Firing Frank
Zappa just part of
Ferguson’s story
he guy had to go. The boss was adamant
about that. If Al Ferguson
wanted to keep his gig at the Red TFlame, a rough beer bar in Pomona, he had
to get rid of the guy who had been sitting
in with him the past couple weeks.
The guy was a good musician and
knew what he was doing, plugging in
high-tech amps for gigs. “He used to come
in all the time and talk music, sitting next
to the stage,” Ferguson recalled. When the
band’s lead singer was drafted for the Vietnam
War, Al asked him to sit in.
But the guy would substitute his own
weird, profane-laced lyrics for the words
in songs, especially late in the night, and
this was the 1960’s, when such stuff
wasn’t tolerated by the cops, who
theatened to close the bar down.
So Ferguson ended up firing Frank
Zappa, a fact the rock legend and his band
were only too happy to bring up years later.
“I was playing at the Pussycat a’ Go-Go
in Las Vegas when I hear a guy yell: `Hey
Ferguson, didn’t you fire Frank?’ They
were laughing like crazy at a table,” he
said. “Good move Ferguson!”
Fortunately Ferguson became known
for more than just firing Zappa. Now he’s
the owner of Haus and Home, but in his
rock-and-roll days the Big Bear resident
was guitarist for The Hondells, a 1960’s
surf rock band a la the Beach Boys. In fact,
The Hondells were best known for their
cover of a Beach Boys song, “Little
Honda,” which peaked at #9 on the charts
in 1964, plus “Younger Girl” and others..
The Hondells opened for headliners
like Jan and Dean, BB King, the Righteous
Brothers and the Beach Boys among others,
pretty heady stuff for an aspiring musician
like Al. The first big concert he ever
went to was the Rolling Stones first USA
tour in 1964 and he was in the opening
band! That was when he was with Don and
the Deacons, house band at Cinnamon Cinder
in North Hollywood, run by Bob
Eubanks of game show fame.
When that gig ended the Hondells
came calling, at least vice-versa. “I knew
Dick Burns, leader of the Hondells, and
had heard he started the band, so I gave
him a call,” Ferguson said. “Dick said he
needed a guitarist. Then we went in the studio.
That’s when I met Glen Campbell.”
The music legend was singing mostly
high notes for the Hondells album and
would accompany the group to New York
in 1964 to record a Pepsi commercial.
“Glen had to go to Phoenix for another recording
session so we only had like three
days to get it right,” Ferguson said. “Back
then there was no digital and we did track
after track to get it right. We literally
pushed Glen into a taxi on the third day.
“A couple months later he released
`By the Time I Get to Phoenix,’ ” he said.
“It didn’t have anything to do with our session
but the coincidence made quite a
memory. Glen is the most humble, talented,
greatest guitar player I ever met.”
For about three years the Hondells
were on top of the world. The band toured
the California coast with the Beach Boys
and County Fairs in the Midwest with the
Righteous Brothers. None of the shows
meant as much to Ferguson though as a
USO Tour of Vietnam in 1966.
“These weren’t the big Bob Hopestyle
shows,” Ferguson said. “We would
fly by helicopter to the front lines deep in
the jungle, play for maybe 30 GIs in a rain
soaked jungle. Our equipment would short
out before we would get through one song.
We would also visit the hospital at each
camp and I enjoyed those visits almost as
much as playing the shows.”
The tour started for Ferguson, who
was declared 4F due to bleeding ulcers—
“I almost died when I was 17, the result of
playing teenage clubs and drinking soda
pop”—with the chance meeting of a lifetime.
He was checking into his Saigon
hotel when he bumped into someone and
turned around to apologize, only to recognize
his best friend Craig Schoenbaum!
“We had come halfway around the
world to run into each other,” Al said. “He
had been drafted. So we spent the day running
around together. I heard after I got
back to the States that he had been killed.”
And when the traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial
came to Big Bear a few years ago,
Al traced his friend’s name.
Next Ferguson found himself in Las
Vegas for a two-year run with The Sands
Playmate Revue, a rock extravaganza with
lots of pretty girls. And stories! From rubbing
elbows with Elvis to playing cards at
the same table with Sammy Davis Jr. Playing
with the likes of Lee Greenwood who
brought the casino to a halt by singing a
Japanese folk song to the sons of Arab
sheikhs, Al was living the good life.
