WELCOME
Welcome to the fields! It’s that time of year
again, so leave your worries at the gate,
breathe a lungful of Cumbrian air and get
ready to make some fresh memories in the fields.
A year on from the picture-perfect moment of Kendal
Calling being soaked in a Champagne Supernova singalong
we are ready for an abundant and energetic line-up of
musical decadence!
Bring out your wild side for the ‘Into the Wild’ fancy dress
parade on Saturday as we bring out the animal magnetism
of the Kendal Calling gang to life.
This year not only do we have the amazing vibes that
you the crowd have brought to the event over the years
we also have the ultimate soundtrack with Brian Wilson
bringing Good Vibrations to the deer park as he plays Pet
Sounds in its entirety!
Tinie Tempah, Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers,
Frank Turner and Franz Ferdinand are going to need your
best singalong voices with more hits between them than
we’d be able to mention.
Across the site there is a world of wonder to experience,
so soak up the atmosphere and enjoy every minute: after
all, Kendal Calling only comes around once a year.
CHARITIES
Both within and away from the fields, Kendal Calling
is committed to supporting and championing the local
community and charities. Over the years, you have
helped Kendal Calling raise over £150,000, and in
2016 alone, we were able to donate over £40,000 to
local charities with your help – so, THANK YOU! It
is a fantastic achievement and we couldn’t have done
it without you. Below, you can see how our donations
help lots of different people from all walks of life.
GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND
Festival founder Andy and marketing manager Jamie Smith’s nana
Beatrice Cottril was chairwoman of the Flyde coast branch of Guide
Dogs For The Blind for 14 years. Each year she completed a 16-mile
sponsored walk pushing her friend in a wheelchair down Blackpool
Promenade – right up until her 87th birthday – raising over
£1,000,000! Despite joining her on a few of these walks over the
years, Andy is sad to admit that he never completed the entire walk
himself, something he very much regrets. You may notice we have
collection tins for Guide Dogs For The Blind on many of the bars
across site. For personal reasons, we’re going to take the unusual
step and personally match all donations placed in these tins over the
weekend. This goes some way to carrying on her legacy.
The money donated by Kendal Calling changes the lives of people
affected by sight loss, helping to fund training for guide dogs – from
those tentative first days with a puppy walker through to more
advanced training at guide dog school, and eventually matching
them with the right owner. Guide Dogs For The Blind is a national
charity and does not receive income from the government – any
guide dogs you see are a result of hard work fundraising by Guide
Dogs For The Blind.
DAVID LYNCH FOUNDATION
All proceeds raised from Tim Peaks Diner from the sale of Tim
Peaks coffee and Totes Amazeballs cereal go to the David Lynch
Foundation. The brainchild of Twin Peaks maverick (from which Tim
Burgess’ festival haunt gets its name), the foundation is dedicated
to helping people of all ages and from all walks of life in the UK and
worldwide overcome stress, suffering and hardship, while promoting
creativity, happiness, success and peace.
PENRITH LIONS
The Penrith Lions are a volunteer led organisation that help local
families in distress and provide opportunities for both young people
and senior citizens in the local area to flourish. Previous projects
have included financial help for a young mothers group in Penrith,
sponsorship of a local youth football club, and organising the seniors
Christmas concert. They’re what we’re all about here at Kendal –
community, family and being kind to one another.
ALDER HEY
Alder Hey Children’s Charity provides vital funds to make the
Liverpool hospital a truly world-class, patient-friendly hospital.
Serving over 270,000 young patients each year, funds are used to
buy life-saving medical equipment and support ground-breaking
medical research as well as to provide arts, play activities and family
services that otherwise simply wouldn’t be available to those in need
of cheering up.
NORTH WEST AIR AMBULANCE
Established in 1999, the North West Air Ambulance charity flies
life-saving missions throughout the region from its bases in Blackpool
and Manchester. Flying 365 days a year, the vital life-saving services
serves a population of around eight million people yet receives
almost no central government or lottery funding – the majority of its
running costs are donated by supporters and members of the public.
CUMBRIA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
Kendal Calling’s home of Cumbria was hit by severe flooding in
December 2015, devastating many people’s homes and livelihoods.
We support Cumbria Community Foundation and their flood fund,
which is being used to provide emergency relief grants to people
whose homes were flooded or would have to evacuate, as well as to
support additional financial burdens associated with the flooding, and
to provide counselling, advice and guidance to those who need it.
HOSPICE AT HOME
Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland provide high quality
care and support for adults who have palliative and end of life care
needs, as well as supporting their families and carers. The group
brings the skills, ethos and practical care associated with the hospice
movement into the comfort of the home environment, providing
services that allow patients to be cared for at home if they so wish.
stereophonics
Welsh titans Stereophonics have plenty of
diamonds in their back catalogue, but they’re
still mining their talents to make new music.
As a member of a band which has trod the world’s
festival stages for over 20 years, you’d expect
STEREOPHONICS bassist Richard Jones to have a few
stories and he doesn’t disappoint.
Whether it’s headlining Glastonbury in 2002 or
flying into Japan for the legendary Fuji Rock Festival, Stereophonics have
been there, done it and bought the T-shirt, with Richard the only everpresent
alongside frontman Kelly Jones (no relation) since the band’s
inception in 1992 in the village of Cwmaman in South Wales.
“We did Glastonbury in 2002 but neither myself or Kelly can
remember actually being on stage,” he laughs. “It was really, really hectic
back then and I remember it was crammed in between doing some
European shows and going out to America.
“We got down to Glastonbury the night before, did the gig and were
then shipped off on the bus to Heathrow to fly to America. It was a
whirlwind back then…”
Since winning a Brit Award in 1998 for Best New Group,
Stereophonics’ achievements are worth recalling. They are the eighth
group to achieve five consecutive UK number one albums in a list that
includes The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, ABBA, Genesis, Oasis, Blur and U2.
They’ve enjoyed 11 top 10 singles including the number one Dakota, and
their hits collection, Decade In The Sun, sold 1.2 million copies in the UK.
But far from looking back, Richard and Kelly are determined that
Stereophonics keep moving forward and, with the band having finished
work on their tenth album this year, this summer sees them return to the
fray with a renewed relish.
“It’s all done and dusted now so we’re hoping to release the album
around November and, at the moment, we’re in the rehearsal room
getting ready for all the summer shows and festivals,” says Richard, about
the follow up to 2015’s chart topping Keep The Village Alive.
“We’ve really caught the momentum of the last album and run with it.
There were songs there that brought us to a younger audience again and
on this album, we wanted to keep things fresh.
“There are songs which sound unlike things we’ve done before and
there are one or two tracks which will surprise people. Hopefully the
public will like it and we can start throwing a few in the set and see what
fans think of them.”
Newer tracks like C’est La Vie and Graffiti On The Train seemed
to give Stereophonics a new lease of life and, while many of their
contemporaries reform and play their most famous albums in full, Richard
wants the band to be bracketed alongside the newer acts they play
amongst this summer.
“When we first started we knew we wanted to be in it for the long
haul and that getting signed was just the beginning of a lot of hard work,”
he says.
“When we’re in the studio recording, we want every album to be a
new chapter of the band – we don’t want to just rehash old stuff. We try
to push forward and stay as contemporary as possible.
