TO THE EDITOR
Is it the pot calling the kettle black?
I do hope, in taking the Herald to task for “blatant,
misleading advertising” in last week’s Herald,
Barbara McKenzie is living in one of the
“older” parts of Highfields where the mature trees
have been preserved.
If that is not so, and Barbara is living in one
of the “new” areas, I think it is a case of the pot
calling the kettle black for her to be criticising the
bulldozing of mature trees to make way for development.
Sadly, it is a fact of life that most of us live on
blocks now denude of all original trees, but that
HISENSE 32” CTV
More letters - page 7
were once exactly like what has been cleared for
the new Avenues development.
Sadly too, that fact is often overlooked when we
set out to pass judgement on others.
In contrast to Barbara’s view, some people see
this development as providing choice for those
who wish to live in this delightful area.
Also, unless Barbara’s house is located next
door to The Avenues development, how will it affect
the lifestyle she now enjoys? I do hope this is
not tall poppy syndrome. - Name withheld.
Highfields makes first move against draft plan
The Highfields community has
lodged a submission to Toowoomba Regional
Council, stating its objections to
the Highfields Cultural Precinct Master
Plan.
The time for submissions closed last
Friday, a month later than the council
had earlier set, following a protest meeting
of almost 300 residents more than a
month ago.
Since then, the Highfields Community
Leadership Group, led by Highfields
and District Business Connections, has
reviewed Council’s draft plans, and
consulted various Highfields interest
groups.
The submission has been accepted by
a number of local groups.
Highfields and District Business Connections
at its meeting last week, was
briefed on the submission.
The Highfields Submission Partners
reject the TRC’s draft plan on four
grounds.
• The non-compliance of the council’s
draft plan process as per the Local Government
Association of Queensland’s
community consultation process.
• Non-compliance with obligations of
Local Governments to State local governance
procedures.
• Failure of planners to meet with
their professional obligations outlined
and adopted by the Planning Institute of
Australia.
• Lack of accountability to the community
as per TRC’s own corporate
planning goals.
The Highfields submission says that
in its current form, the draft plan simply
does not meet the community’s standards
for civic engagement and aspirations
for a re-vitalised community heart.
For instance, the choice of two options
for the siting of the library excludes
more relevant long term options.
The Highfields Submission Partners
are continuing to meet with community
leaders and Toowoomba Regional
Council, and are preparing to launch a
series of community consultations over
the next 12 weeks, to drive a social and
economic vision for Highfields.
President of Highfields and District
Business Connections Jim O’Dea said
the current transformation of the Highfields
commercial and cultural precinct,
will meet the needs of its citizens, only
if local values and priorities of the community
are integrated into the planning
and development process.
Community consultation continues
around the need for a community heart
in Highfields.
By MILES NOLLER
Highfields Business Connections president Jim O’Dea with guest speakers Kate Charters, director of Sustainable
Economic Growth for Regional Australia, and Robert Prestipino from Vital Places, a town planning
consultancy that has been assisting the Highfields community.
New Acland's emergency response team prepares for State finals
New Acland will be well represented
when the Darling Downs
South West regional finals of the
State Training Awards are held at
Wellcamp Airport in Toowoomba
on July 29.
The Queensland Training
Awards have celebrated the
State’s top training achievers for
the past 55 years.
The awards recognise individuals
and organisations that strive
for and have achieved success,
best practice and innovation in
vocational education and training.
All aspects of New Acland’s training
regime will be in the spotlight
with finalists in three categories –
Large Employer of the Year, Vocational
Student of the Year and
VET Trainer of the Year.
Vocational Student of the Year
finalist, Dallas Hinrichsen has
been with New Acland for over a
decade and is currently a mobile
plant operator.
Dallas was offered the opportunity
to do a Certificate III in Mine
Emergency Response and Rescue
and is now a valued member of
the mine’s Emergency Response
Team (ERT).
“It’s probably the best thing I
have ever done,” Dallas said.
For Dallas, being a part of the
ERT at New Acland was a natural
fit.
“I have always been very safety
conscious and really enjoy helping
people.”
“To be part of a team whose
role it is to make sure everyone
gets home safely to their families
after their shift is a fantastic feeling.
It has also made me better at
what I do in my main job as a mobile
plant operator.”
Dallas’ training has also
brought an unexpected but extremely
valuable benefit to his
local community.
After finishing a shift last year,
Dallas came across a serious accident
between a car and a bus
just outside his home town of
Toowoomba. He was the first person
at the scene and without hesitation
went to work assessing the
accident victims.
He stayed on site to help emergency
workers extract victims
from the wrecked vehicles and assisted
in providing first aid.
Dallas’ trainer at New Acland,
Ray Wallbank from Emergency
Risk Management Queensland, is
also a finalist in the VET Trainer of
the Year category.
Ray has a passion for training
and is committed to helping others
achieve goals they never thought
possible.
He has been working with employees
at New Acland Mine for
the past 18 months, providing a
Certificate III in Mines Emergency
Response and Rescue.
Ray said first aid training can
be confronting and students often
have reservations on how they
would cope in an emergency situation.
“I tell them that in an emergency
any effort is better than no effort,”
Ray said.
“A great deal of any first aid
and rescue training is building
confidence and using a student’s
personal experience to make the
training relevant.”
With over 23 years of service
with the Queensland Fire and
Rescue Service, Ray utilises the
many skills he learned on the job
and works to include his students’
life experience in their training.
“People find it much easier to
learn if they can relate the subject
back to their own life experiences.”
Ray delivers training on site at
New Acland, using real life scenarios
from around the mine and
utilising equipment the employees
use every day in their work.
New Acland is also well deserving
of its place in the Large
Employer of the year category.
With almost 300 full time employees
and 500 plus contractors
working at New Acland around
the clock, keeping the workforce
safe is the mine’s main focus.
Alongside productivity performance,
the company’s ‘Life
Rules’ safety program ensures
that safety is a priority and always
front of mind.
New Acland training and emergency
response co-ordinator,
New Acland's emergency response team: Back - Aaron
Titmarsh, Andy Koehler, Joe Littleton and Greg Briggs. Front
- Steven Frost and Dallas Hinrichsen.
Grant McDonald, said the aim is
for employees to always return to
their loved ones at the end of each
shift, unharmed.
“Our people are our greatest
asset,” Grant said. “Because on a
day-to-day basis it is our people
who influence our success.
“As a direct result of the extensive
training offered to all employees,
the total reportable injury
frequency rate is at an all-time
mine low at New Acland and well
below industry standards.
"Health and safety is and will
remain paramount to everything
we do,” he said.
THE GRAND OLD CROW
32 William Street,
Crows Nest
Ph: 4698 1108
Boundary Street first two stages completed
The Boundary Street upgrade
has reached a major milestone
with the completion of the first
two stages of construction.
Toowoomba Regional Council’s
Deputy Mayor and Chair
of the Infrastructure Committee
Cr Carol Taylor said Boundary
Street would be opened to traffic
from Bridge Street through to
the second Range crossing connection,
by mid July 2017.
“Council has completed work
to construct the missing link
between Pedersen and Bedwell
streets, as well as constructing a
new Boundary Street alignment
north of Hermitage Road-Ganzer
Road to connect to the
second range crossing,” Cr Taylor
said.
“The section between Bedwell
and Pedersen streets is now
open to traffic and drivers will
no longer have to detour around
Pedersen, Hendy and Bedwell
streets.
The council has funded the
upgrade of Boundary Street to
provide a western connection to
the second range crossing and
cater for growth in Toowoomba’s
transport network.
“The Boundary Street upgrade
will improve access for
heavy vehicles and freight transport
to Toowoomba’s Torrington
industrial area.”
Cr Taylor said the council’s
own construction and project
management teams were delivering
the upgrade project.
“Council has constructed new
sections of Boundary Street to
provide a sealed roadway, improved
drainage, road lighting
and landscaping,” Cr Taylor
said.
“The next stage of the project
involves upgrading the section
from Pedersen Street south to
Bridge Street.
“This section will involve
widening to create four lanes
for the majority of this section,
sealed shoulders, improved
drainage and landscaping.
“Early construction activities,
including a water main relocation,
pavement works and an
upgrade of the Pedersen Street
intersection, have already started
in this section.”
Cr Taylor said the final stage
of the project would involve
upgrading the intersection of
Boundary Street and Hermitage
Road-Ganzer Road to straighten
the alignment and improve safety
at the intersection.
“A short access road links the
new northern section of Boundary
Street to the old Boundary
Street.
When the final stage is completed,
the old northern section
of Boundary Street will be for
local traffic only and will be
closed at the northern end, with
traffic using the new alignment,”
she said.
The overall Boundary Street
upgrade will be completed to
coincide with the opening of the
second range crossing in late
2018.
Council thanks residents and
the community for their patience
and co-operation during
these works. Residents will be
advised in advance of construction
works and Council will
seek to minimise disruptions
where possible.
Kids holiday fun day at the Cafe at Abbie Lane
The Queensland Government
has introduced new laws to promote
responsible dog breeding.
The legislation came into effect
on May 26, 2017 and applies
only to dogs born on or
after this date.
The laws require all persons
giving away, supplying, selling
or advertising dogs or puppies
to have a supply number that
identifies the registered breeder
of that dog.
Supply numbers can be obtained
by registering on the
new Queensland Dog Breeder
Register. Alternatively, a supply
number may also be a membership
or permit number from an
organisation or local government
that accredits dog breeders
and that has been approved
by the Minister as an approved
entity.
The legislation has been developed
because many Queenslanders
are concerned about the
welfare of dogs and puppies sold
and supplied in Queensland.
Registered dog breeders will
receive a supply number, which
must be included with the dog’s
microchip details and displayed
when the dog is advertised, sold
or given away.
This will allow puppies to be
traced back to their breeder.
Exceptions to this registration
are primary producers that
breed working dogs do not have
Alexis and Briane Scantlebury, Oakey.
New laws on dog selling
to register as breeders, as long as dogs for purposes other than as
they supply all of the dogs they working dogs.
breed to other primary producers
as working dogs. However, ers only need a supply number
Interstate and overseas breed-
primary producers must register when the transaction occurs in
as a breeder if they supply any Queensland.
Coal mining and Oakey business
A pity that some people have seen
fit to undermine the attempts of the
Toowoomba Regional Council at the
recent Oakey beautification plan by placing
orange pro-coalmine signs on shop
fronts, walkways and roadways around
our town.
This is creating further division
among Oakey and surrounding
residents encouraging more unwanted
hostility.
Not all residents are sympathetic to
the signage and this visual harassment
will not convince them otherwise.
Many businesses in Oakey are
wounded with shops closing and many
operating but struggling. Waynes
World, Betterblend, Jeweller/Gift Shop,
Primac/Elders, Oakey Tyre Service,
Armstrong Motors, Ray White, Cattle/
Love and contentment the secret to centenarian's life
If you want to reach 100 years like
Oakey’s newest centenarian, Merle McCoist,
it would seem that all you need is love
and contentment with the simple life.
A resident of Dr EAF McDonald Nursing
Home, Mrs McCoist celebrated her
100th birthday with family, friends, fellow
residents, staff and volunteers at a morning
tea.
Telegrams from dignitaries including
the Queen, Governor General Peter Cosgrove
and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull
were read, followed by a touching and
light-hearted poem written by Mrs McCoist’s
friend and the cutting of the cake.
It was the second of three birthday
celebrations for Mrs McCoist, including
a big family get together on Saturday and
a smaller family lunch following the morning
tea on Monday.
Mrs McCoist was born in 1917 in Esk
and grew up in Oakey and Cooyar before
sub branches, NED Landcare, Café 43,
Primac/Elders …… gone to name a
few. Reduced operating hours and staff
reductions are occurring in other business
houses.
Perhaps to those that are still operating
and displaying their support for the
Acland coal mine, need to rethink. One
bakery in Oakey has publically stated
that 5 to 10 per cent of her business
comes from the mine, where does the
remaining 90 -95 per cent come from?
Will you shun those customers who assist
in making up the 90 per cent by declaring
your support to the mine.
Is it fair to assume the bakery loses
10 per cent of her business if the mine
closes, yet many surrounding farms
lose 100 per cent of their business when
the mine depletes their underground
water source? Is this a fair outcome?
When these farms disappear does the
moving to Goombungee when she married
the love of her life, Rob Roy McCoist.
The couple lived in Maryborough during
World War II, where Mr McCoist, a fitter
and turner by trade, built ships.
After the war they lived in Cooyar and
Blackbutt and raised four children, Rob,
Margaret, Jeanette and Dianne.
In their later years the couple relocated
to Oakey, where Mr McCoist went into
care at Dr EAF McDonald Nursing Home.
Mrs McCoist lived nearby with daughter
Margaret until six years ago, when she
moved into Dr EAF McDonald Nursing
Home.
The couple’s legacy includes three
surviving children, 14 grandchildren,
34 greatgrandchildren, and 10
great-great-grandchildren, with another
five great-great-grandchildren on the way.
Mrs McCoist said she was very happy to
reach her 100th birthday and was pleasantly
surprised by all the fuss.
other 90 per cent of the bakery business
disappear also?
It is common knowledge among
long term residents that the township
of Oakey started on a downward economic
slide when the coal mine came to
town, just ask them. What was a boom
town may become a ghost town thanks
to NAC stage 3 expansion. Stages 1 and
2 have done little to assist the economic
status of Oakey businesses what can
stage3 offer?
Just how many mine workers actually
live and purchase product in Oakey?
The staff at New Acland Coal Oakey
office live elsewhere. How many Oakey
shopkeepers live elsewhere.
Highfields, Goombungee, Meringandan,
Kingsthorpe, Gowrie, Toowoomba
are the favoured residential destinations
with Dalby, Highfields, Toowoomba
and the Internet the shopping spots
among mine workers. - Meredith
corridor
essential
for gliders
to survive
“I’ve had a lovely day but it was much
more than I expected,” she said.
“I don’t know if there is a secret to living
to 100, all I can say is I’ve lived a good life
but it has just been a simple life.
“I had a very happy married life and
a very loving family, I’ve never been a
drinker or smoker, and I’ve always eaten
good, healthy food.
“I enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing,
crosswords, reading and loved music, especially
playing the piano.
“I was always acrobatic, flexible and
agile and I can still touch my toes.”
Dr EAF McDonald Nursing Home
Recreation officer Lynda White said Mrs
McCoist was a very popular, well loved
resident who enjoyed family visits, socialising
with fellow residents, walking
through the gardens and a weekly bingo
game.
It is said that people live
It is well known that by
staying active there are
other benefits like reducing
Keeping fit also enhances
mobility, balance and flexibility
along with weight loss
and improved sleep.
Toowoomba normally start
a new fitness regime or
join in on one of the many
activities or special interest
groups on offer.
"Residents even try new
things for the first time,
Retirement villages to face the music
Retirement village
mogul, Aveo, has
come under attack
recently after a joint investigation
between ABC’s
Four Corners and Fairfax
Media that has alleged instances
of shamefully high
fees, unfair evictions, and
convoluted contracts.
“Entry and exit fees are
rife in the industry and
unfortunately, appear to
exploit the elderly, one of
Australia’s most vulnerable
groups,” GemLife CEO
and Director, Adrian Puljich
said.
“For this reason, we
have never charged these
outlandish fees in our company’s
history.
"The latter years in life
are a time to feel secure,
which is why GemLife pioneered
the ‘ageing in
place’ strategy, ensuring
residents stay in their
homes for longer,” Mr Puljich
said.
It is purported that the
majority of the retirement
village juggernaut’s profits
come from exit fees taken
from residents upon departure.
With a resident turnover
target of 10 to 12 per cent
per annum, up to 40 per
cent of a property’s value
is taken with the average
levy totalling $287,000 in
2016.
“If true, these companies
appear to be profiteering
from residents having to
leave their homes and
friendships behind,” Mr
Puljich said.
Some retirement villages
have previously subjected
residents to evictions
due to their names
being absent from titles,
despite having the properties
left to them in a deceased
partner’s estate.
“If your partner or family
member has left a Gem-
Life property to you in their
estate, that home belongs
to you,” Mr Puljich said.
GemLife has always
committed to no entry or
exit fees, residents retaining
100 per cent of their
capital gains, and ensuring
residents will never be
left in the cold if and when
they choose to vacate.
The GemLife Promise:
• No entry or exit fees.
• No refurbishment fees
• Five-star resort facilities
Training hub for medical students
Some of Toowoomba’s most recognisable
buildings and landmarks will soon be found on
coffee tables across Australia, thanks to a new
book being released by local artist Damien Johnson
this July.
The coffee table book will feature 40 hand drawn
local urban sketches by Damien, whose unique
style of artwork has become quite renowned in the
Garden City over the past 18 months.
“I am excited to see my work being presented
in such a beautiful format and am equally thrilled
to think that my drawings are now being used to
promote our wonderful city of Toowoomba,” Mr
Johnson said.
In addition to Damien’s iconic sketches the
book will also feature short stories, humorous
anecdotes and urban philosophies, ranging from
thoughts about love and marriage to cinema and
education and even craft beer.
Work is progressing on the establishment of
the Southern Queensland Regional Training Hub
which will provide medical students the ability to
study, work and live in Toowoomba and Charleville.
Assistant Minister for Health, Dr David Gillespie,
said that significant progress has been made
in establishing the Hub, and the University of
Queensland will focus on facilitating regionally
based vocational training pathways to improve
retention and provide more access to medical services.
“The University of Queens-land has signed on
to the project, and is meeting with local health and
medical providers about this new program,” Dr
Gillespie said.
“The Toowoomba and Charleville Hubs will
work with health care providers, specialist colleges
and local health authorities to develop training
pathways for our future doctors in the region,
improving opportunities for regional specialist
careers.”
Member for Groom Dr John McVeigh said that
each hub, including the Toowoomba and Charleville
Regional Training Hubs, would receive initial
funding of around $1 million.
“This initiative will create more jobs within the
University of Queensland for the operation of Regional
Training Hubs.
“This initiative will create more jobs within
the University, and training investments like Regional
Training Hubs are essential to the health
workforce of regional areas like Toowoomba and
Charleville into the future,” Dr McVeigh said.
“This Coalition Government initiative supports
high quality rural placements for health students
from across Australia, to help ensure rural communities
have access to doctors, nurses, midwives
and allied health professionals in the future,” Minister
Gillespie said.
“Supporting rural health training is an important
way to address rural health workforce shortages.
“These initiatives will help the Coalition Government
deliver on its commitment to provide first
rate health and medical services to all Australians,
regardless of where they live,” Dr McVeigh said.
Book features local buildings and land marks
“The stories probably reflect more of my personality
than the sketches,” Mr Johnson said,
“They often refer to specific people in
Toowoomba who have impacted me in some way,
and are delivered in a manner that
I hope inspires readers to see life in our city as
a magnificent work of art to be admired and enjoyed.”
The book launches on July 20 at The Third
Monkey Cafe, Club Lane, at 7pm. The free event
will give attendees the opportunity to meet and
converse with the artist, buy the book and enjoy
complimentary coffee.
Copies of the book have also been requested by
both the Toowoomba Regional Council Library
and the Toowoomba Historical Library and will
be available for viewing in each later in the year.
Claire Gibson, Peregrine Adventures and Intrepid Travel, discusses 2018 adventure cruises
“I wish I could soften your pain
and lessen your fear,” which resonated
with St Vincent’s Private
Nursery hours extended
open until 2pm on Saturdays, the change to take
effect from this Saturday, July 15.
The nursery, staffed by volunteers, presently is open
from 9am until 12.30pm. These hours will still apply on
Thursdays.
Some customers have said they are unable to make the
nursery by 12.30 on Saturdays.
Hospital’s mission and values.
CEO Kathryn McKeefry said
it was a wonderful pleasure to
have someone of Samuel’s calibre,
someone who is so passionate
about helping people from
all walks of life, to have as the
special guest on the night.
“St Vincent’s legacy, mission
and values are about helping
Drones flown near an Easter
egg hunt and a wedding have
cost their pilots hundreds of
dollars in fines.
A drone pilot has also been
fined $1440 for flying in Sydney
Harbour restricted airspace
and flying within 30
metres of people.
The fines are the latest in
penalties imposed by the Civil
Aviation Safety Authority for
breaching the drone safety
rules.
The Civil Aviation Safety
Regulations set out the drone
rules and associated penalties.
"We would love the community
to get behind this event
and help us celebrate the milestone
and hear Samuel Johnson
speak.”
Easter egg hunt and wedding
trigger drone fines
A group of children at a
Canberra Easter egg hunt
were put at risk by a drone
flown at a height from which
if the drone malfunctioned it
would not have been able to
clear the area.
The drone pilot was fined
$900.
A $900 fine was also issued
for hazardous flying at and
near guests at a wedding in
regional NSW.
All three drone pilots paid
the penalties issued by CASA.
CASA’s Director of Aviation
Safety, Shane Carmody, said
fines will continue to be issued
where people break the drone
safety rules.
“The rules protect people,
property and aircraft from
drones,” Mr Carmody said.
“If you fly a drone it is your
responsibility to fly by the
rules and stay safe at all times.
“Every drone pilot should
download CASA’s drone safety
app, which will help them
fly safely.”
flown for recreational purposes.
Primary producers join Hong Kong trade delegation
AgForce will join a
high powered business
delegation travelling to
Hong Kong in September
to accelerate and activate
opportunities for
agriculture in the Asian
market.
The Access Hong
Kong delegation, organised
by Toowoomba
and Surat Basin Enterprise
and Food Leaders
Australia, marks
the first international
passenger flight direct
from Wellcamp airport
to Hong Kong, and just
the second international
passenger flight to
leave the airport.
The September 3
-7 delegation will include
a major conference,
industry and site
tours and a chance for
producers to highlight
Queensland produce at
the Asia Fruit Logistica
conference.
Asia Fruit Logistica
is where companies
across the international
fresh fruit and vegetable
supply chain meet
face-to-face each year,
with organisers expecting
700 exhibitors and
11,000 buyers from 70
countries.
AgForce General
President Grant Maudsley,
said Queensland
rural and regional com-
munities were on show
on a global stage thanks
to the agriculture conference.
“This trip provides
a great opportunity for
agricultural representatives
and businesses
to grow their understanding
of the Asian
market, to connect with
potential customers and
to develop relationships
with other delegates,”
he said.
Mr Maudsley also
travelled with TBSE
and FLA’s delegation
last year, known as AccessChina’16.
He said the trip highlighted
the problems
and solutions around
tariff barriers and export
into the China market
under the China-Australia
Free Trade Agreement.
TSBE executive
chairman Shane Charles
said a strong contingent
of producers who were
on last year’s delegation
to Shanghai, had signed
up for Access Hong
Kong.
“What our wider
region now offers in
terms of produce is remarkable.
and Lockyer Valley regions
Livestock
CROWS NEST
One of the most significant changes
to the way livestock producers
treat biosecurity issues is about to
be introduced - and confusion and
myth abound across the Northern
Downs.
To extract the facts, the Emu
Creek Landcare Group is organising
an information day for Wednesday,
July 19, at Pinelands Hall.
Rachel O’Brien from Biosecurity
Australia will attend to explain
what is required.
Emu Creek Landcare Group
president Frank Burgess and secretary
Bob Rowlings believe the
changes are not necessarily onerous
on cattle producers, but believe
that compliance could determine
if a livestock enterprise can
continue.
They are concerned that some
compliance costs, particularly onfarm
auditing, might be a burden
on producers with smaller numbers
of cattle, but suggest that only
Rachel O’Brien and her colleagues
at the moment understand the
facts.
She will be joined at the Pinelands
forum with an officer from
DAF.
Mr Rowlings said similar forums
in the Brisbane and Fassifern Valleys
have been attended by 100
cattle producers each, and should
there be excess graziers wanting to
attend the Pinelands information
day, a second forum might have to
be held.
Confusion among producers
was exacerbated because the new
rules were to have taken effect on
July 1, but because many were
unaware of the changes, Meat and
Livestock Australia, which has
production,” he said.
“With a weekly
freight flight from
Toowoomba to Hong
Kong, our region’s
products are now
packed and shipped direct
to the Asian market.”
“This trip is a great
opportunity to close
the export loop and see
what happens to Australian
products that fly
into Hong Kong each
week as well as look to
financing options.”
Agriculture companies
and associations
that will join Access
Hong Kong include
Story Fresh, Downs
Farm Fresh, Sunnyspot
packhouse, Merivale
Farms, Bassett Barks,
Dandarragan Farms,
Total Combined Yarding of 1110 head
Market Quotes: Numbers remained similar to
last week’s yarding, the only difference being
a drop in price for almost all lines. Cows that
were on offer were least affected and may have
been just a shade better while everything else
suffered. In the young cattle section plain types
suffered the most with drops of up to 20c/kg
better quality lines not as bad. Overall feeder
prices for both Trade and Export were just a
shade easier.
carriage of the new rules, extended
the introduction three months
until October 1. From October
1, biosecurity will be included in
the Livestock Production Assessment
program, requiring every
LPA accredited producer to ensure
biosecurity requirements are
fulfilled both on-farm and during
the transport of livestock between
properties and feedlots, including
to slaughter and live export.
Producers are required to develop
a farm biosecurity plan, but
producers who have developed
a farm biosecurity plan in their
Johne’s disease management, will
not need to complete another plan.
To meet the requirements of
LPA, each Property Identification
Code must have a formal, documented
farm biosecurity plan
which does three things:
“Access Hong Kong
is a chance to show
what our region has to
offer to the world, build
our export capability,
and we want to welcome
more producers
and businesses aboard
the flight and delegation,”
Mr Charles said.
“AccessChina’16
unlocked $350million
in future business opportunities
and we’re
excited to see what
opportunities this trip
• One, it helps to manage and
record the introduction and movement
of livestock to minimise the
risk of introducing and/or spreading
diseases.