But he also a divorced father with custody
of his kids, so he hung up his Fender
Telecaster and eventually wound up in Big
Bear. He still breaks it out, for a recent
show at The Cave or sitting in with Art
Harriman at the Barnstorm, so catch him!
Have a good one.
Delamar Mountain is the other Aug.
6 hike, also at 8 a.m. Most of the hike is on
the fairly level and scenic Pacific Crest
Trail through pines, oaks, firs and junipers
peak in the Valley at nearly 10,000 feet,
on Aug. 27. It’s a strenuous, 10 mile outand-back
with 2,500 ft. elevation gain. The
first two miles are a steady climb through
lush forest and meadow, before the trail juts
up the rocky ridge dominated by higher elevation
trees like cedar and juniper, topping
out at 9,952 feet. (760) 333-3103.
Feed need for speed at Speedway
A
t age 15 AJ Wayne isn’t old
enough to drive but he’s already
got a license. To race, in fact, at
Big Bear Speedway, where he had the
track’s second fastest time of the day one
recent Saturday, even as he counts down
the days till he gets his learner’s permit.
Better yet, his clocking of 25.77 was
14th fastest of the month at Big Bear
Speedway, faster even than his dad Matt’s
time of 26.02. Truly a quarter-second
makes all the difference in the world when
you’re racing against the clock!
Then again, the Valencia residents had
an advantage: both are avid kart racers already,
frequenting indoors tracks for the
past five years. Their experience was evident
as each whipped through hairpin turns
and shot down the back straightaway. As
fast as the Waynes were driving, they were
still a full second off the track’s fastest recorded
time, 24.80. More typical race times
are in the 30-40 second range or even more,
with only the fastest breaking the 30 second
mark.
“The key is to slow down into the corners
and then accelerate out of them,” Matt
said. “At times my wheels were drifting
around the corner instead of making good
contact,” AJ added. “That’s the fun part but
it’s not ideal for the fastest times.”
Feed the need for speed at Big Bear
Speedway, as racers negotiate high-tech
Sodi Karts around a one-fifth mile Grand
Prix-style track. Tires squealing in the
turns, engines roaring, push the karts to the
limit in a real Go-Pro experience while
Big Bear Today
hitting speeds up to 30 mph. Tecpro barriers
used in Formula 1 and circuits around
the world line the track to make the experience
even more authentic.
These aren’t your parent’s go-karts
from yesteryear; Sodi’s RT8 is a fully featured
vehicle with self-adjusting hydraulic
brakes and vacuum fuel pumps that
come straight from the automotive industry.
The karts handle like race cars and the
Honda Whisper Motors generate amazing
power, enough for cars to lay rubber
through turns though virtually impossible
to roll.
Nereyda Bernal of Los Angeles on the
other hand wasn’t trying to set any records.
She was riding in one of Big Bear
Speedway’s double karts with dual steering
wheels with nine-year-old son Julio and
she let him handle most of the navigation.
“Driving double allowed him to get
experience,” she said. “So I mostly just
pressed the gas pedal. He kept saying faster
and I was already freaking out! This was
my first time racing a kart.”
The racing experience at Big Bear’s
fastest attraction begins in the base lodge
where first time guests view a two-and-ahalf
minute safety video. Then they’re issued
Big Bear Speedway licenses—complete
with picture—good for one year and
assigned a heat number.
After donning head socks and helmets
adorned with visors and last minute instructions,
the pit crew waves drivers onto the
track in staggered starts, no more than 11
cars per heat. First lap is not timed so racers
can get a feel for the
car and track. Timing
starts with the second lap
and drivers get about
seven to nine laps or
more depending on how
fast they go. At the end
of the heat drivers are
waved in to the pit area
where they get a printout
of their time and the six
fastest times in the heat.
The leader in
karting, Sodi Karts balance
speed and safety
with four point seat belts and Extra Enhanced
remote controls so the pit crew can
shut down or throttle back any or all karts
at any time for safety. Sodi RT8 sports design
elegance and fully adjustable pedals
to serve up the ultimate race experience.
Big Bear Speedway has 17 single karts and
six doubles which have two steering
wheels and two brake pedals for training
or parent riding with a child. Times are
posted for all to see plus there’s family
priced snack bar and video games.
Initial Big Bear Speedway membership
is $20 (double kart $25) which includes
license valid for one year, one race
and mandatory head sock worn under the
helmet. Subsequent visits cost $15 per race
or buy credits in advance which are stored
on your license for a year and save up to
30%. Active law enforcement, fire and
military personnel buy one Speedway pass
and get another free every Wednesday all
summer . Just show proper ID any Wednesday
and get two-for-one passes, a $20
value.
