EDITOR’s note
Hello August, where Raya season is over and
working people are looking forward to that long
Independence Day weekend. Hope there are
some travelling plans in the works. Speaking of travelling,
I journeyed to the capital of Indonesia for some fun in the
city. Read all about it in the ‘Millennials Guide to Jakarta’
on page 18. To be honest, I thought I wasn’t capable of
writing that article because I thought I was too old to be a
millennial. Turns out, I’m in that age bracket. #foreveryoung
My love for shoes is evident in our shopping feature
where I list down some of the hottest local shoe designers
in Malaysia that create all types of shoes for every
occasion. Some of them are even travel-friendly!
Our ‘Road Less Taken’ highlights a hillside town
called Shimla in India which I discovered while browsing
through British series and came upon a show called ‘Indian
Summers’. Shimla now is a popular honeymoon spot
especially during winter so check it out on page 24.
Happy Independence Day guys! In case you don’t
know, it is our 60th year of independence.
A CONNOISSEUR OF TRAVEL BY PASSION, THE BIRD MAN COMES WITH
AN EXCEPTIONALLY KEEN SENSE TO HELP UNRAVEL THE COLOURFUL AND
COMPLICATED WORLD WE LIVE IN TODAY. OPINIONATED HE MAY BE BUT HIS RARE
COMBINATION OF A NEWSMAKER’S MIND AND BEING A NATURAL BON VIVANT
DOES INDEED MAKE SCRUMPTIOUS FOOD FOR THOUGHT. ENJOY!
RECENT NEWS WAS SPREAD ABOUT CUSTOMERS QUEUING
UP HOURS AT A CHAR KUEY TEOW STALL IN PENANG. ARE
THESE TYPES OF GOOD AND FAMOUS FOOD WORTH EATING?
Forming a bee line is always an island culture. No harm as this
past-time activity does not harm our environment. Queuing for
“good food” is a norm, especially those small islands with not much
diversity in food. Our neighboring country shouts nothing except
Chili Crab. So, nothing wrong with Penang being proud of their Char
Kuey Teow.
“Good” and “Famous” are two separate issues. With the rise
of social media, popularity is a mere commodity that can be easily
acquired with a small price. If fake news can be more popular than
the genuine one, to worship “good” food viraling in social media is
simply foolish.
WHAT WOULD THE BIRDMAN LINE UP FOR? OR WOULD HE
JUST PAY SOMEONE TO DO THE LINING UP?
Never, life is short. To line up for 3 hours, even if it’s free is so
disrespectful to one’s life. It simply means taking away 12.5% of
our precious life in a day. Why not contribute this valuable 12.5%
of your life to some meaningful deeds? Spend quality time in an
orphanage telling stories to kids or cleaning up toilets in old folk’s
home. Or just mingling around in local pub. Making the world a
better place is not too difficult. I shall never shorten my stay in this
planet by lining up. Getting someone to line up? Never. Not even
asking my pet. If lining up is committing suicide, asking others to do
so is homicide.
HOW IMPORTANT IS IT AS AN ADULT TO TREAT YOURSELF TO
A SPA DAY OR MASSAGE?
A spa treatment for pets is worth hundreds of ringgit in Klang Valley
and you need to book weeks in advance. Unless you cannot afford
a treatment, or you think the pets deserve better than you, please
enjoy it at least once a week (this should be followed by an SPA
advertisement on the bottom. Business opportunity, dear GAP).
Now Boarding
A veteran in the Malaysian fashion scene, Benjamin Toong is
the go-to man if you want to make a start as a model. He now
teaches up-and-coming models the ways of the runway and
tells us that he’s been a frequent traveller since before his
fashion days. Here is the scoop on Benjamin Toong.
INTERVIEWED BY AISHAH AZALI • PHOTOS BY BENJAMIN TOONG
How did you enter the modelling
business and became a runway coach?