“That’s what drives us – performing at festivals and seeing the up and
coming bands and the hunger that they’ve got is great because we think
we’ve still got a lot of that and we can compete with them. We love it
when we’re thrown up amongst them!”
Of course, there was a time when Stereophonics were a new band
themselves and Richard has fond memories of those early days at the
bottom of the bill rather than as a headline act.
“We were fortunate enough to do one of the first V Festivals in
1997,” he remembers. “We’d gone to V96 in Warrington when Pulp
were headlining thanks to Richard Branson because we’d signed to V2.
8 | KENDAL CALLING

He signed us a month before and then we blagged him for some tickets!
“The next year he got us on at the festival after we’d been doing the
pubs and clubs for a year. We were on the big stage and it was just a
blast. We had half an hour and I think we managed to cram about ten
songs into it and we didn’t stop for breath.”
“We’ve been really fortunate doing festivals all over Europe with some
amazing people on the bill. I’ve got great memories of doing Fuji Rock in
1998 – Elvis Costello, Bjork and Beck were all on the same stage and I
remember thinking ‘Wow’.
“That’s what drives us –
performing at festivals and
seeing the up and coming
bands and the hunger that
they’ve got is great”
“It’s been like that ever since really – turning up at festivals and even
if we’re headlining they’ll be such a great variety of bands playing that it’s
like living the dream.
“At Kendal, you’ve got the Manics on – we haven’t played with them
for about 15 years so it’ll be great to see them.”
Even before Stereophonics released their classic debut 20 years ago,
Richard was no stranger to festival life.
“My first ever gig was Donnington when I was 14,” he recalls.
“I somehow convinced my mum it was a good idea and I went with my
brother’s best friend on the back of his motorbike. What could possibly
wrong?!
“It was one of the best weekends of my teenage life – there was
nobody to answer to and everyone looked out for me. As long as I was
sleeping in the same tent each night he was happy. Iron Maiden, Kiss,
Guns N’ Roses and David Lee Roth all played.
“I went to Glastonbury and Reading as a punter and we used to travel
all over the shop – I remember going to Hyde Park to see Pearl Jam and
Neil Young.
As both a festival-goer and a veteran of dozens of headline slots,
Richard knows exactly what the fans expect from Stereophonics’ first
visit to Kendal Calling.
“We’ve got about 90 minutes and there’s obvious songs you can’t
leave out of your set,” he adds.
“The crowd have come to see your big hits so you don’t try and be
too clever at a festival and go all obscure. You give them what they want
but then also show them where you’re going, so we’re going to slip two
new ones in.
“It’s nerve-racking,” he admits. “Whenever you play a new song for
the first time the adrenalin is really high. Up until then you’ve been
playing new songs for yourself but then you’ve got to convince people to
listen but usually people are perceptive to it – you’re making them feel
special by playing them something for the first time.”
HAPPY MONDAYS
PRESENTED BY AMAZON MUSIC
Thursday night at Kendal Calling promises to be even more fun-filled than
usual, with HAPPY MONDAYS joining the party! Brought to the fields in
association with Amazon Music, the legendary baggy troupe are stalwarts
of the British music scene, and have amassed an army of fans since they
first began twisting melons in Salford back in the early 80s. Shaun Ryder,
Bez and crew are back on the trail as they prepare to release a new
album, their first in over a decade. Step on!
THURSDAY | 19:50 – 20:40
FRANZ FERDINAND
Indie stalwarts and Domino Records darlings FRANZ FEDINAND
broke onto the scene in 2004 with their Mercury Prize winning and
Grammy-nominated eponymous debut album. Emerging as part of
Glasgow’s burgeoning art scene, since then, they’ve churned out some of
the most interesting, artful indie rock of the past decade and have kept
evolving. Never running out of ideas, in 2015 they merged with weirdo
glam rockers Sparks (of This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us
fame) to form the supergroup FFS (Franz Ferdinand and Sparks, to you).
Back performing as Franz Ferdinand, expect the best danceable festival
anthems all weekend with these lot in town.
THURSDAY | 21:20 – 22:50
TINIE TEMPAH
TINIE TEMPAH has been well established internationally as a UK
rap and pop superstar since his rise to fame in 2009, despite having
been to Southampton but never to Scunthorpe (that last quip comes
from 2009 mega hit Pass Out for those not in the know). As well as
performing crowd pleasers such as Frisky and Miami 2 Ibiza, Kendal
Calling will see the UK festival debut of Tinie’s new album Youth,
including Radio 1xtra favourites Mamacita and Tinashe collaboration
Text From Your Ex. Without a shadow of a doubt, Tinie Tempah
will bring heaps of energy and danceable tunes onto the main stage,
upping the heat and the tempo.
SUNDAY | 21:20 – 22:50
The Beach Boys legend and songwriting
and production maestro talks Pet
Sounds ahead of one of the last
performances of the seminal album,
right here at Kendal Calling
There are few artists who can legitimately be spoken of in the
same breath as giants like Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry and those
moptopped lads from Liverpool who everyone seems to like,
but BRIAN WILSON doubtless has a place in such company.
The Beach Boys founder member and driving force created some
of the most mesmerising harmonies, pop hooks and timeless songs
ever produced.
His legacy will live on long after you and I have departed this
mortal coil. It is with great anticipation, then, that we welcome
the Godlike Genius to Kendal Calling. Wilson stops off to perform
the seminal album Pet Sounds in full for one of the final times – if
any festival slot deserves the adjective ‘unmissable’, it’s this one.
“Well, yes, it’s sad. I’m very sentimental about that album. It’s so,
so special,” Wilson tells us ahead of his visit, about the prospect of
finally drawing the curtain on this celebratory album tour after two
years of emotional shows
The 75 year-old picked out the luscious God Only Knows as
the track which is “for sure” the one he enjoys playing the most.
As well as this, Kendal Callers can expect bona fide classics such
as Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Sloop John B and the spine-tingling Good
Vibrations, played by “a killer band [which includes Beach Boys
co-founder Al Jardine], beautiful harmonies and a great show,”
according to the ever-modest Wilson.
“It’s one of the top five best albums ever made,” Wilson tells
us, and it’s hard to argue. Pet Sounds has topped Best Albums Of
All Time from the likes of NME, The Times and Mojo. His restless
studio work gave birth to many original techniques and cemented
his reputation as a production innovator as well as gifted songwriter.
A magnum opus, and a unique record in terms of its innovative
production, glorious musicianship and pop credentials, Wilson
explains how Pet Sounds, and his music in general, “expresses my
feelings and makes people happy”. Nothing feels truer to The Beach
Boys’ sunshine-drenched aesthetic – sounds which capture eternal
youth, hopefulness and fun summer shenanigans. Perfect then to
appear on our Main Stage in the evening summer sun.
GLOW TENT
The GLOW TENT is where fresh dance music and electronica
lives and breathes. Having hosted legendary DJs from all over
the world, this year’s festival welcomes Example + DJ Wire,
Bugzy Malone, and DJ sets from massive names – Jungle,
Faithless, Mike Skinner and those mad ones at Kurupt FM, and
even more. Have your earplugs at the ready and be prepared
for Kendal Calling to be launched into the stratosphere.

