The Chairman's Notes
Today we open our 2017/18 league campaign and extend a
warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Old
Wulfs. Win lose or draw today our visitors are most welcome to
join us a;er the game for our award-winning hospitality.
Well here we go, another football season and of course every
club starts full of op=mism and we are no different. A new era
starts today at The Paycare Ground with numerous comings
and goings in pre-season all leading to a renewed sense of
cau=ous op=mism on and off the field.
Following ScoA Bamford's spell as caretaker manager at the end of last season we
decided to adver=se the manager's posi=on, consequently the previous management
team all le;. Mark McIntyre match secretary, programme editor and media man also
tendered his resigna=on separately. Following a selec=on process we appointed Andy
Parkes as our new manager. Andy is a Darlaston man and has already made a major
impression on us with his style of play, passion, professionalism, coaching quali=es
and ability to aAract good quality players. Andy’s assistant is Andy “Tommo” Thomas,
Shaun Bolton is goalkeeping coach with Stephen “Coyney” Coyne and Joel Waite
comple=ng Andy’s backroom team. All live locally and I know every supporter will give
Andy and his team their 100% support and commitment. Several players le; or did
not feature in Andy’s plans whilst 10 players from last season’s squad have signed
together with 16 new addi=ons.
Also joining the club is Simon Cox as match secretary, programme editor and media
and marke=ng manager. Simon has been magnificent since his arrival, the Facebook
pages, website and official matchday programme have all improved beyond
recogni=on. Off the field we have secured 4 new sponsors PAL Group, KTC Edible Oils,
Wednesbury Trade Centre and Trevor Bomber Chartered Accountants.
There has been an awful lot of hard work going on behind the scenes which is not
always obvious. The home dressing room has been refurbished, the referees room
“spruced up”, the dance floor sanded and polished, carpets cleaned, minor repairs
undertaken, privet and hedges trimmed and the site cleared of all surplus furniture,
equipment and rubbish.
So as I say a new era starts today. From the Chairman to the management and players
I say we know there will be ups and downs but please at all =mes represent the club
and town with pride. To our unbelievable supporters I say thank you for your
magnificent support, enjoy the game and enjoy the season
View from the Dugout
Good a;ernoon to you all, welcome to The Paycare Ground for the first
League match of the 2017/18 West Midlands (Regional) League season.
This is the first opportunity I have had to officially say hello to the Club
Members and Darlaston supporters, and to introduce my staff.
As most of you know I
am Darlaston born and
bred, I s=ll live in the
area with my family as
do all of the coaching
team. I have a long
associa=on with the
club, having played for
Darlaston as a youth
player, before leaving
in 1997 returning
three years later and
played for a further five years for the club. Myself and my Assistant Andy
Thomas (Tomo) have been together for the past four seasons at Red Star
Alma and West Bromwich United where last season where we finished
runners up in Division 2 and won the Division League Cup in our first
season. There are three other members of my team, two of which are no
strangers to Darlaston Town, ex player Stephen Coyne and Joel Waite,
who we all know has had a difficult =me recently finally, my friend Shaun
Bolton, who in his youth also played at the club.
When coming to a new club
there are always lots of
unanswered ques=ons, but
because we knew so much
about the club, the transi=on
has been very smooth, the
Chairman and Club
CommiAee have been
outstanding since my team
and I were appointed, they
have been so suppor=ve and nothing has been too much trouble. We are
5
desperate to bring some success to the club and can promise that every effort will
be made to make sure it happens.
We have also been
so fortunate to have
the nucleus of last
season’s Darlaston
squad who were
joined by some of
last season’s winning
squad from West
Bromwich United.
we had a great
group of players to
integrate in preseason,
along the
way there have been
some new faces added, the club now has a mul=-talented squad with more than
50% of the squad under the age of 24, which bodes well for the club’s future.
We reported back to pre-season training on 10 th June, since that =me the players
have been worked so hard, but they have s=ll come back for more at the next
session. I have always been very enthusias=c, some would say obsessive about the
work I believe has to be done on the training ground. I really do look forward to
every second when I am working with my coaching team and the players, the
biggest part of pre-season for me is seeing the difference from first day of preseason
to the last. This is where we see the change within the individual player,
how much fiAer and sharper they are, how more tac=cally aware and how the
group has come together to form
a squad to represent the club.
The biggest thing is always the
fitness levels, but as the sessions
go on and increase in intensity
complemented by pre-season
games, we get to see and learn a
lot more about the individuals.
