2 PROGRAMME O-RINGEN VÄRMLAND 2017
O-Ringen is back in Värmland
for the first time in 20 years!
Now it’s our turn!
We orienteers in Värmland have been planning
and planning, preparing and preparing,
pre-running and pre-running, building and rebuilding
(a little bit), in other words everything
that needs to be done before a big event. We
have been working on this in one way or another
for over three years. Now we are full of
expectations and ready for the orienteering
party to begin!
We are all guests
In the context of such a huge event, it is clear
that we are all guests. Guests in the forests and
fields, guests in private homes, and guests as
tourists. We members of the organizing committee
are thankful that we are welcomed by
the landowners and that we can show our finest,
wildest, and most detailed areas to the orienteering
world. We are also glad that the people
of Värmland have shown great hospitality
and opened up their private homes and cabins
to orienteers. Thanks to them, O-Ringen can be
the world’s largest orienteering adventure.
O-Ringen is certified as an environmentally
friendly event. This means needing to think
about minimizing our effect on the environment.
This year we have decided to include
bus tickets in the price of entry. We hope that
this step gets more people to ride buses out to
the arenas in order to shorten the travel time
to the arenas and reduce the number of car
trips. We have also worked hard to secure local
providers for various goods and services. We
can proudly announce that all bread used in
our sandwiches available for sale in kiosks and
stands is freshly baked in Arvika; and all salads
are made in Värmland. This also reduces the
need for additional transport.
A living event.
Without out partners and providers, O-Ringen
would not be itself. We have partners
and providers who are completely engaged
in our effort to create a living event. This year
we have many different exhibitors and booths
on the shopping street, spanning the distance
from exciting industrial firms to quality handicrafts
and everything in between. Come by
the shopping street and let yourself be entertained,
motivated, and inspired!
A new hideaway?
During the O-Ringen week you are going to
visit several different municipalities. Arvika is
the hosting municipality and contains O-Ringen
City; however, Eda, Sunne, Kil, and Karlstad
municipalities are also involved in a variety
of ways. We hope that during this week you
find yourself a new favorite place to remember
in Värmland when the winter chills arrive.
As I write this, I am crossing my fingers for
beautiful, warm summer weather, perfect for
swimming. We have many great swimming
spots along our lakes in western Värmland. But
if it doesn’t turn out that way… we don’t let
weather stop us! Regardless of weather, Värmland
offers plenty to do for any taste. Stop by
one of the tourist offices on the shopping
street and get some ideas.
Excited officials
Over 1300 officials are working hard to make
sure that O-Ringen runs smoothly during the
entire week. We all want for you to experience
WILD BEAUTIFUL VÄRMLAND and we will do our
best to make that happen. Värmland is a small
district in Sweden’s orienteering community,
and finding officials and volunteers for all tasks
has been somewhat of a challenge. Besides
our 21 orienteering clubs in Värmland, we
have been cooperating with local sports clubs.
A huge thank-you to all volunteers who have
invested time and vacation to create O-Ringen
Värmland 2017. This year we have introduced
a number of technical innovations to keep up
with the latest developments in technology.
For example, you can register for direct entry
courses from your phone, without standing in
line. We believe that this will help provide even
better service for our competitors.
Now all the controls are sitting out in the
forest and waiting for the runners to come. We
are ready for O-Ringen Värmland 2017. Now
the orienteering party can begin.
Welcome to Wild Beautiful Värmland and
good luck in the forest!
Takes Care of the Environment
As an environmentally certified
event, O-Ringen puts a high priority
on a well thought-out and easily accessible
waste management system,
of which you are an important part!
Together we can make sure that
our impact on the environment is
minimal.
Arvika in Värmland cherishes the global and
local environment, everything from the small
things in your immediate surroundings to the
large things in nature. These are the principals
that O-Ringen’s trash sorting and recycling systems
follow.
Recycling stations can be found at the personal
hygiene stations at the campground.
There, you can recycle plastic bags, packaging,
metal, glass, newspapers, food waste, and other
waste. Food waste should be placed in paper
bags available at the personal hygiene stations.
The bags should then be placed in the
designated containers. The campground also
has specified grilling locations, where you can
find containers for disposable grills and ashes.
Each arena will have containers for paper
and plastic packaging, cans and bottles, food
waste, and other waste.
There are several recycling stations where
you can return cans and bottles and also recycle
packaging and newspapers.
Other trash items, such as electronics, batteries,
etc., can be deposited at Mosseberg’s
trash disposal. For more information see
There, you can also find a guide to sorting
your waste.
The more you sort, the more can the waste
be recycled and become new products! This
saves energy, carbon dioxide emissions, and
natural resources by reusing materials multiple
times. All waste management is done
in cooperation with the Arvika municipality,
Västvärmlands LBC , and Returpack.
We can all help by picking up after yourself
and others, keeping your surroundings clean
and nice, and making sure to leave Wild, Beautiful
Värmland as beautiful as when we came!
Payment options at O-Ringen
In order to increase security both for you as
a competitor and for all O-Ringen officials,
we are working to minimize the use of cash
during O-Ringen. Other payment options,
such as credit card payment or swish, will be
available at nearly all shops and locations accepting
payment. It is, of course, still possible
to pay with cash, but such options are more
limited than in prior years. If you want to pay
with cash, make sure that your bills are still in
circulation. Unfortunately, we cannot accept
expired bills or coins.
Thank you for helping us make O-Ringen a
safer event for everyone!

Electronic punching / SportIdent (SI) chips
It is essential for the smooth running of O-Ringen
that every competitor has his or her own
SI chip with a number corresponding to the
number recorded in our data system. The
number of an SI chip used by a competitor can
be changed at oringen.se/stamplingsbricka
or at Competitor Services. This year SI chips
will be checked on the way to the start for all
competitors. Make sure to pass the SI control
station before you leave the arena on the way
to the start.
You can rent an SI chip at Competitor Services
(50 SEK per day, or 250 SEK for the whole
week). Rented SI chips must be returned at the
end of the rental period or after downloading.
Competitors will be charged 600 SEK for an
unreturned rented SI chip. The chip will then
not be usable at any other competition.
Entry on the day
If you did not pre-register via oringen.se, you
can get help registering for the competitions
at Competitor Services at the arenas. At some
times of day, this can lead to longer lines..
Environmental concerns
O-Ringen is an environmentally friendly event.
• using public transport and bicycles as much
as possible to get around the area and get
• conserve water and electricity;
• sort trash and recycling: sorting bins can be
• purchase ecological, locally-sourced, and
environmentally certified foods and products
soap, shampoo, conditioner, and soap. All
shampoo and soap provided by O-Ringen
at the showers at the arenas is environmentally
certified;
• pick up after yourself and others: clean surroundings
improve life for everyone;
• conduct an inspection of your club’s area
when you leave it, both at the campground,
at the arenas, and in the showers;
• respect all areas marked “out of bounds” in
terrain before, during, and after the competition;
• always act as an ambassador for an environmentally
friendly orienteering sport by
following all the recommendations listed
above.
on Tuesday, 10:30am). No cost. By registering
you confirm that your name and result can be
presented on the internet as well as on Radio
O-Ringen broadcasts.
Classes
Two classes. DH-12 and DH13-16.
For others who are interested, see below.
Each competition day is independent, and no
combined results will be recorded.
Punching system
SportIdent Air (SIAC). You can run with your
own SIAC-chip if you have over. Otherwise you
can borrow one for free.
Competition
The Bagheera Maze O-Ringen 2017 is raced
through head-to-head duels. Challenge a
friend or rival in the Bagheera Maze. There will
be two Mazes this year, identical but mirror images
of each other. Competitors start two at a
time: one has Course A and the other Course
B. Competitors run through the first maze (A or
B, depending on the one you have), come out
the back of the maze to a turn-around control
outside the maze, and then go through the
other maze from the back and then run to the
finish.
This setup gives the public a very clear
understanding of the standings at the turnaround
control and then allows them to see
who is first to the finish.
See the attached sketch of what a maze
map might look like.
