BALANCE
BETWEEN HYGIENE,
ACOUSTICS AND AESTHETICS
Wherever healthcare facilities are built or modernised, they
create a challenge for clients, architects and planners. Strict
hygiene regulations must be observed. Comfortable acoustics
should also aid a person’s well-being. The building must be
functional and yet aesthetically attractive in order to please
the eye.
Optimal ceiling for every room
With the interplay of hygiene, acoustics and aesthetics, the
ceiling construction plays a central role. The selection of the
optimum ceiling system depends on the use of the room. Whilst
hygiene is of paramount importance in operating theatres and
intensive care units, sound protection and room acoustics are
particular demands for corridors and foyers. In patient rooms,
the ceiling contributes both in optic and function in creating
a feeling of well-being. In sanitary areas and kitchens, the
ceiling also has to withstand high humidity.
The Knauf AMF hygiene range
In our Knauf AMF hygiene range, you will find the most
suitable ceiling system for every application area in healthcare
facilities. Choose from a wide range of high quality products
CLASSIFIED
IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE
HOSPITAL STANDARD NF S 90-351
When it comes to air purification and control
in healthcare facilities, you cannot avoid the
French hospital standard NF S 90-351. It is to
date the most important and strictest standard
for healthcare facilities, which is currently being
discussed in European regulations. The standard
classifies different application areas into four risk
zones. The selection of a suitable hygiene-tested
ceiling system is also dictated by these zones.
(see also p21 onward).
The French standard NF S 90-351 classifies rooms of healthcare facilities into four risk zones:
SPOTLESS
PREVENTS GERMS
Our Knauf AMF ceiling systems with Hygena coating have additionally been tested
(JIS Z 2801 or ISO 22196) for the following germs:
Proteus mirabilis
• Proteus mirabilis is a facultative, pathogenic bacterium, found in the colon of healthy individuals and does not necessarily
cause diseases. Immunocompromised individuals may suffer from the following problems caused by this bacterium: urinary
tract infections, infected wounds, pneumonia and sepsis.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
• This bacterium is a widely spread soil and water based germ, found in sinks, showers and toilets etc. and is therefore
regarded as a major hospital germ. As the germs exhibit multiple resistance to antibiotics, due to its metabolism and
membrane structure, it is the most frequently occurring hospital germ, causing 10% of all hospital infections in Germany.
Clostridium difficile
• Clostridium difficile is a harmless intestinal bacterium in healthy people. However, if competing types of normal intestinal
flora are disrupted by antibiotics, C. difficile can proliferate and produce toxins which can lead to life-threatening diarrhoea.
Aspergillus niger
• Is also called black mold due to its dark spores. Aspergillus niger is a major spoiler of food and destroys materials. Illnesses
caused by Aspergillus niger include infections of the external auditory canal, pulmonary aspergillosis, abdominal inflammation,
endocarditis, nail diseases and also skin infections, in addition to allergic reactions.
Knauf AMF products with Hygiena coating display a clear antimicrobial effect.
8
Candida albicans
• Is a certain type of the fungus genus Candida and the most common cause of so-called Candidiasis (an infectious disease
with Candida-fungi). Candida is a yeast which can particularly settle on mucous membranes in the genital area, mouththroat
or intestine. C. albicans belongs to the facultative pathogens (only causing illness under certain conditions) and is a
saprobiont, living in equilibrium with human immune defense and other microorganisms.
Escherichia coli
• Escherichia coli is an enterobacteria belonging to the important genus Escherichia and occurs in human and animal
intestines. However, some serotypes have a pronounced intestinal pathogenicity (such as EHEC - enterohemorrhagic
Escherichia coli) and cause 160 million cases of diarrhoea and 1 million deaths per year.
