CARLINHOS BROWN
LINCOLN CENTER - David Geffen Hall– 8 PM
“ I b e l i e v e that my music will cross borders, because
it is a music open to the world, open to everyone”
—Carlinhos Brown.
CONCERT
JULY
15
Brazilian music star Carlinhos Brown returns to Lincoln
Center Festival for another joyous global party.
Coming of age just a generation after Caetano Veloso
and Gilberto Gil, Brown is one of today’s most
prominent torchbearers of the Bahian sound. With
30 of his songs having topped the Brazilian charts,
Brown embraces carnaval anthems, samba-funk
pop, ballads, reggae, rock, and hip-hop. His famously
electrifying stage show features virtuosic percussion,
full band, colorful costumes, and non-stop
dance that are guaranteed to get audiences on
their feet. Deeply committed to improving lives in
his hometown, his artistry also glows with generosity,
creating ecstatic moments of community and
celebration wherever he goes.
“Ajayô” is a greeting used in the afoxé "sons of
gandhy". Afoxé, also called street candomblé, is a
street procession that goes out during the carnival.
It is an Afro-Brazilian manifestation with roots in
the Yoruba people. Generally, its members are
linked to a candomblé terreiro. The word "Ajayô"
comes from African mythology and is a greeting to
an orixá, creator of man according to mythology.
Such figures are worshiped in candomblé. Most of
these African mythological figures have bad qualities,
like Ogum, who was a grumpy warrior and
liked to taste dogs. The mythology says that, when
contradicted, it killed and destroyed. So be very
careful about what we let into our house.
ROMERO LUBAMBO
In 1985, Romero Lubambo came to
the United States, and brought with
him a new sound in Brazilian jazz
guitar.
Romero's guitar playing unites the
styles and rhythms of his native Brazilian
musical heritage with his fluency
in the American jazz tradition
to form a distinctive new sound.
From the cool, sophisticated
rhythms of his native Brazil to hard
bop, Romero is a guitarist who's
comfortable in any musical setting.
He is an uncommonly gifted soloist
and musical improviser with a
steady stream of unpredictably creative
musical thoughts and the virtuosity
to deliver them.
Lubambo has performed and recorded
with many outstanding
artists, including Dianne Reeves,
Michael Brecker, Yo-Yo Ma, Kathleen
Battle, Diana Krall, Herbie
Mann, Wynton Marsalis, Gal Costa,
Kurt Elling, Kenny Barron, Luciana
Souza, Cyro Baptista, Sergio and
Odair Assad, Ivan Lins, Grover
Washington Jr., Vernon Reid, Flora
Purim and Airto, Paquito D'Rivera,
Harry Belafonte, Larry Coryell, Gato
Barbieri, Leny Andrade, James
Carter, Paula Robison, Dave Weckl,
Jason Miles, and Cesar Camargo
Mariano... among many others.
Now in his fourth decade as a pillar
of the New York scene, Romero
Lubambo's guitar playing unites the
styles and rhythms of his native Brazilian
musical heritage with fluency
in the American jazz tradition to
form a distinctive new sound.
NEW CD RELEASE
JAZZ STANDARD 7:30 & 9:30 PM
In his new CD, the recording features
Lubambo mainly on acoustic
nylon string guitar, though he does
record a couple of pieces with his
solid body Les Paul, an instrument
he keeps in Brazil to play for his
more electric guitar savvy fans.
The music is a mixture of Brazilian
music, like Bossa Nova and Forró,
and Jazz with a little Blues mixed in.
The program begins with accordion
legend
Dominguinhos’s “Gostoso
Demais,” an incredibly popular song
in Brazil that the trio plays in a hazily
insistent manner.
The trio shows its dexterity on Mauricio
Einhorn and Durval Ferreira’s
“Estamos Aí,” a fun piece from the
bossa nova era that’s title means
“ready for anything.” “Contrato De
Separação” is a Dominguinhos composition
about divorce and is appropriately
melancholy. The electric
guitar is in full swing on Lubambo’s
“New Slash Blues,” a grooving piece
showing Lubambo’s unfiltered side.
