Breaking sharply from post 4 under jockey
Tracy Hebert, Woodacouldadid sprinted to
a wire-to-wire victory in the 6 1/2-furlong,
$40,000 Russell and Helen Foutz Distaff
Handicap (R) on April 24 at SunRay Park.
Woodacouldadid set fractions of :23.08
and :46.81 before reaching the finish line
1 3/4 lengths in front of Desert City in
1:18.19. Jose R. Gonzalez Jr. saddled the
homebred 6-year-old daughter of Minister
Eric for owner Terrine G. Ransier of
Deming, New Mexico.
Woodacouldadid is one of four black-type
winners sired by Minister Eric, a Kentuckybred
son of the A.P. Indy stallion Old
Trieste. Raced in California and Kentucky
from 2003-06, Minister Eric earned
$562,771 from 13 starts and scored a halflength
victory in the 1 1/16-mile, $200,000
San Fernando Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2) for
4-year-olds at San Anita Park in 2005.
Minister Eric entered stud in 2007 and has
sired the earners of more than $2.3 million
from 71 starters. The stallion stood the 2015
season at Lake Star Stud in Kentucky.
Woodacouldadid’s dam, Prospective Girl,
is a 13-year-old unraced Kentucky-bred mare
by the Danzig stallion Langfuhr who has
foaled two winners from as many starters.
Woodacouldadid’s second dam, the winning
Woodman mare Woodman’s Prospect, is a half
sister to Windrush, the winner of the $109,800
Stymie Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct in 2001.
Woodacouldadid returned a $3.80 win
mutuel as the 9-10 favorite in the Russell
and Helen Foutz Distaff, just four weeks
after she sprung a 34-1 upset victory in the
5 1/2-furlong, $100,000 La Coneja Stakes
(R) for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares
at Sunland Park. All told, the mare has won
eight of 23 races, including both of her outs
this season, and the $24,000 winner’s share
of the Foutz Distaff purse bumped her
bankroll to $203,218.
Rogue Divergent finished third, 3
1/4 lengths behind the winner, and was
followed by My Bikini Fell Off, Sunday
Rose, and One Foxy Babe.
Runner-up Desert City is a 5-year-old
daughter of the late Desert God campaigned
by Stable HMA, which claimed the mare for
$10,000 at Sunland Park on April 8. Raced
exclusively in New Mexico, the mare has won
two of 15 starts and has earned $45,205.
Rogue Divergent is owned by Dr.
Miguel Gallegos’ Gallegos del Norte
Racing of Albuquerque, which also
bred the 4-year-old daughter of the
Carson City stallion Valet Man. Rogue
Divergent has won three of 11 outs,
and the $4,000 third-place share of
the Foutz Distaff purse increased her
bankroll to $45,961.

Elvin Gonzalez rode Shining Source to
a neck victory in the May 8, 1-mile Jack
Cole Stakes (R) for New Mexico-breds at
SunRay Park.
Sent to post as the 9-5 favorite in the
field of six, Shining Source made his eightfurlong
trip in 1:39.32. The 6-year-old
dark bay or brown gelding races for Barton
Ranch Stables LLC and trainer Blake Rust.
Shining Source was bred by Susan
Vescovo. The gelding is one of 17 winners
from 34 starters sired by Source. A
Florida-bred son of the Buckaroo stallion
Montbrook and a half brother to stakes
winners Dinner Affair and Reporter, Source
earned $368,125 from 61 starts from
2001-06, and his resume included a thirdplace
finish in the 5 1/2-furlongs, $54,150
KLAQ Handicap at Sunland Park in ’03.
Source has sired the earners of more than
$980,000 from six crops. Now 19, Source
is owned by Chris P. Hourigan and stands at
Hourigan Horse Farm at Anthony, NM.
Shining Source’s dam, the winning New
Mexico-bred Comet Shine mare Shine Miss
Comet, has produced two winners from as
many starters, including Kimbell, a winning
half sister to Shining Source who ran second
in last year’s New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks
(R) and Enchantress Stakes (R), both at
Sunland Park. Shining Source’s second dam,
Atlantic Miss, is a winning California-bred
daughter of the Icecapade stallion Fatih.
Shining Source was coming off of a
Sunland Park meet during which the gelding
scored a one-length victory in the March
18, $85,000 New Mexico State University
Handicap (R) at 1 mile and 70 yards. Raced
exclusively in New Mexico, Shining Source
has won eight of 32 starts, and the $24,000
winner’s share of the $40,000 Jack Cole
purse bumped his earnings to $253,858.
Song Of Laura, an 8-1 longshot,
finished second and was followed by
Weather Dodger, That’s Who, Atillas Gift,
and Desert Mystery.
A 5-year-old gelding by the Sultry
Song stallion Song Of Navarrone, Song
Of Laura races for Teed Off Stable LLC.
The bay gelding, who was claimed for
$25,000 on November 28 at Zia Park,
has won five of 25 outs, and the $8,800
runner-up share of the purse pushed his
bankroll to $177,778.
Weather Dodger is a homebred son of
Weather Warning campaigned by Lisa M.
Rehburg of Mountain Center, California.
A 5-year-old gelding, Weather Dodger
has won four of 23 starts and has earned
$229,031, and his two stakes victories
include a three-quarter length score in the
January 14, $85,000 Albert Dominguez
Memorial Handicap (R) at Sunland Park.