Setup – Qualification
Each competitor can run a maximum of two
times (once with Course A and once with
Course B). You can run with anyone you want,
as long as they are from the same class (DH-12
or DH13-16). If there is no one you want to run
with, the organizers will add a competitor in
the vacant spot.
Start intervals will be 30 seconds between
each pair. If there is a lot of crowding, the organizers
reserve the right to change the start
interval.
In order to go through to the Finals, you
have to be fast. It doesn’t matter if you run
Course A or B, since they are the same. The four
fastest boys and girls in DH12 and DH13-16
go through to the Quarter-finals. This will be
announced right after the qualifiers, around
3:50pm (12:50pn on Tuesday).
Setup - Finals
All 16 finalists (8 in DH12 and 8 in DH13-16)
must be in place by 3:50pm (12:50pm on Tuesday)
in the special tent for finalists. If you are
not there in time, you forfeit, and your opponent
moves on by default.
Finals have a knockout format. The maze is
the same as in the qualification races, but the
course is new for each round. The fastest time
in the qualifier (regardless of gender) competes
against the 8th fastest, the 2nd against
the 7th, and so on.
The fastest time from the qualification can
choose their course (A or B) in each round.
Heat order:
1.QF DH12 1-8, 4-5, 3-6 and 2-7
2. QF DH13-16 1-8, 4-5, 3-6 och 2-7
3. SF DH12 1/8-4/5 and 3/6-2/7
4. SF DH13-16 1/8-4/5 and 3/6-2/7
5. FINAL DH12
6. FINAL DH13-16
The winners in each heat in the QF and SF will
immediately go back to the finalist tent and
wait there for the next round.
Radio O-Ringen
The finals will be broadcast LIVE on Radio
O-Ringen from 3:50pm-5pm each day that
the Bagheera Maze is operating (Tuesday between
12:50pm-2pm).
The commentator and speaker during the
Bagheera Maze is Anton Sjökvist.
Prizegiving
Prizes will be awarded immediately after the
finals, approximately 5pm (Tuesday 2pm) in
Radio O-Ringen’s studio at O-Ringen Square.
Shadowing
No shadowing is allowed in either the qualification
or the finals. On the other hand, shadowing
is allowed during Maze for All times, see
below.
Example of how the Bagheera maze will look like.
Only competitors can be in the mazes, as well
as in the designated areas behind the mazes.
Maze for All
The mazes with finals courses will remain open
until 8pm each evening, but without timing
and results. Anyone can try the Bagheera
Maze! Race a duel against your grandchild,
your mom or dad, or a friend from a neighboring
club.
Several laminated maps will be available at
the entrance to the Bagheera Maze. Feel free
to borrow a map, but make sure to return it
once you have run.
Camping at O-Ringen City
In order to simplify the traffic
situation and minimize congestion
during O-Ringen, there are a number
of one-way sections and zones
of reduced speed. Respect these
restrictions and follow all directions
from the traffic officials. Take it
easy and show consideration when
driving, especially within O-Ringen
City itself. Keep in mind that there
is a large number of people moving
around in this area, both adults and
children. Drive safely and carefully!
The doors to the O-Ringen City campground
open on Wednesday, July 19. This is an entire
temporary city that has been planned and
prepared for several years. The camping area is
spread out on and around the Arvika airport’s
runway, with O-Ringen Square as the obvious
center.
The community feeling is an important reason
why nearly half of O-Ringen’s participants
have chosen to stay at the campground. Its
compact setup gives O-Ringen Värmland 2017
all the possibilities to create a sense of community
and camaraderie both within and between
all clubs and participants.
The campground is divided into five different
areas (A-E). These areas contain approximately
7 personal hygiene stations, where
campsite residents have access to flushing toilets
and areas for washing up and doing dishes.
If you have booked a camping spot, you
can find the location of your spot on oringen.
se about a week before your arrival.
There are altogether 2400 camping spots,
including 600 with access to electricity. With a
few weeks to go to opening day, nearly 2100
spots have been booked.
O-Ringen City by car in order to get on a bus to
the arena, the distance from parking to the bus
Campsite distribution
You can get information about which camping
spot you have been assigned at oringen.
se from July 11.
Distribution of camping spots is done by
club, district, and country. Sites with and without
electricity are located in separate places.
That means that those who booked place with
electricity cannot live together with others in
their club. On the other hand, the internal distribution
of campsites with electricity is done
by club/district/country as well.
For extra large camping spots there is no
guarantee that you will be located together
with your club.
If you book a camping spot after June 1,
there is no guarantee that you will be located
together with your club.
Look ahead of time to see which area (A-
E) your spot is in; choose the corresponding
Open fires are forbidden throughout the
O-Ringen City area. Grilling can take place, but
only at the approved permanent grill locations
in O-Ringen City. Fire extinguishers are placed
throughout the area.
Think about the risk of theft and do not
leave valuables unattended.
Personal hygiene stations and showers
There are 7 different personal hhygiense stations
throughout O-Ringen City. See the overview
stations have flushing toilets and running water
Did you know that…
O-Ringen City’s campground with its approximately
2400 campsite is probably Sweden’s
largest in terms of number of sites? For example,
there are approximately twice as many
spots here as at Böda camping on Öland.
A single camping spot is approximately 81 m2.
There are approximately 2500 meters of water
and sewage hoses and one sewage tank under
ground.
Nearly 3000 meters of cable have been installed
in order to supply electricity to the 600
campsites and meet O-Ringen Square’s electricity
needs.

A Festival Atmopshere
at the End-of-the-Week Parties
Finish the O-Ringen week in the
best possible style by attending
one of O-Ringen’s legendary parties
with your friends. Celebrate a
great week of fighting in Värmland’s
forests! Regardless of whether you
reached the podium, everyone can
be proud of taking on the challenge
of O-Ringen at their own level.
For the young
Do you have some energy left after five days
in the woods? Then the youth disco is a must
for you! On Friday evening the restaurant tent
at O-Ringen City will undergo a makeover and
become a disco. Between 6 and 8:30pm the
tent belongs to those under 13, and later in
the evening (9pm-12am) the 13-17 year olds
take over. Both discos are, of course, alcohol-free.
During the evening you can purchase
popcorn, candy, and soft drinks.
For the grown-ups
The Olsson Brothers invite you to a full evening
in their fine restaurant and nightclub Olssons
Brygga, a short distance from Central Arvika.
A portion of the restaurant will be reserved
for O-Ringen participants, where you will be
served a light meal, and provide with music
and your own bar and DJ. Everything is in
place for an unforgettable evening with old
and new friends. After dinner, partygoers will
be treated to live music from two stages and a
nightclub. An extra party tent will be provided
to accommodate the O-Ringen party crowd.
This will be a preview of the big Harbor Party
that gets going the weekend after O-Ringen
moves on from Arvika and Värmland.
You can sign up for the parties through oringen.se.
What bus lines are available?
O-Ringen’s buses run during competition time
(approximately 6:30am-4:30pm), and make
circuit trips between O-Ringen City’s bus stop
and the corresponding arena. They do not
stop at any other bus stops along the way.
How can I bike or walk to central
Arvika?
There is a special walking and biking path
from O-Ringen Square to central Arvika. The
distance is approximately 3km. The path starts
from O-Ringen Square and heads west. A portion
of the walking and biking path follows the
same road as the one-way car traffic. Barriers
separate the different traffic lanes. Use caution,
especially when crossing this road.
How can I find my camping spot
when I arrive at O-Ringen City?
Camping spot assignments will be published
on oringen.se well ahead of the time
when O-Ringen City’s campground opens on
Wednesdaym July 19. There you can see which
spot has been assigned to you and in which
of the areas (A-E) you live. Follow signs to the
correct area from the entrance to the campground.
Each “street” in the campsite is signed
with the numbers of the spots it leads to.
How can I get to O-Ringen City’s
bus stop if I am staying at the
campground?
