Editorial
A new era begins
August is The House Anniversary. It is always a special month for us. But 2017 is even more
special. That´s because The House Store and a whole new way to monitor student´s
development is launched. Since the idea of the tribes began, the idea was always to use the
rewarding system as a way to motivate people, and the idea of communities to bring people
together. Our system was always hand-made and the control, at one point, was not enough to
follow the fast pace of people´s lives.
That´s when technology plays its part! Students´ money is now controlled via a piece of software
at The House Strudent´s Area and the money they get in classes is now used for buying real
products. It´s a never-seen-before innovation. The idea is that students will try harder and harder
to save money... by getting more money. And that only happens by coming to classes and turning
in tasks. We hope our students really enjoy the new gift!
And we hope you enjoy this edition of The House News. My advice to you: read attentively the
warning on “This Month” section. It may change your life!! See ya around!!!!
Travelling
The English language making the difference!
Many people dream about traveling but they normally forget that traveling is much easier and
funnier when English is not a problem. Our student Lais Borsato tells us about such experience:
“English is a doorway to the whole world because with it the experiences are unique and we have huge
opportunities either to work or to travel. It is common for many students and professionals to go to an
exchange program to learn and practice their English to work in other countries. They normally return to
Brazil with great job opportunities after the experience’’.
The English language today, besides being important, is essential for our lives, because it unites people
and cultures. Learning English is an adventure that goes beyond theory and practice, but to live the
English language makes the difference. I traveled last years and English was necessary. Because of
this I am here at The House. Thank you!”

Spider-Man: Homecoming
Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers
Culture
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made
his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to
navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero
in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with
the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt
May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor
Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his
normal daily routine--distracted by thoughts of proving himself
to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man--
but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new
villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be
threatened.
Proverbs
English Idioms
Since it´s father´s
month, The House
News is giving you
2 cool proverbs with
the word “father”!
Success has many fathers, failure is an orphan: People
are quick to associate themselves with successful ventures
and distance themselves from failures. EXAMPLE: "All the
people who were so excited about this project in the beginning
now act like they've never even heard of it… Well, success has
many fathers, failure is an orphan."
Experience is the father of wisdom, and Experience is the
mother of wisdom: The more that happens to you, the more
you will learn. “I never understood why supervisors got so
frustrated with me until I became a supervisor and got
frustrated with my subordinates. Experience was definitely the
mother of wisdom, in my case.”

The House was born in the hands of Valter Costa, an English teacher that had a different view concerning the teaching of
English. Valter always felt that students were afraid of speaking English because the systems lacked the necessary
structure for the learning process to effectively occur.
Valter also believed that learning a second language is associated with the processes of our memory. A English course that
could provide the memory with the necessary stimulus to process and store information in English and also a fun
atmosphere for students to feel comfortable would be a revolution. That´s how The House appeared!
After 17 years and constantly evolving, The House is finally seen as a landmark in the teaching of English.
This is The House. This is your house.
Vergueiro
Raíssa (?)
My first experience with the first
year of elementary school
I am in the fifth semester of Pedagogy at USP. In this semester, we have to choose something to
teach about Mathematics and Portuguese. I will write about some experiences with Portuguese
that I had in this internship in a public school of Ribeirão Preto.
The first time I had to choose a subject to work with, I chose authorship, the fact of being the writer,
but for that I needed a subject to write about; I had an idea to talk about superheroes of the real life, because kids think that
only Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and characters with cloaks can be heroes, but I had a desire to deconstruct this
idea, showing them that they can be a superhero practicing good attitudes.
I showed them the history of Profeta Gentileza, a man that heard about a tragedy in Niterói, someone set fire to a circus,
when it was crowded, a lot of people died, including kids. Then Gentileza thought a little and said: “I need to help humanity
because they aren't normal, so I'll leave his city to live in Niterói to help that people to overcome that tragedy”. He started to
write sentences of kindness in the walls of that city and distributed flowers to people.
The second super hero was Malala, the Pakistani girl that fought to have an education, because in 2008 a group of
terrorists, Taliban, forbade girls and women to come to school. She thought that this wasn't right and started to write a blog;
she wrote everything about the violence that was happening in her country to show the world that the situation wasn't good.
While I was telling them that story, Samuel, a six year-old, said “I had an idea: I will start to write a blog”, and I said
“interesting, what is the subject of your blog?” He replied: “It is about the mayor of our city, that doesn't do anything for it, until
today we don't have a uniform to come to school, I will expose him to the world, too”,. This time I was astonished, because I
didn't see that one coming, he is only six years old and when I was the same age, I didn't care about politics, after that
comment my hopes have increased.
I think that this internship was pretty good, because they understood everything that my friends and I explained, they are
more kinder now, they are trying to be the new generation of Profeta Gentileza, they are caring more about the education,
they said that they will study more, because in Brazil, despite the fact that something has to change, everybody can study.
I'm very happy with these experiences, because I achieved my goals, they took over the function of writers and understood
that superheroes are normal people that don't use cloaks and do good attitudes.
Do you like reading?
Check out this amazing tip that our student has given us!!
Review – The Girl on the train
If you like to read suspense or thriller books and books which turn into movies, write down the tip
that I will give. Some weeks ago, I finished reading a book called “The girl on the train”, written by
Paula Hawkins, published in 2015.
The story is about Rachel, who every morning takes the same train to work and on the way,
she sees the house number 15 and the lives of the people who live in this house. One
morning, Rachel sees a different scene from everyday and some days after that, Rachel
discovers that Megan, who lives in the house number 15, is missing. So, Rachel decides to
go to the police and tell what she saw. However, she gets involved not only in the story of the
disappearance, but also in the lives of those involved. The book won a movie version,
released in 2016.
In my opinion, “The girl on the train” is a good book and when you start reading it, you can't
stop until you know the end. Besides, the fact of Rachel being involved in Megan's
disappearance leads us to try to unravel this mystery. tentive to the context, and do not
be worried about speaking all the verbal tenses the right way.

My experiences learning English.
Vergueiro
Have you had troubles learning English?
Read this encouraging text from our student at Vergueiro!!
“I would like to share with everyone my experiences learning English from
the last years. I always hear that the English language is easier than
Portuguese or other languages of Latin origins, like Spanish, French, etc.
Therefore, I should thank for being born in a country with a Latin language,
more difficult, and having to learn English, theoretically being easier.
However, that is not so easy.
Then, I had a marathon of courses and methods to learn English, in group
or private classes, in big or small schools, with famous or fresh systems,
presence-based or web-based classes. I have proved and experienced
every kind of novelty.
Despite my disappointment, I understood important things about learning
English. I justified my lack of development in learning English with several
Antônio Carlos França,41- lawyer
excuses: "I prefer to read and listen to speaking and writing."
The truth is one, we have to find and do things that give us pleasure and learning English can be associated to these
things. No matter what it is, movies, songs, traveling, job, friendships, etc. You can use English for everything.
Nowadays, I am here at The House School, because of a friend's recommendation and I found the solution for many
difficulties and excuses. Now, I can advance my English through flexible scheduling of class, homogeneous ages, many
opportunities to practice, like this space to write. The most important thing is to practice and not to be afraid to make
mistakes. That has worked for me.
Thank you for reading and good luck in your studies.
Don't waste time and use your English every time, day by day!”
2English is a doorway to the whole world because …
Pablo Garcia
“The English language is very important nowadays, because globalization makes it
become fundamental. English is the international language of communication with the
whole world. In the job market, English has become an essential attribute for the
achievement of most positions. The globalization has led many Brazilians to go abroad in
order to study, to do business and to spend the vacations. Likewise, many foreigners
have also come to Brazil with the same purposes. And what is the most used language to
communicate with them? Again, English! Although there are many professionals that
speak it fluently, it is still a differential, depending on the level of speaking, to get higher
positions. In conclusion, if you want to get into the job market and earn a good amount of
money, you should dedicate to learn English well.”
Leonardo Pereira Santos
“English is a doorway to the whole world because in each other part of the world
there is someone that speaks English and I can be one of them.”
Anderson Luís da Silva Moura
“English is a doorway to the whole world because it is global. Think about a situation:
you work at a multinational company and there's the possibility to go to a better
position, but one of the requirements is English.
Every time we think that learn English is not necessary because our language is
Portuguese, but we are wrong! Technology, movies, music, food and the places
where most people want to go to, a little English is present… So what are you waiting
for to learn this language of the future? The choice is on your hands. Take it!”
Pedro Henrique dos Santos
“English is a doorway to the whole world because many countries choose it as a
second language and consequently, we can say it is universal!”
Kaio Mandello Rechia
“English is a doorway to the whole world because it is everywhere: music, movies,
among others. English is the language that dominated the world, especially when it
comes to work. The globalized world, all companies and countries became "closer",
always using English for communication and also to travel, to know other countries
without embarrassment… Knowing English communication is much easier in any
country in the world. So, English is very important in our lives and it is becoming more

that changed the women's lives completely.
In 1971, after much work, and at the urging of the U.S.
Representative, Bella Abzug, the Congress
designated August 26 in each year as “Women's
Equality Day.” This day was selected to
commemorate the passage of the 19th Alteration to
the Constitution on August 26th, in 1920. This change
gave women the right to vote. This was the
culmination of decades of effort by women
suffragettes and other groups. Their efforts dated
back to first women's rights convention in 1848 at
Seneca Falls, New York.
And now, thinking about the present time, we can
realize that certainly those 72 years of campaigning
served as practice for this year's historic elections
considering that for the first time, a woman is the
presidential candidate of a major party of United
States.
However, this big step is controvertial when
compered to the violence suffered, no only physically,
but psychologically, and to the irregular salaries
earned in equal positions, where the unique
difference is the sex.
In conclusion, the first thing to do is not forget about
the unbalanced equality that women still pass
through. Women's rights groups suggest you
continue to be involved in pursuing full and equal
rights for women in all areas and in all issues.
We
can
do it!

Father´s day
Father's Day is an occasion to mark
and celebrate the contribution that your
father has made to your life. Many
people send or give cards or gifts to their
fathers. Common Father's Day gifts
include sports items or clothing,
electronic gadgets, outdoor cooking
supplies and tools for household
maintenance.
Father's Day is a relatively modern
holiday so different families have a
range of traditions. These can range
from a simple phone call or greetings
card to large parties honoring all of the
'father' figures in a particular extended
family. Father figures can include
fathers, step-fathers, fathers-in-law,
grandfathers and great-grandfathers
and even other male relatives. In the
days and weeks before Father's Day,
many schools and Sunday schools help
their pupils to prepare a handmade card
or small gift for their fathers.
But how did it start? There are a range of
events, which may have inspired the
idea of Father's Day.
One of these was the start of the
Mother's Day tradition in the first
decade of the 20th century. Another
was a memorial service held in 1908 for
a large group of men, many of them
fathers, who were killed in a mining
accident in Monongah, West Virginia in
December 1907.
A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd
was an influential figure in the
establishment of Father's Day. Her
father raised six children by himself
after the death of their mother.
This was uncommon at that time, as
many widowers placed their children in
the care of others or quickly married
again.
Sonora was inspired by the work of
Anna Jarvis, who had pushed for
Mother's Day celebrations. Sonora felt
that her father deserved recognition for
what he had done. The first time
Father's Day was held in June was in
1910. Father's Day was officially
recognized as a holiday in 1972 by
President Nixon.