Paquito In Bremen” is Lubambo’s
moving tribute to friend and woodwind
maestro Paquito D’Rivera, revisited
here in an expanded trio
setting. Lubambo’s “P’Ro Flavio (For
My Father)” is a spirited piece
written in the Baião style of north
CONCERT
JULY
25
eastern Brazil for the guitarist’s super
supportive father.
The lovely “Nature’s Beauty” was
written by Lubambo and his wife,
Pamela Driggs, for their then three
year-old daughter. The electric guitar
is back on the second line flavored
“Dipper Mouth,” a tune from
the pen of Lubambo’s “American
father,” Herbie Mann.
“Luisa” is another moving lilting
tribute to Lubambo’s daughter that
he wrote more recently. Lubambo
and Paulo Cesar Pinheiro’s dedication
to Brazilian legend João Donato,
“For Donato,” utilizes a Brazilian
meets Latin rhythm that the pianist
has used throughout his storied career.
The album concludes with another
touching ballad entitled “Song
For Kaya,” which the guitarist wrote
many years ago while on tour with
Harry Belafonte.
Guitarist Romero Lubambo regularly
makes music that moves listeners
with its soul and effervescence.
Thus, his meeting with two incredible
São Paulo based musicians, Thiago
Rabello and Sidiel Vieira, on their
new recording Sampa is inspiring
and exciting.
BRAZILIAN JAZZ
Brazilian Jazz is a style of music born from the
fusion between American jazz improvisation and
Brazilian rhythms.
Well-known Brazilian music
styles such as samba, choro,
and American jazz all share
the same roots, a mix of African
rhythms and European
harmonies.
Ben Ratliff journalist, music
critic and author of “The
New York Times Essential
Library: Jazz: A Critic’s
Guide to the 100 Most Important
Recordings”(2002), makes
note of this significance referring
to the "lilting New
Orleans street rhythm that
has ties to Brazilian samba
school drumming" in Chapter
One - The Original Dixieland
Jazz Band "The Creators
of Jazz".
But it was not until the Bossa
Nova period in the 1960s
that the fusion of this music
began to take a new transnational
style and gain popularity
worldwide.
"The Girl From Ipanema”
(Antonio Carlos Jobim
and Vinicius de Moraes)
went on to "become the
second-most recorded popular
song in history, behind
“Yesterday."
Since then the list of artists
that have contributed to
this genre of fascinating
harmonies, melodies and
rhythms have only grown.
They include João Gilberto,
Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock,
Gerry Mulligan, Claudio
Roditi, Stan Getz, Sergio
Mendes, Frank Sinatra, Tony
Bennett, Diana Krall,
Sting, and many others.
1922—Year of Brazil’s Independence Centenary,
HISTORY
The week of modern art was an exhibition organized by avant-garde
artists that happened in the city of São Paulo and influenced in the
formation of a new concept of Brazilian art and consequently in the
teaching of arts in the schools. Between 1900 and 1929, Europe went
through a period of cultural effervescence, with artistic manifestations
that broke traditional concepts such as German expressionism, Cubism,
abstract painting, Dadaism and surrealism. Many Brazilian painters
traveled in order to know new forms of expression and, upon returning
to Brazil, brought these new aesthetic conceptions. The fuse
for the explosion of modernism was the return of Anita Malfatti from
the United States after studying painting. Upon her return, persuaded
by the insistence of friends, she put on an exhibition
that was heavily criticized by respected art critics, among
them Monteiro Lobato of the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper.
The article caused much controversy, which led to the consolidation
of a group of individuals interested in producing innovative art. In the
article called "Paranoia or Mystification", Lobato is relentless. The
following is an excerpt:
There are two kinds of artists. A composite of those who normally see
things and consequently make pure art, guarding the eternal rhythms
of life, and adopted for the realization of the aesthetic emotions, the
classic processes of the great masters. ... The other species is formed
by those who abnormally see nature and interpret it in the light of
ephemeral theories, under the hint of rebellious schools, arising here
and there like boils of excessive culture. (...) Shooting stars, shine for
an instant, most often in the light of scandal, and soon fall into the
darkness of oblivion. (...)