O-Ringen City’s bus stop is located about 500
meters east of O-Ringen Square. If you are
camping, you can either walk or bike to the
bike parking, which is located 300 meters from
the bus stop. It is not allowed to bike the last
part of the way up to the bus stop. Follow the
marked way so that buses have clear access to
and from the stop. See the overview map of
O-Ringen City in this brochure.
How can I get to O-Ringen City’s bus
stop if I am driving?
If you are traveling by car, follow signs to
O-Ringen City’s campground and then signs
to parking for bus passengers. Parking is located
about 200-800 meters from the bus stop.
See the overview map of O-Ringen City in this
brochure.
Is there visitor parking for O-Ringen
City / O-Ringen Square?
Yes, visitor parking with approximately 250
spots is available next to camping area C. Follow
signs from the roundabout Gaterondellen
in Arvika. See the overview map of O-Ringen
City in this brochure.
When are most competitors starting
and traveling?
Under normal circumstances, most competitors
per hour start between 10am and 12pm,
but this also depends on outside factors, such
as weather. If you have free start times and
want to minimize the risk for queues at bus
stops and parking lots, you can choose to start
outside this time range.
Can I ride the bus to the arenas if I
am not competing?
Yes, traveling companions and spectators can
ride O-Ringen buses for free.
Which route should I take to get to
the arenas each day?
Always follow the recommended directions
according to the overview maps and corresponding
information. If you are coming from
a direction other than Arvika, join the indicated
directions as early as possible. Using the
recommended travel directions improves traffic
flow for both cars and buses. Current traffic
information can also be found in the program
brochure on oringen.se and in the app O-Ringen
Play.

Bus Schedule
The first bus departs from O-Ringen City at
6:30am, and the last bus back departs from
the competition arena at 4:30pm. Buses will
mostly depart every 6th or 12th minute, according
to the planned bus travel density in
the graphic. Note that, due to the legally required
rest periods for bus drivers, there will
be some longer breaks in bus traffic, especially
on the way back to O-Ringen City (at approximately
11:30am for stages 1-2 and 11:00am for
stages 3.4).
During periods of highest travel volume
out to the arenas (normally 8-10am), queues
are like to form at the bus stop. Make sure to
give yourself ample time to complete the journey
to the arena or travel outside the hours of
highest volume if you are able.
Make sure that you are prepared to get on
the bus when it arrives and follow the officials’
instructions, so that the loading process goes
smoothly. If you get on the bus through the
rear entrance, always go to the left in the bus if
any places there are available.
Animal and allergy buses
Each convoy of buses has special buses designated
for people with allergies and for pets.
Follow signs and directions.
Transport to MtbO arenas.
You have to use your own transport to get to
the MtbO arenas. See additional instructions in
the competition information for MtbO. Pekring
is free. Stage 5 takes place at Arena Rackstad,
with two parking options: free (red) and paid
(blue). See the overview map of O-Ringen City
for details.
Transport to Trail-O arenas.
You have to use your own transport to get to
the Trail-O arenas. All stages of Trail-O competitions
take place in Arvika or in its immediate
proximity. The municipality’s local parking
rules apply.
Times and distances
Travel times are calculated taking queues into
account. They are calculated from O-Ringen
City’s bus stop (bus) or the Gaterondellen
roundabout in Arvika (car).

Training maps
We offer 4 different training areas for orienteering
and one for MtbO. The maps are printed
with all control locations and with suggested
courses corresponding to different lengths
and difficulty levels.
Maps can be purchased through the registration
portal at oringen.se or at Competitor
Services at O-Ringen City. Controls are out in
the forest for varying durations of time, depending
on the specific map, but the longest
is from May 1 to September 30. Purchased
maps can be picked up at Competitor Services.
If you would like to receive them by mail
earlier, send an email with your request to
info@oringen.se.
Controls are marked with poles with letter
codes that can be registered in the mobile app
After completing the course, each participant
receives a prize.
Each String-O course has a different theme,
which will be visible along the course. Each
classes compete in the Elite Tour.
This is a tough competition with two
long distance races, a shortened
long distance, a middle distance, and
a sprint in central Arvika.
The top favorite in D21 is current World Champion
in the middle and long distances Tove Alexandersson
from Sweden, who will be challenged
at the top by her teammates on the
Swedish national team Emma Johansson and
Karolin Ohlsson, as well as some international
stars and veterans, such as Simone Niggli from
Switzerland and Anne Margrethe Hausken
Nordberg from Norway.
The H21 class has a very strong starting
field, where we can expect exciting battles
between such starts as multiple World Champion
Olav Lundanes from Norway, Tiomila and
Jukola winner Norwegian Eskil Kinneberg, and
local boy and Swedish national team star Jonas
Leandersson, just to mention a few of the
many stars in this class.
The junior classes will feature many Swedish
and international JWOC runners.
For the first time this year, the junior elite
classes will also compete in the Elite Sprint
that takes place on Tuesday (Activity Day)
in central Arvika. We can expect thousands
of spectators and large crowds at one of the
year’s most well-attended competitions.
The week concludes with a chasing start in
tough and demanding terrain. You can expect
some exciting battles at the top in the woods
around the Arena Rackstad.
Program
Stage 1: Arena Skjutsbol, Long Distance.
Classic long distance courses with somewhat
fewer controls than usual. The terrain is varied,
mostly good running with some shrub-covered
marshes and open hilltops.
Stage 2: Arena Torget Arvika, Sprint. Typical
city sprint with some sections of park/forest.
Expect a lot of spectators and a great atmosphere
all along the course. Finish in the middle
of Arvika’s central square.
Stage 3: Arena Boda. Shortened Long Distance.
An exciting stage in spectacular terrain.
It will be important to recover quickly from
yesterday’s sprint. Orienteering technique,
route choices, and strength will all be crucial
to succeeding on this stage.
Stage 4: Arena Boda, Middle distance. This
area, just to the East of Wednesday map, offers
a highly detailed hillside, where all your orienteering
skills will be tested.
Stage 5: Arena Rackstad, Long distance. This is
perhaps the most physically demanding stage
of the week, combined with detailed contours
and tricky route choices. This challenging final
stage will crown worthy total winners in all
eight Elite Tour classes.
Selection for elite classes
For the DH21 Elite classes, 80 runners will be
selected. DH18-20 Elite will have 120 runners
in each class. Selection criteria are posted on
oringen.se/ under Competition/Our Competitions/Elite
Tour.
Withdrawal
If you need to withdraw from one of the elite
classes, you need to notify elit@oringen.se by
3pm on Saturday, July 22, and a reserve runner
will be placed into your spot. If you withdraw
after that time, no reserve will be placed into
the elite class. In order to be eligible to move
from the reserve list to the elite classes, you
have to confirm your interest by emailing elit@
oringen.se by 3pm on Saturday, July 22.
Special information for elite classes
Special information for elite classes will be
posted on oringen.se and in Eventor no later
than Thursday, July 20
PROGRAMME O-RINGEN VÄRMLAND 2017
17
Stage Start
If you want to pick and choose
which stages and courses to run,
then the Stage Start option is for
you. Every day a number of courses
will be available to choose from,
ranging from short and easy to long
and difficult. If you prefer to compete
and get a total time over three
or five days, then you can find the
same selection of course under the
Personal Program option. For the
Stage Start option, no total time is
computed for you.
Registration
For the first time this year, you can register for
the Stage Start option in one of the following
ways: via oringen.se, through O-Ringen’s registration
service, or at Competitor Services at
O-Ringen City. If you register through oringen.
se, you just need to pick up your bib number
(and an Punching Card if you are renting one)
at Competitor Services at the arena before you
head out to the stat.
You can also register at the “Köp start” /
“Direct entry” tent at the arena’s Competitor
Services. This may require waiting in line before
you can register. Registration is open until
1pm on each of the competition days.
Equipment
You need your bib number and an Punching
Card for electronic punching before you head
to the start.
The bib number can be picked up at Competitor
Services, either at O-Ringen City or at
the arena.
