tsang
has admitted that Frixou could easily end up
as forward in the near future. Regardless of
his position, the 22-year-old only knows one
way to play – and that’s hard. He carries the
ball well and is solid in defence, making him
a real handful for any opposition.
TOO GOOD FOR
CRUSADERS
ALL GOLDS 40 – 22 CRUSADERS
SATURDAY 05 AUGUST 2017
PRINCE OF WALES STADIUM
The All Golds put an end to their four match
losing streak with a 40-22 victory over North
Wales Crusaders.
This was the fourth time the teams have met in
Cheltenham this season and it’s safe to say the
Crusaders will be hoping it’s the last time, having
lost three of the four encounters. The scoreline
might suggest this was a comfortable win but
it was anything but. Like several games this
season the All Golds finished strongly in the final
quarter, in fact it wasn’t until Malikhi Lloyd-Jones
crashed over in the 73rd minute that the home
side felt comfortable. The Crusaders, missing
several big names, used only 15 players so it was
understandable they tired late on.
“I felt we deserved the win in the end”, said Lee
Greenwood. “First half we had to do plenty of
defending because we were making so many
mistakes, we must like defending! Crusaders
broke through the middle a couple of times
which was worrying but credit to our lads, they
defended their line well.
“We finished the game strongly which was
pleasing. We’ve done it a lot this season which
shows all the work we did during pre-season is
working. I can’t fault the effort and determination
that the players have shown this season. It’s
another win against a good northern side so we
have to be happy.”
Both sides, obviously low on confidence after
poor performances the week before, were guilty
of making mistakes in a first quarter which saw
three times as many scrums as completed sets.
After winning a penalty for interference at the
play-the-ball the Crusaders scored the first
try of the game at the end of the first quarter
he strolled through. Price
converted to make it a six point
game again.
The next score looked likely to
be the winner, thankfully for the
home supporters it was their
team that got it. Parry, who
covered every blade of grass
in another fine performance,
fed Malikhi Lloyd-Jones who
smashed his way through the
Crusaders defence to score his
first try of the season. Mitchell
converted to give his side a 34-
22 lead with five minutes left.
when Ryan Millington broke the
line and touched down. Danny
Price added the extras to give
the visitors a 6-0 lead.
The Golden Fern responded in
fine style and were soon 12-6
ahead. Joe McClean popped
up a superb offload for Phil
Cowburn to gather and touch
down before the impressive
Kadeem Williams ran onto a
Jack Mitchell pass to crash
over. Both tries were converted
by Jack Mitchell who had a
great afternoon with the boot,
missing only one of his seven
conversions.
Crusaders levelled it up at 12-12
soon after when, off the back of
a penalty, Alex Whalley found a
gap in the home defence and
scored.
with him over the white wash.
Price’s conversion slid wide
which meant the home side
had a narrow two point lead.
The All Golds responded with
a brace of quick-fire tries. Steve
Parry sent Chris Barlow over
in the corner before the Welsh
international scored a superb
solo try after weaving his way
through the Crusaders defence.
Twelve points ahead it looked
like the home side had done
enough but the visitors hit back
to set up a tense final quarter.
Matt Davies collected the ball
20 metres out before throwing
a dummy which opened up
a gap in the defence which
Phil Cowburn, superb from the
first minute to the last, scored
his second of the game with
just two minutes remaining
after he collected a clever inside
pass from Danny Fallon. Jack
Mitchell made no mistake with
the conversion as the home
side could finally relax, knowing
the game was won.
It looked like that might be that
as far as the first half went but
just before the hooter Harry
Kidd received a pass from
Steve Parry and rolled his way
over the whitewash. Mitchell
converted to give the hosts an
18-12 half-time lead.
The see-saw nature of the
game continued in the second
half, Crusaders were back in
it again after Kenny Baker did
well to drag three defenders
FLAME OF THE WEST
WEST of ENGLAND FINAL PREVIEWS
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
16
With the semi finals now complete in the
West of England league, the double header
finals day will take place at Portway Rugby
Development Centre, Bristol this Saturday (12
August).