Staphylococcus aureus
• Staphylococcus aureus occurs almost everywhere in nature and approximately 25 to 30 % of the population carries it on
their skin and in the upper respiratory tract. Usually it does not cause any symptoms of illness but for immunocompromised
people it can lead to life-threating illnesses. It has become well-known in the form of MRSA, originally methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus, meanwhile also called multi-resistant, as it shows resistance to other antibiotics.
Enterococcus faecium
• Enterococcus faecium is a bacterial species found in the intestine of humans and animals. The pathogenic strains cause
nosocomial infections (i.e. hospital infections) in people with weakened immune systems. Due to the resistance of the
pathogen, the diseases are very difficult to treat, making the vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (faecium) (VRE) one of the
most difficult to control germs of all.
CONVINCING
IN ALL CLEAN ROOM
CLASSES
Cleanrooms are essential for medical research and the handling and sterile
production of pharmaceuticals. They enable different parameters, such as
particle number, germ number, temperature, humidity, and pressure to be
exactly monitored and controlled. This ensures that the existing air and intake air
has a high purity and fulfils all cleanliness criteria. This helps to protect patients
and ensures the quality of medical products.
Air purity classification
The air purity classification according to DIN EN ISO
14644-1 is the most well-known standard in the
area of cleanroom technology. It states the maximum
number of particles in the ambient air and divides the
cleanrooms into classes from ISO 1 to ISO 9, with class
1 being the highest specification for air purity.
It should be noted that clean rooms with classes 1 to
5 according to ISO 14644-1 require a high filter area
and the use of ceiling elements is not always possible.
Clean rooms with horizontal displacement flow form an
exception to this.
Testing method
Highly sensitive measuring equipment can determine the number of particles
present in the ambient air of cleanrooms. Determining the number of airborne
particles enables the classification of materials. Cleanrooms are classified
depending on the number of measured particles per cubic metre. The only
particle groups to be considered are those with a cumulative frequency
distribution between the critical particle sizes (lower limit) of 0.1 μm and 5 μm.
LOW MAINTENANCE AND
EASY
TO CLEAN
General
Knauf AMF ceiling tiles are available with many different surface finishes. The
different finishes can be cleaned using different methods. Normally ceiling tiles
do not need to be cleaned in most standard applications. However, it may be
necessary to carry out cleaning in some situations.
Methods
The following cleaning methods cannot be used on all surfaces. Refer to the
table “overview of cleaning methods” for suitability.
(1) Dry cleaning
For standard cleaning of dust, loose dirt and/or deposits, a normal vacuum
cleaner fitted with a soft brush can be used.
(2) Damp cleaning
For more intensive cleaning, the surfaces can be damp cleaned. This should be
carried out with a wrung-out soft cloth or sponge. After cleaning, the surfaces
of the tile should be dried with a soft cloth.
(3) Wet cleaning
Wet cleaning should be carried out with lukewarm water (up to 40°C), using
a sponge and mild cleaning agent (with a pH value between 7 and 9). It is important
that the edges and the reverse side of the tile do not come into contact
with moisture. After cleaning the surface should be dried with a soft cloth.
14
(4) Pressure cleaning
Pressure cleaning is only for ceilings with an exposed grid
construction (system C, edge SK), carried out with the
following restrictions:
Water temperature: max. 40°
Working pressure: max. 80 bar, with a flow rate of
max. 500 l/h betragen
Spray angle (nozzle): min. 30°
Minimum distance: 1,0 m (nozzle – mineral fibre surface)
Water should be prevented from penetrating the grid structure.
After cleaning, the surface should be dried.
Note:
The mechanical stresses of cleaning (scrubbing) may lead to changes to the surface. Highly adhesive dirt (grease,
oils, acids and bases) can be resistant to cleaning and can affect the surface permanently. It is recommended to test
the proposed cleaning method on a sample piece or a non-visible part of the ceiling. Cleaning should also be carried
out over a large area and not limited to individual tiles or small areas.