You can either rent an Punching Card or
use your own. Note that the same Punching
Card can only be used once per stage! When
you leave the arena on the way to the start,
you will pass through a control station, where
you can check whether the correct Punching
Card is registered in our system. You can also
check that ahead of time by going to oringen.
se/stamplingsbricka. For more information see
“From registration to start”.
Start
The logo on your bib number corresponds to
the start for your course. The same goes for the
finish chute: run down the chute that has the
same logo as is printed on your bib number.
You can start anytime between 8:30am and
1:30pm.
Take the correct map at the start
You can see which course you are running
both at oringenonline.se and on your bib
number.
Note that the courses Medium 3.0, Medium
3,5, and Medium 4.0 are expected to have so
many competitors that they have two variations
each. The variation that you are running
depends on whether you are competing in the
Stage Start or Personal Program classes. If you
are running Stage Start, take the map labeled
“ES”. If you are running a Personal Program and
have chosen one of the courses listed above,
take the map labeled “EU”.
Win a trip
If you complete at least three of the first stages
in the “Stage Start” or “Personal Program” options,
you can enter a competition to win a trip
for two to Alicante, sponsored by the Bergvik
shopping center. More information and rules
can be found under “Program/prizegiving”.
Personal Program
The Personal Program option allows
you to choose from a number of
pre-defined course and class packages
(corresponding to the Challenge
or Motion/Recreational classes
used in the past), or select your own
custom combination of courses to
compete on. The course options are
the same as for the Stage Start option,
with the only difference being
that you get a combined time at the
end. In addition to looking at results
for an individual stage, you can also
compare your standings with others
running the same course combination
on oringenonline.se.
You can also create a team tag to select those
you want to compare results with within the
Personal Program option. This can be done by
logging onto oringen.se/teamtag with your
reservation number. The Personal Program
option can be selected for three or five days,
and you can start whenever you like between
08:30am and 1:30pm each day. It is also possible
to select pre-defined course packages,
corresponding to the Challenge or Motion/
Recreational classes used in the past.
You can register for the Personal Program
option until 1pm on Sunday (for the 5-day
option) or 1pm on Wednesday (3-day option).
You can register via oringen.se, at the “Köp
Competition Information for
Mountain Bike Orienteering at O-Ringen
O-Ringen 2017 is the first time that
MtbO competition takes places over
five stages at O-Ringen!
The competition takes place on trails and
roads in Värmlands deep woods and is contested
across a number of different competition
classes. The key to success in MtbO is to
maintain high speed while keeping contact
with the map.
Stage start
You can sign up for any of 6 different stage
start classes each arena during each competition
day (9am-1pm) or through oringen.se
or Competitor Services at O-Ringen Square no
later than the evening before the race.
Parking
Parkins is available adjacent to all arenas. There
are also parking places for campers/RVs. Stage
1, Brandsbol, is located immediately adjacent
to the Brandsbols campground. Stage 2, Selma
Spa, is located 400 meters away from Kolsnäs
camping. Stages 3 and 4 are located approximately
2km from the Fryksta campground, and
some places are also available at the arena. No
parking fee or parking ticket is necessary. Travel
to the competition arenas must be done with
your own transport, as no joint transport from
O-Ringen City or other places is available.
Competitor services at the arenas
Competitor services at the arenas include results,
information, access to rented Punching
Cards, registration for stage starts, outdoor
showers, sale of snacks and refreshments, bicycle
wash, and toilets.
Prizegiving
Prizes for stage winners will be handed out at
the prizegiving ceremony at O-Ringen Square.
Competition rules
The Swedish Orienteering Federation’s Competition
Rules 2016-02-22 apply.
Special notes:
• During MtbO competitions at O-Ringen
Värmland you are only allowed to ride on
trails and roads marked on the map, as well
as on asfalt- and gravel-covered areas and on
100% yellow areas. You are not allowed to either
ride or run with your bike through forest.
You are not allowed to bike through white,
50% yellow, or clear-cut areas on the map.
• The competitor must have the bike with
him/her the entire time. For example, the bicycle
cannot be left so that the competitor
can quickly run to a control, punch, and then
return to the bicycle.
• Many of the trails are narrow, and a risk for
collisions exists. Make sure to stay to the right
and use caution! Whenever possible, notify
other riders that you are coming.
• During stages 1, 3, 4, and 5 all competitors
will pass a couple of larger roads used by car
traffic. Cars will have a lower speed limit of 40
km/h, but all other regular traffic rules apply
when biking on the road.
• Be careful, keep to the right, and follow all
instructions given by event officials!
• Forbidden trails and roads are marked with
red crosses on the map and blue-and-yellow
streamers across the trails in terrain. Respect
the forbidden trails. Show consideration to
nearby residents.
• The bib number must be attached to the
front of the bike.
• Equipment requirements include a bicycle
(not electric-powered) and helmet. Otherwise,
there are no additional requirements
on clothing.
• Competitors in all classes are called up 2
minutes before the start and get their map 1
minute before the start.
• The map is printed on plasticized paper using
a laser printer.
• Control codes are printed on the map next
to the control numbers. No separate control
descriptions are available. Rented Punching
Cards can be collected at Competitor Services
at each MtbO arena on the morning of the
competition. Rented Punching Card must be
returned after finish. See detailed information
under “Rules for Punching Cards” in a
different location in the program brochure.
Punching
SportIdent’s (SI) electronic punching system
is used for all races. SI-chips 5-11 can be used.
The competitor must be in possession of the
Punching Card throughout the duration of
the competition, but it does not have to be
attached to the bicycle.
Additional information
Additional information for each stage, describing
specifics applicable to that stage, will be
made available at each arena. The way to the
start will be described in this additional information
and posted at the arenas. Only stages
3 and 4 will have toilets at the start.
Chasing start for stage 5 will be used for all
competitors with a combined time (from stages
1-4) less than 60 minutes behind the class
leader. Competitors with longer total times
or those who do not have a combined time
start after the chasing start with an interval of
1 minute.
of 1 minute.
Competitors in stage start classes can start
from 10am until 2pm.
Direct entries for stage start classes: 9am-1pm.
Distance to the start: 3800 meters on roads.
Orienteering School
Have you never tried orienteering
but want to give it a shot? Or have
you already tried it but feel that you
need a refresher of some of those
map-and-compass skills?
It doesn’t matter what skills and experience
you already have: we at the Orienteering
School have the time and desire to help everyone.
You can decide yourself how much help
you need. Our hope is that after a visit with,
you will feel the confidence and interest to set
out into the woods on an orienteering course.
At the Orienteering School, we will cover all
the basics of orienteering and what happens
at an orienteering event. We will explain to you
how a map is created and how you can use it.
We will also help you learn to use the compass
to orient yourself in the woods. We have a little
training course at the Orienteering School
that you can try out and test your newfound
knowledge on.
If you then feel ready, you can register for
an O-Ringen direct entry course. We will help
you choose the best course that matches your
skills. Start personnel will be available to help
you through the start procedure, and to head
in the right direction to the first control. Once
you finish, please come back and tell us how
it went, show us your routes, and maybe get
a few more tips for improving your orienteering
technique. The Orienteering School can be
found in a tent at each stage of O-Ringen and
is open between 9am-3pm.
Look for the sign that says “Orienteering
School”! The Orienteering School is open for
anyone over the of 9 and is free of charge.
Do you want to try O-Ringen and
the Pole Hunt?
We are offering a Pole Hunt class at every stage
of O-Ringen Värmland 2017. In that class, there
are 20 controls of varying difficulty placed in
the beautiful wilderness of Värmland. You can
decide which controls you want to visit and in
what order. You can also choose whether you
want to run one or more stages.
This is how it works
The Pole Hunt is available at each of O-Ringen’s
five stages. Stages 1 and 2 are at the Skjutsbol
arena, stages 3 and 4 at the Boda arena, and
stage 5 at the Rackstad arena.
At each of the arenas you can find experienced
officials who can take care of you if you
want to try the Pole Hunt class.
You will get instructions on the spot about
how everything works, as well as help with
registration, maps, and the Punching Card
used for electronic punching. We also have our
own, well-marked, assembly area at the arena
where you can hang out during the day.