ELI AND FUR
Having started out in 2013, ELI AND FUR have won over audiences
across the globe with their perfect blend of killer vocals and infectious
melodies. Having performed alongside acts such as Hot Since 82, Maceo
Plex and Seth Troxler, this year sees the duo play festivals including
Creamfields, Bestival and Glastonbury. Their debut track, You’re So High
has amassed a whopping 20 million plays on YouTube, while they’ve been
tipped by Beatport as Artists to Watch. All the more reason to watch
this hotly-tipped duo at Kendal.
FRIDAY | 21:30 – 22:30
MIKE SKINNER [DJ SET]
MIKE SKINNER is a man who needs little introduction. The brains behind
the much-lauded hip hop, garage act The Streets whose success and
original sound changed UK music forever (and also won them a Brit and
an Ivor Novello). Since retiring the band in 2011, Skinner brings to Kendal
Calling one of his mind-blowing DJ sets. During his sets, his musical
choices are as eclectic as ever; selecting everything you wanna hear from
classic hip hop and house to assaults of drum and bass, Skinner will take
the roof off the Glow Tent at this year’s Kendal Calling.
SATURDAY | 23:10 – 00:30
T Q D
T Q D is a collaboration between garage artists Royal-T, DJ Q and Flava
D. Far from a run of the mill supergroup, t q d is simply three friends
coming together to bring brilliant bass and garage inspired music to the
dancefloor. With unforgettable sets at such legendary establishments and
events as the Boiler Room and The Warehouse Project, t q d released
their debut album UKG earlier this year, which sees them mash up garage
influences and hip hop. The group boldly navigate the full spectrum
of the garage sound, featuring everything from energetic basslines, to
haunting Burial-esque landscapes.
SUNDAY | 00:00 – 01:00
KURUPT FM
KURUPT FM are the best thing to come out of Brentford in forever.
Hosting West London’s finest pirate radio station they’ve have been
causing a ruckus in radio and TV land. Anyone who’s seen BBC3 hit
comedy show People Just Do Nothing will know that a) they’re hilarious
and b) they’re actually pretty good at grime for comedians. They’ve
told Donald Trump they’ll “destroy him with a lyrical wall”, they’ve said
“house music is boring” and they’ve collaborated with the likes of Craig
David and Ed Sheeran. From this alone, the troupe are definitely doing
their bit for the world of grime, so if you’re partial to BBK, you’ll be a
massive fan of Kurupt FM after this set.
BRITISH
SEA POWER
The Lake District’s very own hometown
heroes BRITISH SEA POWER epitomise
the cult creativity, fun and friendliness
that make Kendal Calling what it is.
It was all fields round here when Yan Scott Wilkinson of BRITISH
SEA POWER was a boy. Okay, it still is, but those fields weren’t
filled with world-class rock, dance and hip hop acts turning his Lake
District home into a cultural Krakatoa for three days.
“When I was at school growing up, I couldn’t have imagined a
festival with Dizzee Rascal and good bands, and the size of it,” he says.
“We used to have gigs in the local working man’s club and a couple of
pubs in town.”
As proud locals (two members still “kind of” live in Kendal)
British Sea Power have almost become the festival’s house band,
playing regularly since it was first based at Abbot Hall in town and
watching it grow into an award-winning phenomenon and the World’s
Friendliest Festival. “There’s a level of music excitement that you
don’t get anywhere else just cos of the people who go there,”
Yan says. “They’re just super excited they can go to a festival they don’t
have to travel to Glastonbury for. Is it the friendliest festival in the
world? It’s in the top three. It’s certainly the most pissed-up festival in
the world!”
British Sea Power, in their inspired outlier way, epitomise Kendal
Calling too – a homegrown, inclusive cult band from rural Cumbria
(via Reading and Brighton) that has thrived off-grid. “I kind of like it,”
Yan says of their Indie Rock’s Big Secret status. “I think cults are
quite good. I take it for granted, that’s just our slot we sort of fit into –
cult weirdoes. I don’t think we’re actually that weird really. I can sort
of understand it though, especially the way we started off – we were
quite intense. We’re trying to upgrade from national treasures to
international treasures.”
“Is it the friendliest festival in the
world? It’s in the top three.”
To whit: new-wave-ish new album Let The Dancers Inherit The Party,
an album that finds British Sea Power lifting their heads out of the
history books and blinking wildly at the present day. A band long
associated with albums and shows with a natural or historical bent –
this is the band, remember, who followed up their Mercury nominated
2008 Top Ten album Do You Like Rock Music? with a rework of the
soundtrack to a 1930s documentary about Irish fishermen called
Man Of Aran – on this crowd-funded seventh outing British Sea
14 | KENDAL CALLING

Power focus on contemporary politics more than ever before,
albeit with their trademark abstract poetic filter firmly engaged.
Guitarist Martin Noble has said it concerns “politicians perfecting the
art of unabashed lying, social media echo chambers and electronic toys
to keep us befuddled.”
“It’s a kind of a domestic take on politics,” Yan says. “Politics and
personal life can all get mixed up, and generally does for everybody.
Since the election it’s been pretty cool, everyone’s pretty excited.
There’s a bit of energy. At the end of last year everyone was just so
depressed, like ‘Oh God! The world’s rubbish innit. It’s gonna get more
rubbish’. I’ve tried to find a positive response to that. We’d always have
good, fun songs but they’d all be dragging to different directions. For
this one we’ve tried to get a bit of a focus to the mood of it and make
it current and reflect modern times.”
As befits the indie rock wing of the National Trust, recording
for the album took place in bassist Neil Hamilton’s home studio in Skye
and Lympne Castle in Kent, which sounds far more princely and
extravagant than it was. “We went there because it was cheap,”
Scott laughs. “I’m becoming a fan of really basic, small studios, I’ve
done a 180 degree turn on that one. I just like a small room where
there’s a pub not too far away and it feels like normal life.”
Expect British Sea Power to be one of the bands responding best
this weekend to between-song chants of ‘Oh Jeremy Corbyn’, then.
But don’t expect the wild drunken guitar-flinging of old. Yan’s had one
too many Fenders to the skull for any of that nonsense. “Since I threw
a guitar on my head I’ve sort of calmed things down,” he laughs. “I
used to do this stupid trick of throwing the guitar up in the air and I
always caught it. I thought it was really cool. Then I did it when I was
really pissed up and sort of forgot. It just landed on my head and it was
very embarrassing.”
Ah Gibsonius Smashyerheadinus: not the usual sort of airborne life
BSP generally keep an eye out for. Aren’t you fellers twitchers? “I’m
more into having a bit of an explore, having a walk,” Yan says. “I’m not an
official birdwatcher. I quite like trees, hills. I like getting out and about, it’s
good for you.”
CALLING OUT
CALLING OUT is where the newest and most exciting acts get to
spread their wings; the stage’s multiple alumni reads like a ‘who’s
who’ of the past decade, with behemoths like Mumford & Sons,
The 1975, London Grammar, Ghostpoet and the Lake District’s own
Wild Beasts having all played the Calling Out stage. This year, it
welcomes intimate performances from artists including Loyle
Carner, The Hunna, Field Music and Honeyblood. Wanna catch the
next big thing? Park yourself here for the weekend.

