New appointments
Two key positions were created by
SACOME in 2007 to strengthen the
organisation’s ability to represent
its members’ interests:
Mr Jonathon Forbes was appointed
Director Industry Development
with a mandate to provide programs
and projects to assist industry in its
development, taking a pro-active
approach. Johnathon works with
government and other stakeholders
to ensure the resources industry
is well placed to take advantage
of opportunities and overcome the
constraints of a growing sector.
Ms Anne Walker was appointed Director
of Industry Marketing in recognition
of the need to better promote the
resources industry to the South
Australian Community, particularly
in light of the community backlash
beginning in Western Australia,
a state heavily reliant on mining.
Anne communicates with a range of
stakeholders to enhance understanding
of the industry and the role of SACOME.
Exploration Committee
The Exploration Committee comprises
of mainly industry members and is
ably chaired by Kevin Wills from Flinders
Mines. The committee has discussed
issues as diverse as land access,
flow-through share schemes, heritage
clearances, research and development
and the Mining Act Amendments, to
name just a few. The committee has
been instrumental in policy setting
and providing direction on behalf
of the members.
Occupational health
& safety Committee
The OH&S Committee was
reconvened to identify and address
issues and share information. Issues
that have been dealt with include
OH&S training facilities for South
Australia, Protection from Incrimination,
Review of the Occupational Health,
Safety and Welfare Regulations 1995,
Alcohol Management and Generic
Safety Inductions.
The committee, chaired by Andy
Simmons from BHP Billiton has also
kept close ties with the Mining and
Quarrying Occupational Health & Safety
Committee (MAQOSHC) with a SACOME
OH&S Committee member, Kevin
Husler, representing members’
interests on MAQOSHC.