Player awareness, understanding
of systems and Individual
performances are what we are
monitoring.
6
The main aim is to get through pre-season with few or liAle injury issues, which
we have managed to achieve. In our seven pre-season matches, I wanted us to
be crea=ve with line-ups selec=ng different squads and teams to give all players
maximum =me on the pitch it’s about looking at partnerships and looking at
players in different roles”
“We predominantly
deployed a 3-5-2
forma=on throughout the
games, but adapted
whenever necessary –
whichever way we set up
in games during the
coming season players are
always in and out of
forma=ons, it’s all about
how we adapt in the
transi=on from aAacking
to defending that’s the
real key.
I will be looking to drill the squad in training so that they are able to react and
adapt to any match situa=on that unfolds as the season progresses. This takes
me=culous hours of planning, and then requires a lot of hard work not only by
the coaching staff but also the players to make sure they understand what we
are training to achieve, one of the most pleasing things of pre-season is this
group have been so easy to work with because they have really bought into the
new training methods, drills, paAerns of play, tac=cs and ideas.
As we get into the league season you will see from game to game depending on
the opposi=on we will play different forma=ons and deploy different tac=cs.
There will be different styles and paAerns of play and we are prepared for the
long season ahead the league with cup games is very demanding, so we need a
big squad to cope with it.
Overall I’m really pleased with the way pre-season has gone this summer myself
and coaching staff along with the players have been working hard in order to be
in the best shape possible come the start of the season today against Old
Wulfrunians.
What Darlaston Town (1874) FC
means to
Graham and Brian Lloyd
Graham says- “Several years ago my wife was going to throw away our local weekly
paper The Black Country Bugle and on the off chance asked me if I wanted to read it. I
said yes and on the back page there was an ar=cle and a picture of Neil Chambers
publicising his book on the “History of Darlaston Town Football Club” and that he was
doing a book signing at Darlaston Library.
I telephoned Neil to tell him my grandad and Brian’s great grandad William Lloyd
played for Darlaston between 1904 and 1910. Neil invited me to the book signing, Brian
and I went along to meet Neil. We took with us a team photograph from 1910/11 as
well as my grandad’s Walsall Senior Cup winners medal because we thought Neil may
be interested.
I found out from the book that my grandad won the Walsall & District League, the
Birmingham Junior League and Birmingham Combina=on as well as numerous other
cups. He played in the same team as Harry Wait the goalkeeper who went on to play
210 consecu=ve league games for Walsall and was trainer there in 1933 when they
played Arsenal in the FA Cup.
My grandad played for Darlaston in their first ever FA Cup win in 1909 when they beat
Halesowen 4-3. When they won the League in 1910/11 the league included big teams
like Telford (Wellington St Georges), Hednesford Town, Willenhall, Redditch, Nuneaton
and Bromsgrove Rovers.
Since reading the book Brian and I have researched my grandad further and found he
played at half back. Brian and I went to The City Ground to see where my grandad
played, it was really a piece of family history. We enjoyed the whole experience so
much, we started to go to watch Darlaston and have supported them ever since.
We travel to games home and away, in all weathers, regularly going to games early to
have our dinner out and have a pint. When going to away games we wear our Darlaston
Town (1874) replica shirts and whilst in pubs and at away grounds people will come and
talk to us and ask us about Darlaston.
We have grown to love the club, enjoying the days out and suppor=ng the team. We
have made many friends and acquaintances through Darlaston Town (1874) FC,
everyone is very friendly and welcoming and we are now affec=onately known as “The
Lloyds”.
Match Report
Saturday 30th July Kick Off 2 pm
Darlaston Town (1874) 2 Smithswood Firs 6
A stunning second half performance saw Midland League Smithswood Firs
bring Darlaston's 6 game winning streak to an end at The Paycare Ground.
Both sides have had impressive pre-seasons but the visitors from Solihull
turned on the heat in the second half and ended comfortable winners. With
Ryan McAllister, Lucas Hough, Martin Stanton and Sam Causton all
unavailable Darlaston boss Andy Parkes was forced into several changes and
fielded a make shift back four who found Trea Bertie and Tyrone Smith a
handful. For the second successive pre-season game, a crowd of more than 100
turned up at the Paycare Ground to witness a game of excellent neat passing
football.