All participants must have an Punching
Card so that the organizers know that no one
has been left behind in the forest. Your start is
at one of the regular O-Ringen starts. When
you are done Pole Hunting, download at the
finish, so that we know that you have come
back. There is no time being recorded in the
Pole Hunt class, and you can decide how many
of the 20 controls you want to visit.
The poles are located at existing controls
that are also visited by competitors in other
O-Ringen classes. Each control has a letter
combination that you can note and a QR-code
which you can scan on the Pole Hunt app.
You can drive your own car to the arena
or take a bus from O-Ringen City in Arvika. If
you choose to drive, you must pre-purchase a
parking ticket via oringen.se. If you choose to
park at O-Ringen City and ride the bus, then
both the parking and the bus ride are free.
It might be a good idea to bring some food
and drink with you, but there are also many
choices of refreshments for sale at the arenas.
Everyone is welcome, and we will take care
of you!
Childcare
Child care will be available at the
main arenans at all stages of O-Ringen
2017. You are very welcome to
drop off your kids with us while you
orienteer. Our goal is to make both
parents and children feel welcome
and comfortable, and to make sure
the children are safe and have a
good time in our wild, wonderful
Värmland.
Registration
If your child is not pre-registered, you can buy
a ticket via the Registration Portal or at Competitor
Services at O-Ringen City or at the
arenas. A receipt/confirmation of registration
must be shown at child card. Take a screenshot
of your confirmation in case the network
in the arena becomes overloaded. Child care
cannot be paid for with card or cash.
Check-in
When you check in your child for child care,
you will be asked to fill in a form describing the
child’s allergies and other useful information.
You can get this form at Competitor Services
ahead of time, or on the spot. (It can also be
printed out from our homepage, see the link
below.) After check-in, your child will be given
a vest with a bib number, name, and other information.
Every child will be provided with a
bag, in which you can leave additional clothes
and toys. We then show you and the child the
various available activities and locations. and
eventually leave him or her with our child care
officials.
Activities
The child care area will contain a number of
different activities and experiences. We have a
puzzle station, a woodshop, toy cars and legos,
a quiet tent with story time and rest, and an
outdoor playground. This year’s child care area
is divided into five themes: Stone Age, Wizards
and Trolls, Sandberg’s characters (Little Anna,
the ghost Laban, etc.), Nils Holgersson, and
Rally. Each day the children will be served a
small meal. Toilets are available in the area.
Other
Keep in mind that the child care area is mostly
outdoors. On a sunny day, please make sure to
put sunscreen on your child and provide him/
her with a sun hat before leaving the child at
child care. If it is rainy or windy, make sure to
provide rain clothes, a warmer shirt, a hat, and
mittens.
If your child has dietary restrictions besides
lactose-free and gluten-free, please provide
it, and we will keep it separate from the other
meals.
Opening hours
Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and
Friday, 7:00am-4:00pm
You can leave your child with us for up to 3
hours at a time (while you race).
Ages: 3-8 years.
Wilderness terrain with
interesting route choices
The competition area for Stage 1 can simply
be described as beautiful Värmland wilderness.
This is a place where roads and trails grow
less and less distinct, and eventually disappear
deep into the forest. And right in the middle
of the great forest, on its highest hilltop, sits
the large cairn “Storröset”. Several of the longer
courses, in fact, have a viable route choice that
would take them directly past the cairn.
Starts Bagheera, CCS, Moelven, SIA Glass,
Team Sportia, and Tork/SCA are located a ways
up the hillside right where the nice pine forest
begins. The courses climb in the beginning
before getting to areas of open, runnable
forest covering smaller and larger hills. Route
choices can take runners across valleys with
rather difficult terrain, and finding the best
ways to climb up and down can be decisive. A
number of larger swamps can be found in the
lower parts of the terrain, while smaller and
medium-sized marshes are located up on the
hills, where the runnability is superb, and the
blueberry and rosemary bushes grow dense.
Competitors whose courses start at Starts Cramo
and Volvo CE will encounter varied terrain
with smaller hills in an area that is crisscrossed
by trails. Some recently made trails connect
the ancient paths that mostly travel from the
southwest to the northeast, and all the trails
are used heavily by the easier courses. The
shorter difficult courses will reach areas of
challenging navigation, and many class winners
are likely to be determined by difficult
controls along the final hillside.
Stage 1 courses are designed in the classic
tradition of long distance courses. On almost
every course you are guaranteed to encounter
at least one tricky longer leg, which will be
analyzed a great deal in Livelox after the race.
It will not be easy to determine whether going
around and avoiding the climb was fastest, or
whether you had enough strength left for the
shorter route along the straight line.
These courses do not suffer from the recent
trend of inflation in the number of controls,
and many runners will notice that their
courses contained significantly fewer controls
than what they are used to. During this stage,
many competitors will finish feeling like they
have orienteered really well. In this terrain, it is
not hard to find good flow, following along on
the map at full speed, without the navigation
seeming too easy. Quite simply, a great feeling!
This is Värmland’s wilderness at its best.
8.
Beautiful and pristine
nature in highly detailed
orienteering terrain
The terrain for Stage 2 is located to the east of
Stage 1 and is dominated by several large hills.
Their hilltops and upper parts of the slopes are
covered with stately mature pine forest, blueberry
bushes, and a variety of mosses and lichens.
These areas offer excellent visibility and runnability
for competitors. The open summit of one
of the larger hills used to be a gathering place for
local villagers, where they would dance and sing
during the long summer evenings. The beautiful
and detailed slopes of this hill, known traditionally
as Party Hill, will be visited by most of the courses
and will offer some of the day’s most enjoyable
orienteering challenges. The valleys separating
the large hills are often covered by younger forest
with limited visibility, where it is still possible to
maintain good speed while paying close attention
to your compass.
The early parts of the courses that start from
Starts CCS, Moelven, SIA Glass, and Team Sportia
climb up a gradual, and somewhat bland,
slope. While such a hillside is fairly simple to
navigate as long as you maintain map contact,
it is very difficult to relocate the moment you
lose focus. After passing through a green valley,
many courses will end up in a very difficult
and fun area. Here, it might be tempting for
you to stop for an extra moment or two and
just admire the glorious old forest around you,
where with a little extra luck you might even
spot a rare wood grouse. The longer courses
continue from here, going over several hills,
and featuring tricky route choice legs and
slope orienteering. The final parts of the courses
pass through some very fast terrain. On the
way back to the finish, you will cross a couple
of gradual hills and the find yourself running
at full speed on rocky trails, navigating using
green areas and cultivated fields.
The courses that start at Starts Tork/SCA,
Cramo, and Volvo CE spend a greater portion
of time in the flatter hills, but also wander a bit
into the detailed areas. A number of controls
here might seem simple at a glance, but are
surprisingly easy to miss on the somewhat
vague hillsides. The ancient trail network is
supplemented by a number of new trails that
help the easier courses make their way between
and over the hills.
Even though Stage 2 is a shortened long distance,
most courses still have some challenging
route choice legs, where difficult decisions
have to be made. However, going straight on
the line is the fastest route for many of the legs
located along the tricky hillsides. A good strategy
here would be to keep a precise bearing
while traversing the slopes (both on the way
up and down) and carefully read all the contour
and rock features as you navigate into the
control circle. And when the navigation gets a
bit simpler, don’t forget to turn up the speed!
Spectacular steep ridges that offer
challenging route choice options and beautiful views
After a fun activity day, it is time to head out to
the ancient village of Boda, where people have
lived for thousands of years. This history of this
region is evident from the many artifacts found
here, including axes from the Stone Age and
gold amulets from the Iron Age. A 200-year-old
grave right on the map contains the remains of
over 100 Swedish soldiers who died from disease
during the war against Norway and Denmark.
With height differences of up to 175 meters
from the arena to the highest parts of the map,
you might be forgiven for mistaking Boda for a
much larger mountain as you are huffing and
puffing up its slopes. Mercifully, a lot of the
climbing will be done on the way up to the
starts, which are located on top of the mountain
for the longer courses. These courses start
out on the relatively flat mountaintop, covered
with large, open marshes. The visibility is very
good, and your main obstacles will be blueberry
bushes and the soft, mossy ground underfoot.
You will experience some delightful
forest orienteering here!
Once the courses turn to the west or north,
they will enter a large area of steep hillsides
and long lines of cliffs. The longest courses
will traverse the cliffs head on, providing a
multitude of route choice options. It will be
important to find your way through and not
get stuck above or below a dangerous cliff.
The shorter courses will go parallel to the long
ridgelines heading to the north. For these
courses, the main challenges will consist of
being able to stay on the correct elevation, or
deciding to drop down to the road and attack
controls from below. The long cliff-covered
ridges are separated by thin lines of marshes,
where it is easy to make a parallel error. The
terrain here is detailed and truly wild. In the
northern part of the map, the forest opens
up, allowing the competitors who look up to
glimpse a panorama of Värmland’s forested
wilderness stretching for dozens of kilometers.
Competitors on the shorter courses will
spend a lot of time orienteering along hillsides.
The most reliable handrail features here
will be streams, vegetation boundaries, or
edges of clear-cut areas. Trails are infrequent
here, but those that do exist can be very useful.
Those competing on the shortest courses
will become well acquainted with the farmers’
fields down in the valley and will cross a
stream running along a gully towards the end
of their courses. All the courses will cross the
old railroad tracks just before the finish.
COMPETITION AREA
Lovely forest and challenging hillside orienteering
This stage will truly put your orienteering skills
to a test on Bodafjället’s extremely detailed
north slope.
By Stage 4, most competitors should have
become accustomed to orienteering in the
great forests of Värmland, which is good, since
this stage will put their technical orienteering
skills to a whole new test. This stage takes
place on Bodafjället’s extremely difficult northern
slopes, just to the East of Wednesday’s
long distance.
The walk to the start heads east from the
arena down into the valley and along the old
railroad tracks that still hold memories of this
region’s vibrant industrial past. When the railroad
was closed in 1985, the Boda station was
also torn down. You can see some remnants
from that time by visiting the Koppom station
house, which has been left intact both inside
and outside. But when the start whistle blows
for O-Ringen’s Stage 4, you’ll have no time left
to reminisce about history: challenging orienteering
will start from the very first steps of
your course. Be sure to arrive at the start focused,
or mistakes will pile up from the very
beginning.
Since the courses start out far down on the
slope, you will find yourself climbing for the
first few controls. Your heart will be pounding
and your legs will be screaming for mercy,
while your energy will be drained by the
deep blueberry bushes and the soft mosses
underfoot. Eventually the climbing will stop,
and the courses will cross the slope in every
direction: up, down, across, and in every direction
in between. The courses cross over themselves
many times, and it will be important to
keep track of where you are going and to pay
attention to all the contour and rock features.
In order to succeed here, you will have to find
the right balance between physical effort and
mental focus on the details inside the control
circle. In addition to detailed orienteering, the
courses will also present you with some route
choice problems: contour along the slope or
take a shorter route through a green patch? Or
perhaps take the extra climb early in the leg
in order to save some distance. Steep cliffs will
also need to be taken into account when planning
your routes.
After many controls, short legs, and direction
changes, you will welcome the downhill
finish. At the end of the course you will cross
the now-familiar railroad, and be sure to orienteer
all the way to the finish. This will be a
true middle distance experience in wonderful
terrain, and the feeling of self-satisfaction will
be guaranteed for those who manage to get
through their courses mistake-free.
O-RINGEN TOWN
Enjoyable and challenging orienteering,
all within a stone’s throw of O-Ringen City
The final stage’s fun and challenging orienteering
will be based out of the Rackstad Arena,
within biking distance from O-Ringen City. The
arena, that includes a motor sports stadium, is
normally home to rally and motor cross races,
but this time it will be home to the final stage of
O-Ringen’s orienteering and mountain bike orienteering
races. Runners and orienteers will be
sprinting into the finish in parallel chutes, and
the announcers will have a hard time keeping
up with all the finishing athletes.
On the way to the start competitors will
pass through the village of Rackstad, famous
for the Rackstad artist colony that lived and
worked here around 100 years ago. This group
included such well-known Swedish artists at
Gustav and Maja Fjaestad, Christian Eriksson,
Björn Ahlgrensson, and Fritz Lindström.
On all the courses the orienteering will start
right from the get-go, so hold on to your hats!
Competitors starting from starts SIA Glass
and Team Sportia will very quickly become
very familiar with the mountain Oxberget. Oxberget’s
slopes feature runnable open hilltops
interspersed with areas of blueberry and juniper
pushes and surrounded by towering pine
trees. There is a fair amount of contour and
rock features on these slopes, and the secret
to success will be the ability to find the right
elevation and read the map detail all the way
in to the control. Some areas of open forest
will allow you to increase your speed and fly
through the woods, but don’t forget to slow
down again when the terrain gets more detailed
and tricky. Many an orienteer has fallen
victim to Oxberget by running too fast and losing
map contact.
Starts Bagheera, CCS, and Moelven are
located next to OK Jösse’s picturesque clubhouse.
These woods are part of a future nature
preserve, and the forest here is grandiose, wild,
and impressive. Also wild and impressive is the
climb the competitors will face right out of
the start. Competitors on the longest courses
will climb over 150 brutal vertical meters before
reaching a more moderate plateau. Here
orienteers will encounter rosemary-covered
marshes hiding amongst tree-covered knolls.
The best strategy here is running close to the
straight line while maintaining good speed
and map contact. This wilderness area will offer
truly fun orienteering. Competitors will face
more route choice options as they leave the
mountainside. Will you climb straight down
the steep slope or run around through flatter,
faster woods? Or a little bit of both? After passing
the bottom of the ski slopes the competitors
will climb up to the top of Oxberget, and
only the strongest won’t be feeling the heavy
climb in their legs.
Mercifully, the last part of most courses will
be flatter but with slightly more undergrowth.
Some of the route choices here can prove
decisive during the chase start, and the orienteering
will be fast and challenging till the very
end. Try to keep up the speed even if the body
refuses: you are almost done! By the time you
feel the motor stadium’s asphalt under your
feet, you will be very, very tired but also full
of impressions, stories, and experiences from
a week of orienteering in beautiful Värmland
wilderness. Well done!
All vehicles traveling to O-Ringen’s competition
arenas must follow general traffic instructions
and follow all directions given by O-Ringen’s
traffic officials, as well as information provided
on oringen.se and in the program brochure. For
more detailed information, see the information
documents on travel and transport.
Bus transport to the arenas
Buses will travel from O-Ringen City to the
corresponding arenas during stages 1-4. The
bus schedule follows the competitors’ expected
start times and takes into account queues
no longer than 15 minutes. The heaviest load
of bus travelers is expected between 7:30am-
8:30am on the trip to the arenas and between
11:30am-1pm on the way back to O-Ringen
City. If you are able to travel outside of these
peak times, you will likely experience shorter
wait times. More detailed information about
bus transport and bus schedules can be found
in the travel information section of the program
brochure.
Car transport to the arenas
During stages 1-4 you can park at the arenas
for 20 SEK. A parking pass must be purchased
in advance via oringen.se or at Competitor
Services. A confirmation or registration number
must be displayed in the car’s windshield
confirmation or registration number must be
displayed in the car’s windshield at all times.
Note: You cannot pay for parking upon arrival;
a parking pass must be purchased in advance.
Bib numbers
A bib number is a competitor’s proof of start
and must be checked at the control station
before starting. Bib numbers can be picked
up at Competitor Services at O-Ringen City
until 9pm on Saturday, July 22. After that, bib
numbers must be picked up at the competition
arena. Competitors who lose their bib
numbers must purchase a new bib number at
Competitor Services.
