Dear Friends and Loyal Customers, 

As I reflect on the past year, I am proud to say that even as we grow 

and change with the times, Johnson String Instrument continues to 

thrive as a knowledgeable and family-oriented business. My family is 

grateful to our employees who embrace this philosophy every day and 

treat each of our customers as another member of our family. Many 

of the dedicated people working at JSI were themselves customers 

once, and they understand the importance of providing a small shop 

experience to an ever-growing community of player and teachers. 

The love of music is the common thread that binds our customers 

and staff. All our employees, from our sales associates and product 

representatives to our rental specialists, repair staff and fulfillment 

department, work as a team to make sure that you, the customer,

Another source of pride for me and my parents has been the 

continued growth of the Johnson String Project. JSP is a non-profit 

organization dedicated to the development of El Sistema-inspired 

programs within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This year, we 

surpassed our fundraising goal with the help of many loyal supporters 

who attended our JSP Gala in June. I have no doubt that under the 

enthusiastic leadership of my mother, Carol Johnson, the Johnson 

String Project will continue to be a source of much-needed assistance 

for children in many under-serviced communities. 

This year, as we continue to grow, we want to look to the future and 

do even more for our customers. This means more new products,

In the Carriage House Violins workshop, we treat every instrument 

like one of our own. We are committed to maintaining the health and

direction of John Dailey, the workshop is prepared to handle everything

VITTORIO BELLAROSA 

NAPLES 1951 

One of the last great makers of the 

modern Neapolitan school, Vittorio 

Bellarosa (1907–1979) began 

making violins at an early age 

under the guidance of his 

father, Riccardo. After 

studying briefly in 

Mittenwald, Germany, he 

moved to Rome to work 

with Rodolfo Fredi, before 

returning to Naples in the 

late 1920s to embark on a 

long and prolific career. 

This violin is an excellent 

example of Bellarosa’s work. 

PAUL BAILLY PARIS 1902 

French luthier Paul Bailly (1844–1907) studied with Jules Gaillard in 

Mirecourt, France, then with Nicolas François and Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume 

in the latter’s famous workshop. Bailly traveled widely before settling in 

Paris in 1898. An exceptionally skilled and highly prolific maker of primarily 

Stradivari models, his instruments won top awards at prestigious exhibitions. 

His daughter Jenny Bailly was also an accomplished maker and one of the 

few known female luthiers from the early 20th century.

JOSEPH HILL LONDON CIRCA 1770 

The first documented maker of the celebrated Hill dynasty of English luthiers, Joseph Hill (1715–1784) 

was born in Alvechurch, England, and moved to London around 1746. By 1753, he had established 

his own business, where he worked prolifically with his five violin-making sons. His great-grandson, 

William Ebsworth Hill (1817–1895), founded the most acclaimed violin company in London in the 

19th century: W. E. Hill & Sons. W. E. Hill’s own sons would carry the Hill name well into the 

20th century as one of the most important in the history of violin making. Based on 

primarily Stainer and Amati models, the instruments of Joseph Hill are among the 

finest examples of 18th-century English lutherie. 

SHAHRAM & SAEID REZVANI LOS ANGELES 2011 

Born and raised in Tehran, Iran, brothers Shahram and Saeid Rezvani became 

enthusiasts of classical music at a young age. After acquiring college degrees 

in nonmusical subjects, the brothers followed their passion for music and 

woodworking and turned to the craft of violin making. They studied with 

master luthiers Ibrahim Ghanbari Mehr in Tehran and Johann Robach in 

Vienna, Austria, before establishing their own workshop in Tehran. In 2010, 

the Rezvanis relocated their business to the United States, settling in Westlake 

Village, California, where they currently build violins, violas, and cellos and 

provide repair and restoration services. They have made over 500 instruments 

together, which are owned by professional players throughout the world.

GAND & BERNARDEL 

PARIS 1866 

The highly successful, prolific, and 

influential violin-making firm of 

Gand and Bernardel (Gand et 

Bernardel Frères) was founded 

by violin makers Charles Nicolas 

Eugène Gand and the brothers 

Gustave and Ernest Bernardel 

in Paris in 1866. Gand and the 

Bernardel brothers had trained under 

their respective fathers, Charles 

François Gand and Auguste 

Sebastien Philippe Bernardel. 