Social project
Fábrica de Talentos
Fábrica de Talentos is a social program that really works! Imec
combines two activities in one single Project that not help helps
teenagers´ physical skills, but also makes them ready for the
job market. Training with Luta Regional Bahiana and The
house English classes really make a huge difference in their
lives! Teachers from The House like our famous teacher Varoto
came from this Project. Today we hear from Larissa and
Angeline, two girls that work at the Campos Salles Unit that
really can show that the Project Works, and Works well.
Name: Angeline Oliveira da Silva
Age: 19
Secretary, the House
“I knew The House in 2011. I was 14 years old and I started to be part
of the social project of Instituto Mascote where I had English and
capoeira classes. I really loved the classes, the teachers, the team of
The House (employees), but some problems made me stop with the
classes. Two years ago I came back and started as a The House
student and now I am a part of The House Team.”
Name: Larissa Nóbrega
Age: 17
Receptionist at The House
“I had the opportunity to study in Fábrica de Talentos when the director
and the Project teachers went to my old school, in August 2016. For me,
having both grammar and speaking classes totally in English makes a lot
easier to learn the language. The capoeira classes weren't just good
because of the physical benefit that come with it, but I also learned a lot
about how Brazil culture was built and influenced by different people,
with different stories and hardships, that made this country the diversified
place it is today… and now I am also a part of The House Team.”

Sports
Barons of Ribeirão Preto
Founded in 2014, Barões de Ribeirão Preto is an american football team created to
help spread the sport in the area. With around 60 athletes ranging from ages 18 to
32, the team has a sporting and social project, with values such as team work, respect,
determination, commitment and union, gathering in their selections more and more young
people dedicated to the sport.
American football is one of the sports that have been growing the most in popularity in Brazil,
and there are already over 300 teams between the Flag and Fullpad modalities.
With government and private incentives, it tends to grow even more. Our country is the second
largest consumer, only behind its original country, the United States of America.
In this second semester, Barões will compete on its first Championship: the Copa Mogiana de
Futebol Americano , where it will face teams from São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Its first game will
be against Carrascos, in Franca-SP, on the 12th of August. The team players are focusing on
training sessions that should prepare them for victory.
To know more about the team's work, visit the Barões' facebook page:
www.facebook.com/baroesderibeiraopreto
or their training center at 410, José Jorge de Freitas street, in Jardim Manoel da Penna.

English JOKE
‘‘The perfect son’’
This joke uses "misdirection". The language
gets us to think one way, so in the end we get
a surprise. Enjoy!
Woman A told Woman B, 'I have the (1)
perfect son'.
Woman B asked, 'Does he (2) smoke?'
Woman A answered, 'No, he doesn't'.
Woman B: 'Does he drink (3) whiskey?'
Woman A: 'No, he doesn't'.
Woman B: 'Does he ever come home
late?'
Woman A: 'No, he doesn't'.
Woman B: (4) 'I guess you really do have
the perfect son. How old is he?'
Woman A: "He will be six months old next
Wednesday' .
(1) he has no bad points (he is 100% good!)
(2) smoke cigarettes (tobacco)
(3) very strong alcohol
(4) she believes it must be true (7) not good
looking
Horoscope
Virgo
August 23
September 22
Of course Woman B believed Woman A's
son was grown up. Since she believed it,
we also believed it. Surprise!
As soon as the Sun conjoins Pluto in Capricorn on January 7, the year 2017
will blast off into an adventure of work and career possibilities for Virgos. Your
planet Mercury will be in Capricorn, too. Thoughts and ideas to move you
ahead will be abundant and achievable all year.
January also starts with a mystic and mystifying conjunction of Mars and
Neptune in Pisces. You'll be looking into the face of magic all year long, and
you'll be able to tell what's real from what's illusion. That's an advantage that
very few people will have.
The Moon and Venus conjunct in Aquarius smooths out many social and
relationship issues. You will be able to see and think more clearly about others
than perhaps they can themselves.
The most important celestial signal might be the conjunction of Mars and
the Lunar North Node in Leo on the day that the Sun enters Virgo.
You normally act with great consideration and compassion. This year, what
you do may more often have karmic implications with soul connections to
improve your life. Your more playful, dramatic actions could have deeper,
more subtle and long-reaching consequences.
The third of this year's four Mercury retrogrades starts in Virgo on August
12 and ends in Leo on September 5. You can have some of your best and most
successful moments of the year now. They may not look great in the moment,
but they are.

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.

Saved successfully!

Ooh no, something went wrong!