These considerations are brought about by Mrs. Malfatti's exposition,
where there are marked trends for a forced aesthetic attitude towards
the extravagances of Picasso and company. This artist has a vigorous
talent, out of the ordinary. A few times, through a twisted work for
misdirection, one notices so many and so precious latent qualities. (...)
However, seduced by the theories of what she calls modern art, ... she
puts all her talent at the service of a new kind of caricature. (...) As a
result, from February 13 to 17, 1922, the Week of Modern Art was
held at the Municipal Theater of São Paulo, in which artists defended
freedom and the incorporation of the modern forms of expression of
the "foreigner" - not for Copy them, but to re-create them in their
own way.
On this, Mário de Andrade would affirm in 1928 that "the cultural
devouring of imported techniques to re-elaborate them with autonomy,
converting them into export product". Also, the authentic Brazilian
artistic expression should contain elements of the different
"brasis": the rural and the urban, the old and the modern, etc. For the
people of Brazil, 1922 was a landmark year. It marked a full century of
independence from Portugal – and it was also the year that put Brazilian
art on the international map. An idea grew up from the artists’
studios of São Paolo: to dedicate a week to modern art, to run alongside
the government-organised centenary celebrations. For seven
days, artists constructed, deconstructed, performed, sculpted, gave
lectures, read poetry and created some of the most avant-garde
works ever seen in Brazil.
Di Cavalcanti
The emphasis of the week was modernism – lectures about modern
art were given, new styles of music were played and difficult poems
were read aloud. Among the works showcased at the Modern Art
Week was poetry by Mario de Andrade, controversial art nouveau
paintings by Di Cavalcanti (an artist associated with the English decadence
movement and Oscar Wilde) and sculptures by Victor
Brecheret. These were rounded, strong monumental figures with
an emphasis on naturalism and anatomy – figures that seemed too
human and too sexual to a world as yet unaccustomed to 'modern'
art.
Today the Semana de Arte Moderna of 1922 is recognized as a pivotal
moment in the development of modern art. At the time, however,
it was greeted with expressions of anger, horror, fear or derision.
There were stories of performers being pelted with missiles by
shocked audiences, and critics wrote angrily about works they
couldn’t comprehend.
MUSIC
"The informally named 'Clube da Esquina' was
an absolute high point of one of the greatest
moments of Brazil's
fertile popular music scene, one of the best
anywhere in the world. To hear these gems
reinterpreted by Vanessa Falabella amply
demonstrates two things first and foremost:
the continuing relevance of the music and what
interpreter. An ideal match. Vanessa makes
these songs her own. And then some."
RISING TALENT
The Tap dance over Brazilian Music
F
elipe Galganni, tap dancer, teacher, and choreographer,
is known for his unique style and versatility
in blending the American art form of tap dance with
his Brazilian roots. Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, Felipe
began his dance training in 1996 at the age of 9. He
started out taking a jazz dance classes after school, but at
age 15, Felipe discovered tap and he hasn’t stopped tapping
since . Within a year of his first encounter with tap,
Felipe began teaching the dance. It was during this time
that Felipe performed as a soloist and ensemble member in
his first musical, the Maya-directed show, entitled “O Musical
dos Musicais” (The Musical of the Musicals). Felipe reunited
with Maya in 2007, when he acted in and choreographed
the musical: “Garota Glamour” (Glamour Girl).
Felipe’s affair with musical theater continued in 2009, when
he was commissioned by writer/director Hudson Gauber to
choreograph and perform several tap numbers for the São
Paulo premiere of the musical “Rock Show” in Brazil, Felipe
continued to explore tap dance, performance and choreography,
as he honed his teaching skills.
In 2010, Felipe participated in a weeklong intensive in Rio
taught by Heather Cornell (Manhattan Tap), and was exposed
for the first time, to the idea of using tap as an instrument,
and looking at the dance as music. It’s an approach
that takes into account the tonality of every sound,
of every dancer, each as a member of the band or orchestra
completing the composition. This experience solidified Felipe’s
decision to pursue tap dance as a profession.
JULY 7, 2017 | FIRST EDITION
DANCE
That summer Felipe moved to New York City to further
his tap education. He continued his studies with Ms. Cornell,
a teacher he still counts as one of his mentors, and was
soon introduced to his now long-time collaborator and
friend Chikako Iwahori. It was through Ms. Iwahori, that he
met the various teachers, choreographers and dancers
within the New York tap community. Since making the
move to New York Felipe has had the honor of dancing,
studying and performing with such great names as Tony
Waag, Max Pollak (RumbaTap), Lynn Schwab and Ray Hesselink,
in addition to Ms. Cornell and Ms. Iwahori.
Music Foundation the number one school and entertainment
institution for Brazilian music in New York
City”.
By Madalena Sousa, Chief Executive Officer
For the past 15 years, he has been co-artistic director
and pianist for the Ensemble for the Romantic Century,
a multimedia ensemble that combines music, theater
and video, with more than 40 different productions in its
repertoire.
As a chamber musician Mr. Barros has performed with
the American String Quartet, Enso String Quartet, Quartetto
di Venezia, Biava String Quartet, Esher String
Quartet, and the St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble.
As a champion of Brazilian Music, he won the
“Discovery Award” from the Diapason magazine in
France for his recordings of the 6 Piano Concertos of
Camargo Guarnieri with the Warsaw Philharmonic under
American conductor Thomas Conlin.
He is currently recording all of Camargo Guarnieri’s solo
piano works in six volumes. He will be performing in the
upcoming production Van Gogh’s Year at the Off-
Broadway Signature Theater on 42nd Street, running
from August 6 through September 10.
————————————————————————-
M
ax Barros has won wide acclaim as one of
South America's foremost pianists. Born in
California and raised in Brazil, Mr. Barros was
presented with the "Soloist of the Year"
Award (1985) by the São Paulo Music Critics Association.
The New York Times has praised Mr. Barros for his
“rapturous” performance of Rachmaninoff’s music, and
Opera Today remarked, “Mr. Barros… made the piano
drip with beauty and elegance, with an incomparable
grace in his legato.
Mr. Barros is the founder and president of Ponteio Music
Publishing, Inc, a company devoted to the publication
and dissemination of Brazilian classical music.
His dedication to Brazilian music led him to meet Madalena
Sousa, the President and Chief Executive Officer
of the Brazilian Music Foundation, also a dedicated
and enthusiast promoter of Brazilian music. As a
result, he was just appointed as Artistic Director of
the classical music department of BMF. Mr. Barros is a
IMPORTANT DATES IN JULY
Brazilian Music History
July 14th 1945 the Brazilian Academy of Music is founded by Heitor
Villa-Lobos. The non-profit honor society was composed of forty
scholars with outstanding achievements in music composition,
interpretation, and musicology. The legendary carioca
composer left half of his copyright profits to the Academy in his
will, so that it may continue to preserve and promote Brazilian
music in the future. This year marks the 72nd anniversary of ABM.
July 1968 - Tropicalia ou Panis et Circencis is released by
Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Nara Leão,
Os Mutantes, and Tom Ze. The album formed the basis for the
musical component of the Tropicalia movement, in which
Brazilian vanguard artists incorporated foreign styles and ideas
into Brazilian culture. This period gave birth to some of the
most innovative Brazilian artists, musicians, philosophers, and
writers of the 20th century.
July 7th 1990 - Cazuza, frontman and songwriter
of Rock band Barao Vermelho, and one of the
most controversial and acclaimed figures of
Brazilian music dies. After following a massively
successful solo career, coming to be known as
“the poet of Rock”,
Cazuza was diagnosed HIV positive in 1987. He
would still go on to release his masterpiece
Ideologia in 1988 and go public about his condition
and the dangers of HIV/AIDS before succumbing
to the disease a year later.