LOYLE CARNER
FIELD MUSIC
Made up of brothers Peter and David Brewis, the aptly-named FIELD
MUSIC are prolific when it comes to putting out wholesome indie pop,
with their 2012 album, Plumb, even nominated for the illustrious Mercury
Prize. The Sunderland-based duo’s latest effort, Commontime, was
written and recorded at their Wearside studio after 4 years of solo work
and various soundtracks and collaborations. Drawing comparisons to the
likes of Talking Heads, Hall and Oates and Genesis, Field Music come to
Kendal Calling, with their unique spin on art rock in tow.
SATURDAY | 20:30 – 21:15
LOYLE CARNER is one of the UK’s best new hip hop acts. With his first
live show being a support slot for MF DOOM, the South London emcee’s
career has only gone up from there. Creating a sound reminiscent of old
school hip hop with modern UK influences, Carner released his A Little
Late EP in 2014 to huge acclaim, while his debut album, released earlier
this year, Yesterday’s Gone, has been universally lauded, and even broke
the UK Top 20. For thoughtful hip hop heavily influenced by the realities
of South London life, Carner is your man.
FRIDAY | 21:45 – 22:45
SHAME
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE
JANE FONDA AEROBIC VHS?
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE JANE FONDA AEROBIC VHS? are a funny
band – both in the comic and strange senses of the word. Only in good
ways, of course – besides the long name, the Finnish trio’s music is built
around melodies played on old Casio and Eco organs and their sound
is influenced by everything from garage and punk rock, to doowop, 60s
soul and girl groups. Their debut album, Teenage Sweetheart, landed in
2015, with a hotly anticipated follow up expected later this year. Watch
this space – HYESTJFAV’s mix of girl group melodies, punk riffs and
pummelling drums make them a band you need to know.
SUNDAY | 13:25 – 13:55
One of the many emerging bands to rise out of the South London punk
scene, SHAME are raw talent embodied. With the single release of Gold
Hole/The Lick in late 2016, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Shame offer
a divisive yet very primal sound, both musically and lyrically. This year has
seen them develop their niche further with titles such as Visa Vulture, a
track the band have called “a love song to Theresa May.” Definitely ones
to keep an eye on this year – their live performances are becoming the
stuff of legend (think cockney Sleaford Mods). Definitely not one to miss
then.
SATURDAY | 18:00 – 18:45
TIM PEAKS DINER
Created and curated by The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess, TIM
PEAKS DINER has become a familiar sight at many a UK festival,
although Kendal Calling was its very first port of call. Anything
is possible here. Aside from serving his own fair trade Tim Peaks
coffee, there will be DJ sets from Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai), Nik
Void (Factory Floor) and punk legend Don Letts, as well as a set
from Tim Burgess himself. Expect tea, DJs, book readings, talks,
one-off gigs, spontaneous happenings, and, of course, chaos!

TIM
BURGESS
The Charlatans’ main man brings Tim
Peaks Diner to its Kendal home for
unmissable live performances and –
as always – some special surprises.
If you haven’t heard of Tim Peaks Diner, where’ve you been?
The brainchild of The Charlatans’ frontman TIM BURGESS, its
origins lie in a serendipitous tale of a tweet getting out of hand
and a music community coming together. A diner-cum-stage,
Tim Peaks hosts secret sets, DJ sets, high-profile talks and special
guests, along with some of the best brews of the caffeinated kind you’ll
find at any festival. Having started in our lovely leafy confines here at
Kendal Calling, it’s since gone nationwide and has seen more indie
legends than you can shake a stick at rock up and perform impromptu.
With everything from punk icons in conversation to the best new bands
and late night DJs scheduled for this year’s outing at Kendal, we chat
with Tim Burgess – the man behind the pun – about his dream line-up,
our “log cabin of love”, and his plans for Christmas (yep, you heard it
here first).
By now, Tim Peaks Diner, will be a concept familiar with lots of
festival goers – how did the idea for Tim Peaks first come about,
and how has it evolved since its conception?
It started with a tweet. I asked if anyone fancied a coffee. It was six years
ago and I was starting out on Twitter – it went from coffee orders, to
getting a logo, making a selling 250 mugs in an hour and realising it was
turning into something amazing. That was all on social media – it then
came to life in the real world and it’s been such an adventure. I’ve played
a few times and joined Seahawks, Nick Heyward, Grumbling Fur, Roddy
Frame and Edwyn Collins plus lots of secret sets from the likes of Peter
Doherty and Blossoms. Everyone loves being involved so in that way it›s
quite easy. Keeping it going from 9am to 3am is the fun part!
A little birdy tells us that Kendal Calling was the first festival to
host Tim Peaks Diner in its very apt log cabin near the woods –
do you always look forward to coming back here?
It certainly was and will always be our spiritual home – the log cabin of
love. There’s an amazing team of people that we meet up with there
and there’s a high level of excitement on arrival – it’s always one of my
favourite weekends of the year
What’s been your favourite moment from doing Tim Peaks
at Kendal over the years?
I think it will always be the first year we did. Edwyn Collins was
recovering from his stroke and we invited him to come along and do
some of the brilliant drawings of birds that were helping him with his
rehabilitation – when it got nearer the time he said he would like to do
some songs. He couldn’t play guitar at that stage but asked if it was ok
if someone came to play for him. That someone was Aztec Camera’s
Roddy Frame – they asked me to do a couple of songs with them.
Your line-ups are always impressive but with no limitations
(we’re thinking dead or alive) what would your dream Tim
Peaks Diner line-up be?
Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Ariel Pink, The Rolling Stones, The Clash
and Chastity Belt.
Are there any new artists that you’re really excited about at
the moment?
Yes! Average Sex, Tear and Daniel O’Sullivan are well worth checking out
Who are your top picks for Kendal Calling?
Is there anyone you’re really looking forward to seeing?
Tear and Daniel O’Sullivan plus The Pheromoans and Nik Void’s DJ
set. They’re all on at Tim Peaks. Brian Wilson performing Pet Sounds is
like a bucket list kind of performance – Loyle Carner sounds great too.
Oh, and Nico Mrallegro’s first ever DJ set. That’ll all keep me busy!
We know you usually surprise festivalgoers with some amazing
secret sets. Anything planned for Kendal this year?
There are but I’m sworn to secrecy – I might tweet some clues
nearer the time…
Finally, you’ve branched out into coffee, cereal (with Totes
Amazeballs), writing books and you’re always making music -
what’s next for the mythical creature that is Tim Burgess?
A Christmas song, with a musical hero of mine.
That’s a world exclusive for you.
PURPLE STARDUST
Conceived in the summer of 2016 by DJ Simon Price, after losing
musical legends David Bowie and Prince in the first half of the year,
PURPLE STARDUST is a celebration of the artist who defined the 70s
and the artist who defined the 80s. The DJ set-cum-spectacle sees
Bowie and Prince meet head on, in the form of wall to wall hits and
video mashups. It’s the Dancing In The Street collaboration we always
wanted (no offence Jagger). For Suffragette City meets Erotic City and
everything in between.