Through 1892, Gand and Bernardel produced 

a great number of instruments and bows of the 

highest quality, employing some of the finest 

makers of the time. Gustave Bernardel oversaw 

the firm until his retirement in 1901, when he 

sold the shop to two prominent employees, 

Albert Caressa and Henri Français. 

Instruments from Gand and 

Bernardel are extremely wellregarded 

and highly sought 

after by professional musicians. 

PHILIP IHLE LONDON 2016 

Luthier Philip Valentin Ihle studied violin making at the Cremona International 

School of Violin Making before taking a job in repair and restoration at 

Wilhelm Geigenbau in Switzerland. In 2005, he relocated to London, where 

he worked at Florian Leonhard Fine Violins for several years. In 2013, Ihle 

opened his own business, Ihle Violins, in central London, where he currently 

makes and restores violins, violas, and cellos. Ihle won a silver medal for 

workmanship for his copy of the Rouse-Boughton Stradivari violin entered 

into the 2015 Violin Society of America International Competition. He has 

appeared as a guest lecturer at the Association of Swiss Violin and Bow 

Makers and the British Violin Making Association, and his London workshop 

was featured in the July 2014 issue of The Strad.

FRANZ GEISSENHOF VIENNA 1794 – 14 3/4" 

Known as the “Viennese Stradivari,” Austrian violin maker Franz Geissenhof (1753–1821) 

is considered the most important luthier of the early 19th-century Viennese school. Born in 

Füssen, Germany, he moved to Vienna in 1772, where he studied with Johann Georg Thir, 

taking over his teacher’s workshop in 1781. Geissenhof’s instruments followed the style 

of Stainer and Thir up to around the turn of the century, when he began incorporating 

Stradivarian forms and characteristics. This Strad model viola possesses a large, full 

sound despite its small size. 

KEVIN KELLY BOSTON 2016 – 15 7/8" 

Kevin Kelly was born in the Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts. 

He has been a professional musician and has also spent time in his 

early twenties as a woodworker, building custom homes. Violin making 

allowed him to combine many otherwise disparate interests: violin 

music, woodworking, and geometric design. He was a teacher at the 

North Bennet Street School in Boston before opening his own studio 

in 2002. He is currently an advisor at the North Bennet Street School 

and a consultant for the Department of Musical Instruments at the 

Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, as well as the Fine Musical Instrument 

division of Skinner Auctioneers. 


ANTONIO PELIZON 

GORIZIA 1814 – 16" 

Italian violin maker Antonio 

Pelizon (Pellizon) was born in 

1763 in the Gorizia province of 

Italy and died there in 1850. An 

active center of music, carpentry, 

and other artisanry since the early 

18th century, Gorizia became well 

represented for violin making, due 

to the significant work of Pelizon 

and his four sons: Giuseppe 

Francesco (1800–1874), Antonio 

Vincenzo Giuseppe (Antonio II, 

1809–1861), Carlo (1811–1891), 

and Filippo (1817–1897). Pelizon’s 

instruments show the influence 

of Stradivari and Amati models 

incorporated with his own 

personal characteristics. A highly 

regarded maker of the Northern 

Italian school, many of Pelizon’s 

and his sons’ instruments are 

housed in the museum of the 

Gorizia Castle. 

MOES & MOES STAMFORD 2003 – 16 7/8" 

Husband and wife luthiers Wendela and Peter Moes met while attending 

the violin making school in Mittenwald, Germany. After graduating 

with journeyman’s diplomas in 1975, they worked for Hans Weisshaar 

in Los Angeles, California, where they gained expertise in instrument 

restoration and repair. In 1978, they moved to England to work with a 

London dealer, then returned to the United States to establish the Moes 

& Moes workshop in New York City in 1981. After working for many years 

in New York, the Moeses moved to Stamford, Connecticut, where this 

viola was made, before relocating their workshop to its current location 

in Peissenberg, Germany. Moes & Moes instruments are owned by top 

string players worldwide, including Yo-Yo Ma, Hilary Hahn, and Ida 

Kavafian. Their instruments have won numerous awards and are very 

highly sought after.