The visitors were impressive from
the start but Darlaston matched them
stride for stride taking the lead in the
7th minute when Ant Follows
squeezed home a Daryl Westwood
corner. Darlaston had keeper Aaron
Morris to thank on 15 minutes with a
superb save diving high to his left
denying Trea Bertie a certain equaliser. A minute later the visitors drew level
when Sawyer set up Bertie to score with a deft header from 10 yards.
The game was evenly poised with both sides playing neat passing football and it
was the home side who went in front again on 21 minutes when Follows burst
into the box to score his second of the game from 15 yards.
Both Morris and Lewis Cottrill made excellent saves to deny Smith and
Hughes respectively. On 32 minutes Hughes burst into the box unmarked but
Cottrill saved with his feet to deny the striker. Both Bertie and Ty Smith drilled
efforts wide before the equaliser arrived two minutes before the break. Trea
Bertie and Danny Charlton combining to set up Ty Smith who drilled home with
the outside of his boot through a crowded goalmouth giving keeper
10
Morris no chance.
The teams entered the half time
interval all square but the 2nd half
was a different affair with the
visitors turning up the heat with a
dazzling 45 minutes. Firstly on 53
mins Aaron Anderson and Trea
Bertie combined for Martin
Crawford to fire home into the
bottom corner, giving the visitors the lead for the first time. the visitors
doubled their advantage two minutes later when a stray Dave Richards pass
was intercepted by Bertie who converted comfortably from 15 yards after
rounding keeper Morris.
The impressive visitors were well on top and two late goals gave the score
line a slightly flattering look firstly Aime Munianga and then Khalil Harrison
four minutes from time completed the scoring.
Despite the disappointment of their first defeat in 7 games Darlaston
continued to play passing football and boss Andy Parkes learned a lot about
his squad from what was by some distance their most difficult pre-season
game.
Despite the loss Darlaston gained
plaudits from the opposition
manager who said " a great
performance against a top
Darlaston Town (1874) side,
everyone was at their best today
and the lads were quality". The
Smithswood Firs Chairman went
on to say, "Great set up, great welcome and the fans were excellent too".
Also at the game was Made in Birmingham TV non-league soccer pundit
and Midland League Press Officer, Gary Hazlehurst who was equally
complimentary about the Darlaston Town (1874) set up saying "
Fantastic welcome at Darlaston Town (1874) today. Will definitely
be back".
Goalkeepers Summer Camp
Shaun Bolton our new first team goalkeeping coach held a three-day
Goalkeeping Summer Camp at The Paycare Ground between 26th and 28th July,
the aim was to show the participants what it is like to play football like a pro.
From training to match days, Shaun has this experience because he was on the
full time coaching staff at West Bromwich Albion working within the Academy
until recently.
The interest in the course was high and resulted in keepers attending from all
levels of grassroots Saturday/Sunday football, between the ages of 7 to 15. On
the first day, shortly after starting, the lads soon realised there was a big jump up
from their normal level of intensity of training to the level of the course, One of
the first things we did was complete the full warm up Darlaston’s keepers have
been doing in pre-season before any training starts, some of the keepers were
saying that “they couldn’t believe that's a warm up it was so hard”. After a quick
break, the group were introduced to Session Plans, pre- planning training
sessions in full, down to how many minutes each section and drill should take,
something that myself and the coaching team here at Darlaston have to work on
all the time. Then back onto
the training ground to
complete the training
session the group had just
planned.
As we stopped for lunch on
the first day we had a visit
from Darlaston’s 21 year old
full back Ryan Kingdon.
Ryan gave the group an
interesting insight to what
it's like playing semiprofessional
football at
Darlaston Town (1874),
which included from what
the players eat before,
during and after games,
tales from the dressing
room, what players get up
to, pranks and jokes they
play on each other, which
player sits where in the
dressing room, even what
music they listen to on
match day days and who
choses it. Ryan was asked
by the lads if he could take
some shots at them and
16
Ryan being Ryan did not
refuse showcasing some
great shots but also
working well with the
kids. There were definitely
some tired, aching limbs
together with tired eyes
at the end of the first day.
Day 2 rolled round very
quickly, everyone hit the
ground running, we hit
training ground straight
off to shake off any
cobwebs from the day
losing any stiffness, aches
or pain from yesterday’s sessions,. We completed drills and exercises that most
of the Darlaston’s players don’t like for example, nightmares this group
absolutely loved them, for what is a very hard running physically demanding drill
they showed the way on how it should be done.