Big Bear Speedway is in the parking
lot at Snow Play (42825 Big Bear Blvd.)
The tour has served as the perfect introduction
a.m.-6 p.m. on August 5-6, 12-13, 19-20
and now 26-27. Each weekend has a theme
too starting with the opening Fairy Frolic,
followed by Pirate Takeover, Royal Purple
weekend and finally Steampunk which
takes visitors back to the days when
everything was powered by steam.
Fairy Garden Forest is a land of
enchantment
There’s knights jousting on horseback
in live competition, archery tournament,
live steel battle, plus mounted contests of
skill and horsemanship. Queen Elizabeth’s
Royal Court and Midsummer Fairy Forest
Children’s area are other highlights. The
days of William Shakespeare and the
Renaissance are presented with nonstop
entertainment by strolling entertainers,
stage performances with belly dancers,
jugglers, musicians and singers, beautiful
crafts and plenty of period food and drink.
Thrill to live jousting courtesy of the
Imperial Knights. This is no dinner show
but rather live contact action without
predetermined winner.
Wearing 130 lbs. of armor is
just the beginning; each
competitor peers through a
quarter-inch slit in their
helmet, staring down a foe
atop a 2,000 lb. horse just as
they are.
Each contestant enters
the arena to plenty of
pageantry with a bow to the
Queen and chivalry for the
ladies. When they charge
head-on the ground shudders
and their solid hemlock
lances often break and yes,
occasionally so do bones. It’s
full contact action at its best.
The Lynx Show is a
unique blend of magic,
sword swallowing and
comedy by a veteran who has
Big Bear Today
Steel battles, jousting and horsemanship in the arena at Renaissance Faire
performed at Renaissance festivals across
the country. Also entertaining is Joust
Kidding, a high energy singing group with
a stage full of pirates. Speaking of, there’s
plenty of swashbucking fun with Under
the Black Flag, with duels and the
opportunity to learn how to take down a
pirate, or become one. Pedersen Sawmill
is at 39115 Rim of the World Dr. in
Fawnskin.
Of course there’s plenty of good grub
and grog, with suds freely flowing and
turkey legs to gnaw, pig on a stick,
bratwurst and more traditional tastes like
sandwiches, gyros and tacos. For a
medieval shopping experience visit the
marketplace with dozens of merchants
presenting wares from ere and yon,
ranging from Renaissance clothing to
pewter steins, tarts, scents, oils, ceramics
and much more.
Daily Faire admission is $18 for
adults, or $32 buys a weekend pass good
for both days. Season passes valid all four
weekends are $110. Senior/student/
military admission is $12 daily, $20
weekends and $55 season pass, 5 and
under free. www.bbvrsinc.org.
Go ape on Tarzan boat floating park
There’s rope to swing from, platforms
to jump from, trampolines to bounce on
and water slide. All floating on Big Bear
Lake! Say hello to the new Tarzan Boat at
Captain John’s Marina. Part pontoon boat,
part playground, part water park, the
award-winning design is taking lake play
to a new level with multiple ways to play
on the water.
Tarzan Boat is like nothing you’ve
ever seen, largely because Captain John’s
has the only one on the West Coast. The
Over 500 street rods, antique autos,
and classic cars will climb the mountain
highways to the 28th annual Big Bear Fun
Run on August 11-13.
The event, presented by Big Bear
Lake Antique Car Club, displays timeless
rarities, dragsters, and custom coupes from
the Southland and also Nevada and
Arizona, which creates a paradise for
motorists in an alpine setting. The car
show takes place in the Village, where the
cars line up in designated parking spaces
so the public can view these timeless
classics, and car show admission is free.
With streets closed off on the
boulevard at Pine Knot and Village Dr. and
at Northwoods Resort, families are free to
stroll at their leisure to view the hundreds
of street rods, antiques, stockers, pickups
and panel trucks. The show
features a wide variety of autos
such as Cobras, Ford and Chevy
Woodies, Thunderbirds, Model
A Roadsters, El Caminos,
Corvairs, Barracudas, and
Corvettes.
Saturday’s the big day with
the Show and Shine throughout
the Village from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
and vendors displaying crystal
window etchings and small
miniature motors that actually
run, among others. In the
floating playgrounds have been wildly
popular back east in Florida and Tennessee
along with water venues in the Bahamas
and Australia, but this is the first one to set
sail west of the Mississippi.
Jump, leap, swing or slide into the
water to beat the heat on Tarzan boat—two
drop-down ladders make it easy to get back
aboard. It’s a jungle-theme aquatic park
complete with trained lifeguards, and those
who have had the chance to play on Tarzan
boat, which opened for the season
Classic rides on display at Fun Run
Bartlett Parking Lot there’s food, Village
Business Association engine raffle and 50-
50 drawing. One of the highlights is the
traditional “Cruise Around the Lake,”
which takes place at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
There are 250-300 cars that rally around
the lake in a classic car parade.
The car show concludes with
Sunday’s awards show in the Bartlett lot
at 9 a.m. There are some 70 awards given
at the show. Some of the awards presented
are best flames, best paint, best fins,
mayor’s choice, the top 25, and the
BBLACC President’s award. Noel Blanc,
who carries on the voices of Bugs Bunny,
Porky Pig and all the other great Looney
Tunes characters in the tradition of his late
father Mel, makes presentations as well.
Captain John’s Tarzan boat is really a floating water park with 6 ways to play!
Memorial Day weekend, say it’s one of the
best times they’ve had on the water.
Go ape on an array of attractions,
starting with low and high platforms for
jumping into the water. You’ll probably
start the Tarzan experience on the low
platform with the Monkey Jump, a six foot
high platform accessed by the first
staircase. Then graduate to the Gorilla
Jump with 14 foot high dive.
For a really different experience
check out Monkey and Gorilla Bounces.
Guests jump onto springy trampolines with
padded sides and are sent skyward before
they splash into the water. The Gorilla
Bounce sports a 12 foot drop that really
sends people flying, as high as 20 feet
above the water! As does the Tarzan Rope
Swing—unleash your inner Captain Jack
Sparrow by swinging out over the lake.
Tarzan Boat even has its own water
FREE WIFI
CLOSE TO
VILLAGE,
LAKE &
DINING
slide! The twisting, turning flume has a
pump that sends lake water through the
jungle theme tube to make for fast slides
before riders are deposited into the water.
Tarzan boat offers the lake’s most
unique experience. It’s anchored inside
Grout Bay about 100 yards for 10-12 feet
of calmer water and guests are shuttled out
by electric jungle-safari cruiser. While the
34-foot boat accommodates up to 40,
Captain John’s limits capacity to 30 so
there’s no waiting for attractions and
everyone has a good time.
General admission is $25 for one hour,
$40 for two hours, $50 for three, and $60
for four with multiple daily sessions. Under
12 must be accompanied by parent. Tarzan
Boat is open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
`Broads’ star in CATS Steel Magnolias
The last show ever for Community
Arts Theater Society (CATS) is fittingly
one it has never done before, presented by
an amazing cast.
Steel Magnolias is a fitting finale for
CATS, which is calling it quits after 24
years and over 70 major productions. Catch
one of six shows at the Warehouse Theater
in Big Bear City at 7:30 p.m. on August
with surviving members of Sublime and
despite a ten-year breakup the stars are still
bringing their fans a mix of reggae, punk
and ska. Several original members remain
with the band. Tickets $20-$30.
SUPER DIAMOND is a tribute to the
incomparable Neil Diamond on Aug. 26.
This is no ordinary tribute; Randy “Surreal
Neil” Cordero fronts the band and
sounds so much like Diaomd on classics
like “Sweet Caroline,” “Cherry Cherry,”
“Song Sung Blue,” and “I Am, I Said.”
The band has performed the
superstar’s music backed by the San Diego,
Charlotte, Phoenix and Utah symphony
orchestras among others. Enough
to draw a nod from Diamond himself and
get Super Diamond recognition as one of
Bands” in 2014. Tickets $25-$35.
`Steel Magnolias’ cast: (L-R) Nancy Walker, Elena Peavy, Serena Saunders,
Carolyn Freeman Champ, Diana Hintergardt, Amber Parle
2:30 p.m. Sunday matinees Aug. 27 and
Sept. 3.
Most people are familiar with the 1989
award-winning film starring Sally Field,
Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Shirley
MacLaine, Daryl Hannah and Olympia
Dukakis. Steel Magnolias actually began
as a play in 1987 and CATS brings the story
of a deep bond shared by a group of women
in a small-town southern community with
its own all-star cast: the “Broadway Broads
of Big Bear!”
The same ladies that brought a bevy
of Broadway hits to life in the CATS original
a few years ago reunite for Steel Magnolias.
Carolyn Freeman Champ was just
seen as Lucy in last month’s You’re a Good
Man, Charlie Brown and for this show she
plays Truvy. Years of theater experience
add to her role. She was also in Annie Get
Your Gun and her background includes national
tour productions and voiceover.
Serena Saunders as Annelle literally
grew up on the CATS stage so it’s only
fitting she should help bring down the final
curtain. She’s had many starring roles
for the company, last month playing
Charlie Brown’s sister Sally and two years
ago starring in Annie Get Your Gun. Other
credits include The King and I.
Amber Parle’s life journey has taken
her around the world and she too has
starred for CATS when she’s in town. Her
role as Shelby delivers some of the most
poignant moments in Steel Magnolias, a
show of both funny situations, life-changing
challenges and solutions. Diana
Hintergardt, another CATS veteran with
roles ranging from starring as Anna in The
King and I to good witch Glenda in The
Wizard of Oz, plays her mother M’Lynn.
Two more longtime CATS stars round
out the cast. Elena Peavy as Clairee twice
thrilled audiences at the wicked witch in
Wizard of Oz and she has lent her magnificent
voice to many shows including being
one of the original “Divas of Big Bear.”
Nancy Walker meanwhile is a renowned
singer from the South Bay who
has performed at The White House for both
the Clinton and Obama administrations. In
2005 she was asked to sing two songs for
the United Nations Ambassador’s Ball during
the 60th anniversary in New York City.
Walker has twice performed tributes at the
Redlands Bowl, to the legendary female
singers of Nashville and songs of World
War II in front of thousands.
Directing the talented cast is Adam
McDonald, who last month was Charlie
Brown. CATS founder Karen “Sarge”
Rachels produces the company’s last effort
with Karen Bergmann again Associate
Producer. All tickets for Steel Magnolias
are $20 and seating in the theater is
limited so purchase early.
Warehouse Theater is at 1117 W. Big
Bear Blvd. (909) 585-4757.

at Discovery Center
Record-setting January snowfall
raised Big Bear Lake over five feet from
its 2016 low, allowing Discovery Centerled
canoe and kayak tours to return.
The quiet explorations of Grout Bay
are back after missing last summer due to
the drought. With the lake up guests will
again be paddling their way in search of
great blue herons, baby ducks and beaver.
The two hour tours led by naturalists
begin with a quick paddling lesson and
then groups head to the water to experience
dipping a blade. Along the way paddlers
learn the history of the lake, gold mining,
and various animals found here.
Kayak Eco-Tours are Saturdays 9-11
a.m. and 4-6 p.m. plus Sundays from 9-11
a.m. Cost is $35 per person for ages 10
and up and includes water and snack. Canoe
Sky-high parasail rides at Pine Knot
Big Bear has the highest sky-high
rides in the world. At this 6,750 ft. elevation,
you’d have to jump out of an airplane
to open a parachute higher in the sky.
When the 600 ft. tether that pulls fliers
around by boat to and fro across the
lake is fully extended, parasailers soar way
higher than 7,000 feet above sea level.
Nowhere else, not even in Lake Tahoe
which is 500 feet lower in elevation than
Big Bear, do parasailers fly so high.
Guests don’t have to get wet if they
don’t want to at Pine Knot Marina Parasail.
Many wear street clothes for their adventure
of a lifetime as they soar 300 feet
above the lake, dancing in the breezes.
Others dance just above the surface with
maybe only their toes getting tickled. Most
parasailers are content to soar above the
water and the only soak in views, of Snow
Summit, Mt. San Gorgonio, and desert.
Children as young as seven can fly.
FREE
Bowling &
Laser Tag!
All parasailers are required to wear life
jackets. Tandem flights are subject to
weight limits which depend on the wind.
Flights are $80 per person or $160 tandem,
observers ride for $20. (909) 478-4377.
Popular family activities at Discovery
Center, which opened May 1998, include
Gold Panning for youngsters Saturdays
from 10 a.m.-noon through Sept. 2. The
“gold” that fills their pans is really just
pyrite, but kids love to swirl sand and water
just like miners did 150 years ago in
Holcomb Valley during Southern
California’s largest gold rush. Kids take
their findings home with them and even a
certificate, included in the $3 fee.
Build a Birdhouse during two-hour
programs sponsored by Butcher’s Block.
Bluebirds love the well-designed homes
families build together on August 12, 26
and Sept. 2. Cost is just six bucks per kit.
Saturdays at 1 and 2 p.m. and Sundays
at 11 a.m. and noon, there’s free Nature
Walks around Discovery Center’s forested
grounds with a naturalist, 30-minute
adventures perfect for the entire family.
Discovery Center naturalists also lead
Night Hikes Thursdays at 7 p.m. along
Cougar Crest Trail. Learn how the forest
changes as the sun goes down during free
hour-long non-strenuous outings. Meet at
Serrano campground on the north shore.
Popular Evening Programs are held
most Fridays and Saturdays through August
31 at 8 p.m. There’s campfires,
singalongs, informational ranger talks and
more, sponsored by California Land Management.
Suggested donation is $5.
Discover the worldwide scavenger
hunt known as Geocaching during 90-
minute introductions to the fun activity.
Learn how to go online to find caches, use
a GPS to track them, and become educated
on the environmental ethics of the sport.
Programs are free and held from 9-10:30
a.m. Aug. 12 and 26.
Fun on the ground and in the sky for
guests of all ages when Big Bear Air Fair,
a tradition for over 30 years, returns for its
every-other-year date at the airport on Saturday,
August 26 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
`Buckaroo Ball’
Fine food, country music and a magnificent
setting are in store during the first
Buckaroo Ball on August 13 at The Inn at
Fawnskin. There will be a delicious buffet
dinner, wine bar and special chocolates delivered
to each table. Plus silent and live
auctions as well as opportunity drawing for
gorgeous baskets.
Top country band The Runnin’ Kind
plays dance music all night long and Nancy
Walker is sure to sing a few Patsy Cline
songs. Walker has performed twice at The
White House for both the Clinton and
Obama administrations. In 2005 she was
asked to sing two songs for the United
Nations Ambassador’s Ball during the 60th
anniversary in New York City.
Walker has twice performed shows at
the Redlands Bowl, to the legendary female
singers of Nashville and songs of
World War II in front of thousands. In Big
Bear Walker has performed nine tribute
shows to Joni Mitchell, Nat King Cole,
Clooney and Patsy Cline during events like
“Concert on the Green” and fundraisers.
The evening is a fundraiser for Bear
Valley Center for Spiritual Enrichment.
Tickets are $65, purchased by calling The
Inn at Fawnskin at (909) 866-3200.
Vintage warbirds from the Planes of
Fame air museum in Chino along with
other antique aircraft will fill the skies,
while on the ground there’s antique cars, a
wide range of vendor booths, activities for
kids, skydivers, Forest Service helicopter
water drops, and much more. Airplane lovers
typically see an array of vintage craft
that fly in for the event, like a B-25
Mitchell, best known as the plane Jimmy
Doolittle and his squadron used in his famous
moreale-boosting raid on Tokyo.
There will also be a P-51D Mustang
long range fighter, carrier-capable F4U
Corsair, 420 mph P38 Lightning, 1000-
horsepower P-40 Warhawk and a Douglas
Dauntless Navy dive bomber. Hellcat,
Bearcat, Spitfire, they’ll all be there including
a Japanese Zero and Yak-3. WWII-era
Soviet fighter.
Other aircraft flying in for the show
may include a Douglas C-47, a military
transport during the war adapted from the
commercial favorite DC-3. Take to the
skies yourself with helicopter and biplane
rides aboard vintage aircraft, or just check
out the full motion simulator.
For youngsters there’s climbing wall,
jump house and balloons. Don’t miss the
dozens of sponsor booths that include the
General George Patton Museum, Orange
County Pilot’s Association and United
States Marines, Army and Air Force, plus
local groups like Big Bear Discovery Center,
Historical Museum and others.
Just in Time skydivers will drop in for
See vintage aircraft
like a P-39 (above)
and Spitfire (right)
the festivities during 9
a.m. and noon demonstrations.
Plus
there’s classic cars on
display including
beauties from the previous
weekend’s Fun
Run. Air Fair is preceded
by the Kiwanis
pancake breakfast at 8
a.m.
Admission is free and there’s plenty
of parking at the Big Bear Snow Play
(Speedway) satellite lot (42825 Big Bear
Bernardino National Forest. From easy
strolls along the lake to stenuous climbs
into the mountains, there are trails for all
abilities, including families, within a short
drive of Big Bear. For information on all
trails in the Valley and the required
Adventure Pass, visit the Discovery Center
on North Shore Dr., about two miles west
of Stanfield Cutoff. (909) 866-3437.
Castle Rock Trail is a short but strenuous
hike, that ends with a panoramic view of
Big Bear Lake. Legend has it that a beautiful
Indian maiden, jilted by her lover, took her
life by leaping from this towering 100 ft.
monolith. It’s reached after a mostly uphill,
.8 mile walk past a stream and featuring
beautiful views. Located on Hwy. 18
between Boulder Bay and the dam; park on
the lake side of the road.
Cougar Crest Trail is moderate two-mile
(each way) hike. As it winds above the
lake’s north shore, it offers up great views
of water and the surrounding mountains.
Trailhead is on North Shore Dr. about two
miles west of Stanfield Cutoff, .6 mile
from the Discovery Center where you can
park without an Adventure Pass.
Woodland Interpretive Trail is a short,
scenic family stroll with minimal elevation
gain, located on the north shore near Cougar
Crest. Free trail maps (available at the
trailhead or Discovery Center) identify
markers along the route noting local
vegetation, wildlife areas, etc.
Pine Knot Trail from Aspen Glen picnic
area climbs the southern ridge above Alpine
Slide three miles (each way) to Skyline Dr.
2N10, through lush meadow and stands of
white fir and Jeffrey Pine. Continue another
1/4 mile to Grand View Point for spectacular
180-degree vistas.
Holcomb Valley
At one time, Big Bear Valley was thriving
gold country. The last remaining signs of
this historic chapter in Big Bear history are
featured in a driving tour through what is
known as Holcomb Valley. Totaling 11.6
miles over a dirt road, the tour offers stops
at Two Gun Bill’s Saloon, Hangman’s
Tree, Pigmy Cabin, Metzger Mine, and
more. Free maps available at the Big Bear
Discovery Center on the North Shore—
Eight’s enough for SUP at Pleasure Pt.
Standup Paddleboards have now become
a group activity thanks to
new eight-person boards available
for rent at Pleasure Point Marina.
Why go out solo when you can bring
the whole gang along aboard Airhead’s
Super SUP—even the dogs? Everyone gets
to experience the fun of dipping a blade
into the cool lake water as up to eight riders
simultaneously stroke to provide propulsion
around peaceful Metcalf Bay,
where calm tranquil water is ideal for
paddleboard fun.
“The trick is to get everyone paddling
at the same time,” noted Pleasure Point’s
Larry Whittington. “Some find it hard, for
some it’s really easy. It’s a real team building
experience for sure and no one gets left
behind.”
With eight inches of nose/tail rocker—
just like modern powder skis and
snowboards have—the inflatable Super
SUP glides through the water. It’s super
stable with sturdy, rigid platform and recommended
for all ability levels, especially
beginners who appreciate the extra wide
platform with plenty of room to stand and
stroke. Paddle or just float and enjoy the
lake and mountain views!
At 18-1/2 feet long and five feet wide
the board looks like it could accommodate
Paul Bunyan, making for a stable SUP platform.
EVA traction pad and heavy-duty reinforced
drop stitch construction with x-
cross technology are other nice features.
Pleasure Point is the only marina on
the lake offering SUP for up to eight after
acquiring the gargantuan board at a Las
Vegas marine show. Of course guests can
go out solo on it but really this is a ride
meant for families or groups and it’s a lot
to handle without help.
“The bay is the best area for a board
this big because it’s clean, smooth and
safe,” added Pleasure Point’s Carole Shaw.
Super SUP rents for $50 for the first hour,
$35 each additional hour, pretty affordable
fun when shared by a group!
Pleasure Point is the oldest continuously
operated marina on Big Bear Lake,
first opening in 1914 as Belt’s Landing. It
was once owned by none other than cowboy
legend Roy Rogers! Today it’s a fullservice
membership-owned marina that
offers a range of water activities including
kayaks and canoes, fishing and pontoon
boats, jet skis, bait center and more. Plenty
of paved parking too!
People-powered propulsion is a priority
at Pleasure Point, a great place to rent
pedal boats to cruise around the bay.
There’s electric versions too complete with
water cannons allowing friends and families
to squirt each other in fun water battles.
Pleasure Point Marina is at 603
Landlock Landing just off Cienega. Call