HIPPOLYTE SILVESTRE PARIS 1848 

French luthier Hippolyte Silvestre was born near Nancy, France, in 1808 and died in 

Sommerviller in 1879. He apprenticed at the Blaise workshop in Mirecourt before moving 

to Paris around 1827 to study at Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume’s famous atelier. In 1831, 

Silvestre joined his brother Pierre (1801–1859) in Lyon to form Silvestre Frères, a 

highly successful business that produced some of the finest French instruments of the 

mid-19th century. Silvestre left the firm and moved to Sommerviller after 1848, the year 

this cello was made. After Pierre's death in 1859, he returned to the Silvestre workshop 

in Lyon to work with his nephew Hippolyte Chrétien Silvestre (1845–1913) for several 

years, before retiring in 1865. Silvestre’s instruments, based on Cremonese models, 

are very highly regarded.

ERNST REINHOLD SCHMIDT MARKNEUKIRCHEN CIRCA 1920 

German violin maker Ernst Reinhold Schmidt (1857–1928) was 

born in Markneukirchen, Germany, where he apprenticed as a 

violin maker, before moving to Leipzig to work for the Bausch and 

Hammig workshop. After working for renowned maker and restorer 

August Riechers in Berlin, Schmidt returned to Markneukirchen 

to open his own business, E. R. Schmidt & Company, in 1884. The 

Schmidt workshop grew to become one of the most successful in 

Markneukirchen in the early 1900s. E. R. Schmidt’s instruments won 

gold medals at the World’s Fairs of Vienna in 1892 and Leipzig of 1913. 

We believe this cello was made in the Schmidt workshop circa 1920.

GRUBAUGH AND SEIFERT 

PETALUMA 2016 

Joseph Grubaugh (b. 1950) and Sigrun Seifert 

(b. 1954) have been working partners for more 

than 35 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. 

Sigrun studied at the Mittenwald School of 

Violin Making, and Joseph studied with Albert 

C. Muller. The couple met in Los Angeles while 

working at Hans Weisshaar’s workshop, before 

moving to San Francisco to establish their own 

business. Grubaugh & Seifert instruments 

have won multiple awards for tone and 

workmanship in international competitions. 

Both have presided as judges at the Violin 

Society of America and other international 

competitions and are sought after for 

their restoration expertise on important 

antique instruments. Grubaugh & Seifert 

instruments are owned by leading 

players in major orchestras 

throughout the world. 

LAWRENCE WILKE CLINTON 2011 

Lawrence Wilke’s interest in musical instruments began when he 

started playing cello at 8 years old. He studied cello with Marijane Carr 

Seigal of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, then with William Klenz at SUNY 

Binghamton. While also studying cello, Wilke began an apprenticeship as 

a violin maker at the age of 16 with his uncle, master violin maker David 

Caron. He also trained in bow making and repair with Philip Krause, 

before moving to Taynton, England, in 1986 to work for Andrew Dipper in 

instrument restoration. In 1988, Wilke opened his own studio in Clinton, 

Connecticut, where he currently builds violins and violas and specializes 

in cello making.

developed over many years of collaboration between violin makers Jay Ifshin and Haide

JAMES TUBBS 

English bow maker James Tubbs 

was born in London in 1835 and 

died there in 1921. One of the 

most important bow makers 

in history. James trained and 

worked with his father, William, 

until 1858, when he went to 

work for W. E. Hill & Sons. In 

1864, he established his own 

business, where he would 

develop his own bow model 

based on those of François 

Tourte. He was later appointed 

bow maker to the court of the 

Duke of Edinburgh. Bows by 

James Tubbs are highly sought 

after by professional players 

and collectors. 

JOSEPH ALFRED LAMY 

Known as “Lamy père,” French 

archetier Joseph Alfred Lamy 

(1850–1919) was one of the 

most important French bow 

makers in history. Born in 

Mirecourt, he apprenticed there 

with Claude Charles Nicolas 

Husson, then worked for the 

instrument company run by 

Pierre Louis Gautrot. In 1876, 

Lamy moved to Paris to work 

as François Nicolas Voirin’s 

assistant, establishing his own 

business after Voirin’s death in 

1885. He was very influential 

among succeeding French 

bow makers, including his 

student Eugène Sartory. His 

bows are extremely highly 

regarded and sought after 

by professional players. 

