McFadden ‘took care of ordinary people’
Former school board
member valued
public service, family
Megann Horstead
Freelance Reporter
The man went to work everyday.
So said Susan McFadden
about her son, Christopher
McFadden. The Frankfort
resident and school board
member was found dead
June 29 in his home.
By trade, he was an attorney
employed by Mahoney,
Silverman & Cross law
firm. Christopher also was
a graduate of Harvard University
and Northwestern
University School of Law, a
former assistant U.S. State’s
Attorney and a former Lincoln-Way
Community High
School District 210 Board of
Education member. He most
recently served as a Frankfort
School District 157-C
Board of Education member.
“Public service was important
to him,” Susan said,
noting Christopher’s affinity
for treating each of his clients
with respect. “He was
the purest of heart, and he
never did anything for the
wrong reason.”
The world is full of people
with stories to tell and Christopher
was the type of person
who always tried to help
them, Susan said.
“If there were ever a person
who lived by the Golden
Rule, I want to meet him,”
Susan said. “That was him.”
Susan added, “He was the
type of person who took care
of ordinary people.”
“We were really close,
and I’m heartbroken,” said
Renato Mariotti, of Chicago,
Christopher’s friend. “I met
Chris when he started at the
U.S. Attorney’s Office. We
went up the ranks together.
He was a good friend. When
I needed help getting trial
Christopher McFadden poses with his wife, Sarah, and three children, (left to right) Erin, Brooke and Matt. McFadden, a
member of the Frankfort School District 157-C Board of Education, was found dead June 29 in his home. Photo submitted
experience, he gave me opportunities
to sit on cases
with him. We became close.”
Mariotti said Christopher
was a man of values and
there are not too many funny,
good-natured prosecutors
like him.
“He left his job in the city
to be closer to his kids,” he
said. “That made an impression
upon me. He left a really
good job. He made a choice
not many lawyers would
make. They can’t find a way
to create that balance.”
The impression Christopher
left was strong, said
Erin Haldorson, of Joliet,
Christopher’s friend and
a classmate at Joliet West
High School. The two were
a part of the Class of 1993.
“As a kid, a classmate
with that mix of qualities is
unforgettable,” Haldorson
said. “We had about 500
kids in our graduating class,
and I bet you would be hard
pressed to find one person
who didn’t know Chris. Chris
made school interesting. As
an adult, Chris kept his edgy
and outrageous sense of humor,
but his kind and caring
side was more at the surface.
His wife, Sarah, and their
three children were the loves
of his life, and they brought
out a softer side to him.”
Long before Christopher
came of age, he demonstrated
an interest in politics and
public service and later followed
through with that. But
it was not all work and no
play for the Frankfort man.
Christopher’s brother, Jim
McFadden, of Gainesville,
Florida, said he was grateful
for the wonderful times they
shared together.
“We did a lot of trips together,
jobs,” he said. “Actually,
we worked together umpiring
and refereeing games.”
Jim remembers the last
time the family came together
in January.
“It was at our parents’ 45th
anniversary,” he said. “We
were able to talk. Most everybody
was there. We had a
good meal, nice laughs.”
Christopher’s younger
brother, Dan McFadden, of
Minneapolis, said Christopher
will be missed.
“He was 12 years older
than me,” he said. “Christopher
was close with Jim,
and we grew closer later in
life. He took care of me. He
took me to orchards and apple
picking when mom was
busy. Being 12 years older,
he provided good advice, and
he helped me find my path in
life. He was very much like
a captain. He was good at
giving advice and opinions. I
think we bonded well.”
The story of Christopher’s
life is one that boasts of
many great highlights, Dan
said.
“I think what I admire
most is he knew all the right
things to say — whether it
was really funny or good
advice,” he said. “He could
tailor it to any situation.
Another thing is he had this
sense of optimism even in
the darkest of times that never
wavered.”
Dan wants his brother to
know how appreciative he is
to have known him.
“I hope he knows I tried to
act like him as much as I can
— super kind, generous,” he
said, noting that Christopher
often taught him lessons and
knew how to cheer him up.
“I want to make sure I keep
that alive.”
Whenever the two were in
the same town, Christopher
and Dan met up for dinner
in and around the area and
for basketball games at their
alma mater, Northwestern
University.
“That was one thing we
shared,” Dan said. “We both
shared that in common.”
Haldorson recalled the last
time she, her fiancé, Christopher
and his wife met up for
lunch.
“It had been a couple
months since we had done
lunch,” she said. “It was a typical
thing we would do … It
was typical Chris. He always
had a smile on his face.”
Haldorson said the important
thing to note is how
much Christopher loved his
family.
“I would like Chris to be
remembered by the community
for his devotion to
Sarah, Brooke, Matthew and
Erin, as well as to his parents
and brothers, Jim and Dan,”
she said.
Haldorson went on to express
how much she valued
Christopher’s friendship,
and cited his humor, intelligence
and uniqueness as his
best qualities.
“I’ve not known anyone
like him, and I never will,”
she said. “The the sad part of
losing someone like him is
you know you’ll never meet
another one like him.”
Christopher McFadden, 41,
was found dead in his home
June 29. An autopsy and
cause of death are pending.
Christopher is survived
by his parents, Susan and
Terry McFadden; his wife,
Sarah Bay McFadden; and
his three children, Brooke,
Matthew and Erin. Christopher
is also survived by two
brothers, James (Ginger) and
Daniel (Ashley); two nieces
and one nephew.

Annual 5K puts Tinley’s Fourth of July in motion
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Freedom, fun, family, fitness
and – of course – fireworks
combined to once
again make the Tinley Park-
Park District’s Fourth of
July celebration a memorable
one.