I entered the modelling business after
helping some Malaysia couturiers to
arrange fashion shows for a few years. I
ended up organizing more than 100 fashion
shows. I became a runway coach after
local supermodel Amber Chia hired me
as a trainer and mentor for her modelling
academy.
Which model do you think has the
most confident runway walk right
now?
Local models, Kelly Jagan and Tinie.
What is your favourite piece of
footwear to bring during your travels?
My Adidas NMD Camouflage Edition
sneakers.
Have you ever travelled by yourself
for a holiday?
Yes, I always travel alone for holidays at
least 4 times a year.
Between internet and music, which
one do you think you can’t live
without while travelling?
Internet.
What is the first thing you do when
you board an airplane?
I always try to look for an empty aisle seat
if I am not assigned to one.
Where is a place that you recently
visited that you would highly
recommend to your friends?
Maldives.
Are you a big shopper when you travel
abroad?
I was a big shopper when I was part of
the Malaysian Airlines cabin crew for 12
years where I travelled to many European
countries. That’s why my closet is so full
now.
Who influences your sense of
fashion?
No one in particular. I have always had my
own sense of style since I was very young.
But nowadays, I mostly like to wear very
comfortable outfits.
Where are the best countries that
your work has brought you?
TAKE A RIDE OF THE MODERN SIDE AS WE INTRODUCE NIFTY
GADGETS AND APPS TO USE FOR TRAVELLERS THAT ENJOY THE
OPEN ROAD OF GOING ON A ROAD TRIP. PUT ON YOUR SEATBELTS
BECAUSE CROSS COUNTRY TRAVELING ON FOUR-WHEELS HAS
NEVER BEEN THIS EASY.
WORDS BY RACHEL FONG • PHOTOS BY ILI, TRACKR, GOOGLE TRIPS & HERE WEGO
Say what you will about technology, but there's no denying how much
of a step-up it's given to those of us with an imperishable sense of
wanderlust. With Wi-Fi and handheld devices, formerly complicated
processes like booking flights, looking up cheap accommodations and
planning efficient itineraries have become simple - anyone could do it.
Oh, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. More and more apps and gadgets
have popped up over the last 5 years, aimed at the independent/nomadic
traveller. Here are some of the top gadgets and apps that have stepped
up to solve the most common conundrums faced by most road-trippers,
whether amateur or seasoned:
GADGETS
Ili
Billed as a ‘wearable translator’, Ili aims to eliminate one of the biggest
barriers known to anyone who travels - language, by translating your
sentences into ones that can be understood by the locals. Better yet, it
doesn’t rely on Wi-Fi, as all your sentences are translated using a preinstalled
software that has been programmed with an extensive library of
common travel phrases. Ili covers phrases in areas such as dining, shopping,
directions and greetings.
Currently, Ili can translate sentences in either English to Mandarin,
Japanese or Spanish, or Mandarin to English or Japanese. Users may
customise their device with more languages in the future.
PRICE: $199 ($249 once pre-order sales end)
TrackR
If you’re especially forgetful, TrackR might just
be what you need. It’s a Bluetooth-enabled,
coin sized tracker device that can be attached to
virtually anything (e.g. keys and wallet), and helps
you find them through a connected smartphone
app. Alternatively, if your phone’s the one that is
missing, you can also press a button on your TrackR
to ring said phone, even while it’s on silent mode.
If your item has been lost outside of your
phone’s Bluetooth range, TrackR can still detect
it, thanks to the Crowd Locate feature. The app is
programmed to record the last known location of
your item, and once another TrackR user comes
within Bluetooth range, that new location will
automatically be updated in your app. There are
said to be millions of TrackR users already, so
finding your item this way should be a cinch.
Google Trips
Google is a household name no doubt, but not many
may know that they actually came out with an app just
for trips in 2016! Aimed at simplifying trip planning,
Google Trips is a one-stop for viewing flight and hotel
information, customising itineraries, figuring out how
to get around and getting updates on the local weather
and opening hours.
If you’re travelling to one of the top 200 most
popular cities in the world, one of Trips’ most useful
features is ‘Day plans’, which maps out your whole day
by suggesting the city’s most hyped about attractions,
markets, museums and many more. Once you’re
connected to Wi-Fi, the app can even suggest changes
in the itinerary depending on the time of day and
weather (e.g. indoor activities when there is a forecast
of rain).
Much like Google Maps, Trips also works offline.
As soon as you get a cellular connection, you may save
essentials like maps, itineraries, and flight info for later
access at a Wi-Fi-less location.
AVAILABLE for iOS and Android
PRICE: Free
FYIAPPS
HERE WeGo
One of the most daunting things about a road trip
is having to determine how to get from Point A to B
by yourself, but with HERE WeGo, it doesn’t have to
be. The app contains public transit information for a
whopping 1,300 cities (and counting), and lets you
weigh your options depending on price, journey time
and transportation type. With a cellular connection,
the app can also factor in real-time traffic updates to
bring you the latest and most efficient routes. HERE
WeGo has friends in high places to give it a leg up as
well, partnering with other traveller favourites like
Expedia and TripAdvisor to provide suggestions for
nearby places of interest like pharmacies, ATMs and
taxi stands.
Of course, a travel app these days is not complete
without an offline feature, and HERE WeGo brings its
A-game with access to offline maps for more than 110
countries. These maps are not your run-of-the-mill
store-bought variety either, as they include floor-byfloor
details of mainstream indoor venues like shopping
malls and airports.
AVAILABLE for iOS and Android
KEEN TO DO A WEEKEND GETAWAY IN A CITY? WELL, EDITOR
AND MILLENNIAL AISHAH AZALI EXPLORES THE VIBRANT CITY OF
JAKARTA AND ALL ITS COOL AND NOT TO MENTION, INSTAGRAM-
WORTHY PLACES TO VISIT FOR A WEEKEND OF FUN.
WORDS BY AISHAH AZALI • PHOTOS BY AISHAH AZALI & ISMAYA GROUP
As a millennial, I’m always looking
for interesting places to visit, eat
and explore so I can gain new
experiences while curating a colourful
Instagram feed. Initially, Bangkok is always
the city I hear when people talk about
weekend getaways filled with endless
shopping and hip eateries.
But the expansion on television
highlighting the greatness of Jakarta made
me wonder what kind of treasures can I
discover there. As a foodie and lover of
architecture, I was looking more into that
direction. Then, of course, there is my love
for shopping and the overall excitement
of getting to know new people. Jakarta
surprised me in many ways so here are
some tips on how to really enjoy yourself
in the capital of Indonesia.
THE LAND OF
HISTORY AND ART
Little did I know that Jakarta’s museums
are located in a gigantic square of
connecting pre-war buildings that have
been transformed into museums and
cafes, located at North Jakarta. The Old
City, formerly known as Old Batavia, now
known as Fatahillah Square was once the
city hall during the reign of the Dutch.
The old colonial buildings retain
its charm and grandeur from the
outside even though they now
serve as various museums like
the History Museum, the Wayang
Museum and the Fine Arts and
Ceramic Museum. The History
Museum is mostly filled with grand
oil paintings of patrons and Dutch
officers, hanged alongside antique
furniture of that time like meeting
tables and settees.
Lovers of Indonesian art
should definitely stop by the Wayang
Museum that features the tools for
wayang kulit (shadow puppeteering) that
is so synonymous with Indonesian culture.
The square itself were filled with
teenagers lounging by the steps, taking
selfies and busking out songs as tourists
rent out neon coloured bicycles to circle
around in. It feels like a hangout spot for
the young locals as much as it is a tourist
attraction.
Art galleries are a plenty at the trendy
neighborhood of Kemang. The Hadiprana
Gallery and Edwin Gallery are just some
of the art places along Kemang Raya that
feature contemporary paintings from local
and international artists.
Millennials Guide to Jakarta
THE LAND OF
HIP EATERIES
If you thought neighborhoods like Bangsar or
Damansara in KL has cool concept eateries, then you
would be mind blown by the restaurants in Jakarta. The
industrial theme that is popular here extends to the
neighboring country but is done in a more diverse kind
of way, not just carbon copies from place to place.
I had some of the best coffee at DJournal Coffee
located inside the Grand Indonesia mall. The open
coffee bar sees you waiting for your coffee ala Starbucks
style as the barista whips up interesting concoctions like
red velvet latte and the boozy iced carajillo. The decor
cleverly mixes wood and steel, a great place to snap
pictures for your Instagram feed.
While walking back to my hotel, I came across this
gorgeous and busy building packed with a variety of
restaurants from cafes to diners and bars called The
Fairground. It is located in the business district called
SCBD close to the swanky high-end mall, Pacific Place.
I dropped by Berrywell at The Fairgrounds, one of
the healthy food spots there that are known for their
smoothie bowls. Popular among the fitness crowd
thanks to the many patrons clad in colourful sports
attire and toting yoga mats, I was recommended the PB
& B smoothie bowl. Fresh bananas and peanut butter
are blended into an almost oatmeal consistency and
decorated with chia seeds, coconut flakes and muesli.
I cannot write about food without mentioning some
local fare. I stumbled upon a Sunday morning market
along Pintu Gelora 1 Road where they close down the
adjacent main road Jalan Jendral Sudirman for cyclers
and joggers.
Traditional Indonesian street food could be found
everywhere at the market. Locals were noshing on
soupy broths of bakso, fried snacks of tofu and bananas
and even fresh coconuts.
I chose a humble looking cart named Nasi Pecel
Madiun manned by a sweet looking lady. Nasi pecel is
rice, topped with blanched vegetables like bean sprouts
and kangkung and drenched with spicy peanut sauce
and a side of crackers. The taste is so flavourful in an
Indonesian kind of way, spicy yet sweet.
The satay is another popular local dish with the
franchise, Sate Senayan available in many malls. I have
to say, Indonesian satay has its differences compared to
the Malaysian ones. The marinade is different and the
peanut sauce is surprisingly smooth, almost like melted
peanut butter compared to the chunky version I’m used
to having in KL.
THE LAND OF
MALLS & SHOPPING
Jakarta has a lot of malls. High-end ones serving you
Givenchy and Jimmy Choo and middle-class ones with
more local brands, just pick your style. I went to a couple
and for local goods like batik and various designs of baju
kurungs and button ups, Thamrin City Mall is your best
bet. Thamrin City Mall mimics the goods from the popular
tourist spot Tanah Abang Market which sell fabrics and
traditional Indonesian wear. Difference is, you are in
a mall setting with bigger shops and air-conditioning
throughout.
Fancy malls are like Pacific Place which boast
the department store Galeries Lafayette (originally
from France) that have high-end local brands as well
as imported brands from Italy and New York. Plaza
Indonesia is another maze of shops in the heart of the
city that sport some lavish in-mall eateries from Englishinspired
tea houses to trendy industrial restaurants.
An interesting hipster store that I found is located
across the street from Plaza Indonesia at the Grand
Indonesia mall. Art & Science is a lifestyle store with
racks of debonair men clothes to unique board games and
fine leather minimalist handbags that look like something
an Instagram influencer would wear.
A similar store that I went to was back at Kemang
Raya called Aksara. It is predominantly a bookstore selling
specialty books from genres like fashion, food and fiction.
Special edition books from Neil Gaiman and JK Rowling
can be found next to more millennial subject books like
New York City’s Sneaker Culture by Bobbito Garcia.
When you are there, check out the hidden cafe behind
the shop called Ruang Seduh.
Still in Kemang, I also popped by one of the
hottest concept stores in Jakarta called FJ’L Boutique.
Mannequins are dressed in brands like Hudson Jeans,
Paul & Joe, Linda Farrow and Altru Apparel alongside
home items like scented candles and soaps.
TIPS ON
A common word you’ll hear is
‘Machet’, meaning traffic jam
which Jakarta is notorious for.
So do time your journeys well
because a 3km journey can
take more than 30mins during rush hour.
Motorcycles as a mode of transportation is popular in
Jakarta with companies like UberMoto, Grab and Gojek
pioneering the trade. Ask your rider for a face mask and
cap before putting on your helmet.
Walking around Jakarta is pretty hard (but not
impossible) because their pedestrian roads are not in
good condition in certain neighborhoods. But if you are
walking, look out for potholes and uneven pavements.
Jakarta is a big city so make sure to pin point which part
of the city (north, east, south or west) has most of your
wishlist spots and book a hotel there. I stayed in Central
Jakarta that borders the southern parts because it was
close to the cool places that I wanted to visit at the
business district.
THE LAND OF
PARTIES
The nightlife of Jakarta is happening if you know where
to go. I already mentioned that the Indonesians know the
importance of decor to create ambiance in a space and
their bars are no different.
The famous club Potato Head in Bali has a smaller
branched in Pacific Place mall. The interior features tall
ceilings with plush seating against a backdrop of flowers
and veining plants. Don’t get me started on the exquisite
light fixtures.
A clean black and white interior with marbled walls
and more glorious light fixtures is Gia Restaurant and Bar.
Distinctly Italian in design and menu, this is the place to
be for dinner or pre-party drinks. The signature drinks are
named after European femme fatales like Monica Belluci
and Sofia Loren and if you are feeling a little ‘boujie’, try
asking for the rare whisky menu.
Nightlife would not be complete without a sky bar
and SKYE on the 56th floor of the Grand Indonesia has
the best views of central Jakarta. It is a fiesta in the sky
thanks to the Hispanic menu and colourful decor. The
outdoor area has seating next to an infinity pool, a great
place to Snapchat away.
Shimla was once the summer capital of
India during the British rule as the weather
is cooler on the hills. It even inspired a
British television series called ‘Indian
Shimla in 1932.

other beef and chicken burgers.
Craving for “Fried Chicken”, then Popeyes is your best stop. This popular food
chain has been bringing Southern comfort food since the 70s. Besides their “Fried
Chicken”, the “Hot Buttery Biscuit” glazed with honey is a side dish bestseller.
Your Best Travelling Shoe:
Merrack & Co.
Frequent globetrotters, especially fashion-inclined
ones will definitely face the dilemma on how
to pack their shoes in the suitcase. Footwear
can take up a lot of space and fashionistas will
understand that bringing only one pair is not
enough to match with all your outfits. Cue local
footwear brand, Merrack and Co. A company
that understands the plight of a fashion lover by
designing casual travel-friendly shoes that are
easy on the eyes.
The signature trait is the rope soles,
synonymous with the espadrille footwear of the
Spaniards. The rope soles are designed around
cute little flats and sandal that are accented with
metallic fabrics and sequin flowers. These soles
are made from the natural fibre called ‘jute’ that is
biodegradable, durable and breathable; amazing
traits to have on your shoes. A bonus is that
its shape and size make it easy to store in your
luggage bag.
Flats are segregated to the Okinawa, a solid
one colour flat or the Cap Front Espadrille with
thicker jute soles and come in tantalizing dual
tones. Sandal lovers will go gaga over the Capri,
made with lamb skin leather in matte and metallic
shades, an ideal slip-on for those walks along the
boardwalk facing the sea. The Capri also comes in
a tasseled version if you want something extra on
Fiqs
High heel wearers understand that wearing your stilettos in the office to match
your power suit is empowering but walking back to the LRT after work in it is
something one should avoid. The flats by FIQS were incepted from that plight
because it is not cute to wear your rubber slippers with that pencil skirt. FIQ’s
flats are not only comfortable but portable as well as they fold into each other
and come in a satin pouch. The satin pouch is even expandable to perfectly fit
your stilettos because who wants to stuff your heels in your tote bag?