SAMUEL ALLEN FOR 

W.E. HILL & SONS 

Samuel Allen (1838–ca. 1914) 

is regarded as one of the finest 

and most influential English bow 

makers of the late 19th century. 

One of the first bow makers to 

be hired at the renowned W. E. 

Hill & Sons workshop in London, 

Allen crafted exceptional bows 

based on various French models, 

particularly François Tourte, and 

set the high standard of bow 

making that the Hill company 

became known for. 

ÉMILE AUGUST OUCHARD 

Celebrated French bow maker 

Émile Auguste Ouchard was 

born in Mirecourt in 1900 and 

died in Paris in 1969. He studied 

with his father, Émile François 

Ouchard (1872–1951), at the 

famous Cuniot-Hury atelier in 

Mirecourt. In 1923, the Ouchards 

opened their own shop, which 

was highly productive for many 

years. In 1937, Émile August 

moved to Paris to establish his 

own business, then to the United 

States in 1946. He made annual 

trips to Paris, returning there 

for good in 1960. Ouchard’s 

bows are in high demand among 

professional players.

LOUIS GILLET 

French bow maker Louis Henri 

Gillet (1891–1970) apprenticed 

under August Barbé in 

Mirecourt, before going to work 

for the Jérome Thibouville-Lamy 

company. After serving in World 

War I, Gillet worked for the 

Laberte-Humbert Frères firm, 

then moved to Dijon in the 

1920s to establish his own 

workshop. In 1934, Gillet 

succeeded Jules Fétique as 

Eugene Sartory’s assistant in 

Paris for over a decade. After 

Sartory’s death in 1946, Gillet 

worked for Sartory’s son-in-law, 

violin maker Georges Dupuy, for 

a short time, during which this 

viola bow was made. 

PIERRE-YVES FUCHS 

Swiss bow maker Pierre-Yves 

Fuchs is one of the most 

celebrated bow makers working 

today. He studied with Stéphane 

Thomachot, Gilles Duhaut, 

Pierre Guillaume, and Benoit 

Rolland and established his own 

workshop in 1997. His bows 

are in high demand among 

professional players worldwide 

and have won numerous awards 

at international competitions. In 

the Violin Society of America 

competition of 2004, Fuchs 

received the unprecedented 

honor of winning four Gold 

Medals, earning him the title 

of “Hors Concours.” His bowmaking 

style is inspired by 

Charles Peccatte, Nicolas Rémy 

Maire, and Étienne Pajeot. 

EMMANUEL BÉGIN 

Canadian bow maker Emmanuel 

Bégin began his training at the 

age of 14 with his father, Louis 

Bégin, in Montréal. He moved 

to Lille, France, to work with 

Yannick Le Canu before 

returning to Montréal to open 

his own workshop. He has won 

several recognitions from the 

Violin Society of America

Roger François Lotte (1922– 

1989) descended from a family 

of French violin and bow 

makers: his grandfather Georges 

worked for Jean-Baptiste 

Vuillaume and Honoré Derazey, 

and his father, François, 

apprenticed in the Bazin 

workshop and ran a successful 

atelier in Paris. Lotte took over 

the business in 1960, becoming 

a prolific maker of bows for 

prominent violin dealers.

EUGÈNE SARTORY 

Today, Eugène Nicolas Sartory 

(1871–1946) is generally 

regarded as one of the finest 

bow makers of the first half of 

the 20th century. Born in 

Mirecourt, he studied bow 

making with his father, Joseph 

Eustache Sartory (1839–1902), 

before moving to Paris to work 

for Charles Peccatte and 

Alfred Lamy. In 1889, Sartory 

established his own workshop, 

where he would experiment 

with innovative designs to 

achieve sturdier, stronger bows 

than those of his predecessors. 

Known for their stability and 

superb handling, bows by 

Sartory are extremely sought 

after by professional players. 