The activity-filled Independence
Day commenced
with the 27th annual Stars
and Stripes 5K, during which
everyone from elite runners
to casual walkers converged
on McCarthy Park at 8 a.m.
on July 4 to complete the 3.1
mile course. Superintendent
of Recreation Sandra Wolff-
Chevalier enjoyed that the
event brings families out to
have some fun first thing in
the morning.
“It’s a great way to start
the day,” she said. “We pay
tribute to our military who
are fighting now and have
fought in the past. That’s
what today is all about.”
More than 400 runners
pre-registered for the event
and hundreds more took advantage
of the race-day registration
option as blue skies
and sunshine assured perfect
weather for an enjoyable 5K.
Virgen Perez-Dormann, a
Woodridge resident, and her
best friend, Lynn Hoppenrath,
a Tinley Park resident,
signed up for the Stars and
Stripes event for the very
first time this year.
“It’s good to get out there
and get some exercise, and
it’s a nice day to do it, too,”
Perez-Dormann said.
Hoppenrath said that her
friend had to do a bit of persuading
to talk her into starting
off the Fourth of July
with a run, but she was eager
to tackle the course before
returning to McCarthy Park
for the evening festivities.
“I live only a few blocks
away and I know its always
Run/Walk race at 80th Avenue. Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
really awesome for families,
so we’ll be back later for the
fireworks,” she said.
Carolyn Gomez, of Tinley
Park, registered herself
and her daughters, Julia and
Katherine, for the 5K as a
way to be more active as a
family.
“We didn’t have a choice,
technically, she just kind of
signed us up,” said Katherine
Gomez with a big smile
on her face.
Although the original decision
may not have been
their own, both girls were
excited to participate.
“I am looking forward to
the run,” Julie Gomez said.
“I’ve done races in the past –
but not for a couple of years
– so it’s good to start getting
active again especially
to prepare for the marching
band that I’m in.”
Aimee Schatz, another
Tinley Park resident, loved
the opportunity to run with
her three sons, Declan, 11,
Brendan, 10, and Gavin, 8.
“We actually like to run
right here around the lake
at McCarthy Park,” Aimee
said. “We also run the Orland
Grassland and we like
the loop around the rec center.
If you’re just looking for
some speed work training,
it’s a good consistent place
to run.”
Although everyone who
took advantage of the beautiful
weather and participated
in the event can consider
themselves a winner,
a few runners completed
the course with impressive
times.
Matthew Gagen, of Lemont,
came in first place overall
in the men’s division with
a time of 17 minutes and 1
second. Tinley Park’s Samantha
Maciaga took home
the women’s top honor, finishing
in 19:29 and 10th
overall.
The day-long celebration
was only just getting started
as runners crossed the finish
line. Beginning at 4 p.m., activities
included a horseshoe
tournament, penny carnival,
inflatables, crafts, bingo
and the ever-popular sandy
candy station which offered
fun for the entire family.
Entertainment was provided
by Peter Oprisko, Bruce Korosa’s
Polka Band, Loopy
& Cazoo the Clowns, Dave
Fleming and the main stage
headliners, Shout Out. All
furthered the good vibes before
the Grand Finale Fireworks
Extravaganza closed
out the night.
To cap off the perfect patriotic
day, the Tinley Park-
Park District gave away a
trip to one lucky family in
honor of the 50th anniversary
of the organization.
“The winner can pick any
National Park they wish –
they’ll receive a voucher –
so that’s something a little
extra special for this year,”
Wolff-Chevalier said.
Men’s first-place finisher Matt Gagen, of Lemont, crosses
the finish line.
For Chicago resident Helen
Baldwin, turning 100 was
a time of merriment.
“I thank the Lord for all
the good things he gives
us,” she said. “We thank
Him. We’ll go around there,
and we’ll help other people.
Thank you, Lord, for all the
wonderful things you give
Helen said seeing the way
her friends come together to
celebrate her birthday meant
everything to her.
“That [is] wonderful,” she
said.
To kickoff the festivities,
those in attendance took
part in chair exercises to the
sounds of music.
The Rev. Jerry Gunderson
went on to lead guests in
prayer and followed with a
sermon.
Baldwin echoed the sentiments
asked, motioning toward a
self portrait she had completed.
“That’s me when I was so
beautiful,” Helen continued.
The Seniors Club manager
Andrea Kirkton said she has
known Helen for the last six
years.
“She’s still just as vibrant
as when I met her,” Kirkton
said. “She enjoys herself
everyday — funny, loving
[woman].”
Kirkton credits Helen’s
son, Jonathon, for helping
her to live a long, happy life.
“He’s taken care of her for
many, many years,” she said.
“Her husband died – I want
to say – in 2010. Jonathon
has been taking care of her
for a while, and God. She
loves her God. He’s been
very good.”
Helen stays active at The
Seniors Club by playing
bingo, singing and having
fun on a daily basis with her
friends at the club.
“Like I said, she’s doing
well and she’s upright,”
Linda said. “She’s doing
well because she goes to
The Seniors Club, and she is
around people. She always
has something to do. I never
would’ve thought she’d turn
100.”

New Tinley yoga studio offers good vibes for all
Brittany Kapa, Assistant Editor
Patricia Paloumpis said
that in the four years leading
up to opening Vibe Yoga
Room the path was never
straight.
Having worn many different
hats throughout her life,
the 51-year-old had a vision
of what the open space next
to her husband’s chiropractic
business, Beyer Natural
Health Solutions, would
look like.
That vision sprung to
life June 25 as Paloumpis
opened Vibe Yoga Room.
Having noticed a lack of a
yoga studios in Tinley Park,
Paloumpis “super charged”
her desire to get Vibe Yoga
Room up and running.
“I just had a really strong
urge to make yoga more
accessible,” Paloumpis
said. “I wanted to kind of
cut through everything and
make it a little more basic
and accessible.”