The designers of FIQS meticulously thought out their product, down to
the material. They wanted to make sure that the transition from the high heels
to FIQS flats was nothing but a relief of comfort when you slide your aching
feet in. That is thanks to the high-quality cow leather that molds to your feet
shape after several wears. Then there is that extra polyurethane foam cushion
for shock absorption and all round comfort.
“MURAL, MURAL ON THE WALL,
WHICH IS THE BEST MURAL OF
THEM ALL?” IS IT THE CHILDREN
ON THE BICYCLE? THE INDIAN
LADY PRAYING NEAR THE TREE?
THE OLD MAN ON A BOAT?
TOUGH CHOICE.
WORDS & PHOTOS BY FRANCIS YIP
ell, wall murals are not
something new. I grew up
seeing murals painted on the school
walls but I didn’t find it special until
2012. It was the year when the
famed mural “Little Children on a
Bicycle” created by Ernest
Zacharevic, a Lithuanian artist put
George Town on the world map as
the city of murals.
Ernest was commissioned by
the Penang Government to lead a
street art project entitled, “Mirror
George Town” as part of the George
Town Heritage Festival. I remember
that year, I became a mural hunter,
walking down memory lane of the
city I once lived in.
I discovered more than just
murals featuring figure drawings,
cats and others. I found myself
again. Yes, the murals made me
reflect and learn to appreciate those
little things in life and the diversity
of the community, the living
heritage of George Town I used to
be accustomed with.
Thanks to the murals, the state
tourism industry is booming as more
tourists flocked into the city to
catch the murals like The Little Girl
in Blue, Boy On A Bike, Children
In A Boat, The Awaiting Trishaw
Peddlar, The Cat Mural and others.
Local artists and new
international artists were engaged
for more creative murals. These
include the Old Man on A Boat
and Indian Lady Praying by Julia
Volchkova, a Russian artist.
And it didn’t take long for other
towns and cities to emulate George
Town. In Ipoh, the former mining
town has a new lease of life with
wall murals like Chinese Style
Mining Town, Yellow Hummingbird,
Kopi Break, Uncle Drinking Coffee
and more.
In Kuala Lumpur, the mural
enclave is around Chinatown. I
took a quaint stroll along the back
alleys there few weeks ago and
discovered some unique murals by
Ernest Zacherevic. One was “Rage
Against the Machine” featuring
a bunch of school children
venting anger at the bus. It was
truly magnificent with its unique
combination of cut out bus panels
with semi-sculptural mural.
The east coast of Malaysia has
also jumped on the bandwagon
by displaying charming murals
showcasing the culture and
lifestyle of the Palestinians along
the backlane of the PAS Building in
Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
The mural fever continues to
head south in Muar Johor, as Julia
Volchkova created the nation’s
biggest mural as certified by the
Malayia Book Of Records (MBOR).
With measurement of 11.80
metres in height and 9.75 metres
in width, the mural features the
portrait of two sisters aged 7 and 3.
Apart from street murals, I also
notice a new trend has emerged.
Boutique hotels, cafes and
shopping malls are tapping on
the popularity of murals to draw
customers. Two months ago, I
stayed in Hotel de Art in i-City and
found myself surrounded by fairy
tales and fantasy murals like The
Hobbit, Super Mario and others.
The hotel called itself homecoming
in art.
Whatever it is, murals
continue to become one of the
key attractions to boost more
tourists nationwide. Spreading
the love of art, this trend is truly a
“mural’velous” surprise happening
around Malaysia.
