I have now done as much as I can to
identify the players in the four photos.
There are still too many gaps, but I have
now run out of those who may be able to
help and I must now rely on feedback
from our readers.
That’s the best I can do, GORDON
(Please contact Gordon if you can supply any
of the missing names. Thanks Ed.)
There is also an article on GEORGE
COTTRELL in The Old Stationer No. 79
pages 25&26 under the heading ‘News of Old
Stationers who started School in 1938 or
earlier.
DAVID WATTERSON
1943-2014
David was a pupil at Stationers’ from 1954-
1959.
Obituary by TONY MOFFAT
David joined Stationers’ in 1954, in Norton
House, and left at the end of the fifth
form. Mike Hiron (a year-mate) was one
of his friends and remembers: “One
absolutely marvellous, unforgettable
moment that will always remain with me,
is when we had a school cross-country
race. Just before the race started, one of the
runners, a real big-headed big-mouth (no
names no pack-drill as they say!) loudly
boasted “at least I will beat old Watterson
cos he will probably come last”. The race
ended with David finishing in the top half
of the runners while old big-mouth (no
names etc!) finishing way, way behind him.
That really made our day - well done
Dave”. David later moved to Enfield and
Richard Phillippo (another year-mate)
also remembers David when they would
go running around the streets of the town
and Richard had difficulty keeping up.
David maintained his links with Old
Stationers by joining the OSA and was
still in contact with Old Stationers John
Brown and George Mears who were a few
years older than him.
When at School, he lived near Highbury
and that is why he was such a passionate
Arsenal supporter. He was such an ardent
fan, that he was even buried in his Arsenal
shirt and scarf.
His first job was working for the Post
Office dishing out pensions etc, then a
newspaper before joining GEC as a credit
controller. He became a Member of the
Institute of Credit Management and later
became a credit controller for Lloyds of
London enjoying travelling abroad to keep