JEAN “GRAND” ADAM 

Jean “Grand” Adam (1823– 

1869) is one of the most 

distinctive and revered French 

makers of the 19th century. 

Continuing the tradition of bow 

making from his grandfather 

Jean Adam (fl. c. 1790–1820) 

and father, Jean Dominique 

(1795–1864), “Grand” Adam 

moved from Mirecourt to Paris 

to work at Jean Baptiste 

Vuillaume’s famous workshop in 

1842. Adam returned to 

Mirecourt in 1853, where he 

continued to build bows for 

Vuillaume until his death. The 

frog and button of the cello bow 

offered here were made by 

Joseph Henry, a colleague who 

also worked for Vuillaume. 

PIERRE-YVES FUCHS 

Swiss bow maker Pierre-Yves 

Fuchs is one of the most 

celebrated bow makers working 

today. He studied with Stéphane 

Thomachot, Gilles Duhaut, 

Pierre Guillaume, and Benoit 

Rolland and established his own 

workshop in 1997. His bows are 

in high demand among 

professional players worldwide 

and have won numerous awards 

at international competitions. In 

the Violin Society of America 

competition of 2004, Fuchs 

received the unprecedented 

honor of winning four Gold 

Medals: one for each of his 

violin, viola, cello, and bass 

bows, earning him the title of 

“Hors Concours.” His bow 

making style is inspired by 

Peccatte, Maire, and Pajeot. 

GEORGES TEPHO 

World-renowned French bow 

maker Georges Tepho studied 

with Bernard Ouchard and Roger 

Lotte at the Mittenwald School 

of Violin and Bow Making. He 

has participated in expositions 

in Paris, Frankfurt, and Tokyo, 

as well as in numerous 

competitions, where his bows 

have won numerous awards. He 

currently works at his shop in 

Quimper, France, perfecting his 

craft and mentoring up-andcoming

Rental Bows: All Advanced and Master rental 

outfits come with a carbon fiber bow, which

stability, and durability. The Glasser fiberglass 

bow that comes with Standard rental outfits

Rental Equity Program: All JSI rental

of the first year of rental fees plus 20%

Consistently praised by teachers and players for over 40 years, the JSI stringed instrument 

rental program has earned a reputation as one of the best in the country. Each luthier in our 

dedicated Rental Workshop is highly trained in stringed instrument repair and setup, and 

all of our rental instruments are set up beyond National Association for Music Education 

(NAfME) standards to meet our own rigorous requirements for quality, sound, and playability. 

Setup: Our skilled luthiers set up every rental instrument with tone and player comfort in 

mind. The string height, fingerboard scoop, and bridge placement are all very important to the 

comfort, playability, and intonation of stringed instruments. Attention to these details sets JSI 

rentals apart from others—we know that a beginning student has a better chance of learning 

well on an instrument that is set up to professional specifications, no matter the size or the 

grade of the instrument. 

Tone Quality: The choice of strings and placement of the soundpost and bridge all have a vast 

influence on a string instrument’s tone quality. Every JSI rental instrument is strung with the highquality 

strings we’ve matched to it and is carefully adjusted to maximize tone. 

Our staff are always ready to find the right 

instrument for every student! 

Repairs: Our staff can help you learn how to best protect and care for your delicate rental 

instrument. We encourage renters to treat their instruments, bows, and cases with care. However, 

should an accident occur, your rental is covered by our comprehensive insurance policy. Normal 

wear and tear, such as warped bridges and bow rehairs, is likewise covered. Simply return the 

instrument or bow to us and exchange it for another. 

Hand-Selected Instruments: We take tremendous pride in the level of attention we pay to each 

instrument. Our Workshop manager travels to the Eastman factory in Beijing twice a year to 

personally inspect potential rental instruments. Each instrument we purchase meets our exacting 

standards and is free of any defects, and, after it’s set up in our own shop, each instrument is 

inspected and played by our Rental Workshop manager before being rented. Ensuring that both 

the player and the instrument are able to perform at their best is our top priority.

SUZUKI METHOD 

The “mother-tongue” approach to learning: listening, repetition, 

and encouragement. 

Dr. Suzuki’s method of learning is based on his belief that “Musical 

ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. 

Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability, just as all 

children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential
