In March 2004, <strong>the</strong> Italian state<br />
railway Trenitalia and Cisalp<strong>in</strong>o – a<br />
jo<strong>in</strong>t venture of Trenitalia and Swiss<br />
Federal Railways (SBB) - ordered a<br />
total of 26 PENDOLINOs. The<br />
electric high speed tra<strong>in</strong>s are <strong>the</strong><br />
first vehicles with Alstom fourth<br />
generation tilt<strong>in</strong>g systems by<br />
means of which travel<strong>in</strong>g times on<br />
conventional l<strong>in</strong>es can be reduced<br />
by 15 to 30%.<br />
Start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> November 2006, 12 of<br />
<strong>the</strong> seven-car tra<strong>in</strong>s will be added<br />
to <strong>the</strong> fleet of 40 PENDOLINOs and<br />
60 ETR 500 tra<strong>in</strong>s that already<br />
service <strong>the</strong> Trenitalia high-speed<br />
l<strong>in</strong>es. The 14 tra<strong>in</strong> compositions for<br />
Cisalp<strong>in</strong>o are <strong>in</strong>tended, among<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs, for cross-border traffic<br />
between Italy and Switzerland. In<br />
time for <strong>the</strong> schedule change <strong>in</strong><br />
December 2007 and for <strong>the</strong><br />
open<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Lötschberg base<br />
tunnel, <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>s will take up<br />
service at Cisalp<strong>in</strong>o as ETR 610.<br />

spherical pla<strong>in</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>gs for two<br />

as well as <strong>the</strong> complete bear<strong>in</strong>g<br />
sets for <strong>the</strong> gearboxes.

<strong>Bear<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bolster <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
tilt<strong>in</strong>g mechanism<br />
The tilt<strong>in</strong>g motion of <strong>the</strong> superstructure is made<br />
possible by a bolster that is <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> bogie<br />
and onto which <strong>the</strong> superstructure is mounted. The<br />
bolster is connected to <strong>the</strong> bogie via four connect<strong>in</strong>g<br />
rods. Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance-free standard <strong>ELGES</strong> spherical pla<strong>in</strong><br />
bear<strong>in</strong>gs GE60UK-2RS are used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> connect<strong>in</strong>g rod<br />
eyes. This solution, which is already used successfully<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ICE-T fleet of DB, provides a cost-effective and<br />
reliable bear<strong>in</strong>g mount<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Superstructure stabilization<br />
Functional pr<strong>in</strong>ciple<br />
Dynamic forces act<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>s dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> journey<br />
cause roll<strong>in</strong>g and sideways motions of <strong>the</strong> superstructure<br />
relative to <strong>the</strong> longitud<strong>in</strong>al axis of <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>.<br />
So-called anti-roll bars are used to reduce <strong>the</strong>se<br />
motions. Anti-roll bars function like a torque rod,<br />
generat<strong>in</strong>g readjustment forces between superstructure<br />
and bogie that are opposed to <strong>the</strong> motions, stabiliz<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> superstructure.<br />
Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance-free <strong>ELGES</strong> radial spherical pla<strong>in</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
with an ELGOGLIDE ® slid<strong>in</strong>g layer are used at <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ts<br />
of this highly dynamic application. The unprotected<br />
position of <strong>the</strong> radial spherical pla<strong>in</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>gs, direct<br />
exposure to environmental conditions and <strong>the</strong><br />
demanded life of more than 2.5 million kilometers<br />
require an efficient seal<strong>in</strong>g system.<br />
<strong>ELGES</strong> special spherical pla<strong>in</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>gs with bellows<br />
The special spherical pla<strong>in</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>gs that were<br />
developed especially for this application is sealed by<br />
means of bellows whose geometry was optimized for<br />
<strong>the</strong> necessary large motion angles (slew<strong>in</strong>g angle<br />
+/- 20°; tilt<strong>in</strong>g angle +/- 19°) by means of FEM<br />
analysis.<br />
The bear<strong>in</strong>gs’ reliability with regard to life, max. jo<strong>in</strong>t<br />
angle, tightness and resistance to aggressive<br />
substances was proved <strong>in</strong> extensive tests. The bellows<br />
material has already been used successfully for ca.<br />
10 years <strong>in</strong> similar applications <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> automotive<br />
sector.<br />
The bear<strong>in</strong>g, which is located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />
structure by snap r<strong>in</strong>gs and spacer sleeves, is easy to<br />
mount and dismount, reduc<strong>in</strong>g costs for manufacturer<br />
and operator alike.<br />
Gearbox bear<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
The gearbox built by ALSTOM Savigliano is a s<strong>in</strong>glestage<br />
bevel gearbox which is driven via a universal<br />
jo<strong>in</strong>t shaft. The p<strong>in</strong>ion shaft is supported <strong>in</strong> a<br />
cyl<strong>in</strong>drical roller bear<strong>in</strong>g that is based on type NU317-E<br />
and a four po<strong>in</strong>t bear<strong>in</strong>g QJ318-N2. The r<strong>in</strong>g gear of <strong>the</strong><br />
output shaft is supported on one side <strong>in</strong> a cyl<strong>in</strong>drical<br />
roller bear<strong>in</strong>g NU1040-E. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side, support is<br />
provided by two tapered roller bear<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong><br />
X-arrangement.<br />
All bear<strong>in</strong>gs are lubricated with oil, supplied by <strong>the</strong> oil<br />
circuit for <strong>the</strong> gear<strong>in</strong>g. Cage design and bear<strong>in</strong>g<br />
clearance were adapted to meet <strong>the</strong> requirements of<br />
this application.<br />
<strong>Schaeffler</strong> <strong>Group</strong> Industrial had already supplied <strong>the</strong><br />
bear<strong>in</strong>gs for <strong>the</strong> gearboxes of <strong>the</strong> predecessor versions.<br />