She added that she wanted
Vibe to be a place where
someone who is experienced
in yoga could come and get
a really good practice. At the
same time, she wanted the
space to be friendly enough,
so those new to yoga would
feel comfortable starting
their journey at Vibe.
“I’m really enjoying meeting
all of the Tinley Park yogis,”
Paloumpis said about
the studio’s first week of
business. “They are coming
out of the woodwork.
They are finding us and they
are coming in and saying,
‘Thank you for opening up.’
“What I would love this to
bring is a sense of renewal,
health and just that whole
happy, good vibe.”
That is where the name has
come from. When Paloumpis
was struggling to find a
name for her studio, she had
been talking about the different
aspects of the business
with her husband. Each time
she described a section of the
Vibe Yoga Room
Tinley Park
business – whether it was the
space’s décor or the teachers
– she would describe it as a
“vibe.”
‘We offer ourselves’
Throughout the planning
process for the studio, there
was one aspect of the business
that just seemed to fall
in place for Paloumpis: her
staff.
Having started her relationship
with yoga in 2004,
and after gaining her teaching
certificate in 2014,
Paloumpis has developed
lasting relationships with
other instructors.
Sherie Sloane, of Mokena,
found yoga after a taekwondo
injury. The two met
at another studio and now
Sloane teaches a few classes
at Vibe.
“We practiced at another
studio together and then we
developed this community
and became friends,” Sloane
said about her relationship
with not only Paloumpis but
also Jenn Christiansen, another
instructor at the studio.
“That’s why I think what’s
good with Vibe is the foundation
of the people working
together. There is a bond,
and I think that will make
this studio stand out.”
Christiansen adds that they
are also a humble bunch of
individuals because they all
realize they have not learned
everything there is to know
about the practice of yoga.
“We offer ourselves – a
very authentic self,” Christiansen
said. “We share
our own practice and what
we’ve learned from our own
experience.
“Yoga is more than just
The Evolution of a POse
Vasisthasana: Side Plank
Strengthens: core, upper-body and balance
Health benefits: By strengthening the intercostal muscles (several muscles that run along the body’s ribs) in
conjunction with breathing, the pose can help to strengthen the internal muscles around vital organs, such as the
lungs.
Vibe instructor Jenn Christiansen models the progression of one yoga move starting from a beginner pose to an
advanced version of the same pose.
1. Beginners
2. Full expression
3. Variation
downward facing dog. It’s
not just about the practice.
For me, I come from a traumatic
background, so it’s
been a very healing practice
for me.”
Christiansen and Sloane
both stressed that everyone
starts somewhere and beginners
should not expect to be
able to do each pose perfectly
upon their first try.
“When you fail at something,
you don’t pack up
your bags and leave,” she
added. “The seed is planted,
hopefully, and you can laugh
at yourself. We’re not perfect.
We’re all human.”
Sloane said that even
something as simple as
breathing can be considered
a practice of yoga.
“I really feel like yoga is
a life practice,” Sloane said.
“If you can breathe, you
can do yoga. The first tenet
of yoga is breathing practice.
So, if you’re just being
mindful in your car, I would
call that yoga.”
‘A happy mother is a happy
family’
Yogis of all levels can find
a class that suits their skills.
Vibe also offers a service
called “Kids in Queue.” Certain
classes will have a corresponding
“Kids in Queue”
4. Advanced
time where parents can drop
off their little ones to be
watched by the studio’s CPR
certified attendant.
“A happy mother is a happy
family,” Paloumpis jokes
of why she wanted to offer
photos by Brittany Kapa/22nd Century Media
that service.
She wanted to give moms
and dads an hour that would
not only be good for their
bodies but the minds, as
well, by creating a stressfree
environment for all.
The tinley Junction’s
Standout Student
Sponsored by Marquette Bank
Tyler Milhouse,
Lincoln-Way East
High School
incoming junior
Tyler Milhouse was chosen
as this week’s Standout
Student for her academic
excellence
What is one essential you
must have when studying
and why?
I often find I am most
successful when studying if
I have a game plan. Being
aware of my intentions with
a study session, such as how
long I will study, what subjects
I will study, and the order
in which I will study are
all essential to my success.
What do you like to do when
not in school or studying?
I like to participate in athletics,
particularly running.
I run on my school’s track
and cross country team. I
enjoy becoming strong mentally
and faster physically
throughout both seasons and
pushing myself to achieve a
personal record.
What is your dream job and
why?
My dream job would be
to work for myself and to
help others. I like the idea
of being the boss lady and
I strongly believe in world
improvement. I would like
to manage and own several
free clinic locations throughout
the world.
Photo submitted
Whom do you look up to and
why?
My parents (Tina and Wilber
Milhouse), whom I both
respect and admire. Along
with motivating and challenging
me, they have imparted
values and countless
important life lessons that I
am thankful for. They both
embody a strong sense of responsibility
and accountability
with resilience that they
have developed in me.
Who is your favorite teacher
and why?
I have been fortunate to
have many great teachers
who have all been special to
me in their own way. Nonetheless,
my favorite is my
eighth-grade English teacher
and seventh-grade basketball
coach, Ms. Canter (Summit
Hill Junior High). She pushed
me when she saw that I was
not being challenged to my
full capacity. She empowered
me to see the beauty in my
writing and writing itself.
She taught beyond the grammatical
facts and memorization
of vocab words. Plus, we
think along the same lines.
What is your favorite class
and why?
English is my favorite
class, and kind of always
has been. It has encouraged
me to become analytically
minded, and offered me
new, varying perspectives.
English has actively contributed
to who I am. It has
helped develop my ideas and
beliefs, enabling me to grow
each year both intellectually
as well as theoretically.
What is one thing that
stands out about your
school?
We are Lincoln-Way
united. I think that the
sense of community within
my school is one thing that
stands out about it. I love the
friendliness among both the
students and faculty. I recognize
Lincoln-Way East as
my home away from home.
If you could change one thing
about school, what would
it be?
If I could change one thing
about my school, I would
offer the option of having
lunch, study hall or even
class outside on a nice day to
have a break from the normal
routine of the school day.
What is your best memory
from school?
Although this is not my
fondest memory, during my
freshman year in honors biology
— I think it was our
last project of the year — my
teacher announced that we
would be doing dissection
on an actual rat. The day the
rats arrived in the classroom,
my fear of rodents was confirmed.
A few tears rolled
down my cheek because I
feared having to touch it, not
to mention being surrounded
by them in class. I ended up
doing an online simulation
in the comfort of the hallway
that week.
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
New Lenox native earns big
role with FSU softball as
freshman
Dani Morgan made a
splash right away as an athlete,
when she entered Lincoln-Way
West as a freshman
in 2013.
Unfortunately for the Warriors,
Morgan’s father got a
job transfer in 2015. So, she
did not get to attend her senior
year at the school.
But that certainly did not
slow her athletic endeavors.
NIGHT
Morgan recently completed
her freshman softball season
at Florida State University,
where she stepped in right
away, becoming a starter and
key contributor on one of the
best softball programs in the
nation.
Morgan, who is majoring
in psychology, played in 62
games, starting 58 of them in
left field. She finished with a
.318 batting average, while
scoring 42 runs and knocking
in 36. Morgan was 9-for-9 in
stolen bases and had 20 extra
base hits — including 11
doubles and five home runs.
“When I moved to Georgia,
I had to start over to prove
myself again,” Morgan said.
“Then, I went to FSU and had
to prove myself again. But my
coaches at FSU are amazing.
They make you want to play
softball. I worked hard and
did what I could do.”
“There’s moments where
I’m driving through the canyon,
it’s 8:30 in the morning,”
she said. “The sun
mountains and the haze, and
then you pull around that
It’s one of moments where
Those photos on the Tinley
I have also seen Tinley
a little low on photos for
highlight a resident’s pet by
sharing their name, owner’s
We also have been running
Letters to the editor
‘Where are all the flags?’
My parents moved to
Tinley Park in 1944, I
have always loved Tinley
Park, I went to Arbor Park
Elementary School while
it was on 159th street near
Cicero. When I got married,
I moved into Chicago to be
closer to work but when I
started my family I moved
back to Tinley Park because
I truly believe “It’s a great
place to raise a family.”
I go down 159th a lot and
when I see all the flags they
have in Oak Forest, it gives
me chill bumps. Then when I
get into Tinley Park, “Where
were all the flags?” My husband
was in World War II and
so were a lot of my friends. I
have nieces, nephews, uncles
and my two brothers that
were in the service.
“Where are all the
flags???”
All I counted were six
flags going down Oak Park
Ave. I was so disappointed,
I called utilities (because
that’s where I was told to
call) they told me the flags
block the view of the street
signs, “they never stopped
those flags from flying before,
and they were too
high.”
I was also told there are
a lot of pretty flower baskets
hanging along the way.
Well, our service men and
women didn’t fight for the
flower baskets. They fought
for the freedom of our country
and the flag represents
our country. We should be
proud to fly our flag and
the only time I see where
the whole U.S.A. proudly
flies our flag to show our
independence is on Independence
day. After my call
they put up some more flags,
I think I counted 21 and that
was counting the flags we
always see by the banks or
train station and VFW. Nothing
from 171st Street to the
train station. Nothing.
It’s very disheartening
when our town can’t show
our service people how
much we appreciate the men
& women that took time out
of their lives, and the families
that lost loved ones so
we could have our freedom.
You would think that being
a life long resident of Tinley
Park, the Mayor would show
his pride, not just in Tinley
Park, but in our country and
our service men an women.
‘125 Amplified’ reflects on Village of Tinley Park’s rich history
Brittany Kapa, Assistant Editor
The Village of Tinley Park
has developed a long and
rich history over the last 125
years.
From humble German
roots, the original village
of New Bremen eventually
changed its name to Tinley
Park in honor of Samuel
Tinley, the first train station
attendant. In June of 1892,
those in the town voted to
incorporate and since that
point, the village has been
known as Tinley Park.
Lifelong residents, such
as Brad Bettenhausen, have
seen firsthand the growth
Tinley Park has made
throughout the last few decades.
“In my youth, the population
of the town was about
6,000 people,” Bettenhausen
wrote in an email to The
Junction. “Harlem Avenue
was not a through street until
the late 1960s. It existed
for short stretches between
183rd Street and 143rd
Street.”
That same train station
Samuel Tinley worked at
has helped to develop Tinley
Park from a small village
of less than 1,000 people at
the time of its incorporation
in 1892 to one that has over
60,000 residents.
“We now have a lot more
choices in styles and sizes of
homes,” Bettenhausen said
about the town’s growth.
“We also have a lot of shopping
opportunities as well as
a lot more opportunities for
employment within the community
than [what] existed
when I was younger.”
They say it’s your birthday
To honor those vast
changes, the Village of Tinley
Park is changing up this
year’s annual block party.
Originally known as the
Caribbean Block Party, the
World War II soldiers gathered at Saenger Hall in 1946 for a
night of music and dancing in honor of their service.
summer bash held along Oak
Park Avenue has provided
entertainment for the young
and old.
However, this particular
theme did not seem to fitting
of Tinley’s milestone.
Thus, the idea for “125
Amplified” was born.
“125 Amplified” is open
to the public, and festivities
are to take place from noon
to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 16.
“Combining a birthday
and a Caribbean theme
doesn’t really make a whole
lot of sense,” said Vicki Sanchez,
special events coordinator.
“We wanted to do
something special to mark
the 125th birthday [of the
Village].”
The name is indicative of
two things near and dear to
Tinley’s heart – the first being
the village’s history. The
the second is a nod to the village’s
involvement in music
and entertainment.
“125 Amplified” also joins
in on the village’s recent effort
to re-brand Tinley Park
into a music center. Sanchez
said that the timing of the
two events just fit together
well.
“We’ll have some new
brand-awareness banners
and things like that, so to be
able to push that out at the
same time as [the celebration]
is great,” Sanchez said.
Many local businesses
around Tinley Park are lending
their services to providing
interesting and musicthemed
activities throughout
the day.
“All of our Tinley Park
dance studios are involved,”
Sanchez said, adding every
studio has a special activity
for children to partake in.
Inflatables, crafts and a
zip line – which costs $8 to
participate – are just some of
the fun activities planned for
the younger residents.
Interactive activities will
also be available at the party.
Sanchez added one fun
activity, which is new this
year, will get a little help
from local boutique salon,
The Station. Residents can
get a rockstar hairstyle and
pose for photos in front of a
green screen that will reflect
a superimposed concert.
And that’s just the beginning.
“We have House of Music
that will be doing a drum circles
from noon until 4 p.m.,”
Sanchez said. “That is something
else that is totally different
that we’ve never done
before.
“What’s kind of cool about
that, too, is you don’t have
to have any musical experience
at all. So, you can just
jump in and [House of Music
staff] will instruct you on
what to do with the different
percussion instruments that
they’re bringing.”
Plenty of live music will
round out the day’s activities.
The Illinois Battle of
This 1943 photo depicts a mound of metal that was collected from a metal drive as part of
the ongoing efforts of Tinley Park residents to help during World War II. Photos Submitted
the Bands will be hosting
its Tinley Park leg of the
competition for local youth
bands. Other performers
include Midnight, Blooze
Brother and Bella Cain. Former
“American Idol” contestant
Gina Glocksen is to
perform her act as the Gina
Glocksen Band.
Every detail has been
thought of – even down to
the decorations. With the
help of the historical society,
Sanchez was able to feature
photos that showcase the
great musical talent that has
set foot in Tinley Park over
the years.
“The historical society
was awesome sending us
pictures,” she said. “I specifically
asked for music related
pictures to use throughout
our branding process and for
various projects.”
And those images can be
seen printed on balloons
near the stage.
“What I’m excited about
is trying to get other people
excited about the fact that
Tinley Park is 125 years
old,” Sanchez said. “It’s really
something to celebrate.”
WE SOLVE FOR X
The interest rate and Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is accurate as of 3/6/17. This offer is valid on new
consumer CDs (including Individual Retirement Accounts) and commercial CDs, except public funds,
opened between 3/6/17-6/30/17. The minimum balance to open the account and earn the stated APY
is $1,000. The maximum amount you may deposit is $500,000. Promotional rate is limited to
$500,000 per depositor. The APY assumes that interest remains on deposit until maturity. Fees or a
maturity, the CD will automatically renew as a 12-month CD and the interest rate and APY upon
renewal will be the same that we offer on the maturity date for new CDs with the same term and
features. Offer is subject to change, and may be withdrawn, at any time without notice. Additional
OPPORTUNITY
Pride of Workmanship - Pride of Ownership at Brookside Meadows
For over 45 years Crana Homes commitment to quality
and customer satisfaction has been summed up as “Pride
of Workmanship - Pride of Ownership.” These words are
the foundation of every one of the hundreds and hundreds
of new homes that Crana Homes has developed into
amazing communities. Now the luxury townhomes of
Brookside Meadows in Tinley Park is where home buyers
once again find unrivaled quality in a Crana home.
But pride in workmanship is only the first part of the
promise. The second part is pride of ownership - the
key to customer satisfaction. Crana Homes meets with
buyers to discuss what they need and want in a new
home. Working closely with customers gives the insight
and understanding needed for the kind of customer
satisfaction that lasts long after a home is finished. This
makes a Crana home not only attractive and comfortable
but also a great investment.
Today, Crana Homes’ legacy culminates in Brookside
Meadows’ newly opened Phase II, a community of awardwinning,
energy-efficient homes that sets the standard for
luxury townhomes. Whether you’re a first time buyer, an
upsizer, downsizer or just looking for a great place to raise
a family early buyers still have plenty of choices available
in the latest and final phase of this quiet, secluded section
in Tinley Park.
The split level Fahan II is a beautiful 3,303 total square
foot home (including a 1,216’ basement). It has three
bedrooms and two-and-half baths with a two-car garage
and a cement driveway. A fourth bedroom is optional. The
large open kitchen has custom maple cabinets and elegant
granite countertops. Maple cabinets are also found in the
batherooms and laundry room. Overlooking the great
room is regal loft. Gorgeous oak is used on floors, doors,
railings and trim throughout. Ceramic floor tile covers
the foyer and the bathrooms - which also feature cultured
marble vanity tops. A full walkout or lookout basement
and a deck is included.
Another award-winning design is the Lennan II, a
comfortable two/three bedroom split level home that
includes most of the features of the Fahan II except the
spacious master suite is located on the upper level and
a cathedral ceiling is available as an option. The Lennan
II totals 3,167 square feet of space (including a 1,049’
basement) and a two-car garage with cement driveway.
With Phase II prices holding in the upper-$200s (including
site), buyers are finding some extra room for options like
a fireplace, coffered ceilings, skylights and a soaker tub
in the master bath.
All homes at Brookside Meadows include cost-efficient,
energy-saving features like a high-efficiency furnace and
Lo-E glass installed throughout. Other ‘green’ features
include an Energy Miser hot water heater, vented soffits,
1.75” insulated entrance doors, energy efficient appliances
and Tuff-R insulated wall sheathing. Underground utilities
and sprinklers are standard and Lake Michigan water is
on tap.
What’s more, Brookside Meadows’ location is a winner!
Tinley Park has been rated as “The Best Place in America
to Raise a Family,” by Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Tinley
lives up to that title with: highly rated schools, dozens
of parks and playgrounds, proximity to stores and malls
plus all the recreation, cultural events and dining of a
neighboring world class city. Major highways and the
Metra commuter line are just minutes away.
See for yourself why ‘Pride of Workmanship, Pride of
Ownership’ are words to live by in every Crana Home.
Choice sites are still available for early buyers. The
Sales Center and fully decorated model homes are open
Monday through Thursday from 10:00am to 4:00pm;
Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4:00pm; and Friday
by appointment. From I-80, exit La Grange Road south
for just under two miles to La Porte Road and turn east for
one-half mile. If using a GPS, enter the address: 19839
Mulroy Circle, Tinley Park, IL.
Build and Move into Your New Home from the low $200s
With Lincoln-Way Schools at Prairie Trails in Manhattan
Distinctive Home Builders provides homeowners the
highest quality home on the market
Distinctive Home Builders
continues to add high quality
homes to the Manhattan
landscape at Prairie Trails; its
latest new home community,
located within the highly-regarded
Lincoln-Way School
District. Many families are
happy to call Prairie Trails
home and are pleased that
Distinctive is able to deliver a
new home with zero punch list
items in 90 days. Before closing,
each home undergoes an
industry-leading checklist that
ensures each home measures
up to the firm’s high quality
standards.
“Actually our last average
was 81 working days from excavation
to receiving a home
occupancy permit - without
sacrificing quality,” said Bryan
Nooner, president of Distinctive
Home Builders. “Everyone
at the company works
extremely hard to continually
achieve this delivery goal for
our homeowners. Our three
decades building homes provides
this efficient construction
system. Many of our
skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company for
Recently closed Prairie Trails Arbor Model
over 20 years. We also take
pride on having excellent communicators
throughout our
organization. This translates
into a positive buying and
building experience for our
homeowners and one of the
highest referral rates in the industry
for Distinctive.”
In all, buyers can select
from 13 ranch, split-level and
six two-story single-family
home styles; each offering
three to eight different exterior
elevations. The three- to
four-bedroom homes feature
two to two-and-one-half
baths, two- to three-car garages
and a family room, all in
approximately 1,600 to over
3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included
in most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new
home truly personalized to
suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of
the first floor; custom maple
cabinets; ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen,
baths and foyer; genuine wood
trim and doors; granite countertops
and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails. All home sites at Prairie
Trails can accommodate a
three-car garage; a very important
amenity to the Manhattan
homebuyer, according
to Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails we wanted to provide
the best new home value for
the dollar and we feel with
offering Premium Standard
Features that we do just that.
So why wait? This is truly the
best time to build your dream
home!”
Distinctive offers custom
maple kitchen cabinets featuring
solid wood construction
(no particle board), have solid
wood drawers with dove tail
joints, which is very rare in the
marketplace. “When you buy
a new home from Distinctive,
you truly are receiving custom
made cabinets in every home
we sell no matter what the
price range,” noted Nooner.
Nooner added that all
homes are highly energy efficient.
Every home built will
have upgraded wall and ceiling
insulation values with
Recently closed Prairie Trails Arbor Model
energy efficient windows and
high efficiency furnaces. Before
homeowners move into
their new home, Distinctive
Home Builders conducts a
blower door test that pressurizes
the home to ensure that
each home passes a set of very
stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
Typically a wide variety of
homes are available to tour
that include ranch and twostory
homes.
Distinctive is also offering
a brand new home, the
Stonegrove, a 3,000 square
foot open concept home with a
split foyer entry, formal living
and dining rooms, a two-story
great room, four bedrooms
and an upstairs laundry room.
Distinctive also offers Appbased
technology allowing its
homeowners to be updated
on the progress of their new
home 24 hours a day, seven
days a week at the touch of a
button.
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live featuring a
20-acre lake on site, as well
as direct access to the 22-mile
Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through
many neighboring communities
and links to many other
popular trails. The Manhattan
Metra station is also nearby.
Besides Prairie Trails, Distinctive
Home Builders has
built hundreds of homes
throughout Manhattan in the
Butternut Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well
as thousands in the Will and
south Cook county areas over
the past 30 years.
How did you get started
playing baseball?
I just watched it a lot and
I started liking it and then I
started playing it.
What do you like about
the game?
What I like about it is that
I get to play with friends
and that I’m good at it. I just
stuck with it.
You play three
positions, which is your
favorite to play?
Pitcher. It’s fun and it’s
fun to learn new pitches. It’s
fun to have competition; it’s
fun to strike people out.
What is your favorite
pitch to throw out?
Probably a curve ball. My
coach that taught me was a
college pitcher.
What is the most
challenging part about
playing baseball?
The tournaments we’ve
gone through. Our coach
puts us into really tough
tournaments with really, really
good teams.
If you could travel
anywhere in the world,
where would you go?
Hawaii. I have never been
lives out there.
What is your favorite
TV show?
I don’t really watch TV
The Blaze Academy had
the Blaze had played outnumbered
on the field, as
they struggled to field a full
hard work from all the boys
although only one run was
earned. Thunderbolts pitchers
Max Smyth and Ryan
McGuire allowed only two
of Providence’s first 10 batters
to reach base, one on a hit
batsman and one on a walk
that was immediately erased
with a pickoff.
Providence sent 12 batters
to the plate in the fourth, starting
with Anderson’s leadoff
single. Walsh drove in two
runs on a double, Ben Vitas
doubled home a run, Mucha
had a two-run single, and Tyler
Struck had an RBI single.
Anderson drove in two runs
with an opposite-field double
in his second at-bat of
the inning, and he scored on
Landy’s RBI single.
Andrew drew a basesloaded
walk in the fourth and
another in the fifth to pull
within 9-5.
Providence went up 12-5
in the sixth inning when Jake
Hesselmann had a pinch-hit
RBI single, Landy had an
RBI sacrifice fly, and Brennan
Geers scored on an error.
In the seventh inning, Andrew
loaded the bases for
the third time in four innings
but managed only three runs.
Weert had an RBI double and
scored on a fielder’s choice,
and Nolan Fazel drove in
one run on a single to end the
scoring at 12-8.
“You take away those two
bad innings, and we’re right
there,” DeHaan said. “Our
kids battled again and again.
I’m proud of the kids who
came out to play and competed.”
Allegretti
From Page 39
ly at strong side guard.
“Last year taught me that
the more I know about the offense,
the better I’d be,” Allegretti
said. “I felt like last
year was a huge opportunity
for me. It was a blast.”
He also got a taste of playing
center again, starting at
the spot in a game against
Murray State when starter
Joe Spencer was out with an
injury.
Allegretti credits Spencer
and others for learning not
only the physical aspects of
college football but also the
mental, more leadership-involved
traits.
“The first three years, I got
to play under guys like Mike
Heitz and Alex Hill, and
Teddy Karras for two years
and Joe Spencer,” he said. “I
got to learn from all of those
dudes. I think I’ve learned
a lot about leadership from
them.”
And those leadership lessons
were invaluable, especially
considering the turnover
the Illini have had on
the coaching staff during Allegretti’s
time at the school.
“I got here, and the first
three years we had three
[different] head coaches,” he
said. “It was tough, and not
what I expected obviously.
But after the last coaching
change and Coach [Lovie]
Smith came in, I feel like
the whole team [thought] the
athletic department found us
a coach we can win with.”
Allegretti said the biggest
difference since Smith took
over the program is the way
the program is run.
“It’s run like an NFL program,”
he said. “We come in,
go to film, get treatment and
go to practice. It’s a very efficient
program, and we don’t
waste any time. If we are at
the stadium, we are doing
something productive.”
Going into this season, Allegretti
is slated for a bigger
role on the offensive line —
something he’s ready for.
“The Big Ten is a tough
conference, a physical conference,”
he said. “No matter
what team you are or where
your program is at, if you
want to win a single game in
the Big Ten, it is going to be
hard.
“But I think we have the
ability to go out there and
win a lot of games this year.
We have a lot of young kids,
and a lot of kids who are
stepping up.”
He pointed to running
back Kendrick Foster and
quarterback Chayce Crouch,
who he said has stepped up
to be a leader on the team.
“He’s a playmaker,” Allegretti
said of the young quarterback.
He said he also realizes
with his age and experience,
he needs to be a good example
for his younger teammates.
But he also has high
expectations for the year.
“The No. 1 most important
thing we have to do is play
hard and physical, no matter
what,” he said. “If you
go out there and have a brain
freeze, come off the ball and
still play hard. When we go
back and watch film on Sunday,
you can’t say, ‘I took
that play off.’ We have the
players we need and we have
the talent. But if we take
plays off, we’re not going to
win the games we need to.
We need every single player,
11 at a time, and everyone on
the sidelines to be engaged
and give 100 percent effort.”
A bright future
Allegretti recognizes his
playing career at Illinois is
winding down, but his goal
still remains to play the
game as long as he possibly
can.
“Whether it is another
two, five or 10 years …
whatever it is, I want to play
as long as I can,” Allegretti
said. “I absolutely love the
sport. There’s nothing like
competing at this level.”
But that doesn’t mean it is
his only option. He said he
will graduate in December
with an accounting degree,
and he has his sights set on
perhaps pursuing a master’s
degree.
“Whenever football ends,
I’m really excited to get into
the business world,” he said.

Winning the game was
one of Koepke’s top memorable
moments from the trip,
he said. He had his first interception
at the college
level and played on special
teams in the 33-6 win that
saw IWU jump out to a 33-0
lead.
Despite the relatively easy
win, Waseda University is
not a no-name team in Japan.
It was last season’s runner-up
in Japan’s Division I,
the top group, and has been
playing American football
since 1934.
IWU coach Norm Eash
compared Waseda to an
NCAA Division II or top
Division III team based on
film, according to a news
release. IWU plays in Division
III.
“They were at a college
level, just not as good as I
thought they would be,” Koepke
said.
He described the game
atmosphere as “pretty rowdy”
with fans cheering and
conductors leading chants
during the game. After the
game, the teams got to meet
each other and socialize during
a barbecue.
The trip helped in building
team chemistry, and Koepke
said he’ll remember spending
time on and off the field
An off-field highlight of
the trip for Koepke was going
to the top of the Tokyo
Sky Tree, the tallest tower
in the world (2,080 feet), to
view Tokyo at night. There
was a team boat cruise
around Tokyo, as well as
time to roam around the city
to experience its night life.
“I knew I was going to
have a good time,” Koepke
said. “Being there was so
surreal. It was just a fun
time. It blew past my expectations.
Just experiencing
somebody else’s culture and
seeing what Japan has.”
Koepke said the trip has
made him more interested
in visiting a foreign country
again, although he’d choose
somewhere other than Japan
just to experience something
new. He had only been out
of the country once before,
when he went to Mexico for
an aunt’s wedding, he said.
Koepke and some fellow
football players took a Business
of Asia class at IWU before
going on the trip. Since
they were on campus for football
practice, the three-week
class in May provided them
with an introduction to Japan,
the country’s history and basic
things to know for travel
there, among other topics.
Preparation for the game
required two days of practice
while adjusting their
bodies after a flight that took
approximately 14 hours and
covered 6,338 miles, according
to an IWU news release.
The team left on May 31 and
returned on June 8.
This was IWU’s sixth
overseas trip since 1996, and
the first to Asia. The previous
five trips were to Europe.
Koepke is preparing for
a potentially larger role
in 2017. He played in one
game as a freshman in 2016
and recorded three tackles.
Practice begins Aug. 10,
he said, and IWU’s first
game is Sept. 2 against University
of Wisconsin-Whitewater,
which has won six
Division III championships
from 2007 to 2014.
Andrew hones pitching skills in loss against Providence
Runs looked like they
would be at a premium – until
they were not.
Providence Catholic beat
Andrew in a high-scoring,
12-8 affair, as a pitching duel
turned into a series of offensive
outbursts on Thursday,
July 6, in Tinley Park. The
Celtics’ nine-run fourth inning
proved to be the difference.
Frankfort Square resident
Logan Anderson, a rising senior,
was one of four Celtics
who drove in two runs. Zack
Landy, Jake Walsh and Jake
Mucha also drove in two runs
apiece.
“I’m always working on
my offense,” Anderson said.
“Before two strikes, I try to
hit a ball as far as I can. Then,
really, just take the ball where
it’s pitched, try not to pull a
ball that I should be hitting to
the right side.”
Anderson’s focus has also
been on improving his defense,
although he was the
designated hitter against Andrew.
He is expecting to start
full-time at third base next
spring, after he played third
base and rotated between first
base and catcher last year because
of injuries.
“It’s just a calmness,” Anderson
said. “Last year, I was
iffy at third base to start the
year. Then, I got in a groove
as I started listening to my
coaches. Now, there’s no
nerves, because I’ve been in
the footsteps. I’m just focusing
on my fielding to make
sure I get my feet in the right
position to make the play.”
Andrew’s Zach Weert and
Kevin Bushnell led the Thunderbolts
with two hits each.
Weert went 2-for-4 with a
double, two runs and one
RBI. Bushnell went 2-for-4
with one run scored.
Bushnell, a rising senior, is
expected to be a big part of
Andrew’s plan for success in
the coming spring. He is expected
to replace power hitter
Joe Oswald at first base after
spending time as the designated
hitter last year.
“Joe taught me a lot
throughout last year,” Bushnell
said. “He’s a great leader.
That’s going to be hard to replace
that. I know I have to be
a leader, and my team needs
me out there. He’s taught me
a lot with my swing. We went
out and hit a lot. He’s been a
great teacher.”
Bushnell said he tries to
take 100 swings every day.
He also has been working on
his defense by taking ground
balls and fly balls. Andrew
coach Dave DeHaan said
likes the development he has
seen from Bushnell during
the summer.
“He’s been a solid hitter,”
DeHaan said. “He’s worked
on his defense. He had some
big hits in the spring, and
we’re excited to have him
back. We need him to be consistent
at the plate and drive
the ball. We want power.
That’s what we got from Joe
[Oswald] last year. We’re
looking for someone to drive
guys in.”
While the offense stole the
show, pitching owned the
early innings. Andrew scored
three runs, building a 3-0
lead through three innings,
competitive level. But it was fun, and
I got to experience something new.”
For Allegretti, the willingness to
switch sides of the ball was innate.
“It’s just the way I was raised,” he
said. “My mom and pops taught me
to do whatever I could do to get onto
the field and do whatever I could for
the team.”
Last year, however, Allegretti was
able to get back to what he does best
— protecting the quarterback. In
2016, his sophomore season, Allegretti
started in all 12 games — most-
In the early 2010s, fans of the Lincoln-Way
East football team could
hardly miss Nick Allegretti on the
field. The standout offensive lineman
was a key player on some offensive
juggernauts.
But now, the nation may be catching
up to what those in Frankfort already
knew.
Allegretti, a 2014 graduate of Lincoln-Way
East and current offensive
lineman on the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign football team,
has been named to the Rimington
Trophy watch list. The award recognizes
the nation’s top center.
“I don’t even have a lot of words
for it,” Allegretti said of being named
to the watch list. “It’s an awesome
honor to even be on that list.”
Though it is an award he’s kept
track of since he was a teenager, Allegretti
was unaware he was on the
watch list until a former teammate
reached out to him.
“I don’t really have social media,
so I didn’t even know about it,” Allegretti
said. “I actually got a text from
Joe Spencer, our old center, congratulating
me. I had no clue what he was
talking about.”
From experience to leadership
Allegretti is no stranger to success.
He played a crucial role on the 2012
Lincoln-Way East football team that
got to the Class 7A state title game.
In 2013, he was selected for the U.S.
Army All-American Bowl after a season
in which he had 56 pancake blocks
After being redshirted his freshman
year, he played in 11 games in 2015.
He mostly played at center and guard,
but also on special teams. But Allegretti
also showed his willingness to
do whatever the team needed when
an injury led to him playing defensive
tackle.
“I had not played defense since
eighth grade,” Allegretti said. “It was
a Tuesday or Wednesday of the week
[leading up to the] Western Illinois
game. One of my teammates went
down, and we looked at our D-line,
and we didn’t have many people left.
We had no depth. Coach came up to
me after practice and said, ‘What do
you think about playing D-line?’ I
said, ‘All right, let’s go!’”
Allegretti moved over and, on two
days of practice, he played as a rotational
guy on the defensive line in
the second half. The following week,
against North Carolina, he got thrown
in on the defensive line during the
first quarter.
“It was a quick turnaround,” he
said, laughing. “I hadn’t played it in
about six years, and never really at a