FRIDAY | 00:00 – 02:00
NIK VOID [DJ SET]
One half of London band Factory Floor, whose post-industrial sounds
is made up synths, live drums and noise, NIK VOID is a force to be
reckoned with in the world of electronic music. Together with Gabriel
Gurnsey, she creates a punishing electronic landscape as part of Factory
Floor, whose second record, 25 25, was released by James Murphy’s (of
LCD Soundsystem fame) DFA Records in 2016. Also an übercool DJ
and producer, creating avant-garde, compositions, as well as leftfield, yet
kinetic remixes for other artists, Void brings her strange and multiple
talents to the Tim Peaks Diner for this Kendal Calling.
SATURDAY | 00:00 – 01:00
Tim Burgess, Brix Smith Start
And Steve Hanley In Conversation
With Dave Haslam
BRITPOPORAMA
A smorgasbord of counter culture faces assemble, naturally, in Tim Peaks
Diner. TP main man Tim Burgess is joined by post-punk legends and
former members of The Fall, BRIX SMITH START and STEVE HANLEY,
who now both play with Brix And The Extricated (who’ll also make a live
appearance at Tim Peaks). Writer, broadcaster and DJ DAVE HASLAM
completes the quartet, who are primed to chat about their time in the
punk whirlpool of the 70s and 80s and the indie love-in of the 90s, as
well as map out their future plans.
SATURDAY | 15:30 – 16:15
After playing a spectacular set at Kendal Calling last year,
BRITPOPORAMA is back, bringing their eclectic mixes to the Tim Peaks
Diner. Featuring plenty of hits and indie bangers, Britpoporama glides
between funk and punk, soul and disco, and lifts from the likes of Talking
Heads, Fleetwood Mac and Blondie. Expect plenty of surprises along the
way, plus tracks that you will know and love. It’s the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll
party. Mod target t-shirts optional.
WOODLANDS
The WOODLANDS are here to broaden the mind, with international
artists such as Mexrrissey making an appearance, as well as a special 50th
Anniversary Celebration of Sgt. Peppers. We’re delighted to announce
that we’re continuing our partnership with Off Axis on the Woodlands
Stage, showcasing the cream of new talent from across the UK at this
year’s Kendal Calling. Off Axis is a network of independent artists from
67 towns and cities across the country, all working together to bring
exceptional live music to new audiences, in a way never possible before.
You can find out more at whatisoffaxis.com/for-fans – and see what all the
fuss is about at our Woodland Stage.

MEXRRISSEY
Morrissey is a big deal in Mexico. His classic songs of love, loss and
longing, complete with emotive imagery and very English references, have
found a huge audience there. Raised on a diet of The Smiths and Viva
Hate, as well as rancheras and mariachis, MEXRRISSEY are not afraid to
merge the two. The result is not a gimmick – far from it. It is simply the
joyous celebration of two different cultures, sharing their mutual love of
Morrissey and The Smiths, taking a concept that might read silly on paper
and turn it into something truly life-affirming.
SATURDAY | 21:45 – 22:45
SHE DREW
THE GUN:
FESTIVAL ANTHEMS
With two years of touring under their belts,
Merseyside melancholic guitar poppers SHE
DREW THE GUN let us in on their ultimate
festival anthems, before they play a muchanticipated
set in our beautiful Woodlands.
LONDON AFRICAN GOSPEL
CHOIR SINGS GRACELAND
After discovering a bootleg of South African township music, Paul
Simon famously recorded with South African musicians for two
weeks in Johannesburg. This session formed the backbone of his
most successful album, Graceland, which merged pop and rock with
zydeco and mbaqanga. THE LONDON AFRICAN GOSPEL CHOIR
is a collective of talented African musicians, singers and dancer who
specialise in African Gospel music, who take to our Woodlands
perform this legendary album in its entirety. Their creative re-imagining
will take us from the synth led classic You Can Call Me Al to the
acapella Homeless, and everything in between.
SUNDAY | 21:35 – 22:55
THE VEGAN LEATHER
With their artistic electronic sound, this art pop outfit from Paisley
certainly lives up to a band name like THE VEGAN LEATHER.
They’re unusual, unique and you won’t find or see or hear a band like
them. Naturally, they’ve been a hit across the UK festival scene this
year with their live performances. Songs like Days Go By and Shake
It prove that they’re bringing something fresh to the electronic pop
scene. Though reminiscent of bands like Hot Chip, and citing electro
art pop greats Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem and Metronomy as
influences, the four piece are still defining their own sound.
FRIDAY | 19:15 – 19:45
The Cribs – Men’s Needs
A staple band in our travel playlist, ten years of angsty indie teen
fueled memories unashamedly let rip whenever we hear this,
especially for our long-haired bass lover from Liverpool, Jack.
Earth, Wind & Fire - September
This would be the first of what we like to call the ‘Holy Trinity’ of
Glastonbury moments. No amount of mud or rain over the five
days could stop us all having a boogie to these disco legends on the
last night. A year on and we still go all out when this family party
tune comes on.
Chic - We Are Family
Another family party tune and the second installment of our Glasto
Trinity. The sun was cracking and drinks were flowing when the
legend that is Nile Rogers came on. We got to groove to this tune
with our labelmates and all round good pals The Sundowners,
getting all emotional singing ‘We Are Skeleton Key’ at the top of
our voices.
Future Islands - Seasons
This man can do a Russian folk dance in a suit whilst holding a
melody. The last of our Glasto Trinity and an absolute euphoric
anthem of the summer – it’s one that gets played a lot on our
travels. Possibly the most bizarre experience was seeing Dynamo,
Tilda Swinton and Brad Pitt having a casual dance right next to us –
and yes, they are just as beautiful in person.
Weezer – Say It Ain’t So
It’s notoriously difficult to get to the big bands at SXSW. After
failed attempts to get into Wu Tang and Jimmy Eat World, we
made sure to nerd it up and get there before doors for these, a
plan that almost failed because someone couldn’t hold their liquor.
Tankus The Henge - Smiling Makes The Day Go Quicker
Dancing on pianos with full on sing along tunes – they’re the kind of
rogue gypsy band that would charm you till morning and then run
off with your daughter. Roll on Kendal Calling…
HOUSEPARTY
With no neighbours to annoy and some of the best DJs
around playing great records, Kendal Calling hosts one of the
best soirées around at HOUSEPARTY. Like an actual house
party, there’s furniture to lounge around on (or jump on) and
a kitchen to hang out in (after all, you’ll always find us in the
kitchen at parties). Headed up with live performances during
the day, a night at Houseparty is as great night out and
there’s no need to call your folks for a lift home either.

DENISE JOHNSON
Throughout the 90s, DENISE JOHNSON’s soulful vocals were featured
on records by a who’s who of Madchester bands, so much so that
her singing has become an essential element of the genre’s sound.
From Manchester’s post-punk avant funksters A Certain Ratio to the
psychedelic Scottish blues of Primal Scream, George Clinton, Ian Brown,
New Order and a few more in between, we can guarantee you’ll own a
record with her voice on it. From the legendary Haçienda to Wembley
Arena, and now to Kendal’s Houseparty, the voice of this Mancunian soul
star is instantly recognisable – expect some of the best sing-a-longs of
the weekend.