Tile types
Not all mineral tile surfaces are suitable for wet cleaning or high pressure cleaning. The appropriate cleaning
methods are set out in the table below:
Cleaning agents
Generally, surfaces should only be treated with water or using a mild cleaning agent (pH value between 7 and 9).
It is recommended to test and assess the proposed cleaning method on a sample piece or non-visible part of the
ceiling to rule out colour reactions with the cleaning agent as well as scrubbing effects. Abrasive cleaners are not
suitable and may not be used.
Note
Increased humidity due to regular cleaning or climate conditions means that enhanced corrosion protection
requirements with regard to the supporting grid and fixings may be necessary. When the suspended ceiling is
subject to uplift pressure loading, further measures again may be necessary dependant on the installation.
15
RESISTANT EVEN WITH HIGH
HUMIDITY
Humidity
Humidity has a significant influence on the stability and structure of a mineral
ceiling and therefore its longevity. High levels of water vapour content can lead
in many cases to a loss of dimensional stability and deformation. Air behaves
similarly to a sponge and can, dependent on the temperature take in water in the
form of vapour.
Example with 1 bar air pressure
At 20° C the total absorption capacity of air is approximately
14.7 g/kg. If instead, the actual water content was 8.7 g/kg
(=absolute humidity), this would result in a relative humidity
of 60 %. If this air were then cooled, the water content would
not change, however the absorption capacity of the air
reduces. As a consequence the relative humidity increases to
an extent, until at approximately 12° C, saturation is reached,
beyond which no more water vapour can be absorbed
(dew point). By further cooling, the excess water vapour
condenses and leads to water droplet formation. Air at 0°
C, can in comparison only absorb a maximum of 3.7 g/kg of
water until it reaches saturation.
= 20° C x = 14.7 g/kg = 100 %
= 20° C x = 8.7 g/kg = 60 %
= 0° C x = 3.8 g/kg = 100 %
If unsuitable materials are used in these critical areas with increased humidity, in
many cases it can lead to adverse visual effects or even structural damage.
THERMATEX ® Aquatec can also be used in areas with upto 100% relative humidity,
without any problems.
WELL-BEING WITH
A PLEASANT
AMBIENCE
AND OPTIMUM ACOUSTICS
Individual ceiling systems for an
optimum feel-good climate
For people who work here and also for those who
come and go, the room climate plays a major role. An
optimum feel-good climate promotes concentration and
performance. Using bespoke ceiling solutions, various
parameters such as room acoustics, design and lighting
can be optimised for individual requirements depending
on application.
In zone A of the French hospital standard NF S 90-351
are rooms within healthcare facilities, which do not
place particularly high hygiene requirements on the
construction or activities. They are general areas such
as foyers and corridors, offices and meeting rooms as
well as administration areas – from the caretaker’s
room to the post room. The probability of being infected
by hospital germs, bacteria or fungi in one of these
rooms is relatively low.
Sound optimised havens and a feast for the eyes
Our Knauf AMF ceiling systems offer you the best sound
absorption values and give you the greatest possible
freedom of design. They are particularly impressive
in heavily frequented corridors and foyers, where
they effectively absorb disturbing noises, voices and
noise. Peace and comfort arise. The timelessly elegant
designs with a wide variety of surfaces and colours also
offer high aesthetic value. They contribute to a light and
healthy, feel-good ambience.
Kitchen areas
In patient rooms and consultation rooms, an endless stream
of patients, doctors, therapists, nursing and cleaning staff
are coming and going. It is in the nature of things that germs
and bacteria will spread in these environments. The French
hospital standard NF S 90-351 classifies these rooms with
average hygienic relevance, along with sanitary facilities
(patient bathrooms, visitor toilets etc.), rehabilitation rooms
or kitchens and food storage rooms.
HIGH PERFORMANCE FOR
INCREASED
DEMANDS
solutions are required to meet the increased hygiene
requirements and create a positive and comfortable
room climate. In addition to sound-absorbing properties,
optically effective design elements are also included.
