SAFETY BASICS
The Commonwealth, along with every
state and territory, has legislation to
cover health and safety in the workplace.
These laws provide each person in every
Australian workplace with specifi c legal
responsibilities to ensure the health and
safety of themselves and others.
Where the requirements of these laws are not met,
stiff fi nancial penalties and jail terms may apply.
Although each jurisdiction has its own laws, the
central features are the same.
Employers carry the main responsibility for health
and safety in the workplace. They are required by
a ‘duty of care’ principle to show due diligence
in protecting the health, safety and welfare of
employees, visitors, contractors, general public and
others in the workplace.
Employers must establish that all reasonably
practical measures have been taken to control
hazards against all possible injuries and illnesses
arising from the workplace.
Employees have a responsibility to take reasonable
care of themselves and others, and to cooperate
with employers in matters of health and safety.
Manufacturers and suppliers of plants and
substances have a responsibility to ensure their
products are safe when properly used, and to
provide information on the correct use and potential
hazards associated with the use of the products in
the workplace.
Apart from the legal responsibility, morally, no
employer wants to see his or her employees
injured. Each year in Australia approximately 230
people are killed at work, with a further 130,000

workers compensation claims for work related
injuries or illness.
In September 2008, the Workplace Heath and Safety
Regulation 2008 was introduced, and had several
changes from the previous 1997 regulation. Some
of the most noticeable changes are the stricter
licensing requirements for persons performing work
that is deemed high risk or involves the operation of
earthmoving equipment or particular cranes.
The specifi c classes of work falling within these
categories were previously known as ‘prescribed
occupations’. These changes were made to align
more closely with the national licensing model, as
part of the State Government’s commitment to the
national harmonization of OHS laws.
Further harmonization initiatives include the power
for safety representatives to issue Provisional
Improvement Notices (PINs) and a nationally
recognized general introduction card. A new
scaffolding code of practice has also been launched
to specifi cally address the risks associated with
swing stages.

detect carbon monoxide (CO)
gas, however HLP Controls
have two reliable and accurate
electronic detectors to ensure
any gas leaks are quickly
identifi ed.
For a fi xed CO gas detection
solution, the GAS Alarm KaD is
a small, self contained battery
powered CO gas detector that
looks similar to a smoke detector.
Giving off an 85dB alarm when
CO gas exceeds dangerous
levels, the KaD is designed to
be mounted on a wall or ceiling
where a small inbuilt sensor can
detect CO gas from cook tops,
car exhausts, wood fi res or gas
appliances.
The AZ7701 model is a portable
CO gas detector, perfect for
OH&S staff, centre managers
or HVAC installers who need
to regularly visit locations with
potentially high levels of CO gas
or as a method of monitoring
generator output in closed spaces.
Both alarms are set to alert users
of gas levels from 0 to 999 PPM
(25-999 PPM for AZ7701) and
are powered by batteries, with
a backlit LED display and three
LED indicators.

HVAC 101: CTS COPPER FLANGE ADAPTOR
Designed to provide 100% electrolysis
protection, the CTS copper fl ange
adaptor is the latest addition to the
Tradelink HVAC range.
Not only does the CTS copper fl ange adaptor
ensure longer life and greater integrity between the
copper tube and the fl anged device, the simple and
fail safe installation method saves time and labour
costs as well, making every job risk free.
Unlike other copper fl ange adaptors, the CTS
product includes a patented EDPM insulator for
added protection and confi dence in the system.
This simple and unique feature puts CTS a cut
above the rest and is critical in ensuring confi dence
in correct Flange installation.
Installation is simple – just place the backing fl ange
over the copper tube and insert the copper adaptor.
Braise the adaptor, allow to cool then place the
insulator over the adaptor and between the backing
fl ange. Bolt up the fl ange and you’re done.
Due to the fl ange adaptor being able to rotate on
the tube, alignment of the bolt holes is quick and
simple.
The range suits a number of different installations
with various types of adaptors available including
ANSI, DIN, Table D/E, Table H and galvanized
Table D/E fl anges. ANSI fl anges are suitable for
all gas applications up to 2Mpa. CTS Flanges are
manufactured in Australia from Australian copper
tube and are available now in most Tradelink
Branches.