SUNDAY | 14:20 – 15:00
PARADISIA
There are a few notable things about PARADISIA: for a start their
harmonies are angelic and unshakeable, and come together to produce
a striking trio who are bound to soar to the top with their new album
Sound Of Freedom. With their unique aesthetic and their Stevie Nicksesque
vocals shining through on singles such as Warpaint, they’re bound
to take over Radio 1 in the coming months. They’ve supported plenty of
famous acts such as Bruce Springsteen, and, if you come and watch them
at our Houseparty, their set will convince you that it won’t be very long
until they’re a headline act themselves.
FRIDAY | 16:30 – 17:00
THE EVERLY
PREGNANT BROTHERS
THOMAS TURGOOSE [DJ SET]
Having worked as an actor from an early age, THOMAS TURGOOSE
is perhaps best known for his role as Shaun Fields in Shawn Meadows’
hugely acclaimed tale of skinheads and coming of age in This Is England.
With him reprising the role in This Is England ’86, ’88 and ’90, Turgoose
now turns his attention to the world of music. He has already played DJ
sets up and down the country, and now bring his amazing skills as a DJ to
Kendal Calling. Prepare yourself for hit after hit, carefully selected by the
man himself.
SUNDAY | 18:45 – 19:30
THE EVERLY PREGNANT BROTHERS are pretty much the definition
of Yorkshire – we challenge you to look it up in the dictionary. Hailing
from Sheffield, a ukulele renditions band might sound not exactly rock
‘n’ roll. But that doesn’t matter, with Yorkshire parodies of songs like
Sex On Fire by Kings of Leon (instead of sex, it’s the chip pan that’s
ablaze) and Rehab by Amy Winehouse (“they tried to make me go to
Rotherham”), their set on the Houseparty stage will be pure Northern
hedonism in a homely environment. What more could you want?
things are asked to gather themselves for the Parade on Saturday at
your roars if you want to be heard!
Peaks in the past, expect heaps of fun this year. Alex will be joined by
very special guests and TV stars Craig Parkinson (from Line of Duty)
and Susan Lynch (from Happy Valley), for some very atmospheric story
reading too, while on Saturday kids can gear up for some super exciting
pizza making. Yum.
FAMILY AND KIDS CINEMA
If you fancy getting stuck into our #IntoTheWild theme this year, then
you better schedule in WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE – the tale of
Max, a lonely eight-year-old boy, who sails away to an island full of giant
beasts known as the Wild Things, who declare Max to be their king.
As well as a host of other kids favourites, there’s also FINDING DORY,
in which the amnesiac fish (with Nemo and Marlin in tow) travel
across the ocean to find Dory’s long-lost family. If you fancy a timeless
classic, then Disney’s FANTASIA, widely considered to be one of the
best animated films of all time, is for you. Its most famous sequence,
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, sees Micky Mouse attempting some of his
master’s magic tricks with things getting quickly out of hand, and is sure
to delight young and old alike.
CABIN IN THE WOODS
Written by Drew Goddard and Buffy creator God Joss Whedon in just
three days, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS is a horror satire film and a
modern cult classic. Starring a young Chris Hemsworth, The Cabin in
The Woods follows a group of college students who stay in an isolated
cabin in the woods, only to face an assault of zombies. However, two
technicians manipulate the unfolding events from the safety of an
underground. This meta horror comedy’s razor sharp, but loving satire
of the tired slasher film genre, whilst not minimising its scares, makes
this a must-see horror!
SLAVES
The punk duo are becoming accustomed
to their lives on the road, as they stop off
for a stint on the Kendal Main Stage.
Forming in 2012, punk duo SLAVES have seen an immense
rise to the upper echelons of indiedom (and the top end
of festival bills) in their mere five years of existence. With
Isaac Holman on vocals and drums and Laurie Vincent on
vocals, guitar and bass, the duo have released two albums so
far – 2015’s Are You Satisfied, and Take Control, which was released last
autumn.
When I speak to Isaac, he’s having his first day off in “literally weeks.”
Slaves are enjoying a busy year, touring the US and Europe non-stop
since March. “You feel a bit of pressure to do something good on your
day off but it’s nice to just do nothing!” he adds.
I ask him how the band got started in the first place. “We were both
in different bands and… it was a mutual appreciation. We got chatting
and it became apparent quite quickly that we were a good songwriting
partnership.” They were in a band previous to Slaves, Bareface, “but we
were bored of that band then quit and started Slaves.”
Both Isaac and Laurie come from Kent. It’s weird, I put to him, how
people up north often automatically think anyone with a southern accent
is posh. “Yeh, it’s either that or people think we’re Londoners. In the
grand scheme of things, I suppose we are middle class but I dunno…
we’re neither really.” Before Slaves took off, Isaac worked in care. “It was
home care,” he says. “I used to look after people in their own homes. It
was great. Apart from music that is the only thing I could imagine myself
still doing.”
He sounds a bit wistful. I wonder if it’s because Slaves became
successful so quickly, it happened so fast, the record deal with Virgin
EMI and two successful albums.
“We never really set out
to get down to the nitty
gritty of politics. We like to
keep it open, more about
personal politics.”
“People always say that but I don’t feel like it. People forget that
we slogged it out for a good few years, we played to no one and we
toured in Laurie’s car and it was quite relentless. It was a long time
before anything started happening. So, to us it wasn’t really that quick.
It’s weird isn’t it, with some bands it takes a really long time, some shoot
up straight away and I feel we’re somewhere in the middle.”
Yet there’s nothing middling about Slaves. Controversy over the name
aside, they’ve managed to carve out a very tasty niche for themselves
within the mainstream, which is no mean feat, with their politicised brand
of punk criticising inequalities within society, and capitalism, plus Brexit,
and the conflict in Syria. But they don’t fall into the trap of turning their
work into a droning lecture; they put the party into political, if you like.
Speaking of party, 2016’s Take Control was produced by an expert in
fighting for rights to do so – The Beastie Boys’ Mike D.
“We stayed in Los Angeles for a few weeks, and banged it out, yeh
it was a mad experience. Just to be staying out there was crazy,” Isaac
tells me.
I read in an interview that Laurie saw Mike as a third member of the
band, somehow, when you were making the record. Do you feel that
way too?
“Yeh, he was. Definitely. We let him in. we’d never really let anyone
in before like that. He was the exception.”
What do you mean by letting him in?
“It’s me and Laurie. It’s always been me and Laurie. We’re very
precious about our creative process – we’ve never let anyone into that
before. And it felt we did, with Mike.”
Slaves are notoriously unafraid to wear hearts on sleeves. Citing
Joe Strummer and “classic punk stuff” as huge influences in political
songwriting, Isaac reveals that it was not the band’s original intention to
go down that route. “We never really set out to do that, to get down to
the nitty gritty of politics. We like to keep it open, more about personal
politics. But, as time’s gone on and we’ve gained more traction and
everything happening politically, you do feel ‘We’ve got a voice, we’ve got
a platform, so why not use it?’”
One of the things that strikes me about Slaves, is that the shows
attract a very mixed audience. They pull in all age groups, from teenagers
right up to the original punks who were teenagers back in the 70s when
The Clash and The Sex Pistols were doing their thing.
“Maybe our music speaks to all kinds of people of all ages,” he says.
“Which is what we want. It’s nice I love seeing that, I love the varied
crowds turning up to our shows. I think it’s lovely.”