• Two, where reasonable and
practicable, it controls people,
equipment, and vehicles entering
the property, minimising the potential
for property contamination,
and to keep a record of such
movements where possible.
• Three, prevents and controls
animal diseases on-farm by regularly
monitoring and managing
livestock.
Information will also be provided
on how the LPA and the Johne’s
Disease arrangements under
J-BAS work together.
Those wanting to attend should
RSVP by July 17 to Frank on 4698
EVERYDAY SCIENCE WITH JAMES M C KAY
Cherry picking the science
In a scientific context, cherry
picking is the term used to describe
a practise where a person,
or organisation, choose one or a
few scientific studies which support
their point of view, while
deliberately ignoring studies
which do not support their point
of view.
Cherry picking is very common
when an idea or argument
is not well supported by the
available evidence.
Science involves testing a hypothesis
to check its validity. Often
this involves multiple studies,
and in some cases thousands
of studies.
In almost every case a single
study is a small part of a broader
picture, a piece of the puzzle,
rather than a conclusion in itself.
A systematic review is work
On Saturday, July 22, the Crows Nest Children’s
Centre will celebrate 20 years of quality
early childhood education and care to the local
community with a function at the centre and are
inviting past and present staff and families along
for the occasion.
Over the 20 years this service has grown in size
and strength and now offers the options of long
day care, before, after and vacation care, and casual
and occasional care.
The centre is also in the sixth year of running
a fully accredited Kindergarten program for children
entering Prep the following year.
Centre director Jodie Beutel said the centre has
undertaken by a team of professionals
to summarise all
available evidence on an issue.
A recent example is a report on
Genetically Modified food done
by the National Academy of Sciences
released in 2016.
This 400 page document
summarises all the evidence
from about 900 studies over the
last 30 years, with public concern
over the safety of GM food
being the primary reason for the
review.
The committee found no
substantiated evidence of a difference
in risks to human health
between currently commercialised
genetically engineered
crops and conventionally bred
crops, nor did it find conclusive
cause-and-effect evidence of environmental
problems from the
GE crops. Due to competition
in the food industry, companies
who are anti-GM often cherry
pick the evidence, rather than
look at it holistically to promote
their product and turn customers
away from competitors.
It is easy to select a study or
part of a study to create an argument
which appears to be supported
by science.
Experts consider the practise
to be dishonest and unethical,
but it happens all the time, and
unfortunately people without a
background in science are often
persuaded by such arguments.
All arguments against the
current consensus on human
induced climate change involve
cherry picking.
Children's centre celebrates 20 years
had the pleasure of many influential people who
have touched the lives of the children who have
passed through our service and in turn, many children
have touched our lives as well.
“We hope past staff and families will come and
celebrate this momentous occasion with us where
we can share stories from the past and present, and
hopefully mark the start of another successful 20
years together.”
The celebrations will run from 10am to 2pm
and food and drinks will be available to purchase.
There will be a jumping castle and face
painting to keep the young ones busy. For more
information contact the centre 4698 1543.
Through the looking glass - textile and
mixed media exhibition
Through the Looking Glass, a solo textile/
mixed media exhibition by Barbara Scott is currently
showing at Rosalie Gallery, Goombungee.
Inspired by the works of author Lewis Carroll,
it is a journey through the Victorian era telling the
story of Barbara’s ancestors.
Barbara said the exhibition explores who she is.
“What better way to explore this is there than to
delve into Alice in Wonderland and Through the
Looking Glass. Alice’s search for Who am I gave
me the impetus to clarify who I am through my
own looking glass, a mirror of my family’s past
lives.”
As Barbara re-read books by Lewis Carroll, she
was transported to a time between 1850 and the
late 1880s in her own ancestor’s lives.
Like Alice she travelled through a child like
world of “curiouser and curiouser” into an adult
world much darker and threatening.
“My ancestors’ stories have opened the door on
who I am and why I am. I have been made much
richer by their lives as tinker, tailor, soldier, rich
man, poor man, beggar man, and thief,” Barbara
said.
“This exhibition is dedicated to our grandmothers
where ever they may be.”
The exhibition is open Wednesday to Sunday
from 10.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. and continues until
July 31.
Barbara Scott's ancestor
Helen Fortune married chimney
sweep Thomas McClure in
1845 and spent most of her life
in The Pleasance, one of Edinburgh
slum areas. She reared
seven children.
delight audiences.