Having beaten Cheltenham Phoenix 44-28 in
their semi final encounter, Oxford Cavaliers
will meet the Pool 2 winners Swindon St
George in the Championship final at 3pm.
The final brings together last season’s plate
winners in the Cavaliers and the championship
runners up from 2016 Swindon who will be
contesting their fourth Grand Final having
also lost in 2011 and 2014 both times to the
Gloucestershire Warriors.
The Cavaliers will be in their third title decider
having lifted the crown in 2012 before
being demolished 94-12 by Cheltenham the
following year.
Swindon will go into the game as favourites
as they defeated the Cavaliers twice in the
regular season, 36-28 at home and more
emphatically 54-8 in Oxford. Having gone
through to the final without playing they
have had a fortnight to prepare and will be
desperate to earn some reward for what has
been a phenomenally successful season for
the club.
Prior to that (1pm kick off), the Plate
competition will be fought out between
Gloucestershire Warriors and Swindon St
George A.
The sides have met twice in the league when
100 points were shared in each game. The
Warriors secured their first
win of the season 60-40
at Swindon’s Supermarine
ground in Round 3 of the
competition but were more
emphatic 82-18 winners on
home soil last month.
The Warriors saw off a stern
challenge from Bath RL in
the semi-final, coming back
from an early 20-0 deficit
and then playing most of
the second half with 12 men
following the dismissal of
Ash Kocerhan in the opening
minutes of the period.
Both sides scored eight tries
but it was the goal-kicking
of halfback Ash Lewis that
was the difference as he
hit seven goals to the four
mustered by Bath’s Alex
Burns and Josh Frost in the
46-40 win.
Trailing 28-10 going into
the final few minutes of the
first half, the Warriors struck
twice through Sean Roberts
and Jordan Smith to add to
earlier scores from Roberts
and Matt Jones and trailed
by only 28-22 at the whistle.
Frost (2), Cieran Chester,
Ryan Willcox, Tom Plance
and Burns had crossed
for Bath in their first half
onslaught but somehow
the Warriors stayed in touch
when it looked as though a
cricket score was possible.
After Kocerhan’s departure
for a dangerous tackle,
the Warriors ran riot and
posted four unanswered
tries through Jones, Kirk
Lewis, Ryan Tanner and Ash
Lewis but the Bath side hit
back through Burns and
Chester leaving the game
in the balance for the final
dozen or so minutes before
the Warriors could celebrate
victory.
Having overcome a difficult
schedule which included
a narrow 38-30 win in
Somerset, the Warriors will
be favourites to take the
Plate for the first time. They
will however be wary of a
Swindon side
that is well capable of
scoring points and caused
them plenty of problems in
the game at Swindon before
the Warriors’ superior
firepower won the day.
It certainly should be an
open and entertaining
encounter.
WEST OF ENGLAND
LIONHEARTS
NEW DEPARTURE FOR THE HARRY JEPSON TROPHY
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
18
In a new departure for the Harry Jepson
Trophy, which celebrates its 20th
anniversary this year, the competition will be
contested by regional rather than club sides
this season.
The West of England Lionhearts will join
sides from the East, London and the
Midlands in a four way tussle for the trophy
that has been competed for since 1997
when the North London Skolars carried
off the trophy as the best of the Southern
Conference.
Following trial matches and a successful
tour to Ireland last season, the West of
England management team have been
monitoring the progress of players playing
in the league this year and have identified
around 40 candidates for the squad to take
part in the competition.
There will be a trial match next Sunday
(20 August) to identify the final squad for
the opening game in September between
the East (players from Bath, Oxford,
Southampton, Portsmouth and Swindon)
and the West (Cheltenham, Gloucestershire,
Bristol, Forest Bulldogs, Somerset Vikings
players).
The Venue is yet to be announced but
the West of England twitter account (@
WestofEngRL) should give details when
they are available.
The Squads are as follows:
