DESERT DENTAL
ALTERNATIVES
Bruno Lemay, DMD
Do you think that dental cavities are
problems only for children?
It is a general belief that cavities are for
kids only. But in fact, cavities affect all
ages!
The reason why cavities are more
prevalent in children is mainly the fact
that they tend to eat more sugar and
have poor hygiene habits. However, when
looking at the cause of decay, which
is basically plaque with the presence
of sugar, it is easy to understand that
cavities can happen at any age even if
your mouth is full of crowns.
Of course there are some people who
have teeth that are softer then others and
are easier to decay but that affects only
1% of the population. Basically any diet
rich in sugar will increase your chance of
decay. Soft drinks, candies and anything
sweet will have a potency to create decay
in the presence of dental plaque. Of
course in order to create
Dr.
Bruno
LEMAY
decay there has to be the bacteria
that will transfer the sugar into acid to
decalcify the tooth. It is called dental
plaque and it forms very quick after
eating. The better hygiene a person
has, the less they will have decay. It
takes both sugar and plaque to decay
a tooth. The more you brush and
floss, the more plaque removed and
the less risk of decay.
Additionally, elderly patients also
tend to have more decay. It is more
obvious with elderly patients who are
loosing their dexterity, and in general
they tend to eat more sweets more
often, and not brush as often.
There is also another component
that needs to be explained here. In
the mouth there are several types
of bacteria. Some are responsible
for gum disease and some are
responsible for decay. Some people
may have the best hygiene and still
have gum disease and some who
have the worst hygiene may not
suffer from gum disease at all. This
is because they do not have the
bacteria responsible for gum disease.
Same thing for decay. Some people
will be more susceptible to decay
then others even if they eat just a
little sugar and have decent dental
760- 324-4450
www.LemayDental.com
www.facebook.com/DesertDentalAlternatives
hygiene. That is because they have that
kind of bacteria in their mouth in a higher
rate then another person. But that is not
a reasonable excuse. More brushing
and plaque control with a topical fluoride
application daily, preferably with a special
personal tray made at the dental office
will help.
Very rarely a person will suffer from gum
disease and a high rate of decay. It is
generally one or the other. If someone
has a high rate of decay,in general they
will not suffer from gum disease like
bone loss, periodontal pockets and tooth
mobility.
It is a proven fact though, that the better
the dental hygiene you have and the
better your diet is in terms of limiting
sugar intake, the healthier your gums and
teeth will be.
So, it is not true that decay affect only
kids. As long as you have one tooth in
your mouth you are subject to get decay
if you leave dental plaque on it and eat
sugar!
The best way to prevent that is to have
good dental hygiene at home and
brushing after any sugar intake, and to
visit your dentist 2 to 3 times a year.
Levvy: Where did you grow up?
by Levvy Carriker
Jason: I grew up in Norwalk and Downey
California, raised primarily by my grandparents.
LC: As a child what was your TV show
and character?
LIVEMAGAZINETV
JB: I had two shows I loved and adored
(still do) I Love Lucy and Wonder Woman.
LC: I had lots of TV pro wrestlers that
I idolized and would pretend to be them
for fun or play.. Do you have anyone who
influenced you?
JB: As a child of the 80’s I was addicted to
G.L.O.W. (the gorgeous ladies of wrestling)
I’m so happy to see the story of its inception
brought to life again through the new Netflix
series of the same name. I hope it sparks a
revival of the show itself too.
LC: What is home life like? Do you have
a husband or pet? What is your favorite
thing to do at home?
JB: I have a very full home life. I live with
my husband of 15 years, my handicapped
sister in law that we care for and my cousin
who moved here from Oregon with us to
help care for my mother as she is currently
going through Parkinson’s and cancer
treatments.
LC: : You lived in Seattle for a while. What
do you feel was the most valuable ‘life
lesson’ you got there?
JB: The best lesson I learned from living
in Seattle is that everyone should get out
and experience different parts of the country
and the world whenever possible. The
climate is different, the people are different,
even the way people look at things in
life is different. It really opens up your mind
and your way of thinking to see things in
new and different ways.
LC: Had heard of you before in Riverside. What
were the shows like? And who did you work with?
JB: When I first started out in Riverside
at VIP Nightclub in the late 90’s, drag was
something you took seriously. But it was just
so much fun. There was no need for social
media “fame”. Just doing your best on stage
and getting your joy through your performance
while giving the audience their’s.
LC: What brings you to Palm Springs?
JB:: Palm Springs has such a unique,
colorful and fun style. It’s a draw to anyone
RUSTY
WATERS
who has been here at least once. You get
a cosmopolitan air and small town friendliness
all in one place. You can’t find that
anywhere else.
LC: Jennifer Seymour and staff are some
of the hardest working business owners and
crew. With a packed house on the weekends
and great local weekday happy hours, Hunters
is the place to be. Tell us about your two
shows you now have at HUNTERS.
JB:: Thank you so much for asking! I’m very
excited for our weekly events at Hunters!
Jennifer is an amazing person to work and
for and with. She’s one smart cookie and
runs a fabulous place for people to come
and party! Wednesdays from 6-8pm we
have Drag Me To Bingo, a fun funny and
irreverent take on classic bingo. We give
away great prizes, have some fabulous drag
performances and generally laugh together
for a good two hours straight! It’s a hoot!
Sundays at 9:30pm we put on a full drag revue
called Risqué. Complete with production
numbers, some of the leading drag entertainers
from all over Southern California and a
few RuPauls Drag Race alumni every once in
while, it has really brought the people out of
the woodwork to enjoy this show every week.
So come early to get a good seat!
You can also find me there hostessing
the party most weekends on Friday and
Saturday nights. So come out and say
hi if you see me!
LC: Your stage name is fun and memorable.
How did you decide on the stage
name of Rusty Waters?
JB: The first night I was ever put in drag
by Palm Springs legend Tommi Rose I was
given the name Rusty Waters as an homage
to the timeless Rusty Warren. If you
don’t know who she is I highly recommend
looking her up. She’s hilarious and reminds
me of Bette Midler before Bette Midler. With
her double entendre, comedic timing and
vampy songs, it’s kind of perfect I was given
that name as I have grown into a similar
style of performance. Lots of funny and a bit
of beauty thrown in for good measure.
LC: The Staff and patrons have already
fallen in love with you. As your Palm
Springs audience grows and you meet
more of the locals, what advice would you
give to emerging local talent?
JB: The best advice I could give new talent
coming onto the scene is to take your time
and get to know the people in the audience.
We have some amazing individuals in the
area and you want to hear their stories just
as much as you want yours to be heard.
Secondly, practice practice practice! Whether
it’s working on performance at home in
front of a mirror or finding the best ways to
paint your mug, spend the time perfecting
your gift. Your audience deserves it!
LC: : If you could have one dream come
true and not a worldly dream like peace on
earth but a dream that Rusty wants to see
happen for Rusty?
JB: My pie in the sky dream? I want to
make enough money to one day open
my own place. A place much like the club
in the movie The Birdcage. Someplace
utterly fabulous where queens can really
give amazing performances. Because
every detail is built around that goal. And
of course I get to be the “Starina” popping
in and being dramatic and funny too!

THE YOUNGEST STAR ON THE WALK in Palm
Springs was honored with the Golden Palm Award to
celebrate her exemplary career and achievements as
a TV personality, journalist and humanitarian.
BIANCA RAE is honored with STAR #416.
It was another heavenly Palm Springs day at
149 South Palm Canyon Drive next to the Sonny
Bono bronze statue on June 2. Joining Bianca
Rae to help celebrate her special day, were star
ceremony speakers, tourists, attractive fellow news
broadcasters, political notables, and past star
recipients.
The Palm Springs Walk of Stars has been honoring
icons and legendary individuals, celebrities,
community supporters and humanitarians, decorated
military and Presidents, pioneers and tribal elders,
sports figures.
The sun was setting and reflecting upon the beautiful
San Jacinto Mountains. It glowed on the podium for
this prestigious occasion. Chairs lining the sidewalk
were filled with those in anticipation of the curbside
arrival of the newest and youngest star to step onto
the red carpet.
Speakers cued up to share memories and fun stories
of Bianca Rae. Rebecca Johnson, the News Director
at KESQ Channel 3, shared stories of Bianca’s
achievements, both career and personal. The
Assistant News Director who hired Bianca Rae, Tim
Kiley, spoke of her contribution of glamour and spirit
she brings to KESQ, the leading morning news desk.
Diane Valdez and Bea Smith gave heart-felt stories of
her Bianca Rae Foundation and its mission of “giving
a voice for the voiceless”; animals and children.
Bianca’s family members and best friend, Michele
Mendez, shared memories of Bianca’s inspirational
life as a young lady growing up in Chicago.
As the City of Palm Springs supports the star
program, the distinguished City Councilman and
friend of Bianca’s, JR Roberts, presented the
City Proclamation and declared June 2, 2017, as
Bianca Rae Day.
photos: Dimitri Halkidis
Kathleen Bennett, the Secretary of The Palm Springs
Walk of Stars, presented Bianca with the star replica,
flowers, and a personal star pin on behalf of the board
of directors of the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
The highlight of the day was Bianca’s speech and her
expression of gratitude for this great honor. She named
those who were instrumental in the success of The
Bianca Rae Foundation and supported her mission
of making life better for children and animals. Funny
stories and “thank you shout-outs” followed and were
enjoyed by all. The new granite star on the sidewalk will
shine brightly to be enjoyed by locals, Historical Society
walking tours, and tourists who share their “selfies”
around the world on Facebook.
Making the star official was President of the Palm
Springs Walk of Stars, Bob Alexander, with its unveiling.
Cheers, cameras flashes, and many smart-phone photo
ops made it a perfect day to remember.

Born Diana, princess of the Amazons, she had an innate urge
to fight. She was born to be a true and unbeatable warrior on a
remote island in the sea. When an American pilot crashes on the
paradise island he becomes aquainted with Diana. The pilot tells
of an emerging war outside the island that will spread all over
the world. Diana becames self aware and realizes she has the
power to re-shape history. Her own mother warns her that if she
leaves to fight the fight she may never come home.
But this is Diana.
The handsome pilot and Diana travel to the western world where
she settles in a bit with some fashions of the day and realizes,
“how can a woman fight in this?” It doesn’t take long and the
fight is on. The epic battle rages on and Diana knocks the guys
out in quite a few more ways than one. The scenery is brillant.
And the galloping of horses across yellow flowered fields above
an ocean cliff.... I mean if you are going into battle, pick your
locations well!
Another amazing film for your summer pleasure by director, Patty
Jenkins. Gal Gadot certainly plays the part and Chris Pine and
Robin Wright were great too.
From the director
Christopher Nolan
400,000 soldiers are trapped
seaside where survival is the
only victory. It is a story of
these soldiers who can’t get
home. So home came to get
them! In this epic battle even
the Red Cross ship has been
attacked and sunk as crew
jumped into the fiery ocean.
The filming is captivating
and the underwater shots are
so disturbing that you might
gulp for air. The movie is full
of action and color to keep
you on your toes.
These are soldiers who have
strength from within and will
not give up without a fight.
A story where HOPE is a
weapon. Their true survival
is the ultimate victory. It is
an action packed movie that
tells the story of the largest
World War II effort to evacuate
Allied troops.
It reminded us of our own fathers’
service in World War II
and it made us proud them.
It also is a reminder of world
BRANDEN & JAMES, “a powerhouse cello and vocal duo”
(The Fight Magazine, Los Angeles), brings the soulful timbre
of James on his cello combined with Branden’s emotional and
powerful vocals, creating a sound that leaves audiences feeling
moved and inspired. “…the always supportive, sometimes
haunting power of the cello accompanying Branden’s voice solidifies
the classical sound, adds new depth to the popular, and
allows the audience to just sit back and take it in…so movingly,
that you may forget to breathe!” says Paul Lisnek – Host of
Broadway in Chicago Backstage.
The energy and fervor behind their music has a story to tell
of their unique pairing. Branden had a successful career on
stage and in recording prior to his meeting the Australian cellist,
James. Some of Branden’s accolades include finishing as 2013
Finalist on America’s Got Talent, appearances at The Metropolitan
Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and Los Angeles Opera,
two world tours with the renowned Twelve Tenors and two solo
releases worldwide. James brought to the mix his own share
of musical accomplishments, accompanying Olivia Newton
John, Idina Menzel and Bernadette Peters in multiple concerts.
He initially came on board to music direct one of many charity
concerts in which Branden was performing, and their connection
was so immense they began to play together regularly. The
two started creating arrangements of “familiar tunes that make
you listen to them like you’ve never heard them before.” Shortly
after playing their first public concert together, they’ve been
touring around the world with their original songs and innovative,
classically inspired covers.
Since then, they have shared the stage with legends such as
Sarah Maclachlan, Rita Moreno, Sally Struthers, Loretta Divine,
Bruce Vilanch, Constantine Maroulis and The PussyCat Dolls.
They regularly entertain for Princess, Oceana and Azamara
Cruise lines with their energetic shows, “At The Corner of Symphony
and Soul” and “From Bach to Bieber”. In 2016 they made
their debuts at Birdland Jazz, New York City, The Purple Room,
Palm Springs and The Palm Cabaret in Puerto Vallarta to much
acclaim. Reminiscent for some as The Piano Guys meets Josh
Groban, they weave familiar melodies of pop tunes in classical
style with their own unique sound. Branden says, “people tell us
we’re so unique and different. I think that’s what excites us most.
We’re actually doing something that hasn’t been done before.”
In 2017, they look forward to international appearances in
Australia, Dubai, Havana, Cuba, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy and
Vancouver, B.C.. Stateside, they will return to The Purple Room
in Palm Springs and make debuts at Market Days in Chicago,
The Post Office in Ogunquit, Maine, Martini’s Above Fourth
in San Diego, The Dunes in Saugatuck, Michigan, and a solo
concert at the hot new venue in Las Vegas called The Space.
In the meantime, Branden and James are shooting new music
videos and recording original songs, especially written for cello
and tenor.
I was with Danny Mills the last forty-five days
of his life. Visiting daily for forty-five days in
the hospital, and five in the nursing home
with hospice.
I didn’t know I’d be so close to Danny at
the end of his life, though. We don’t always
know why we end up where we do. I don’t
By Joel Kramer like visiting people in hospitals. Yet, here I
was, going once, and sometimes twice a day,
and not even thinking about it. I remember being told decades
ago, that you never know who will be there in the end.
A Tribute to
Sylvester “DANNY” Mills
NOVEMBER 1st, 1959 - APRIL 11th, 2017
I’ve known Danny for more than 20 years. We tried for almost
10 years to make a long-term relationship work. As most people
find out, relationships can be enlightening, educating, peaceful,
loving, kind, and considerate, among other positive things.
And can be all the opposites of those things too. I knew Danny
well. And maybe more than most. He and I had an ongoing
connection with mutual friends and our families, even 10 years
after we split up.
I never considered Danny not being here anymore. I knew about
his medical issues and that the prognoses weren’t good. But it’s
still hard to imagine someone being physically gone. That person
is no longer going to answer our calls, texts, or join us for a meal,
ever again. It’s so final.
Danny’s charm usually overflowed in public. The world was
truly his stage. Danny surely felt goodness and honor, guilt and
shame, Love and respect, anger and fear, despair, hope, and
joy. Some of what we’re all going to experience in life. Danny
could talk to just about anyone, and have no reservation about
engaging a stranger. Over shaking someone’s hand, he had a
desire to hug everyone, and make them smile. Danny couldn’t
understand why most single people had such a hard time
meeting someone. “Just go up and talk to them” he would say.
Anywhere. And he did.
Danny loved and adored so many people. He mentioned so
many people over the years. Mentioning both family and friends’
names repeatedly, he was always remembering every funny
detail about them. Danny laughed easily and often. His intention
was often for pure laughter.
Danny wouldn’t want us to be in ongoing sadness over his
demise. But to let good memories about him go on. He’d want us
to laugh, be silly, and continue to spread Love and goodness all
around. Maybe we are here in life to learn. Things happen to us
that don’t immediately reveal their meaning. But through time, we
find out the true meaning of what is, and maybe also, what was.