Ms Johns started the group
Coach Lyndal Johns is in her
retiring year and is looking to
hang up her poms and no better
way to do this than to go
to where it all began. Lyndal
Johns and Toowoomba City
Cheerleaders have been invited
to Sydney to support the Parramatta
Eels cheerleaders and the
junior pom squad in September
performing at Olympic Park Stadium.
Monique Carroll, Eels cheerleading
coach, herself a past student
of Ms Johns has learnt all
she knows from the experience
coach. Ms Lyndal is excited to
be taking her current squad back
to where her love of footy and
cheerleading began. She has
fond memories of the 80’s supporting
the Parramatta Eels and
hopes this trip inspires the girls
to nurture their love of dance
and to create similar memories
which her past students and herself
now hold.
National titles
selection
Anastasia Topalov has been selected in the
Queensland Pony Club Tetrathlon Sub-Junior
team.
Pony Club Queensland is hosting the Pony
Club Australia National Championships at the
Toowoomba Showgrounds from September 18 to
22.
Riders will come from all States to compete in
dressage, showjumping, eventing, formal gymkhana,
mounted games, tetrathlon and a quiz competition.
The National Championships are held
every two years.
Queensland hosted the event in 2007 at the
Toowoomba Showgrounds. Fourteen riders from
the Darling Downs have been selected in the 2017
Queensland team.
Anastasia Topalov from Cabarlah Pony Club
has been selected in the Queensland Pony Club
Tetrathlon Sub-Junior Team.
Tetrathlon is new to Queensland, so as a lead
up to the Nationals, West Toowoomba Pony Club
hosted a Tetrathlon recently. Tetrathlon involves
swimming, running, shooting (with laser pistols)
and showjumping.
The swimming section was held at the Glennie
Pool and the running was conducted at the criterium
cycling track. The show jumping course is
different to a normal show jumping course as it
includes some cross country style jumps. Competitors
also have to negotiate a gate and a slip rail.
Both Anastasia and her sister Kaitlin competed
in West Toowoomba Pony Club event.
Toowoomba player
Steve Mitchell competed
at the Queensland
Closed Table Tennis
Championships held
last week in Townsville.
After some tough
teams matches, the individual
events were held.
Mitchell, pictured,
made the semi final of
the doubles playing with
Townsville's Olav Dahl,
which was eventually
won by Rockhampton
players, Joel Coughlan and Matthew Pettett. The
singles event had Steve drawn in a very tough
group but he defeated the number 3 seed , David
Fielding on the way through to the main draw
where he accounted for another Townsville player,
Venkat Vangaveti in the quarters before losing to
the runner up Ben Gould from Brisbane.
Ex Mongolian rep player Argi Lkhagvadorj successfully
defended the title he won last year at the
Gold Coast in six thrilling games.
In the womens singles, Townsvilles Andrea
McDonnell added to her collection of Queensland
titles, defeating Wynnum's Ashley Martin.
Highfields Eagles under 12s
headed to Gladstone over the
weekend to compete in the Annual
Jason Hethrington Cup.
There were a total of 35 teams
from around Queensland and
our boys fought it out playing up
to four games a day. They had
some great wins and close losses
bringing to end up 12th overall in
the carnival. This was a great effort
in the heat and apart from a
pretty good result, the best thing
the boys can take away is pride in
their sportsmanship as well forming
a strong team bond both on
and off the field.
That's what Junior footy is all
about... playing with and for your
mates.
They are a much improved team
for playing in this great cup. - Sally
Haywood.
fishing
CABARLAH: The June trip to Chinchilla Weir
for the annual competition with the Chinchilla and
Taroom fishing clubs is a traditionally cold trip but
the weather was absolutely divine and it was an enjoyable
weekend.
Unfortunately, it was a very quiet weekend for
fishing, one of the quietest we have ever had as a
club. While there were a few carp caught, all three
clubs were only able to weigh two fish in for the entire
weekend. These were both Jew fish caught by
Anna Smith. Anna won both trophies back for the
Cabarlah Fishing Club.
There was great attendance from all three clubs
and although the fish were hard to find, morale and
mateship between the clubs was abundant. We all
came together on Saturday night for a barbecue and
had a great time. A massive thank you must go to the
Chinchilla Club for making up salads and desserts
to go with dinner, they were delicious and made the
night. David Park was the lucky winner of the $100
attendance draw. Anna of course had the biggest
catch with a 1.06kg jew fish.
We welcome new club member Phillip Fitzsimmons.
The next trip is to Boondooma Dam on the
July 15 and 16. - Emily Gale.
