Dear Geraint dg2813@hotmail.co.uk 16th September 2014 For no reason in particular I was thinking about "Four Leaf" Clover yesterday and decided to search for his name on the web. I am sure you and many other Old Stationers out there would remember him as a benign Master of Music at the school. He was in fact my first form master way back in 1957 and found him engaging and his personality infectious. I had no idea he had a doctorate, nor the extensive nature of his subsequent career after leaving Stationers. I am sending the item I found and thought you might like to include this in a future edition of the magazine. You may not, of course, but here it is anyway. Such a pity his life was curtailed so soon at the age of 49. Best wishes Dave Gordon 1957-64 Dr David Clover MA, DMus, GTCL, FTCL, LTCL 1930 -1979 David was born in Fressingfield, Suffolk in 1930. He was educated at Southend High School for Boys and Huntingdon Grammar School. He went on to study at Trinity College of Music, London, gaining graduate status. He then studied for the Master of Arts degree from London University. He was a member of The Royal College of Organists in the mid 1950s he took up his first teaching post as Director of Music at Stationers' Company's School. After Stationers' (1960) David accepted the position of Music Advisor for the City of Hull. Next, in 1967, came the position of Senior Music adviser for The City of Sheffield. He was the Founder and Conductor of The City of Sheffield T h e O l d S t a t i o n e r - N o 8 0 NEWS OF FORMER STAFF Teachers' Choir and Orchestra from 1968 and the Founder and Conductor of The City of Sheffield Youth Chorale from 1969. On a national level he founded and conducted The British Youth Choir and Chamber Orchestra (now the National Youth Choir of Great Britain). I now work for NATS Limited at the London Air Traffic Control Centre which is situated at Swanick in Hampshire. My hobbies are Aviation Photography, Airshows, Travel, Flying and on occasion Sailing. I remember the School fondly, the School Trips to Germany, drama and trips to Winchmore Hill in all weathers!! I have been contacted by a few former class mates down the years and look forward to being involved in the OSA. PETER BULLEN 1927-2014 A Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Peter Bullen took place on Thursday 10th July 2014 at St. John's Church, Wantage. The hymns sung were 'The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll not want; He makes me down to lie In pastures green, He leadeth me The quiet waters by,' and 'Now the Day is Over, night is drawing nigh, shadows of the evening steal across the sky.' The Bible reading was taken from John 14, verses 1-6. The eulogy 'Reminiscences' was given by Leslie Lane. Peter Bullen Peter grew up in North London in Hornsey in what is now part of the London Borough of Haringey. In due T h e O l d S t a t i o n e r - N o 8 0 OBITUARIES course he went to the local Grammar School, the Stationers' Company's School, and his attendance at that school and the activities that followed from it formed an integral part of his subsequent life. I will come back to that in a moment. On leaving school he obtained an engineering apprenticeship with De Havillands at Hatfield and he was not alone among Old Stationers following that path. It was also a natural choice for him, to follow on the interest he had generated in aviation from his membership of the Air Cadets at the school. He continued to work for De Havilland after the end of his apprenticeship but in due course decided he wanted to widen his engineering knowledge and experience and worked elsewhere before obtaining a position with the Swiss engineering company SIG as Sales Manager for Southern England and stayed with them until he retired. By the time that Peter retired he had married Olive and inherited a ready-made family. He also took the opportunity to satisfy a long desire to live in Norfolk and they moved from Southgate to a property just outside Norwich. Unfortunately shortly after the move Peter's health started to deteriorate and this restricted his activities though he continued to maintain his interest in sport. In 2004 with Peter becoming less mobile Peter and Olive decided to move to Grove to be nearer the family. It also led to Peter's and my paths crossing when he joined the Wantage Probus Club of which I was already a member and a chance remark established that we had both been to the same school although some years apart. By then Peter was also becoming hesitant about attending social occasions organised by the Old Stationers Association where it entailed returning home alone late on a dark winter's night so having a companion to travel with was a benefit for us both. The Stationers' Company's School was founded in 1861 by the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers (one of the City Livery Companies) to educate the sons of liverymen of the Stationers' Company and was situated in Bolt Court off Fleet Street. By 1893 the City of London had ceased to be a principal residential area and the school was admitting pupils who were not sons of liverymen. So in that year the school moved to the site in Hornsey with which the Old Stationers present here today are familiar. The school was different to many others in that it had this fascinating connection with the Livery Company, whose base was their magnificent Hall close to St Paul's Cathedral, and with a history that dates back several hundred years. Unfortunately these unique attributes of the school did not carry much weight with the Haringey Borough Council who decided to close the school in 1983 and it was pulled down in 1985. Thus there was no longer a supply of former pupils to fill the ranks of the football and cricket clubs and of the Association but the former pupils have nevertheless contrived to ensure that the name of the school has far from disappeared. Peter joined the school in 1938 but only had one year at Hornsey before the impending onset of war forced the school to evacuate to Wisbech in Cambridgeshire. From the various reports that I have read the pupils were well received by their hosts and by their fellow pupils and links between Wisbech Grammar School and the Old Stationers Association exist to this day. The evacuation ended in 1942 and Peter had a further year at Hornsey. When Peter left the school he joined the Old Stationers' Football Club, which had been in existence for many years. There was not, however, a cricket club attached to the Old Stationers and those wishing to play joined an outside club and for many this was Highgate Cricket Club. In 1949, however, it was decided to form an Old Stationers' Cricket Club and Peter was a 45