Just before the lunch break we had a very special esteemed guest pop in and see
us Darlaston Town (1874) Chairman Neil Chambers. Some the participants were
shocked to see him and that he had time to explain to the group how our club
runs, what is involved. Neil also gave advice during a long question and answer
session and was as ever looking for the
future of club a new keeper.
The afternoon session based around
playing a game called Goalie Wars as
keepers this is probably the most
enjoyable and highly contested game/
drill we do at any level, kids to pros do
it regularly, it's just 2 goals 2 keepers
throwing and kicking the ball at each
other to score a goal,. It wasn’t all play
as some of the session revolved around
Game Planning which became very
technical, as the afternoon flew by the
group started to to practice their
theories because tomorrow was
competition day.
Our last day of camp soon arrived after
two intense days not only on the
training pitch but also in the classroom.
The day started really well with a
second surprise for the group, “Mr
17
Darlaston”, the Boss, Club Secretary and 35-year servant of the club Gil Preece
was there to greet the group and give permission for them to walk on his
hallowed turf the main pitch. The group started firing all kind of questions about
the ground at him straight away, Gil not only answered them but he showed and
demonstrated most of his answers, Gil was fantastic with the lads taking time
and even allowing some of the group to help in the preparation on the pitch for
the game the following day.
So, the big event was upon us, the eagerly awaited Goalie Wars Competition, it
was winner takes all. The battles some very tough, were fought hard but fair and
there were, but we had
a winner Ben Shields
and our runner up
Callum Cushley, both
winning signed balls
from the first team, so
the camp came to an
end, we looked around
an saw a group of long
sad faces because the
group didn’t want it to
end.
Over the duration of
the course we ran a
competition with the
winner being todays
mascot for the first
game of the season Darlaston against Old Wulfrunians at The Paycare Ground.
The lads earned and were awarded points for the tasks they completed during
the camp, points were given for doing different things for example: coming with
clean boots every day, helping to clear up, answering question how well they
trained, participation with the guests and how they interacted with their fellow
keepers in the group. Over the three days it became intense, with everyone keen
to earn the points need to take the prize, the winner announced just before
everyone left to go home was Olly Shea-Quinn, Olly today will experience a
behind the scenes match day experience, meeting the players, taking part in the
pre match warm up, the first team keepers Mozza (Aaron Morris) and Jay (Jay
Handley) will also present Ollie with a signed pair of gloves. Congratulations and
well done Olly from Shaun and everyone at the club.
I have only mentioned a fraction of what the group did and we will be holding
more Camps during the School holidays. If your area interested speak to Shaun,
or keep an eye on the club website www.darlastontown1874fc.com, together
with our Facebook and Twitter pages to find out when the Camps will be taking
place in the future.
A Look Forward to the Season
Of the 17 teams in Division One this season four are new to us. Gornal
Athletic and Willenhall Town come down from the Premier Division whilst
Allscott FC and Telford Juniors are promoted from Division Two. Hereford
Lads Cub and Wednesfield leave Division One on promotion.
Gornal and Willenhall are both unknown quantities but coming down from
the Premier Division we know they will both be strong. Under the
management of Matt Fisher Gornal had an excellent pre-season win against
Worcester City whilst Willenhall have suffered two heavy pre-season
defeats new boss Joe Ball is well respected and will be looking for a quick
return to the Premier Division.
Of the sides that did well last season Worcester Raiders are again looking
good having retained the services of the Smith brothers who in my opinion
could both play at a much higher level. Tipton Town raised high brows with
a pre-season win against Midland League AFC Wulfs and a good season is
expected having retained the services of most of last season’s squad,
adding several new players including Alex Norris, Connor Asbury and Dan
Hall.
Today’s visitors Old Wulfs are again likely to be in the top six as are
Newport Town who are always tough to beat. Whilst Allscott and Telford
Juniors are new to Darlo fans they are not new to the management team
both teams doing very well in Division Two last season. Promoted sides
generally do well in Division One, both are strong physical sides with some
very good players. Allscott also have an excellent pre-season win against
Wednesfield to their name.
Elsewhere Kington Town have made some impressive signings and have
had a good pre-season record including a 2-2 draw against Premier Division
Wellington. Under the management of former Wolves and Sheffield
Wednesday striker Lee Mills, Team Dudley have made several new
signings whilst St Martins are looking for a better season having signed
several former FC Oswestry players to their ranks. Wem Town looked to
have improved with a win against Evo Stik League Market Drayton under
their belt, whilst Bromyard, Bustleholme, Wem Town, Wyrley and Wrens
Nest have all been busy