After all, the patient usually lies in bed and often stares
at the ceiling.
Water vapour and humidity
In hospitals and nursing homes, the humidity level
in rooms is a very important factor to consider. In
principle, the relative air humidity should always be
in a healthy, acceptable range (generally between 40
and 60 percent), so that patients and staff feel equally
well and comfortable. In addition, moisture is released
by permanently cleaning the rooms, not to mention
the development of humidity in sanitary facilities and
kitchens. For this reason, Knauf AMF also provides
ceiling systems (grid systems and ceiling tiles) in our
hygiene range, which are resistant to high humidity in
the long term.
Healthy ceilings in patient rooms
Patient rooms pose special requirements for ceiling
systems. They should contribute to a healthy, comfortable
room climate, where the patient feels content, which
in turn promotes the recovery process. Here, ceiling
High hygienic relevance
An eye slowly opens in the recovery room, familiar lines on
HIGHLY DEVELOPED FOR
SENSITIVE
AREAS
Special products for intensive care and air showers
Wherever serious (often life-threatening) diseases and
injuries have to be treated, particularly strict hygienic
measures must be taken. Intensive care units therefore
differ massively from other hospital areas. They are highly
functional and allow optimal patient care in a germ-free
environment. As a rule, they can only be entered via air
showers. Thus, the import of germs is prevented.
In these sensitive areas, highly sophisticated special
products from our hygiene range are used, which have
been tested and verified as having a preventive effect
against germs.
Specific conditions and application areas require
special attention. Every room in zone C, according to
the French hospital standard NF S 90-351 is a sensitive
area such as a recovery room, intensive care unit,
rooms for “small” operative procedures, delivery rooms
and baby rooms.
The risk of already weak people or people in exceptional,
physical conditions becoming infected with germs
or infectious diseases is relatively high. The hygiene
requirements for the construction of these zones and
the measures taken within them are also accordingly
high.
Consultation rooms and laboratories
The ceiling systems developed for zones of high
hygienic relevance are also suitable for use in autopsy
rooms, sterilisation areas, laboratories, examination
and treatment rooms etc. In addition to hygiene, our
solutions also include acoustic, design and economic
factors.
Very high hygienic relevance
Sterile order on the instrument table, calm, rhythmic breathing
noises and full concentration during the surgical procedure: When
recommendation for the ceiling: the hygiene-tested high-end
OPERATING THEATRES
35
HIGH-END FOR
SURGICAL
PROCEDURES
DZone D
Very high hygienic relevance
Operating theatres
Operating theatres and departments within zone D are
the top tier of hospital design according to the French
hospital standard NF S 90-351 – the highest hygiene
level. Primarily, germs and pathogens are prevented
from entering the patient‘s open wound during the
surgical procedure, but the protection of the operating
team against infections is also of central importance.
Sterile zones, anaesthesia rooms, scrubbing areas and
air showers must also comply with the highest hygiene
standards.
Ceiling systems for the highest hygiene
requirements
Our Knauf AMF ceiling systems for operating theatres
and departments are technical high-end products that
meet the highest hygiene requirements. They have
a preventive effect against germs and prevent the
accumulation of pathogens, bacteria and fungi. Moreover,
they are robust, disinfectant-resistant, low maintenance
and, if necessary, easy to clean.
Complete harmonic systems for operating theatre
ceilings
In addition to the hygienic aspects, special functional
requirements must also be observed when constructing
operating theatres. Ceiling supply units, video
management systems, lighting systems and ventilation
components, etc. must be integrated and combined
within the ceiling to create a complete, harmonious
system. Hygienically perfect, highly functional and
aesthetically pleasing.
It should be noted that clean rooms with classes 1 to
5 according to ISO 14644-1 require a high filter area
and the use of ceiling elements is not always possible.
Clean rooms with horizontal displacement flow form an
exception to this.