Perfect for festival bills then, Slaves are noted for their live
performance. The two of them so strong visually, Isaac a stand up
drummer rarely with his shirt on, and Laurie punching slogans at the
crowd. Watching them, you can’t help but soak up some of that fury, and
passion delivered at break neck speed.
“I’ve always liked being onstage, I like everything about it. I love the
aggression, I have a lot of energy at all times. I feel I can relax after I’ve
played a show.”
You’re quite an exhibitionist, don’t you think?
“Exhibitionist?” he seems a bit offended.
Well you are though aren’t you?
“Yeh, I think I’ve always been like that. Ever since I was a kid. I’m a bit
of an attention seeker, I guess!” he laughs.
And there’s nothing wrong with that, is there? Very much ready for
their Kendal Calling debut, they’ll stop off for a stomping set in the
Lakes before more dates in Europe, the US and Canada. But they are
still finding time to write songs for album number three. “We’re always
writing,” he says firmly. As for ultimate ambitions for the band in the
future, “I don’t really have one. Carry on with what we’re doing. It’s
already gone way further than we ever thought it would so it feels like
everything else is a bonus. We’re working hard, but we’re still winging it!”
an offer you just can’t pass up.
SUNDAY | 18:00 – 18:30
The disco punk Icelandic/British trio
talk art school origins and share
some of their top festival advice
There’s an old saying that all the best bands went to art
school. How does your music and visual art intersect?
So many unusual and exciting bands came through art school!
It’s exciting to follow in their footsteps. We’ve definitely had a
lot of fun, coming through art school allowed for a lot of creative
freedom. The idea of an intersection implies that creating in a
visual way and creating musically are separate processes. For us,
although ultimately you can differentiate between these processes,
they go so hand in hand, informing one another and it is very
hard to distinguish where one ends and the other begins. This
cross-platform attitude toward creating is definitely something
we developed and carried through from art school. We try to
embrace all aspects as a whole.
We’re really excited to have you at Kendal Calling for the
first time! Are there any songs out there that bring back
memories of the first festival you went to?
Rakel: Iceland Airwaves festival was my first proper festival, saw
Friendly Fires, loved it, and that song Paris was on repeat and we
were singing it on the street running between venues after that.
Bella and Alice: When we were 17 we went to Glastonbury
together – we grew up 20 minutes from the festival so it was sort
of a given you’d go. We didn’t know each other so well at the time
and ended up watched The Flaming Lips together – we’d never met
other girls who liked The Flaming Lips as much as we seemed to. It
felt like a special moment of finding your people and your music…
just a few more years until we found our other wife.
What’s in your festival survival kit?
Rakel: Snail masks
Alice: Normally I take full leather looks to many hot places and
at a festival this is totally the wrong thing to do. You are only
gonna sweat. It’s not worth it. Jus wear some shorts, or take
some scissors to cut your leather trousers down on site if it gets
too HOT.
Bella: Honestly, it would probably be enough warm clothes, UK
CHAI WALLAH
CHAI WALLAH is a moveable feast of festival goodness that has toured
all over the UK, racking up multiple awards along the way. This year’s
Kendal Calling is no exception. Their diverse roster is an eclectic mix of
dub, Afrobeat, hip hop, reggae, blues, folk, gypsy, rock and everything
in between. With a line-up including Mercury Prize nominated artist
The Comet Is Coming, Chai Wallah delivers the finest emerging artists,
an incredible sound system and legendary party vibes.
BROKEN BRASS ENSEMBLE
SMASH HIFI
BROKEN BRASS ENSEMBLE are not your run of the mill brass band.
Infusing hip hop, funk, soul, dance and jazz into traditional New Orleans
sounds, Broken Brass Ensemble breathe new life into NOLA’s great
brass tradition. The result is brass taken to new heights, chock-a-block
with vibrant bop-a-long moments that’ll transport you straight to
N’Awlins’ French Quarter. Currently taking Europe by storm, delivering
huge and hard-hitting brass sounds at their interactive and raucous live
shows. A force to be reckoned with.
FRIDAY | 00:00 – 01:10
HOLLY HOLDEN Y SU BANDA
A vibrant three-piece whose music is shaped by rocksteady, reggae,
soul, cumbia and bachata, HOLLY HOLDEN Y SU BANDA present an
incredible soundscape. Bittersweet, Spanish-infused love songs collide
with rhythms from the Caribbean for a sound that’s sure to whisk you
away to warmer climes. Their latest album Tropical Soul was released
earlier this year and they’ve been taking their irresistible sounds all over
the globe, making crowds dance in the Dominican Republic and Haiti,
New York night clubs and UK festivals alike.
SATURDAY | 13:40 – 14:30
SMASH HIFI is the coming together of former dancer for The Prodigy,
Leeroy Thornhill, and German DJ Marten Hørger. After meeting in the
hectic and legendary nightlife of Berlin, they bonded over a mutual love
of anything wild and fat. Together, they glide between breakbeat, bass,
hip hop and drum ‘n’ bass with their genre defying DJ sets. As Smash-Hifi,
Leeroy and Marten have killed it at clubs and festival all over the UK and
Europe, if you’re wanting to dance the night away, get to Chai Wallah.
FRIDAY | 01:30 – 02:30
THE COMET IS COMING
Formed in London in 2013, THE COMET IS COMING are a cosmic
jazz outfit whose work acts as the soundtrack for the apocalypse,
asking questions like ‘What sounds remain?’, ‘Who or what survives?’
and ‘Who is going to move us forward?’ Taking influences from the
likes of Zappa, Hendrix, Sun Ra and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop
(from which the band’s name comes from) their debut album,
Channel The Spirits, was nominated for the coveted Mercury Prize,
while their latest EP, Death To The Planet, was released as part of this
year’s Record Store Day.
RIOT JAZZ
Every year, RIOT JAZZ comes to Kendal Calling and turns plenty
of heads. With music ranging from fresh RnB, to spacey disco, to
speaker rattling dub, you’ll certainly be in for a great night as you
dive head first and discover hidden gems and much more. This
stage is one for the ravers, afrobeat nerds, thoughtful indie types,
chin-scratchers, whoever – this stage is for you!
RUBBER DUCK ORCHESTRA
CAOILFHIONN ROSE
THE RUBBER DUCK ORCHESTRA is made up of seven musicians
known for the chaotic, energetic live shows, made up of original music,
Roma favourites, as well as the austere melodies of Armenian and
Macedonian folk music. Drawing from a pool of collective experiences
and musical tastes from as far afield as Bosnia, Palestine, and East Africa,
The Rubber Duck Orchestra run amok with Serbian grooves, New
Orleans Jazz and their own theatrical performances. The result is a
crowd-pleasing romp – go see!
FRIDAY | 00:20 – 01:20
PLUME
Taking a wide range of influences from the likes of John Martyn, Alice
Coltrane, Steve Reich, and early Autechre, PLUME’s sound is always
going to be dynamic and eclectic. Their music encapsulates electronica,
hip hop, jazz and experimental music, with their live set conceived to
be a continuous piece of music. Yet, Plume lies in the void between
dance music, powerful songwriting and experimental improvisation.
With their latest EP, Limefield, released late last year, 2017 is going to
be hectic year for this up and coming outfit.
SUNDAY | 15:00 – 15:40
CAOILFHIONN ROSE is a singer-songwriter based in Manchester.
With an eclectic taste in music, her song writing influences range from
The Mummers and Broadcast, to Polly Paulusma and Rachel Sermanni.
As a part of several collaborations during her career, Rose is featured
on The Durutti Column’s 2014 album Chronicle LX:XL. Currently,
Caoilfhionn has also begun writing and recording her debut album with
Matthew Halsall of Gondwana Records, as well as completing a busking
tour across Europe.
SATURDAY | 13:20 – 13:50
STUTTER & TWITCH PRESENTS: AGBEKO
Taking inspiration from the golden age of 70s Nigerian, Ghanaian and
Ethiopian dance music, Mancunian afrobeat outfit AGBEKO create
a hyperactive hybrid of Afrobeat, funk and psychedelic. Made up of
11 members playing everything from blasting horns, loud guitar and
punchy organs, Agbeko’s music is held together by powerful grooves
and a love for their music that is truly infectious. The band are quickly
becoming a tour-de-force of the Manchester music scene, having
already performed high octane headline performances at Antwerp
Mansion and Band On The Wall.
FRANK TURNER
The modern troubadour with
a heart of song returns to the
Lakes to continue his lifelong
journey in music.
He’s a bona fide arena star these days but FRANK
TURNER, ever the down-to-earth everyman troubadour,
still relishes life on the wrong side of the velvet rope. “My
best memory of Kendal Calling was seeing Debbie Harry
from a distance,” he confides. “Last time we played,
Blondie were on immediately after us and my aim for the day was to say
hello to Debbie Harry. That completely failed because she was very much
not accessible to other people backstage, but I did see her getting in and
getting out of the limo to the stage. That made me feel quite good.”
Feeling good; a rare and welcome state for Frank. Despite reaching
the giddy heights of Wembley Arena after 10 years of gradually building
an avid and dedicated cult fanbase over 2065 gigs (and counting), his last
two albums, Tape Deck Heart and Positive Songs For Negative People
(both number two records), documented what he calls “a moment
of collapse in my personal life” involving the breakup of a long-term
relationship and substance abuse.
“People who tend to make music in general are people who, in broad
strokes, quite often have their issues with mental health and that kind of
thing,” he argues. “The music industry is a funny place to work because –
talking about alcohol – every single day I have a fridge full of booze, and
if I drink it all, then somebody’s gonna bring more. There’s definitely a
culture of bravado and celebration of that kind of thing around it, and it’s
not the most friendly and forgiving place if those are things that you have
an issue with. And, of course, there’s drugs and stuff like that around as
well… I’m pleased to say that I can look back on that now from a cleaner
and more adult place, but music’s always been a form of therapy for me,
I wrote a couple of records about it. But, at the same time, it’s nice to
draw a line under that and to look forward, move on and write songs
about different things now.”
Indeed, Frank arrives at Kendal fresh from Texas, where he’s been
making “a bunch of weird new songs that don’t sound like anything I’ve
done before” with ex-White Denim members turned producers Austin
Jenkins and Josh Block. “Positive Songs… was musically and stylistically
a restatement of principal in a way,” he explains. “It was about trying
to make a stripped back, head down punk rock record, and that was
everything I wanted it to be. That left me in a place where I was like
Neil Young said after he made Harvest – it made him want to drive into
a ditch having been in the middle of the road. I’ve been messing around
with different sounds, there’s a lot of loops and beats on the record,
quite a lot of soul influence as well. There’s some material that’s more in
my wheelhouse too, but there’s definitely some stuff on the record that
will surprise some of my fans.”
They won’t be particularly surprised, given Frank’s ‘woke’ nature, that
the new album will tackle the bizarre state of current global politics
head-on. “I hesitate to call it a political record because it’s not a Rage
Against the Machine album,” he says, “but it’s definitely a record about
the world as opposed to about me. I was actually in the middle of writing
a concept record about obscure women from the historical record,
which I finished and put on a shelf because the world went completely
bananas in 2016, and has continued on that theme into 2017. I had a
moment of thinking, ‘am I going to respond to this crisis in the West
and the political world that we live in by talking about women from the
18th Century?’”
By Nightingale’s nightie, no. And if anyone is well-placed to take the
pulse of the world, it’s Frank. He’s certainly seen enough of it. His cult
journeyman success has been grafted for – he fondly recalls early tours
of dive bars and bedrooms where he “spent a night or two smoking
cigarettes outside the train station waiting for the first train” because his
bed for the night fell through, and an early show in Edinburgh that drew
just one paying customer “and he was from Aberdeen, I managed to pull
precisely no people from the city of Edinburgh.” Does that make it more
satisfying to have built up an arena-filling following so dedicated that it
will organise between itself for a ‘tour flag’ to travel from the first gig to
the last by fan power alone?
“Yeah, it does actually,” Frank admits. “I feel like I’ve earned the right
to be there. I’m pleased to say that on many levels it has essentially
escaped my control at this point. There is a thing called the ‘Frank Turner
Army’ page on Facebook that’s got loads of people in from all around the
world. They do wonderful stuff, like in terms of fighting touting, making
sure if there are tickets for sale that they sell them to each other, and if
people are worried about going to a gig on their own they also arrange
meet ups and make sure people feel like they’ve got friends at the gig.
The very first time we did the tour flag, I was the ultimate cynic about
it, I was just thinking ‘This isn’t going to work, someone’s going to nick it
on the first day, and that’s the last thing we’re ever gonna see of this tour
flag’ – I was having a bad day. Then, two weeks later at the end of the
tour, there it was, it had made it through all of the shows, and people had
been sewing patches onto it from the cities that we had been in, all this
kind of business. It was nice to be proved wrong.”
Frank’s community spirit (he thinks nothing of rushing from a massive
show to play at his mate’s pub or a local school) recently expanded into
his very own urban festival, taking over his beloved Camden for a mass of
shows including his own Roundhouse headline sets. “It went fantastically
well. Camden is kind of the Mecca of my life and music, to take over the
Chalk Farm Road for four days felt really good. I have toyed with the
idea of having a festival of my own in a field but the level of logistical
organisation and risk involved is crazy. Then Wolf Alice did four nights at
The Forum a couple of years ago and they had different supports every
night. I was stood in the crowd with my friend Cal McCrae who runs the
Old Blue Last and stuff like that. Cal went ‘This is like a mini festival in
North London isn’t it?’ and I went ‘Yes, it is, isn’t it?’ So, then we got in
touch with the Roundhouse and the whole idea came together. We’re
definitely planning on doing it again, possibly not in London next year.
We’re talking about taking it round the world.”
The Road calls him onwards, sunnier all the time. “Last weekend
we played Sleep Is For The Week, my first album, in full on a Saturday
night,” he says, a little wistfully. “On a lot of levels, I feel like that record
was written by and happened to someone else. So, it does feel like a
long journey, it’s my adult life, it feels like an absolute age. Then I stop
and think about my guiding lights, be it Elvis Costello or Springsteen or
whatever, and I go, ‘Oh, actually I’ve barely started’”.
He’s a sleepless soul, Frank Turner, and long may he wander.