Competitors racing in multi-day competitions
must use the same bib number during
each stage, with the exception of the first 15
starters for stage 5 in classes with chasing
starts. Those competitors pick up a new number
at the start. That number corresponds to
the competitor’s placing in the overall standings
in their class. Competitors who purchase
individual stage starts receive a new bib number
for each stare. For detailed information,
see further under the heading Competitor
Services.
GPS-units and tracking
The organizers have the right to distribute
GPS-units to any competitors in regular or elite
classes. The decision about which competitors
will carry GPS-units will be made the evening
before the race. For the selected competitors,
it is obligatory to carry GPS-units on the
course. All courses will be available for analysis
using the Livelox tool from 2pm on the competition
day, with the exception of stage 2 of
the Elite Tour (Elite sprint), which will be published
at 8pm on competition day.
Clothing and shoes
According to SOFT’s competition rules, all
competitors must wear full body covering
during their races. Clothing should not be torn
or have gaps. Socks/gaiters must be pulled
up during the entire race. Competitors are
responsible for following competition rules
regarding clothing when they come to the
start. Start officials have the right to deny start
to any competitor who does not follow these
rules. Self-service stations for taping clothing
and covering gaps are available at each start.
Shoes with full-length spikes are forbidden for
all stages. Breaking this rule leads to immediate
disqualification.
Maps
All maps were drawn between 2015-17 according
to ISOM2000 map standards and were
approved for Level 1 competition. The maps
are offset-printed and are placed in map cases.
Courses are overprinted in violet.
Classes and courses
Certain classes with expected high numbers
of competitors have been split. This applies to
classes H21 (H21-1 and H21-2), H45K (H45K-
1 and H45K-2), and H50 (H50-1 and H50-2).
Check the class you are registered for on
oringenonline.se.
Class and course data, as well as course
lengths, distance to the starts, scales, start locations,
etc. are presented in the section on
Competition Facts and Tables.
Terrain
Terrain descriptions are published together
with information for each stage.
Start
There are eight different starts. It is the competitor’s
responsibility to go to the correct
start. Information about which start corresponds
to which class, as well as distances to
the starts, is available in the section on Competition
Facts and Tables, as well as on each
competitor’s bib number.
All competitors must pass the control station
on the way to the start. Control stations
are located on the edges of the arena (see arena
maps for each stage). The following takes
place at the control stations:
• clearing your Punching Card;
• checking your Punching Card;
• self-check that the correct Punching Card is
being used. It is the competitor’s responsibility
to make sure that the Punching Card
being used is the same as the one registered
in O-Ringen’s competition system. The
competitor can do this by checking that
the number displayed in the SI unit at the
control station matches the Punching Card’s
number. If it does not match, the competitor
corrections can be made. The Red Start
is located next to the control station;
• check that you are wearing your bib number.
The Punching Card number that you have registered
can be checked at oringenonline.se.
You can change your Punching Card number
for free at any time at oringen.se/bytbricka.
The competitor is responsible for taking the
correct map. This can be done by checking
that the correct class name is printed on the
map. The class name is printed on the front of
the map. For those classes where the maps are
not shown until the start signal, the map container
has a lid with an open corner, where the
class name can be seen before the start. Competitors
in the Personal Program competitions
may be competing in a different class and on
a different course each day. It is the competitor’s
responsibility to pick up the map with the
correct course each day. The correct course for
each stage can be seen on oringenonline.se
and on the competitor’s bib number.
There will be no clothing return from the start
by the organizers.
Start methods
O-Ringen’s competitions allow four different
start methods, depending on class and competition
format. Detailed information about
the different start methods can be found in
the section “From registration to start”.
Assigned start times
Regular and Elite Tour classes have assigned
start times for stages 1-4. Classes DH10 also
have assigned start times for stage 5. Updated
start lists can be found at oringenonline.se.
Competitors will be permitted to start late up
to 30 minutes after their assigned start time
and must be done from a special start chute
marked “Sen start” / “Late start”. Race time will
be counted from the assigned start time.
Free interval starts
For short classes in the 5-Days competition,
stages 1-4 feature free interval starts. This
means that, when arriving at the start, each
competitor must select an available start time
by picking up a corresponding sticker and attaching
it to the bib numbers. The competitor
must then come up the start chute according
to the selected start times. Start intervals
within a given class are 1 minute. However, if
necessary, start officials can decide to shorten
the interval between starts within a particular
class. Start times are available between 8:30am
and 1:30pm.
The clock starts running when the competitor
punches the start. It is the competitor’s
responsibility to remember to punch the start.
Free starts
The Personal Program, Stage Start, Introduction
& Development, and Try-It-Out competitions
will have free start times for stages 1-5.
This means that the competitor can choose
when to start. No start interval will be observed.
The clock starts running when the
competitor punches the start. It is the competitor’s
responsibility to remember to punch
the start.
Chasing start
The Elite Tour and regular and short classes
running 5-Days will feature a chasing start for
stage 5. The exception to this are the HD10
classes, which will have assigned start times
for all five stages. A chasing start means that
the competitor with the lowest total time after
four stages starts first. Other competitors
in that class start later, with the start time determined
by their time difference to the class
leader’s total time. Competitors who are more
than 90 minutes behind the leader or do not
have a total four-day time start at the end of
the start field at 15-second intervals. The first
15 starters in each class that has a chasing start
must wear special bib numbers showing their
class and place in the class. These bib numbers
can be picked up at the stage 5 start.

Refershments
Water is available on the way to the start, as
well as in the competition areas for stages
1,2,3, and 5. Refershment stations that are
passed by elite classes also have sports drink.
Refershment points in the competition area
are marked on the map with a violet cup
symbol. Please dispose of used cups by putting
them in designated trash bags or placing
them upside down on designated poles by
the refreshment point.
Control descriptions
Control descriptions are printed on the map
and are also available at the start in loose form.
Control descriptions follow IOF’s most current
standards.
Controls
Controls are marked with orange-and-white
flags and are placed very close together in the
forest. Check your code numbers very carefully!
A control’s code number is located next to
the SI-unit on top of the control stand. Controls
must be visited in the correct order.
Shadowing
Competitors in the Introduction & Development,
Stage Start, Personal Program, and
Try-It-Out competitions can be shadowed by
adults or run with others. Shadowing before
your own race cannot be done by competitors
racing in ranked classes, that is DH18, DH20,
and DH21.
Punching system
SportIdent’s (SI) system for electronic timekeeping
and punching is used. All types of
Punching Cards can be used, but not touchfree
functionality is present in the SI-units.
Note! The same Punching Card can only be
used for one competitor / one start per a given
stage. This means that you cannot lend your
Punching Card to anyone else, if you use it yourself
for that stage. Any competitor who uses an
Punching Card that has already been used for a
given stage will be disqualified.
It is the competitor’s responsibility to take the
right Punching Card to the start. Your Punching
Card can be checked at the control stations located
on the way from the arena to the start. If
the Punching Card number you have does not
match the one registered in O-Ringen’s data
system, you must report to the Red Start at the
control station for changes.
You can check which Punching Card you
registered with ahead of time via oringenonline.se.
You can change your Punching Card
number for free at any time at oringen.se/bytbricka.
Keep in mind that the same Punching
Card can only be used for one start per stage.
Punching at a control
It is the competitor’s responsibility to make
sure that a sound and/or light signal was registered
from the SI-unit when punching.
Be especially careful when another competitor
is punching at the same time at a nearby SIunit,
so that you do not interpret their signals as
a confirmation of your own successful punch.
If you do not receive a sound or light signal
after repeated attempts, you must use the
manual punch located on the control stand.
Manual punching must be done in the reserve
boxes located on the map. Manual punches
must then be shown to officials at the Red Exit
after the finish.
Remember to punch at the last control that
is located near the entrance to the finish chute.
The Punching Card must be carried around
the entire course. If you do not have your
Punching Card with you at the finish, you
will be disqualified, even if you used manual
punching for all the controls you visited after
losing your Punching Card.
Competitor’s responsibility when punching
• To punch at the right control in the right
order
• To wait for a sound and/or light signal from
your own punches so the punch registers
• To use manual punching in a reserve box
on the map if no sound or light signal is observed
• To carry your Punching Card with you from
start to finish regardless of whether any controls
were punched manually
Renting Punching Cards
Punching Cards rented in advance can be
picked up at Competitor Services at O-Ringen
City until 9pm on Saturday, July 22. After
that point, rented Punching Cards can be
picked up at Competitor Services at the arenas.
Punching Cards can also be rented at any
Competitor Services location.
Returning rented Punching Cards
The competitor is responsible for returning
his or her rented Punching Card after the last
stage for which the rented Punching Card was
used. This can be done at the download station
after finishing.
Failure to return rented Punching Card
Competitors who do not return a rented
Punching Card will be charged 600 SEK. Rented
Punching Cards that are not returned will
then be registered in SportIdent’s block list
and will not be able to be used in further competitions.
Finish
The finish chute is divided into eight different
chutes. You must cross the finish line in the
chute that is indicated on your bib number.
Your finish time is taken when you punch at
the finish line, which is located about 10-15
meters before the actual finish tent.
Competitor’s responsibilities when finishing:
• To run in the correct finish chute. The name
of the chute is printed on the bib number;
• To punch the finish at the end of the chute,
regardless of whether or not you finished
the course;
• To download your Punching Card, even if
you quit the race;
• To return your rented Punching Card;
• To make sure that any manual punches are
seen by officials in the Red Exit.
Download of Punching Card
After crossing the finish line the competitor
must proceed to the download station. At the
download station the competitor receives a
printout of his or her split times. If data in the
Punching Card shows that not all correct controls
were punched, the competitor must then
go to the Red Exit in the finish tent in order to
figure out the reasons.
Special finish for DH80 and older
For classes DH80, finish time for stages 1-4
will be taken when punching the final control.
Competitors must then continue down their
finish chute, punch the finish, and download,
but the time from the last control to the finish
is not included in the racing time. For stage 5,
a normal chasing start finish is used for these
classes.
Finish procedure for stage 5 chasing starts
For classes with a chasing start for the final
stage, final placing is counted as the order in
which the finish line is crossed. The finish line is
placed approximately 15-20 meters before the
finish tent, and the finish punch is located a
few meters further. In the case of a close finish
sprint between two or more competitors in a
class, finish line judges decide in which order
the competitors should punch the finish.
Internal finish sprint races (comparisons of
split times from the last control to the finish
punch) are not recommended for stage 5, as
it may lead to confusion over the correct order
of finishing.
Finish chutes for elite classes are divided
into two tracks in order to create fairer sprint
battles. Competitors choose either the left or
right track and cannot switch once the choice
is made.
Red Exit
If data in the Punching Card shows that not
all correct controls were punched, the competitor
must then go to the Red Exit in the
finish tent in order to figure out the reasons.
If you used manual punching at any controls,
you must also go to the Red Exit, where your
punches will be checked by officials.
The Red Exit can also be used to notify
event officials of any technical problem related
to the competition, such as a non-functioning
SI-unit.
Out of bounds areas
All cultivated and private land is out of
bounds. Respect this rule before, during, and
after the competition. There are also additional
out of bounds areas marked on the map.
These marked in terrain with blue-and-yellow
streamering. If the boundary of an out of
bounds area is marked on the map with a solid
line, the corresponding streamering in terrain
is continuous. If it is marked on the map with
a dashed line, the streamering in terrain will
consist of shorter, hanging series of streamers.
If the boundary of an out of bounds area is not
marked with a distinct line, then no streamers
are placed in terrain. Crossing an out of
bounds are results in disqualification.
Streamers in terrain
Out of bounds areas are marked in terrain with
blue-and-yellow streamers. Indistinct trails are
marked in terrain with white streamers.
Results
Current results are shown at oringenonline.se.
You can use that website to easily follow your
and others’ results on a computer or mobile
device. Note that no results will be displayed
Reporting wildlife encounters
Competitors who encounter wildlife during
the competition must report these encounters
to the Viltrapport area in the back of the
finish tent. Animals that must be reported are
moose, deer, and any predators.
Toilets
Toilets are located at the arenas and on the way
to the start for all stages. For detailed information
about toilets on the way to the start, see
the overview sketch under Stage Information.
Warm outdoor showers are available at all
arenas. See corresponding arena sketches for
location.
String-O
String-O courses offer themed orienteering
along a streamered course for the youngest
kids (ages 3-8). Registration includes Punching
Card rental. This is not a competitive activity,
and every participant gets a prize each day.
You can register via oringen.se or at Competitor
Services locations at the arenas.
Childcare
Childcare is available at all competition arenas
and can be booked via oringen.se or at Competitor
Services.
Incomplete races
Competitors who quit the races must, as soon
as they are able to, pass through the finish and
have their Punching Card downloaded. If a
competitor cannot have their Punching Card
downloaded for any reason, such as an accident,
their number and/or name should be
messaged as soon as possible to finish official
Håkan Lindberg at +46 (0)70-276 01 39.
Maximum time
The maximum allowed competition time for
stages 1, 2, 3, and 5 is 2.5 hours. The maximal
allowed time for stage 4 (middle distance) is 2
hours. If you take more than the maximum time
for any stage, you are considered overtime.
Search and rescue
Event officials will organize search parties for
the people who did not download or inform
event officials that they quit the race after the
end of the competition time. Family members
and clubmates of the missing competitors are
asked to provide relevant information to event
officials in the event of a search.
Rule violations
Notifications of any rule violations that took
place must be submitted in writing to event
officials or to the Red Exit within two hours of
the end of the competition.
Protests
Protests against the event officials’ decision in
the case of a rule violation can be submitted
in writing to the Red Exit or to Competitor
Services at O-Ringen City or at the arenas no
later than two hours after the original decision
is presented.
gjort. Jag försöker hitta utvecklingsmöjligheter. Det handlar mycket om
små marginaler och sekunder hit och dit. Ska man lyckas får man
aldrig bli självsäker. Att behålla skärpan hela loppet är oftast
avgörande.
Sprint går ruskigt fort, hur långt före hinner du läsa in dig på kartan?
insats. Men jag är ödmjuk inför mina konkurrenter.

Map scales
Note that the ”Map scale” column indicates the scale for long distance races (Stages 1-3 and
Stage 5). Classes with scale 1:15000 for those stages have a 1:10000 scale for stage 4. Other clases
and courses have the same scale for all stages.
Classes in the Elite Tour have a 1:4000 scale for the sprint (Stage 2).
No results displays
This year we will not have results displays out at the arenas. Instead, results will be posted continuously
on oringenonline.se, where you can quickly go in and find your and your friends’ and
clubmates’ results. The website works equally well on computers and mobile devices.
Results lists on paper will be posted at O-Ringen Square each afternoon/evening.
Control station when you leave the arena
Control stations are used to check that each competitor uses the correct Punching Card during his
or her race. All competitors must pass the control station on the way to the start. Control stations are
located on the edges of the arena (see arena maps for each stage). It is the competitor’s responsibility
to make sure that the Punching Card being used is the same as the one registered in O-Ringen’s
competition system. The competitor can do this by checking that the number displayed in the SI
unit at the control station matches the Punching Card’s number. If it matches, the competitor can
proceed to the start. If it does not match, the competitor must go to the Red Start, where necessary
corrections can be made. The Red Start is located next to the control station.
The Punching Card number that you have registered can be checked at oringenonline.se. You
can change your Punching Card number for free at any time at oringen.se/bytbricka. If you have
the wrong chip number registered, make the change for free ahead of time so you can quickly
and easily pass through the control station on the way to the start.
Queue number system for
short classes.
Short classes will have a new start system this
year. When you arrive at the start, pick up a
sticker with your class and a selected Call-up
Time printed. Attach the sticker to the designated
box on your bib number and come up
to the start when your Call-up Time is called.
This way you do not need to wait in line, but
can instead calmly warm up while waiting for
your start time.
If you want to start outside peak times, take
